After a long reign as King, Aragorn finally takes his rest, and a great beauty was revealed in him; after a season of the PPP, Alan takes a week off, and… well, the comparison ends there. Join The Man of the West and The Shieldmaiden of Rohan for an unexpected episode as we conclude the now three-part discussion of The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen from Appendix A of The Lord of the Rings. Arwen tries to convince Aragorn to wait (if you leave me now, you'll take away the very heart of me); Aragorn speaks no comfort to her, but offers hope; and Arwen's death is even more tragic than at first glance. Alan and Sara ask why Elrond didn't stick around a bit longer, think through what “the Elder Days” means now, and accuse Ar-Pharazôn of dining and dashing. Also, Alan asks Sara about The War of the Rohirrim. This episode is sponsored by/brought to you by BetterHelp. The Valar mourn after the marring of Arda. Yavanna makes the most renowned creation in all of the world: the Two Trees of Valinor. (Also, do you think Morgoth is in a punk band?) Three friends read and react to the greatest story you've never heard — the Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. 00:13 Greg reads pages 37-40 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 08:57 Discussion "And as they watched, upon the mound there came forth two slender shoots; and silence was over all the world in that hour, nor was there any other sound save the chanting of Yavanna. Under her song the saplings grew and became fair and tall, and came to flower; and thus there awoke in the world the Two Trees of Valinor. Of all things which Yavanna made they have most renown, and about their fate all the tales of the Elder Days are woven." Back from our holidays John and Derek are catching up on The Rings of Power Episode 4 "The Great Wave" and discussing it in spoiler filled detail. The Rings Of Power Episode 4 The Great Wave Synopsis Episode Written by Stephany Folsom with John D. Payne and Patrick McKay Episode Directed by Wayne Yip Series showrunners John D. Payne and Patrick McKay Based on "The Lord of the Rings" and appendices by J.R.R. Tolkien Queen Regent Míriel has a vivid dream of the destruction of Númenor by The Great Wave. With tensions in the city rising, the dream and its portents shape Queen Miriel's dealings with Galadriel and her decision to send her back to Middle-Earth and away from Númenor. Placed in prison Galadriel's neighbour, Halbrand, offers her some advice to slow down, understand her captors and be less confrontational with the Queen. As Pharazon comes to collect Galadriel for departure, she escapes to the tower to seek an audience with the true King of Numenor, Miriel's father. But the Queen is already there and takes the opportunity to show Galadriel the vision of Númenor's destruction in a palantír. Galadriel convinces Míriel to join the fight against the Orcs in the Southlands. As preparations begin for war Isildur pledges himself to the effort. Arrondir meets Adar, who appears to be a scarred elf from the Elder Days. Adar releases Arrondir, giving him a message to be passed onto the humans who have taken refuge in the old elven Watchtower. They have the opportunity to surrender and swear fealty to Adar. But with food running out, Theo and Rowan go scavenging back at their village, Tirharad. As Rowan is scared off by the Orcs they learn that Theo holds the dark sword hilt they seek. As Theo tries to escape from the orcs he is helped by Arrondir and his mother Bronwyn. Meanwhile in Khazad-dûm the Dwarves have found mithril and keep it a secret, but Elrond discovers the mine and swears an oath to Prince Durin to keep his secret. Heading back to Lindon with Elrond, King Durin III informs his son to discover what the Elves of Lindon are up to. Episode 25: What can we make of Túrin, Tolkien's most problematic hero? At times he is all we want him to be: warrior, leader, dragon-slayer, beloved of Elves, Dwarves, and Men. And yet he is a deserter, an outlaw, the killer of his friend, a foolhardy captain, and an incestuous lover. Only one thing is certain for this larger-than-life character: things are not going to end well. Sam and Raleigh dive head first into the longest tale of the Elder Days, taking turns celebrating, hating, and debating Túrin Turambar: the Master of Doom, but by doom mastered. Quenya Questions in Quarantine: Join a first-time reader and a Middle Earth veteran on an isolation-inspired adventure through J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Silmarillion.’

A poem about the history of another world
This week kicks off with Merlin doing John's bit. Merlin has a new ATP shirt but hasn't earned it yet. Your hosts disagree on which of them has the worse taste and sense of humor. Merlin gender-swaps his face and sends it to John, and this leads to a discussion of hairs. John has some information on genes and earwax. The history of product packaging is discussed. Merlin shares some things he made for a different podcast, and John preemptively declares that he failed at the challenge. Merlin still doesn't understand what's allowed in show notes, and John isn't nearly finished demonstrating that this wasn't the actual challenge. The guys tease some visual homework you might want to watch. In a mini-topic, Merlin complains about words he doesn't like and phrases that should probably be replaced. Maybe he should just pen a piece on their ouster. Unless John takes him to task. There's a brief fever dream on references and pronunciation. John blew the chance to do some of Merlin's bits on his other program, but John couldn't get in. John wants to revisit knife sharpening, but Merlin realizes it's a trap. John thinks the Floppers don't listen to the program, and Merlin implores Stu to please reach out. Miyazaki is quite a smoker. So, of course, smoking is discussed. Provided it makes it into the final edit, your hosts _finally_ discuss the Japanese Moving Video. Believe it or not, John has high expectations about the moving process, and Merlin unsubscribes. Do you have any idea what goes into properly packing books? _Do you?_ (_Recorded on Tuesday, May 28, 2019._)
The complete unabridged audiobook of J.R.R Tolkien's The Silmarillion. The Silmarillion is an account of the Elder Days, of the First Age of Tolkien’s world. It is the ancient drama to which the characters in The Lord of the Rings look back, and in whose events some of them such as Elrond and Galadriel took part. The tales of The Silmarillion are set in an age when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-Earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils, the jewels containing the pure light of Valinor. Included in the book are several shorter works. 'The Ainulindale' is a myth of the Creation and in the Valaquenta the nature and powers of each of the gods is described. 'The Akallabeth' recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Númenor at the end of the Second Age and 'Of the Rings of Power' tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age, as narrated in The Lord of the Rings.
