This podcast special was recorded live at the recent Popular Culture Association Conference in New Orleans, USA, April 2025, where Alex was delighted to be asked to participate in a roundtable discussion on Amazon's prequel series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Patrick McKay & J.D. Payne, 2022-). In a detour from our usual format, Alex is without Chris but joined by two fellow panelists, Alicia Fox-Lenz and Tim Lenz (both stewards of the Mythopoeic Society), alongside an enthusiastic room full of popular culture scholars taking part in a freewheeling and open discussion about the show. Listen for conversations on world-building, adaptation, concerns over representation in relation to the show's depiction of race, gender, and sexuality, and plenty more. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

The Anthony Mackie-led vehicle, which is the fourth Captain America film and 35th MCU film overall, managed to exceed somewhat meager box office projections, however, its reception with both critics and audiences isn't as definitive a victory. The film is currently sitting at 51% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has earned a B- CinemaScore, which is among some franchise lows for Marvel.According to exclusive reports from Deadline, the Mike Flanagan-penned, solo Clayface film seems to be on track to meet its targeted September 2026 release, with DC leadership set to hear pitches from potential filmmakers next week. Two noteworthy names rising to the top as candidates to helm the rumored horror-tragedy include Speak No Evil's James Watkins and Truth or Dare's Jeff Wadlow – with the expectation that casting will quickly follow suit once a director is locked-in. James Gunn has described the film as a DCU project, but it is still unclear whether it will connect to any existing projects or continuity. Christopher Nolan's next film for Universal, The Odyssey, has assembled an understandably stacked cast that includes the likes of Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o and Jon Bernthal to name a few; now Mia Goth has joined the cast in an undisclosed role, while Matt Damon's role has finally officially been revealed to the title of role of Odysseus as announced via a photo shared from the film's X account. The retelling of Homer's epic poem is slated for a July 17, 2026 release. Universal has debuted the first full trailer for the live action remake of How To Train Your Dragon ahead of its June 13 release.Hulu released a first-look teaser for the final season of The Handmaid's Tale, premiering with three episodes on April 8, followed by weekly releases until the May 27 finale. Shawn Levy, Hasbro Entertainment, and showrunner Dave Crevello are producing the project.Warner Bros. has hired Potsy Ponciroli to write a sequel to the 1985 film The Goonies, with Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus returning as producers. The project has no director attached yet.Deadline has learned that Denis Villeneuve is currently planning to film Dune 3 this summer and a team has been in pre-production on the film for quite some time. A Major Leap Forward: Season 3 of “The Rings of Power” Prepares for War

Geek Freaks Headlines

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is returning for its third season with what promises to be its biggest leap forward yet — literally. Show insiders have confirmed that season 3 of Amazon Prime Video's epic fantasy will jump several years beyond the events of season 2, plunging viewers headlong into a fully ignited War of the Elves and Sauron. At the end of season 2, Sauron (Charlie Vickers) emerged triumphant, seizing control of Mordor by removing Adar (Sam Hazeldine) from the equation and securing the nine Rings of Men. Despite a brewing alliance among Elven leaders, the Dark Lord remains a formidable menace. This new chapter is set to explore his efforts to forge the One Ring — a master creation designed to subject all races of Middle-earth to his will.Along with the time jump, season 3 is expected to showcase how each faction in Middle-earth reacts to a rapidly escalating conflict. For the Elves, this is a defining moment: their leaders are determined to prevent Sauron's shadow from enveloping the land. Meanwhile, Númenor stands on the brink of upheaval under Pharazôn's (Trystan Gravelle) rule, who has grown increasingly antagonistic toward the Faithful after realizing Halbrand's hidden identity as Sauron.Viewers will also discover the evolving journey of the Stranger (Daniel Weyman). Having embraced the name “Gandalf,” he continues to refine his powers, presumably to face off against fresh threats that have emerged since the last battle. The looming conflict between Gandalf and a dark wizard (Ciarán Hinds) is expected to be another focal point, further intensifying the show's magical stakes. On the production side, returning directors Charlotte Brändström and Sanaa Hamri will be joined by newcomer Stefan Schwartz for the season's eight episodes. Their collective vision aims to expand the scope of the series, both visually and narratively, as it accelerates toward the War of the Elves and Sauron.By introducing its most significant time jump yet, “The Rings of Power” season 3 is set to catapult fans further into the darkest corridors of Middle-earth's Second Age. With the One Ring's creation on the horizon, alliances will be tested and destinies shaped, ensuring that this new installment remains one of the most anticipated chapters in the growing tapestry of J.R.R. Tolkien's world.

Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” This famous quote, attributed to Lord Acton, could just as easily serve as the thesis statement for the sophomore season of Amazon's streaming hit, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Further exploring the Second Age of Middle-earth, the allure and peril of unchecked power and untempered ambition become inevitable thematic focal points this season, as the series inches us closer to Tolkien's legendary trilogy. One of the most compelling aspects of the most recent season is its focus on the power of suggestion and manipulation. Sauron is a master of deceit, poised to play perhaps the most important role in shaping the fate of Middle-earth. His ability to influence the hearts and minds of even the wisest and most powerful among the Elves, such as Galadriel, was showcased in the first season. If one can look past the compressed timeline and slight alterations to Tolkien's established mythology for the sake of adaptation, the cultural apologist can find in this most recent season of The Rings of Power a valuable tool for engaging in meaningful conversations about faith. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with JOURNAL author Cole Burgett about his online article entitled, "The Subtle Art of Corruption in the Sophomore Season of The Rings of Power". Hey, everyone! Today, I'm very excited to talk with my good friend and one of the most talented composers I've ever met, Bear McCreary! Not only was he the composer for Battlestar Galactica, but he has gone on to work on shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Black Sails, Outlander, The Walking Dead,  and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. We first met when we were both little babies on Battlestar. I was surprised to find out I wasn't the only young person on the crew - Bear was the composer at only 24! Today, we're diving deep into his career, how he got interested in music, landed the Battlestar gig, and what he's working on these days. Which speaking of, Bear just released his new double album and graphic novel project, “The Singularity”. If you like heavy metal and music like Guns and Roses then you're going to love this because Slash literally plays on this album. Also, find out how Bear came up with that iconic All Along the Watchtower Battlestar remix and how he convinced me to play it with him live on stage and might again soon! Stick around for the hindsight where I force my producer to listen to me talk about carpet beetles, bed bugs, parasitic wasps, and all that fun stuff. Check it out on Disney+. Jay is enjoying the second season of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. It has a more epic feel and is giving a very entertaining interpretation of Tolkien's Middle Earth backstory of the origin of the rings and of Sauron.      Enjoy Movies!  Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong met in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1969, and started a friendship that lasts to today. They found they had a similar sense of humor and began improv together. They expanded to opening for others, and eventually headlining large venues. Their movies aren't deep, and often centered around infantile and drug humor, but it influenced a lot of people and set us on the path of understanding…well, a little. We still don't understand the Corsican Brothers. Whether you loved them or hated them, they have been an important part of our culture and the comedy world.    What's your opinion on Cheech and Chong? Where's dave?
