I increasingly believe that to invest in today's markets, one needs a macroeconomic framework. Pure momentum or valuation approaches are insufficient. I have been keen to talk with people who understand the macroeconomic and geopolitical landscape we operate in and have mental models for using these dynamics to increase the likelihood of identifying risk asymmetries. Two of my guests this year from the world of global thematic investing, David Dredge and Marvin Barth, both cited Mark Farrington as someone they refer to for insight, particularly on developments in Asia. Mark Farrington writes about global thematic investing in his Watchtower series on Substack: The Global Watchtower, The Dollar Watchtower, and the BoJ Watchtower. Mark is as prolific as he is insightful. It was a great pleasure to catch up with Mark for a fascinating conversation about his experience and learnings from a long career following developments in Asia —from the rise of Japan in the 70s and 80s to its lost decade and the rise of China. In particular, I was keen to ask Mark whether Japan can normalise its monetary policy without collapsing the global financial system. Will China follow Japan into a lost decade of debt deflation? And how poorly understood Asian markets might impact our economies and financial markets in a new world order marked by the reassertion of economic nationalism. Mark delivered a masterclass of the how's and why's of global thematic investing, it is an episode that should have a long shelf life. It is one of those episodes that I have learnt more from each time I have listened to it. But of course, none of what you are about to hear is any kind of advice; it's just for your information and entertainment. Please seek personal financial advice before investing a penny in these crazy markets. With that, please enjoy my conversation with global thematic investor Mark Farrington.Brought to you by Progressive Equity

¿Come? Gazing up at the night sky can make us feel small, but it also compels us to ask life's biggest questions. In this sermon, we join the prophet Habakkuk on his watchtower, grappling with the injustice, violence, and suffering he witnessed and asking, "Where is God?"This message suggests that true faith is not about rushing to easy promises, but about the stubborn, defiant choice to keep watch—to look out, ask big questions, and remain expectant even when the heavens seem silent. Keeping watch is the foundation of hope against despair.Scripture Reading: Habakkuk 2Watch the full worship service: https://youtu.be/q3uWd8DcBFULearn more about us: www.youngunitedchurch.com
Looked at some interesting developments in last week's topic of the Papal document on Marian doctrines, and then transitioned into the issue of historical anachronism, and how it is popping up all over the place on the Internet, and no one seems to be able to recognize it. Then we looked at David Allen and the topic of 1 John 5:1, providing a challenge to all Provisionists. Then we discussed the utter meltdown of Sam Shamoun in his attacks on David Wood, and finished up looking at what seems to be a relatively new note the Watchtower has attached to its translation of John 12:41 seeking to keep their followers in the darkness of error.

The League are running security for a peace summit when an alien ship shows up in the sky above. Followed soon after by a Thanagarian warship! It seems that Hawkgirl was a double agent sent to Earth to scout things out, where she relayed intel back to Thanigar that Earth's defenses are no match for the Gordanians, a lizard like race apparently hell bent on conquering the universe! The Thanagar's leader, Hro Talek, offers to help by recommending they build a shield around the Earth. The people and the League work with the Thanagarians in a massive effort to construct the shield generator, but things are not as they seem. Batman discovers the Gordanians were dead long before they came to earth and it turns out that Hawkgirl is betrothed to Hro Talak, and he is there on a revenge mission. He wants to build a Hyperspace Bypass to get to the Gordanian home world and end the war. The trouble is, that the bypass will destroy Earth in the process. To their surprise, the League is countered with weapons built around their weaknessess, and they are easily defeated and put in a Thanagarian prison. Luckily Wonder Woman uses her wits to trick a guard allowing her to escape and free the others. They must hide in plain site by dressing as civilians to evade capture again. They work their way to the Batcave to make plans to fight back. Hawkgirl catches up to them feeling guilty for not knowing what her people were up to, and fills them in on the true plans. They must get to the base ship and shut off the forcefield protecting the generator. Only once it's down, can they take out the generator. Green Lantern and Hro battle over the controls and Hawkgirl begs Hro to find another way. It's an epic battle with a lot of emotions, and ultimately the generator is taken down. In a cinematic sequence, Batman decides there's only one way to destroy their base, and that's to pilot the Watchtower on a collision course with the generator. Thankfully Superman saves him before the crash. The Thanagarians are defeated and have no reason to stay, so they leave for home. But all is not back to normal as Hawkgirl's status as a League member is being voted on. Half the team doesn't trust her anymore, and before they can come to a decision, she decides to resign. It's a bitter sweet ending as she bids farewell to John and flies off into the sunset... The death of Superman. Lobo joins the Justice League. Plus, an unlikely team-up in the future. What a great set of episodes! A team of Rogues, who all hate Superman team up to take him out. Toy Man, Livewire, Weather Wizard, Kalibak, and Metallo work together to attract Superman to the Daily Planet. But the whole League shows up. It is not going well for them until Toy Man uses his robot and power ray to threaten Batman & Wonder Woman. Superman takes the hit and is seemingly vaporized! The League, the planet and the galaxy mourn the death of Superman. But Batman does not believe he is dead. With Superman gone, all the villains come out to take over. Lobo shows up and wants to take Superman's place. The League reluctantly takes him with them as they go after the villains. But Superman is not dead! He has been transported thousands of years in the future. The planet is a wasteland, and the sun is red. He has no powers, so he must use his brain and normal human strength and skills to survive. Following a connection on his coms, he makes his way to the Justice League signal source which turns out to be the crashed remains of the Watchtower. Vandal Savage is the only human being alive still. Walking the ravaged Earth on his own for thousands of years. His weapon of gravity caused mass destruction and changed the physics of the solar system, wiping out humankind! And this all happened days after Superman's death! For penance, he decided to stay behind, alone on Earth, even though he was able to build a space craft to take him out into the galaxy. When he sees that Superman is somehow here, after following the coms signal he picked up, he goes to meet the man he once tried to kill. Superman discovers that Savage also built a time machine, and thinks he's found his way home, but unfortunately it needs more power than they have to make it work. Together they must go and steal a known power source that would suffice from a colony of mutated cockroaches. This energy just happens to be a powerful source of radiation, like a miniature sun, that gives Superman back is abilities, allowing them to succeed. Vandal fills Superman in on exactly what he did to destroy the world and what he must do to stop him, so once the time machine is up and running, Superman returns and saves Batman from a fatal shot fired from above. The leaders of Jehovah's Witnesses have been predicting the end of the world since the late 1870's. They taught millions of people that they would never die, but would be ushered into a paradise earth. The November 2025 Watchtower changes it all again, admitting that none of this will happen in most people's lifetime. TWITTER: @exjwpodcastINSTAGRAM: survivingparadisepodcast

This episode is a family-friendly extravaganza as we unpack the secrets to secure digital parenting. We're joined by Alanna Powers, a research specialist from the renowned Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI).
Eric Mills talks with historian and author John Parshall about his latest article on WWII's Pacific campaign in the August issue of Naval History.
Patrick rolls into conversations laced with humor, nostalgia, and unexpected listener questions. At one moment he deciphers a Beatles joke with the help of a caller, reminisces about seeing Paul McCartney live, and later fields encounters with Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons, addressing everything from religious debates to handling a stranger’s ashes. Unscripted, he answers difficult questions around concubines in scripture and the challenge of eternal punishment, balancing theological depth with bursts of laughter when “karaoke” performances sneak into the mix. Susan - When the Beatles got famous, boys started not getting haircuts as often which is probably what affected that guy’s business and his family. (01:57) Calvin - The last time Jehovah’s Witnesses gave me a Watch Tower magazine, I told them to convert to Catholicism, and they ran away across the street. (06:24) Brian - I noticed that the only state with a balanced budget and a well-run government is Salt Lake City, UT. Maybe we should take some notes from UT. (09:25) Chris (email) - It seems 7th Day Adventist twist bible verses and take them out of context to fit their views. (12:25) Juan - My friend has cremated remains and I was trying to get them buried. What should we do with them? (14:31) Ron - I had an encounter with Jehovah’s Witnesses and one of them was an elder and one was an ex-catholic. I was able to debate them and then they just left. (19:50) Deacon Shawn - I am always confused by why the two people who say that Jesus is the Christ (Mary, and Peter) get different responses. (24:13) Chris - What's the difference between a concubine and an adulterer? (31:35) Peter - How can there be a loving God whose ultimate plan includes damnation? (37:03) Marie - I had a friend who came into the Church last Easter. She has since decided to go to a Baptist church because it has a better community. What should I do? (44:44)
