Have you ever prayed and felt like God wasn't listening? In this week's message from The Voice, our summer journey through the Minor Prophets, we open the book of Habakkuk — a prophet bold enough to argue with God about the evil and injustice around him, and honest enough to bring his doubt straight to God's throne. What he received wasn't an explanation, but a revelation: "the righteous shall live by faith" (Habakkuk 2:4). Discover how to climb the watchtower when God seems silent, and how Even-If faith (Habakkuk 3:17-19) can turn your lament into worship — even before your circumstances change.Show Notes:Speaker: Dan Culbertson, Shippensburg Campus PastorSeries: The Voice — a summer walk through the Minor ProphetsMain text: Habakkuk 1–3Supporting texts: Romans 5:3-5; Romans 10:9Habakkuk is written as a call-and-response conversation between the prophet and God, largely in the Hebrew form of lamentDoubt, frustration, and honest questions are not the opposite of faith — Jacob, Job, Jeremiah, and Thomas all wrestled with God, and He rejected none of themHabakkuk 2:4 — "the righteous shall live by his faith" — later quoted in Romans, Galatians, and HebrewsTwo practices for seasons of perceived silence: Climb the Watchtower (move toward God, not away — keep praying, keep seeking, position yourself to watch for His movement) and Even-If (decide in advance to worship even if the worst-case scenario happens — Habakkuk 3:17-19)Referenced: Craig Groeschel, Hope in the Dark — acceptance is not denial; honest grief and real hope belong togetherNext Steps (highlight in episode page):Follow Jesus. In this episode, we meet Simon, a 51-year-old former Jehovah's Witness who was born into the organization during the height of the 1975 end-times hysteria. Growing up in a "biosphere of fear" in Quebec, Simon recounts a childhood defined by apocalyptic imagery, Holocaust-themed propaganda, and the intense pressure to conform to a "misfit" family dynamic that prioritized religious survival over individual identity. He takes us through his formative years—from his baptism at 17 to a 25-year marriage that ultimately dissolved when his pursuit of truth collided with the organization's rigid demand for loyalty. The narrative reaches a turning point when Simon confronts the systemic rot within the organization, including the discovery of an elder who had assaulted 22 women in a single congregation, only to be reinstated and sent to Simon's home. Simon discusses the specific mental health toll on men within the Watchtower, describing a "treadmill" of performance that leads to chronic depression and emasculation. Now living authentically after a pivotal sabbatical in Mexico, Simon shares how reclaiming his voice and listening to his "inner voice" led to a life of peace, clarity, and deep connection with his daughter, who also escaped the group. Key Takeaways The "North Star" of Truth: Simon explains that the very tools the organization gave him—a high respect for "The Truth"—eventually became his way out once he began to apply critical thinking and honest research to the group's own history and policies. Institutional Betrayal and Safety: A major catalyst for Simon's exit was the organization's failure to protect its members, highlighted by the "prolific" scandal of a predatory elder whose crimes were overlooked while the victims remained unprotected. The Psychological Treadmill for Men: Simon highlights the unique burden on men to be "beta males" who are compliant and self-sacrificing, which often results in a chronic loss of agency and deep-seated depression. The Body Knows: Simon encourages those in high-control groups to pay attention to physical symptoms—such as anxiety, depression, or a "lack of peace"—as these are often the body's way of demanding to be heard when the mind is being gaslit. "Who's on My Bench?": Through his disassociation letter, Simon found clarity by forcing his social circle to take a stand, allowing him to distinguish between superficial, conditional connections and real, solid relationships. Direct Quotes "Reality wins. You know, like you can keep your head in the sand and have your delusions and hang on tight to them, but you know, the longer it goes on, the higher the consequences… and in the end, reality wins." "If I could encourage anybody out there that's questioning… listen to your body and what it's telling to you… your body will demand to be heard sooner or later." "I needed to know going into the third period of my life who's on my bench and who's not… I don't have any more resources, time, attention, space for shallow relationships." The Influence Continuum with Dr. Steven Hassan
What the Watchtower Doesn't Want You to Know with Australian whistleblower Lara Kaput: Child labor, financial fraud, and eight types of modern slavery inside the Jehovah's Witnesses

The Influence Continuum with Dr. Steven Hassan

When Lara Kaput was eight years old, she was required to clean bricks on Jehovah's Witness building sites. She helped her father road-build on the church construction projects. She did cleaning, and gardening, and her childhood friends did this, and cleaning child-minding too. None of it paid, none very little of it optional. She did not recognize it as child labor at the time. Most children raised inside authoritarian groups do not. That is how it works. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Lara on Cults, Culture & Coercion, and what she brought to this conversation is the kind of ground-level, decade-long investigative knowledge that is genuinely rare. Lara is a prominent Australian activist and whistleblower, a co-founder of the advocacy group Say Sorry (saysorry.org), and a former vice president of the Secular Association of New South Wales. For nine years she has provided testimony and submissions to governments, law enforcement, and royal commissions across approximately 10 countries, specifically concerning the Watchtower Society, theone of the legal names for the organization known publicly as the Jehovah's Witnesses. Lara has made approximately 30 or more submissions to governments across roughly 10 countries around the globe. The allegations she has documented and reported fall into several categories, and she was careful throughout our conversation to frame these as allegations, as the matters are either under investigation or have not yet been adjudicated. They include: aiding and abetting child sexual abuse, high rates of domestic violence, intentional contract breaches, document forgery, evidence and records destruction, interference with members' democratic rights, phoenixing of businesses (the deliberate voluntary dissolution of one company to restart another, shedding liabilities while preserving assets and customers), multi-billion-dollar global property liquidation she alleges constitutes financial fraud, modern slavery, and manipulation of privacy law, and perverting the course of justice. The Justice League is up against Amanda Waller, her council of allies, and Taskforce X (a.k.a. The Suicide Squad) this week.  Waller is a planner and wants to protect the world from the League by any means. Batman and the League must examine themselves and their crew carefully. "The Doomsday Sanction" has a confrontation between Batman and Waller that leaves them both shaken. She and her allies are creating means of stopping the League to prevent what happened with the Justice Lords. In this process, they created Doomsday. The Justice Lord's Superman lobotomized Doomsday. But he has regenerated and is set free by Dr. Milo. Doomsday interrupts the League's rescue mission and fights Superman. Batman stops the Kryptonite nuclear bomb and Superman traps Doomsday in lava. The League sends him to the Phantom Zone. Batman is still leery of what the League can do. "Taskforce X" is Waller's Suicide Squad. All the members except for Flag are criminals freed from death row. They are forced into five years of service with an explosive implanted in their heads. Flag, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, the Clock King, and Plastique are tasked with getting abord the Watchtower. Once there, they are to blow the reactor to cause confusion and steal the Annihilator. The Clock King's plan goes well, until the Taskforce reaches the bridge level. Shining Knight, Vigilante, and Atom Smasher put up a fight that slows them down. Martian Manhunter almost has them, until Plastique threatens an unconscious Atom Smasher with a bomb in his mouth. Captain Atom helps but the Taskforce, minus Plastique, escape. They deliver the Annihilator to Waller. Jimi Hendrix-Electric Ladyland (Reprise in the US) U.S. Release Date: October 1968 Electric Ladyland was the third and final studio album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the most ambitious statement of Hendrix's career. A sprawling double album produced solely by Hendrix, it showcased his growing artistic independence and his willingness to push beyond the boundaries of rock music. Blending blues, psychedelia, jazz, funk, soul, and studio experimentation, the album featured classics such as “Crosstown Traffic,” “All Along the Watchtower,” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” while longer works like “1983… (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)” demonstrated his fearless creativity. Though some critics initially found the record overly expansive, its reputation has only grown with time. Electric Ladyland reached No. 1 in the United States and remains one of the defining albums of the rock era. More than a guitar showcase, it expanded the possibilities of the recording studio and cemented Hendrix as one of popular music's greatest innovators.

The EU has just passed a controversial law, hailed by the far-right as the start of "the era of deportations". Passed on World Refugee Week, the law allows EU countries to detain migrant families for years, and deport them to countries they have no connection to. This echoes the UK's failed Rwanda scheme, and Trump's existing deals with South Sudan, Eswatini, the Democratic Republic of Congo and more. It also unlocks expansive budgets for surveillance, detention and deportation. This money is likely to end up enriching the same corporations underpinning ICE raids in the US, and notorious migrant containment camps such as Australia's Nauru. Traffickers and smugglers often make headlines for profiteering off the refugee crisis, but the corporate industry that has grown up around it goes largely invisible in our news. These companies are paid billions of taxpayer dollars - not to tackle the roots causes of displacement, but to keep it away from wealthy countries' shores. But is what they're doing even working? How much public money is being directed away from essential services to feed the deportation machine? And what about the human cost? In this episode, Mathilda and Helena are joined by Sudanese refugee Mahamat Daoud, a survivor of EU-funded Libyan detention and the 2022 massacre at the Melilla-Nador border between Morocco and Spain. He describes what 'migrant deterrence' looks like up-close, and why it didn't work on him. Researcher Nathan Akehurst also joins the group, to breakdown the latest border strategy that Western governments call 'externalisation'. It comes as 2026 marks the deadliest year so far for small boat crossings on the Mediterranean Sea. Read transcriptLook, at some point you have to respect the audacity of putting the entire Justice League on a Game Boy Advance cartridge. Not one hero. Not two heroes doing a buddy-cop thing. The whole league. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the works. All crammed onto a handheld that also had to share shelf space with Hamtaro games. That's ambition. That's vision. That might also be a cry for help, but we're not here to judge. Justice League Chronicles was Ubisoft's love letter to the animated series, which means it had genuinely great source material to pull from and a screen roughly the size of a Post-it note to work with. The Justice League animated series was the kind of show that made you sit down and watch it with your kids because it was actually that good, and somehow that energy had to survive the trip to a device that ran on two AA batteries. Here to help make sense of it all is Doug Adamson from The Monitor Tapes, a man whose podcast is literally named after the thing the Justice League uses to watch for trouble. Which means he was cosmically destined to appear on this episode whether he wanted to or not. So pull up a chair in the Watchtower, try not to touch anything that looks important, and let's talk about a DC animated tie-in that had no business being as earnest as it was. Learn such things as: Does it really matter if you end up fighting against someone else's villains? Does it really matter if you can't pick how you're going to pair off the League members? Does anything really matter when you're getting to play one of the best cartoons ever made? And so much more! You can find Doug on BlueSky @themonitortapes.com, Threads @themonitortapes (although it might actually be DC Dave running those, I don't know), his podcast The Monitor Tapes, and whatever else they decide to release over on Brick Crisis Network. Going Back To Smallville

In this episode of Going Back to Smallville, we're breaking down “Doomsday” and talking about everything that worked for us, everything that hurt, and why this finale still leaves us excited for Season 9. From Jimmy's heartbreaking death and the birth of Watchtower to Lois disappearing with the Legion ring and the shocking arrival of Zod, this episode throws a lot at us emotionally. We really enjoyed it overall, even if the Clark vs. Doomsday fight felt a little smaller than we hoped for considering this is basically Smallville's take on The Death of Superman. Still, “Doomsday” delivers big finale energy, major consequences, and one of the most emotional endings of the entire series.Support the show: https://patreon.com/hopefullyawesomeBecome a Member on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHRvjz_pKP1Th5Y8ZIwFMtQ/joinCheck out our Merch! - https://hopefullyawesome.creator-spring.com/This video is NOT sponsored. In this episode, we meet Genesis, a 31-year-old former Jehovah's Witness who shares her journey from a high-control upbringing to finding authentic peace. Born into the organization after her grandmother was recruited during a time of extreme grief in 1960s Cuba, Genesis describes a childhood dominated by "fear and anxiety" regarding the impending apocalypse. She details the devastating impact of the organization's shunning policy, which saw her 16-year-old brother cast out and his parents told to "pretend he died," leaving Genesis as the "replacement child" under intensified surveillance and bizarre modesty rules involving everything from sandals to jean shorts in swimming pools. Genesis also opens up about her early marriage to a "JW dream man"—a relationship born more out of a desire for escape than true compatibility—and the subsequent institutional betrayal she faced when he cheated. From being pressured by elders to "forgive and forget" his infidelity to the "miraculous" relief she felt upon walking away during the COVID-19 pandemic, her story is a masterclass in reclaiming agency. Today, she deconstructs the toxic narrative that success outside the cult is merely a "blessing from Satan," proving instead that true happiness comes from the hard work of self-care and autonomy. Key Takeaways Exploitative Recruitment: The organization systematically teaches members to look for "pain points," such as death in the family or isolation in foreign countries, to bait vulnerable people with the promise of a "resurrection hope". The "Death" of the Living: Shunning is used as a punitive tool for control; Genesis's mother was explicitly told to "pretend like [her son] died" after he was disfellowshipped at age 16 for refusing to rat out his friends. Control via "Appearance": Modesty rules are often arbitrary and based on the whims of local elders, such as banning sandals to avoid "provocative toes" or requiring women to wear jean shorts over swimsuits. Financial Abandonment: By discouraging higher education and retirement savings, the organization often leaves elderly members penniless, sometimes even encouraging them to leave their homes to the Watchtower instead of their own children. Reprogramming Happiness: Recovery requires unlearning the "survivor's guilt" associated with success, as members are conditioned to believe that any good fortune outside the group is a trap set by Satan. Direct Quotes "I am truly living for me, myself, and I. And as some people may say that it's selfish, but it's not. It is so nice to be selfish and put yourself first". In this episode, we sit down with Sara, a 40-year-old third-generation former Jehovah's Witness who shares a raw and revealing look at the cost of high-control religious living. Sara describes an upbringing defined by the heavy influence of her grandfather, a prominent elder who provided a sense of "structure" and "safety" until his death when Sara was a young teenager. Following his passing, Sara witnessed her family's transition from "hero" status to "villains" in the eyes of the congregation after an uncle was jailed for child abuse, exposing the fickle nature of the "brotherhood" and the organization's priority of appearance over the well-being of its members. The conversation delves into the devastating trauma of institutional shunning and the systemic failures regarding child protection within the Watchtower. Sara recounts the harrowing experience of seeing a convicted predator reinstated while in jail to the applause of the congregation, while she was castigated for seeking her own identity. Now 17 years removed from the organization, Sara discusses her "miraculous" journey of reclaiming her life, earning a bachelor's degree at age 40, and utilizing professional therapy to heal from PTSD. This episode is a powerful testament to "changing the family tree" and finding unconditional love outside of a closed system. Key Takeaways The Utility of Members: Sara reflects on how her family was only valued as a "good example" as long as her grandfather was alive and serving the congregation's needs; once he died, the family felt "invisible" and abandoned. Paranoia and Control: The episode explores the extreme demonization of secular culture, including childhood phobias regarding "spirit-possessed" toys like troll dolls and posters of unicorns. Performance vs. Reality: Sara highlights the "double life" many Witnesses lead, noting that the persona required by the organization is often the "farce," while the "rebellious" actions are often a person's first attempts at authentic self-discovery. The Injustice of the Judicial System: A central theme is the disparity in discipline; Sara was disfellowshipped for normal human development (sex before marriage), while her abuser remained in good standing and in another case an abuser was quickly reinstated despite criminal convictions. Reclaiming Higher Education: Despite being told growing up that college was not important or "wicked," Sara emphasizes that secular education and professional mental health tools were the keys to her successful recovery. Direct Quotes "They care about their appearance… more than any of the group". "We're so damn hungry that we'll accept a crumb and make a meal out of it". "I changed the family tree in a way". Read transcriptSomewhere in the mid-2000s, a group of developers looked at the Justice League and said, “What if we made a game where all your favorite heroes team up… and then we just kinda vibed with that idea instead of sticking to any specific comic storyline?” Which kind of works actually because they got Dwayne McDuffie to write it but that's not the point. So anyway, Justice League Heroes burst onto the scene for PS2, Xbox, PSP, and Nintendo DS like a Watchtower alarm that nobody remembers installing. This week on Play Comics, we grab our capes, charge up our vaguely canon-adjacent superpowers, and dive into a game that absolutely has Batman, Superman, and friends… ummm, friends are definitely there I promise and sometimes they have to be there because of contractual obligations. It sparked a lot of thoughtful discussion and honestly, we only scratched the surface.  So today, we're picking that conversation back up—but this time, we're going a bit deeper. We'll take a closer look at core doctrines, how each understands the nature of Jesus, the Trinity, salvation, and even how authority and scripture are interpreted. This isn't about arguing sides—it's about understanding where these beliefs come from and why they matter so much to the people who hold them.  Whether you're coming in curious, skeptical, or just looking to learn, this episode is all about digging a little further beneath the surface. Biblical Christianity is not a religion built by councils, popes, prophets, publishing houses, temple ordinances, or denominational machinery. Biblical Christianity is the blood-bought faith once delivered unto the saints, anchored in the preserved words of God, centered on the Lord Jesus Christ, and sealed by the gospel of the grace of God. It begins with man as a lost, hell-bound sinner and ends with the only Saviour who can redeem him: Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, crucified, buried, risen again, and coming back. Everything else is either Bible truth or religious counterfeit. Today we compare biblical Christianty with the top 3 religious organizations to see how they stack up. “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6 (KJB)What separates Biblical Christianity from every man-made system is that it does not ask the sinner to climb a ladder of works, sacraments, ordinances, priestcraft, church membership, or organizational obedience. It points him to a finished cross, an empty tomb, a risen Saviour, and an open Bible. The Roman system adds tradition and sacramental control; Mormonism adds another gospel and another authority; the Watchtower gives you another Jesus altogether. But the Bible gives you Christ alone, by grace alone, through faith alone — “the way, the truth, and the life” — and no man cometh unto the Father, but by him.

In this episode, we take a closer look at the key differences between Biblical Christianity and the beliefs held by Jehovah's Witnesses. While both identify with the Bible and the teachings of Jesus, their interpretations diverge in significant ways—from the nature of God and the Trinity, to views on salvation, the afterlife, and religious practices. We explore how Jehovah's Witnesses understand God as Jehovah, their rejection of the Trinity, and their unique perspectives on Jesus' role. The conversation also touches on differences in worship style, holidays, evangelism, and authority of scripture. Along the way, we aim to present these distinctions clearly and respectfully, giving listeners a better understanding of where these belief systems overlap—and where they part ways.As always, Don't forget to spread the fire!
