email: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com website: www.rockpopandroll.com (Some of) My Favorite Covers: From the earliest days of rock and roll, cover songs have been a vital part of the music's forward movement, drawing on its past. Long before we knew about digital discovery, one of the fastest ways for new artists to connect with audiences was to reimagine an existing hit and put it on an album or 45—infusing it with their own style, energy, and attitude. A Chuck Berry riff might get filtered through the Beatles' harmonies, or an old blues song could get a new spin in the hands of the Rolling Stones. Musicians have always looked back to reinterpret the songs that shaped them, essentially creating a conversation across decades of music. Great rock and roll covers often redefine the song. Jimi Hendrix's “All Along the Watchtower” transformed Bob Dylan's stark folk ballad into a guitar-rock, psychedelic stomper. Aretha Franklin took Otis Redding's “Respect” and made it a soul-rock anthem of empowerment. Nirvana's raw take on David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World" introduced the track to an entirely new audience. In each case, the cover didn't just honor the original—it expanded its reach. The best covers don't just repeat the past—they rewrite it, proving that a great song can live many lives. 10 Iconic Rock and Roll Covers and How They Transformed the Original Jimi Hendrix – All Along the Watchtower (1968) Originally by Bob Dylan, Hendrix electrified the song with guitars and redefined it as a rock classic. Dylan himself later performed it in Hendrix's style. The Beatles – Twist and Shout (1963) Originally recorded by The Top Notes and popularized by The Isley Brothers, the Beatles turned it into their own via John Lennon's famously shredded vocal take. Aretha Franklin – Respect (1967) Originally by Otis Redding, Aretha flipped the perspective, injecting it with feminist firepower, gospel-inspired vocals, and made it an anthem for empowerment and equality. The Rolling Stones – Little Red Rooster (1964) Originally by Willie Dixon (recorded by Howlin' Wolf), the Stones slowed it down, leaning into the deep Chicago blues feel, introducing American blues to a younger audience. Nirvana – The Man Who Sold the World (1993) Originally by David Bowie, Nirvana's MTV Unplugged version stripped it to a haunting acoustic vibe that resonated with '90s alternative fans - and (re)introduced Bowie to them, Joe Cocker – With a Little Help from My Friends (1968) Originally by The Beatles, Cocker turned the Sgt. Pepper and Ringo song into a soulful, slow-burning rocker. Killer organ and gospel vocals. Janis Joplin – Piece of My Heart (1968) Originally by Erma Franklin, Joplin's version with Big Brother and the Holding Company was a raw and bluesy. The Clash – I Fought the Law (1979) Written in 1958 and first released in 1960 by The Crickets (after Buddy Holly left) and popularized by The Bobby Fuller Four, The Clash injected punk. It was their first single in the United States. Creedence Clearwater Revival – I Heard It Through the Grapevine (1970) Originally by Gladys Knight & The Pips and made famous by Marvin Gaye, CCR turned the Motown hit into an 11-minute swamp-rock jam. Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (1994) Originally by Leonard Cohen, Buckley's haunting performance influenced artists in the decades that followed. Further Listening: 4 Lesser-Known but Brilliant Beatles Covers The Black Keys – She Said, She Said (2002) A gritty, stripped-down garage-rock take on The Beatles' psychedelic classic from Revolver. Siouxsie and the Banshees – Dear Prudence (1983) The Beatles' ballad morphs in goth-tinged new wave.. Gov't Mule – She Said, She Said / Tomorrow Never Knows (1998) A jam-band fusion of two Beatles tracks Fiona Apple – Across the Universe (1998) Slowed to a languid pace, Apple leans into the cosmic melancholy

Ethical hacker Rachel Tobac joins us to answer a juicy question: How would she hack someone reasonably security savvy like Matt?
We have landed the Waverider in the hanger bay of the Watchtower. It is time for Season 2 of Justice League! The galactic war between Darkseid's Apokolips and the Highfather's New Genesis is raging, and the Highfather's forces led by Orin, Darkseid's biological son, are winning. But that all changes when Brainiac arrives. Things are so bad Darkseid must ask his enemy, Superman, and the League for help. The League agrees over Superman's objections. They split up and Batman & Wonder Woman head to New Genesis looking for help. The League works with Apokolips and defeat Brainiac causing him to retreat. They follow him to his asteroid base, but it was a well laid trap. Brainiac and Darkseid work together to capture Superman. Brainiac wants to evolve and needs Superman's DNA to do it. But Darkseid uses the station to try and destroy New Genesis. Thankfully the League can stop him, except that Superman is bent on ending Darkseid. It takes Batman to get him away before the asteroid is destroyed. This week I sit down with Brooke Deanne—a former Jehovah's Witness turned Rapid Transformational Therapist—to unpack her powerful journey from Watchtower to freedom. Brooke shares what it was really like growing up inside a high-control religious group many don't realize operates like a cult, and the emotional cost of walking away from everything she was taught to believe. From navigating complex PTSD to helping others heal from deep-rooted trauma, Brooke breaks down how she reclaimed her identity, voice, and inner peace. This is a conversation about courage, deprogramming, and radical self-trust. If you've ever felt trapped by belief systems or struggled to rebuild after spiritual trauma, this one's for you.To learn more about Brooke, visit her website at : https://www.lifecoachinggoddess.com/
Patrick rolls into conversations laced with humor, nostalgia, and unexpected listener questions. At one moment he deciphers a Beatles joke with the help of a caller, reminisces about seeing Paul McCartney live, and later fields encounters with Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons, addressing everything from religious debates to handling a stranger’s ashes. Unscripted, he answers difficult questions around concubines in scripture and the challenge of eternal punishment, balancing theological depth with bursts of laughter when “karaoke” performances sneak into the mix. Susan - When the Beatles got famous, boys started not getting haircuts as often which is probably what affected that guy’s business and his family. (01:57) Calvin - The last time Jehovah’s Witnesses gave me a Watch Tower magazine, I told them to convert to Catholicism, and they ran away across the street. (06:24) Brian - I noticed that the only state with a balanced budget and a well-run government is Salt Lake City, UT. Maybe we should take some notes from UT. (09:25) Chris (email) - It seems 7th Day Adventist twist bible verses and take them out of context to fit their views. (12:25) Juan - My friend has cremated remains and I was trying to get them buried. What should we do with them? (14:31) Ron - I had an encounter with Jehovah’s Witnesses and one of them was an elder and one was an ex-catholic. I was able to debate them and then they just left. (19:50) Deacon Shawn - I am always confused by why the two people who say that Jesus is the Christ (Mary, and Peter) get different responses. (24:13) Chris - What's the difference between a concubine and an adulterer? (31:35) Peter - How can there be a loving God whose ultimate plan includes damnation? (37:03) Marie - I had a friend who came into the Church last Easter. She has since decided to go to a Baptist church because it has a better community. What should I do? (44:44)

On this episode of The Post Credits, we're suiting up to review James Gunn's Superman (2025) — the first official chapter in the new DCU. With David Corenswet donning the cape and Rachel Brosnahan as a sharp, fearless Lois Lane, the question is: did Gunn's vision soar, or just take a cautious first flight? We're breaking down the performances, the tone, the villains, the Daily Planet vibes, and all the connective tissue (hello, Guy Gardner!) that might shape the DCU moving forward.

I was honored and proud to host yet another member of the Villanova Wildcat Crew, my friend Peter Russell. To say that Peter and I have a few things in common would be an understatement and it wouldn't do our friendship justice. First and foremost, we both appreciate energy, and we embrace the people that exude positive energy, starting with two of the most beautiful souls in the universe, Rainer “TITAN” Jenss and Tom Staib. God rest both of their souls.Peter shares how he became a Wildcat and what those wild days in the mid-1980's meant to him. You'll hear Peter and I speak of characters like John Coates, Tim “Tmac” McGuire, Bill Schroeder, Andy Taccetta, Kevin Taylor, and “Miracle on the Hudson” survivor, Steve O'Brien. Then we shift to present day where Peter reveals what kind of music makes him truly feel alive, including Dave Matthews Band, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Billie Eilish, to name a few. He reveals a band name that I had never heard before, Manchester Orchestra, and I'm so glad he did. Check these guys out, trust me.Peter opens up about why, after 30 years, he chose to leave the world of media and launch a self-funded video-based, online mentorship platform for young adults, called Kindling https://www.gokindling.com/ He describes how Kindling helps young adults cultivate personal agency, empowering them to thrive personally and professionally. Although the program is suited primarily for adults from 18-29, Kindling can be the spark for anyone that wants to foster change and self-improvement.Finally, Peter pays tribute to his family. Having recently lost his ultimate mentor, his father, Jack, he shares how and why Jack's character has been a lifelong inspiration.Join us, and let's see where the energy takes us!Tight Pants SNL https://youtu.be/Nv7Ts4v5_Bs?si=1Lp1zqALTPrEj7YoAll Along the Watchtower https://youtu.be/QLvNVtTtqao?si=BtbIDTr_FxOMzFKCGod Only Knows https://music.apple.com/us/album/god-only-knows/1440850596?i=1440852180The Sunshine https://music.apple.com/us/album/the-sunshine/1440945297?i=1440945308 (edited)

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Dave Mason chats about his early days in Traffic, writing the classic "Feelin' Alright?", working with Delaney & Bonnie, and so much more. PART ONEScott and Paul chat about Dave Mason's unique role in the rock & roll pantheon.PART TWOOur in-depth conversation with Dave Mason.ABOUT DAVE MASONAfter recording background vocals with The Spencer Davis Group on such hits as "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm a Man," Dave Mason became a founding member of the British rock group Traffic alongside Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, and Chris Wood. He wrote some of the band's best-known songs, including “Hole in My Shoe” and “Feelin' Alright?” which went on to be covered in a memorable version by Joe Cocker. After touring and recording with Delaney & Bonnie (who recorded Dave's song “Only You Know and I Know”), he joined an early version of Eric Clapton's Derek & The Dominos. Dave soon left to pursue a solo career, beginning with the Alone Together album. He has released three Gold-certified solo albums and one Platinum album, Let It Flow, which featured the hit “We Just Disagree.” In addition to his solo releases and a duet album with Mama Cass Elliot, Dave has appeared on such legendary recordings as “Street Fighting Man” by the Rolling Stones, “All Along the Watchtower” by Jimi Hendrix, “Listen to What the Man Said” by Paul McCartney and Wings, as well as George Harrison's All Things Must Pass album. In the 1990s Dave spent time as a member of Fleetwood Mac, contributing original songs to the band's Time album in 1995. He has recorded with Michael Jackson, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills, Donovan, Phoebe Snow, and many others. Dave was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Traffic and, in 2024, published his memoir, Only You Know and I Know.
(S$-30) Bob Dylan – John Wesley Harding (Columbia Records) Released: December 27, 1967 Recording Dates: October 17, November 6, and November 29, 1967John Wesley Harding marks Bob Dylan's striking return in 1967 after his motorcycle accident, showcasing a stark shift from his electric, surreal phase to a stripped-down, country-folk sound. Recorded quickly in Nashville with minimal instrumentation, the album's sparse arrangements heighten its moral allegories, biblical imagery, and Old West themes. Songs like “All Along the Watchtower” and “I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine” resonate with haunting simplicity, while “Dear Landlord” and “I'll Be Your Baby Tonight” hint at Dylan's coming embrace of country. The record's understated style stood in deliberate contrast to the psychedelic excesses of its time, influencing The Band, The Byrds, and future Americana artists. Dylan's newfound restraint, poetic songwriting, and subtle musicianship resulted in one of his most cohesive works, earning critical acclaim and commercial success. John Wesley Harding remains a timeless, genre-defining album that helped shape roots rock and alt-country.Signature Tracks: John Wesley Harding, I Went Out One Morning, All Along The Watchtower Full Album: YouTube Spotify Playlist: YouTube Spotify
