Today we visit Middle Earth and discuss the score to "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim" with Emmy award-winning Composer Stephen Gallagher and Grammy award-winning Producer/Engineer Mark Willsher. Their goal in this project was to “honour the narrative of the film by blending the beloved design and musical language of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy with ideas befitting Kamiyama-san's beautiful hand-drawn anime.” We discuss learning from and enjoying the differences between "The War of the Rohirrim" and the original live action LOTR trilogies in terms of workflow and creative style. We also cover thematic material, composition/mixing techniques and the value of having a trusted collaboration! "Overture" from THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is copyrighted and used with permission from WBD Music AS(ASCAP), New Line Tunes (ASCAP) and Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All rights to the music are owned by WBD Music, New Line Tunes, and Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc.
In a film that crosses two very distinct fandoms in a manner like oil and water, Kenji Kamiyama's War of the Rohirrim is the world's first Lord of the Rings content since Amazon's The Rings of Power and perhaps the only LotR media that truly puts a woman at the forefront of the action! That's nice. It also reimagines a story out of J.R.R. Tolkien's own work and feels like it fits very well—maybe too well, considering the callbacks to The Two Towers—in the existing live-action LotR universe as well as the overall vibe of the series. All that said, it was a box office bomb at the end of the day, and there's a couple of aspects of the film's writing and unique animation style that feel like swings and misses. Stick around to hear the gang's opinions on the man who can kill another man in one punch, or fanservice, or 9/11. Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.
After a long reign as King, Aragorn finally takes his rest, and a great beauty was revealed in him; after a season of the PPP, Alan takes a week off, and… well, the comparison ends there. Join The Man of the West and The Shieldmaiden of Rohan for an unexpected episode as we conclude the now three-part discussion of The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen from Appendix A of The Lord of the Rings. Arwen tries to convince Aragorn to wait (if you leave me now, you'll take away the very heart of me); Aragorn speaks no comfort to her, but offers hope; and Arwen's death is even more tragic than at first glance. Alan and Sara ask why Elrond didn't stick around a bit longer, think through what “the Elder Days” means now, and accuse Ar-Pharazôn of dining and dashing. Also, Alan asks Sara about The War of the Rohirrim. This episode is sponsored by/brought to you by BetterHelp. Today, on Mythmakers, in this wide-ranging interview, Julia Golding meets with Professor Nick Groom to discuss his book Twenty-First Century Tolkien. In the first part of their discussion, Nick provided a serious literary critical attention to The Lord of the Rings before moving on to explore its various adaptations. If you’ve not heard of it, you may be intrigued—perhaps even shocked—by the unmade John Boorman treatment, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the others, including Ralph Bakshi’s animated film, the BBC audio drama, as well as Peter Jackson’s films, The Rings of Power, and The War of the Rohirrim. Hello everyone and welcome to an all new episode of Some Like It Scott! On this episode, we teleport you back to December, when the two Scotts recorded an episode talking all about the Lord of the Rings franchise's return to animation - and first foray into anime - with the Kenji Kamiyama-directed, LORD OF THE RINGS: WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM. After discussing whether this adaptation lives up to the live action entries, the English voice cast including the likes of Brian Cox, and the world-building of Middle Earth, the co-hosts turn their attention to news of a live action remake of TANGLED, as well as Luca Guadagnino taking a pass at a “new adaptation” (definitely not a remake) of AMERICAN PSYCHO with Austin Butler in the lead role. See time codes below: 5:55 - LORD OF THE RINGS: WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM review 53:17 - Live action TANGLED remake in the works 1:02:28 - New adaptation of AMERICAN PSYCHO by Luca Guadagnino Next time: NOSFERATU Patreon: www.patreon.com/MediaPlugPods

In this episode of The Rewatch Party, Nick and Anthony take on the grand finale of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Return of the King. With epic battles, emotional farewells, and enough endings to fill an entire movie on their own, this film delivers the conclusion to one of the most celebrated trilogies of all time. Anthony, ever the Lord of the Rings enthusiast, is excited to dive deep into what makes this film such a cinematic masterpiece, while Nick—always skeptical of long runtimes and excessive walking—grudgingly admits that there's a lot to admire in this final chapter. As they break down the film, Anthony passionately praises the Battle of Pelennor Fields, the charge of the Rohirrim, and Aragorn's journey to claiming his rightful throne. He argues that Return of the King is the emotional payoff that justifies the long journey of the trilogy. Meanwhile, Nick has plenty to say about the multiple endings, questioning whether the film actually needed to wrap up every storyline in such detail. He may not have the same deep love for Middle-earth, but even he has to admit that the sheer spectacle of this movie is undeniable. The discussion also touches on some of the film's most iconic moments—Sam's unwavering loyalty to Frodo, Gollum's final betrayal, and of course, the infamous “You bow to no one” scene. Nick and Anthony debate whether Frodo was the true hero of the story or if Sam deserved more credit for getting them to Mount Doom. They also take time to appreciate the film's groundbreaking visual effects, especially in the creation of Gollum and the massive battle sequences. By the end of the episode, the hosts weigh in on whether Return of the King is truly the most rewatchable of the trilogy or if it's best experienced as part of the full journey. Anthony is all in, declaring it a must-rewatch classic, while Nick—despite his usual gripes—acknowledges that there's something undeniably special about this film. Whether you're a die-hard Tolkien fan or just along for the ride, this episode delivers plenty of laughs, debate, and one last trip into Middle-earth. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167260/

Is this film a hit or miss? Did the New Zealand team, led by Phillippa Boyens, Japanese director Kenji Kamiyama and Executive Producer Peter Jackson, deliver? That's the question that preoccupies Julia Golding and Jacob Rennaker today as they dissect their response to The War of the Rohirrim, in the Season 7 debut episode of Mythmakers. Listen in to their nuanced account of the good and less than great parts of the film, and stay tuned for what they believe is the biggest challenge faced by the upcoming movie: The Hunt for Gollum. Gondor and Rohan honestly believed in Saruman, while Alan and Matt aren't sure what to believe anymore. Join The Man of the West and The Nerd of the Rings as we look at all the Kings of Rohan, and Matt gives Alan his new nickname. Saruman's gets the keys to his new place, Aldor the Old is what it says on the tin, and no one has anything good to say about Fengel. We start with a review of the new film, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, wish we could pronounce Old English, and wonder if kings should choose more peaceful hobbies. Also, we talk about Tolkien and AI (no AI used in the generation of this blurb). Sean starts the episode with a monologue about the up-and-down state of the movie release calendar after a handful of extremely disappointing movies like ‘Kraven the Hunter,' ‘Mufasa: The Lion King,' and ‘Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim' hit theaters recently, before they give way to stronger films like ‘The Brutalist,' ‘Nosferatu,' ‘A Complete Unknown,' ‘Babygirl,' and more (1:00). Then, he's joined by Joanna Robinson to talk about the winners and losers, broadly, of the year in movies (6:00). They then share their latest Best Picture power rankings (1:08:00). Finally, Sean is joined by ‘Nickel Boys' director RaMell Ross to discuss the revolutionary style and vision of the film, adapting Colson Whitehead's novel, his path to becoming an artist, and more (1:25:00).
