Episode Notes Memphis goes by many names – Home of the Blues, BBQ Capital, and the Bluff City. The last one a reference to our location on the Bluffs of the Mighty Mississippi River. But how much do you know about the muddy waters flowing in our backyard? Today I'm joined by Boyce Upholt, author of The Great River: The Making and Unmaking of the Mississippi. We talk about our own personal relationships to the water, some of the people and events that have shaped the river, and what the future may hold for the communities and ecosystems along its banks. Boyce Upholt is a “nature critic” whose writing probes the relationship between humans and the rest of the natural world, especially in the U.S. South. His work has been published in the Atlantic, National Geographic, the Oxford American, and Virginia Quarterly Review, among other publications, and was awarded the 2019 James Beard Award for investigative journalism. Tread Perilously begins a month of prestige fantasy series with an episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power entitled "The Eye." In the wake of Orodruin's eruption, Galadriel, Theo, Queen Regent Míriel, and Elendil attempt to make their way back to the Númenórean encampment on the edge of the Southlands. Will they find loved ones waiting for them there? Meanwhile in Khazad-Dûm, Durin and Elrond make one last impassioned plea to the king so the Elves can receive shipments of mithril. But when it falls on deaf ears, the prince takes matters into his own hands. Erik and Justin break the "three year rule" to talk about the current golden age of fantasy television. They also try to outnerd themselves with role playing game experience and other knowledge. Opinions of sixties British rock are aired. Erik recalls a story from San Diego Comic-Con about Galadriel's armor. Justin makes an interesting assessment of the show's title theme. He also finds some great nicknames for the characters. Erik offers a few key corrections about the story. The pair debate how much the show wants to echo The Lord of the Rings films in terms of casting. Erik makes room for Glorfindel and Justin makes an attempt to find Sauron.

We have reached the end of our adventure and discuss the finale of The Lord of The Rings The Rings of Power Episode 8 Alloyed in our spoiler filled podcast. The Rings Of Power Episode 8 Alloyed Synopsis Episode Written by Gennifer Hutchison with John D. Payne and Patrick McKay Episode Directed by Wayne Chi Yip Series showrunners John D. Payne and Patrick McKay Based on "The Lord of the Rings" and appendices by J.R.R. Tolkien In the East, the white witches known as the Servants of Sauron catch up with The Stranger proclaiming him Lord Sauron, and pledging their service to him so that he may lift the veil of his enemies so he may know himself once again and rule over the lands of Middle-Earth. Nori and the Harfoots also manage to catch up with The Stranger, who has been bound by the Servants of Sauron to keep him from using his powers, which he still has little control over. They manage to free him and help him realise who he really is - he is not Sauron but one of the Istari or wizards. They manage to fend off the Servants of Sauron stealing The Dweller's staff, which the Stranger then uses to banish the trio back to the shadow. Meanwhile, Galadriel and an injured Halbrand arrive in Eregion, much to the surprise of Elrond. The elvish medicine soon has Halbrand on his feet and he seeks out Celebrimbor, the great forger, and in their discussions Halbrand suggests a way of forging the mithril with other metals to enhance its strength. But as Celebrimbor explains what he must do to save the Elves from their diminishing light his choice of words makes Galadriel suspicious of Halbrand's keen interest in the work at the great forge. She checks into the royal lineages of the Southlands. As work progresses in the forge, Galadriel confronts Halbrand with her discovery that he is not from the lineage of the Southland kings, which was broken many years ago. Halbrand reveals himself to be Sauron, and infiltrates her mind to persuade her to become his queen and rule Middle-Earth with him as king, but she refuses. Sauron overpowers Galadriel and flees from Eregion. Keeping what she knows from Elrond and Celebrimbor, she instructs Celebrimbor to forge Three Rings instead of two, so that it brings balance to the holders. Elendil and Míriel arrive back to Númenór to find king Tar-Palantir has died. While back amongst the Harfoots, the Stranger and Nori decide to depart the group and travel east, into Rhûn, to find the “Hermit's Hat” constellation. Unsure which way to go, the Stranger chooses a direction based upon the sweet smell in the air, advising that when in doubt, to "always follow your nose". As their adventure into the East begins, so the journey of Sauron from Eregion finishes as he reaches the Land of Mordor. Adar and the Orc army find the watchtower abandoned. While they search the grounds, Arondir destroys the tower, causing it to collapse onto the Orc army. The townspeople, who moved down the valley to another village, cheer as they prepare for the next assault. Arondir hides the broken blade, professes his love to Bronwyn, and promises a life together after the battle. The battle begins, and while the villagers appear victorious, many of the enemy they killed were actually the traitorous townspeople disguised as Orcs. The rest of the Orc army attacks from the shadows, killing many and severely wounding Bronwyn. As more villagers die, Theo reveals the location of the broken blade to Adar to save Bronwyn. After journeying across the sea, the Númenórean army approaches and slay or capture the remaining Orcs. Adar gives Waldreg a task before attempting to escape, only to be captured by Galadriel and Halbrand. They interrogate him, discovering his origins as one of the Moriondor or Uruks, Elves corrupted by Morgoth. He taunts them, feigning memory of killing Halbrand's Southlander family and claiming to have killed Sauron. As Halbrand is hailed as the King of the Southlands, Theo realizes the broken blade they recovered was a decoy while the true blade had been carried back to the watchtower by Waldreg. He plants it into a mechanism causing a nearby dam to open. Water rushes through the Orc tunnels towards Orodruin and clashes with magma, resulting in a phreatomagmatic eruption and a pyroclastic cloud that approaches the village. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tradepaperbacks/message --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rangerryan/message

The battle begins, and while the villagers appear victorious, many of the enemy they killed were actually the traitorous townspeople. The true Orc army attacks from the shadows, killing many and severely wounding Bronwyn. As more villagers die, Theo reveals the location of the broken blade to Adar. The Númenorian army approaches, after journeying across the sea, and slay the remaining Orcs. Adar attempts to escape, but is captured by Galadriel and Halbrand. They interrogate him, discovering his origins as a Moriondor or Uruk, elves corrupted by Morgoth. He taunts them, feigning memory of killing Halbrand's Southlandian family and claiming to have killed Sauron. As Halbrand is hailed as the King of the Southlands, Theo realizes the broken blade they recovered is a decoy while the true blade had been carried back to the watchtower by Waldreg, leader of the village traitors. He plants it into a mechanism, causing a nearby dam to release. Water rushes through the Orc tunnels towards Mount Doom and clashes with magma, resulting in its eruption.New Project: FindEversail.comSupport this podcast: patreon.com/TVTalk Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Tolkien The battle for the Southlands begins! Adar and the Orc army advance on the watchtower of Ostirith and find it abandoned. While they search the tower, Arrondir destroys the tower, causing it to collapse onto the Orc army. The townspeople, who moved down the valley to their village, cheer at the apparent victory but must prepare for the next assault. As the villages make ready to hold off the remaining Orcs, Arrondir hides the broken blade hilt and professes his love to Bronwyn, promising a life together after the battle. The fighting between Orcs, Elves and humans begins, and while the villagers appear victorious, they discover that many of the enemy killed were actually the traitorous Southlanders, and the true Orc army attacks from the shadows, killing many and severely wounding Bronwyn. Overwhelmed and cornered in the village tavern, Adar seeks out the hilt and begins putting the villagers to the sword one-by-one until Theo reveals the location of the broken blade to Adar. With all hope lost, the surviving townsfolk are saved by the Númenorian army who slay many of the remaining Orcs. Back at the village, Halbrand is hailed as the King of the Southlands, while Theo realises the broken blade they recovered is a decoy while the true blade had been carried back to the watchtower by Waldreg. He uses it on the mechanism at Ostirith, causing the nearby dam to release water that rushes through the Orc tunnels towards Mount Doom. Clashing with magma, the resulting eruption releases clouds of volcanic ash, hot gasses and molten debris into the air, darkening the skies over the Southlands and spreading devastation across the Southlands. The battle has come… and darkness with it. How far can you go into the darkness until you lose the light? That is the central question at the center of the biggest episode yet of Rings of Power. Adar and Arondir lead their respective forces in a battle over the very future of the Southlands and both lean on Elven traditions and the defiance of death to do so. It's a fine line between light and dark as Bronwyn and the villagers stand their ground, the Armies of Númenor ride to their aide to face not just invaders into the South, but the shadow of an old evil. Payne and Patrick McKay Based on "The Lord of the Rings" and appendices by J.R.R. Tolkien Queen Regent Míriel has a vivid dream of the destruction of Númenor by The Great Wave. With tensions in the city rising, the dream and its portents shape Queen Miriel's dealings with Galadriel and her decision to send her back to Middle-Earth and away from Númenor. Placed in prison Galadriel's neighbour, Halbrand, offers her some advice to slow down, understand her captors and be less confrontational with the Queen. As Pharazon comes to collect Galadriel for departure, she escapes to the tower to seek an audience with the true King of Numenor, Miriel's father. The Rings Of Power Episode 3 Adar Synopsis Episode Written by Jason Cahill and Justin Doble Episode Directed by Wayne Yip Series showrunners John D. Payne and Patrick McKay Based on "The Lord of the Rings" and appendices by J.R.R. Tolkien After being adrift in the Sundering Sea Galadriel and Halbrand are rescued by a ship captained by Elendil, but are their rescuers friend or foe? They are taken to the Land of the Star, Númenor, an island kingdom ruled by Men who fought Morgoth alongside the Elves. The relations between the Númenóreans and the Elves have grown strained over time and the arrival of an Elf to their lands is a cause for controversy. Queen Regent Míriel denies Galadriel's request for a ship back to Middle-earth. Watched over by Elendil, he speaks of the continued influence of Elves in his lands and takes Galadriel to visit a library of lore built by Elrond's brother Elros. There she discovers that the mark of Sauron is actually a map of the Southlands where a new realm for evil forces is planned. She also learns that Halbrand, who is imprisoned after fighting some Númenórean sword smiths, is the king of the Southlands. As the Harfoots prepare for their seasonal migration, the Stranger is revealed while trying to read some star charts that Nori has taken from Sadoc's star-book. Nori and her family are reprived from being left behind, despite breaking the laws of the community, but they must travel at the back of the caravan. The next day as they migrate, with Nori's wagon lagging behind the rest of the caravan trail, they discover a stow away, the Stranger, who helps his new friends on their migration. They kill it and use its head as proof of danger to convince the rest of the town to leave. Elrond suggests they seek help from the Dwarves, and goes to his friend Prince Durin IV in Khazad-dûm. In this our second Dwarf episode, we explored the early history of the Dwarven race, their creation in the jungle caves of the Southlands, their exploration northwards and the establishment of fortresses and holds as they move through the Worlds Edge Mountains. Guided as they were by the Ancestor Gods Grungni, Valaya, Grimnir, and their incestuous offspring the culture was formed and then BOOM! The Polar Gates collapsed and chaos washed over the land.  Suddenly there are elves, mohawks and mysteries aplenty at Mount Nordberg.    This month's episode is sponsored by the Dwarfen Postal Express and Grudge for the Day.   Show Notes and Imagery for this Episode: https://layingdownthelore.com/ep18/   _______________________   If you dig what we're putting down and want more juicy content, head over to our Patreon.
