"I have long been inspired by Iranian culture and particularly its music and poetry. Much to my surprise, my response to the field recording of the city of Isfahan eventually took the form of a kind of oblique word-picture, prompted by the images and themes which the original field recording sounds brought to mind, which I then set to the sound of a Daf percussion arrangement. One of the main jumping off points was also the idea of the festival of the spring equinox, ‘nowruz' - which literally means' ‘new day' in Persian, and which is a central celebration in Iranian culture. "The Daf is a traditional Iranian percussion instrument associated with nowruz celebrations amongst many other things, whose unique sound I adore and which I felt tied in with the themes of sonic heritage in this context. My dear friend Mobin Hosseini from Sanandaj, Iran, kindly provided the accompanying Daf track. The field recording appears in its entirety, since this seemed the most fitting soundtrack to the rich imagery it inspired for me. I hope it might prove similarly evocative for anyone who listens to my contribution to the project." "This field recording of a song thrush in Oxfordshire, England inspired me to set out to create a piece of 'music for sleep' which evoked a sense of crossing a threshold between two adjacent contrasting landscapes, and of boundaries gradually blurring and warping. My idea was to emulate the sensations of hovering between waking and sleep. The sounds I used for my reimagined piece were all ultimately with this aim in mind. "I wanted to invite a sense of physically letting go, of being carried effortlessly, of surrendering to a dream-smudged images and sensations, to capture a beckoning twilit embrace of the forest air, a gentle mysterious unfolding. As someone who often finds sleep elusive, I designed this piece to perhaps help me to wind down before bed. I hope that maybe it might even help someone else achieve this too..." For a while now, I have been strongly pulled towards investigating the possibilities of using feedback from natural sources combined with digital sound-tools in order to trigger and generate collaborative bio-melodies. So this remix brief seemed like an excellent excuse to begin to tentatively explore some of these ideas further. Using a fair bit of persistent coaxing and with a combination of various VCV rack modules, selective spectral filtering and some randomly tuned digital resonators reacting to the rich frequencies of the recorded flowing Italian stream sounds - much to my delighted surprise, I discovered that the stream seemed to want to sing these strange meandering contrapuntal melodies to me...No, I was not expecting bagpipes either.* * I subsequently discovered that there is a type of dual-chantered Italian bagpipe called the 'zapogna' which does not sound entirely dissimilar to the mysterious stream instrument that emerged here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Zampogna_romana_alla_serrese_(Pazzano_2_settembre_2012).ogv Stream in Vicenza reimagined by Fiona Conn.
