Salon Goals Academy - doors are OPEN! https://www.laurenlappin.com.au/salon-goals-academy"How do I know when to hire a front desk person or a manager, and how do I afford to do it?"This question came through more than once when I asked for your listener questions, so I'm giving it a whole episode.I'm taking you back to 2017, when I was fully booked, drowning in missed calls and DMs, getting complaints from clients about being left on the bed mid appointment, and having a meltdown at home over the ordering and wages. That was the moment I hired a full-time receptionist, and I haven't looked back. In this episode I'm sharing how to know if you can actually afford this hire, the money you're already losing without one, and exactly what to hand over to a manager or 2IC so you don't end up paying someone a manager's wage to do a receptionist's job.Listener Q&A setup, and the manager questions you sent through [00:00].Receptionist vs manager: why you don't have to combine the roles like I have [01:15].Why I hired reception: fully booked, walk-ins interrupting appointments, and the service level I wanted [03:21].The real cost of no front desk: wrong bookings, missed cancellations and short-changed clients [06:24].The Monday meltdown that made the decision for me, and the money reality behind it [08:50].How to know if you can afford the hire (and when you definitely shouldn't) [10:03].Part-time options, and putting a dollar value on the time you get back [12:59].What duties to outsource to a manager or 2IC, and the questions to ask first [16:39].Why you need a position description early, and the expensive lesson I learnt without one [19:32].Wrap up, and what's coming in the next Q&A episode [21:25].....Lauren on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/laurenlappin_The Salon Goals Podcast: https://www.instagram.com/salongoals_podcastQuestions? This week on Yo Quiero Dinero, Jannese sits down with Jessica Rivera — proud Boricua, mom at 19, and 20-year corporate vet who climbed from receptionist to senior leadership without ever following the "traditional" path. Jessica is here to help us decode the psychology of corporate power, promotions, and why your work ethic alone will never be enough to get you promoted. This episode gets into the imposter syndrome that doesn't disappear even after you hit the title and the money, the moment Jessica realized she had to bet on herself, and why she believes women's emotions are a leadership superpower — not a liability. They also get into the messy, real stuff: crabs-in-a-barrel dynamics in the Latino community, boundaries with people who take shots at your success, and the one standard Jessica refuses to lower for herself.WE GET INTO: 01:21 – Becoming a mom at 19 and choosing grit over the traditional path03:26 – Being "the only" Latina in the room05:29 – Learning corporate chess: playing the game on her own terms07:12 – Imposter syndrome and the nitpicking that wears you down09:05 – From receptionist to sales: Jessica's career trajectory11:46 – The $50K retention bonus — and the promotion that never came17:33 – Betting on herself: leaving corporate to coach full-time21:23 – Building the BRAVE Method26:09 – Burnout as a "badge of honor"28:32 – Redefining success in the Latino community30:41 – Judgment, boundaries, and who gets to stay in your life33:57 – Confidence, courage, and owning your voice36:23 – Why women's emotions are a leadership superpower41:32 – Chasing who you're becoming, not just the goal45:16 – Living a full life: family, love, and what's next47:41 – Jessica's Puerto Rico retreat, resources, and the standard she refuses to lowerKEY TAKEAWAYS:→ Hard work and grit will get you far — but they won't get you promoted. Watch the YouTube version of this episode HEREIn this Maximum Lawyer episode, Tyson Mutrux sits down with longtime friend of the show, automation and AI expert Kelsey Bratcher of Hired Gun Solutions to talk about the future of intake, phone answering, and legal tech. The conversation starts from a simple Facebook post about hiring an AI answering service and turns into a brutally honest breakdown of why most voice AI products are expensive, over‑engineered, and still not better than a well‑built DIY solution.Kelsey explains how tools like Retell let law firm owners build their own AI receptionist for a fraction of the cost of vendor setups, using the same documentation they already give Smith, Ruby, or Lex Reception. You'll hear practical guidance on scope, latency, and call flow, why “simple beats fancy,” and how to use AI plus APIs to replace low‑value data‑entry work while protecting the human parts of client communication. "You had an idea every ten seconds for Vogue. You can have an idea every ten seconds for yourself." - Kirstie ClementsWelcome back to Process: Encore. In this archival series, we bring forward the timeless dialogues that laid the groundwork for Process. This week, Arielle revisits a deeply layered, expansive conversation with best selling author, journalist, and legendary former Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Australia, Kirstie Clements.Kirstie's 27-year trajectory at the absolute pinnacle of fashion publishing is a masterclass in creative longevity. Starting on the reception desk at age 23, she scaled the masthead to lead the iconic title through nearly thirteen years of epochal cultural shifts, international coups like anchoring Karl Lagerfeld's guest editorship and massive corporate evolutions. In this honest session, Kirstie unpacks what happens when you step out of a rigid corporate cocoon, how she completely shed the heavyweight skin of public expectation, and what it truly means to safeguard your innate creative power.Inside this Episode:  00:00:00 - From Vogue Receptionist to Editor in Chief: A look at a legendary 27-year trajectory, proving why mastering the unglamorous nuts and bolts of an industry scales creative longevity. 00:06:29 - Building a Vision for Australian Vogue: Navigating the intricate tightrope between corporate commercial profitability and world-class aesthetic execution. 00:12:51 - Karl Lagerfeld Guest Edits Vogue Australia: An inside look into the complex, midnight operational choreography of securing one of fashion's biggest editorial coups. 00:14:45 - Lessons from Fashion Legends: Unpacking the relentless stamina and surprisingly unpretentious nature required to keep a creative fountain thriving over a lifetime. 00:16:16 - The Pre-Social Media Era: Celebrating the legacy of keeping monumental interactions private, far away from the obligations of front-facing camera validation. 00:20:19 - Life After Vogue: The profound psychological execution of self-reinvention once you entirely decouple your identity from corporate structures. 00:35:50 - Creative Reinvention and Freedom: Moving past corporate politics to realize that your innate ability to generate ideas can never be institutionalized. 00:44:01 - Modern Pressures on Women: Deconstructing the hyper-monetized, algorithmic anxiety targeting women's aesthetics and biological timelines. 00:53:52 - Advice for Overwhelmed Creatives: Why modern multi-hyphenates must intentionally protect their artistic sensibilities from copy-and-paste digital algorithms. 01:02:44 - What Inspires Kirstie Now: Shifting entirely away from corporate consensus to find ultimate creative sovereignty in travel, freedom, and deep mentorship. Universe Walker: Beauty Desk AI and the AI Receptionist Built for the Beauty IndustryShe took a coding class at Princeton, built a prototype, and created the first AI receptionist designed specifically for salons by someone who actually runs one.Corey sits down with Universe Walker (@universewalkerismyname), Bay Area hairstylist, owner of Knuckleheads and Harlots in Oakland and Scarlet Salon in Berkeley, and founder of Beauty Desk AI. The conversation covers how she built Eve, what Eve actually does, and what the future of AI in the beauty industry looks like. Why She Built ItAfter COVID, Universe was running two salons bicoastal without front desk. New clients were calling and she was missing them. She knew she was leaving money on the table every day. When AI voice technology started to emerge she saw exactly what the industry needed. She took a coding class at Princeton, built a crude chatbot prototype, and knew she was onto something. It took years to build it properly but Beauty Desk AI is now out of beta with real customers and real results. What Eve DoesEve is an AI receptionist that answers incoming voice calls and texts from clients. Clients call your salon number like they always would. Eve answers, handles the full conversation, checks availability, describes services and pricing by stylist, books the appointment, sends a confirmation text, and manages the cancellation policy. Everything lives in one dashboard where you can see every interaction, turn Eve off and take over yourself, and track revenue in real time. Eve also works alongside existing front desk, stepping in after hours, on snow days, or when reception is busy with someone in the salon.Eve vs. Eve PlusEve handles all incoming voice and text communication without integrating into a booking platform. Eve Plus connects directly with Square for real-time availability and booking. More booking platform integrations are in progress. Head to beautydeskai.com to find out which option fits your business. The Live DemoCorey called Eve live on the podcast. Eve picked up on the first ring, walked him through service options for Scarlet Salon, described Ryan and Sierra's specialties, confirmed a Friday four PM appointment with Sierra, and texted a booking link before the call ended. It is in the episode. Worth listening to.Built for EveryoneEve works for solo suite owners, small salons, large salons, barbershops, and spas. Multi-location operators are on the roadmap. Universe built the architecture to use fewer AI tokens than most competitors, which keeps costs down and reduces environmental impact.Find Beauty Desk AI at beautydeskai.com

#195: Built a Calm, Profitable SaaS—Then Sold It on His Terms - Andy Alsop

Practical Founders Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2026 68:55

Andy Alsop didn't start The Receptionist—he bought a small iPad-based visitor management app in 2013 for $250K and turned it into a real SaaS business. What began as a simple front-desk check-in tool evolved into a full visitor management system used across offices, schools, and manufacturing sites. Over a decade, Andy grew the company to 5,500 customers across 8,000 locations and more than $7M in ARR with just 30 employees. He stayed mostly bootstrapped, focused on steady growth, strong customer retention, and a unique "employee supremacy" culture that emphasized trust, transparency, and long-term loyalty. At an inflection point—needing more capital to keep up with a maturing market—Andy chose to sell rather than raise growth equity. The company was acquired by Sign In, a growth-equity-backed platform consolidating the category. In this episode, Andy shares how he evaluated buyers, avoided common exit traps, and built a company worth acquiring without chasing VC growth.  Key Takeaways Simple Product, Deep System: What looks like a basic iPad app becomes complex, sticky infrastructure with integrations, compliance, and workflow depth. Bootstrap Leverage: Growing with customer revenue forced discipline, creating a profitable, efficient business attractive to strategic buyers. Employee Supremacy Works: Trust, transparency, and benefits (like every-other-Friday off) drove retention, performance, and long-term value creation. Clean Books Matter: Meticulous financial discipline prevented retrading risk and made due diligence smoother and more favorable. Exit Optionality Wins: Not needing to sell created leverage—allowing Andy to choose the right buyer instead of taking the only offer. Quote from Andy Alsop, CEO of The Receptionist "I sold 100 % of the company. It was a full acquisition. I wasn't even looking for, and this is something that my brother in tech always said: Don't build a company to sell it, build a great company and somebody will want to come along and buy it. And I think that's exactly the way it played out. We didn't go and look for the acquisition. We were pursued by Sign In and that's what happened.  "Just build a great company and somebody will want to come along and buy it. Because I didn't want to just sell it. I mean, we're profitable. We're growing. We have very low churn. Great employees. We're doing great in the marketplace, I didn't really have to sell." They break down what veterinary receptionists actually do day to day, from triaging calls and managing the schedule to handling emotional clients and keeping patient flow on track. It's a role that's often underestimated, but as they point out, even the best clinical team struggles if the front desk isn't supported. The conversation goes beyond recognition and into what real appreciation looks like. They share simple, practical ways to make it meaningful, like handwritten notes, personal recognition, and taking pressure off the phones during the workday. They also touch on training, professional development, and why the human side of this role won't be replaced anytime soon, even as technology evolves. #840 What if every missed call from a potential customer could be answered — automatically, intelligently, and for free? In Part 1 of this two-part episode, host Brien Gearin sits down with Laurent Cohen, founder of GetOblic, a voice-first AI platform designed to help small and local businesses never miss a lead. Laurent shares his origin story — from growing up in France to becoming a serial digital entrepreneur in America — and explains how a single phone call with an AI agent sparked the idea for GetOblic. The two dive into what voice AI actually is, how it works for both businesses and consumers, and why Laurent chose to bootstrap rather than seek outside funding. Laurent also breaks down the platform's unique "crowd training" model, how businesses can test drive the AI before spending a dime, and why he believes the biggest mistake AI entrepreneurs make is trying to compete with the big players instead of building on top of them! What we discuss with Laurent: + What is voice AI? + Bootstrapping vs. VC funding + Building trust with small businesses + The "crowd training" data model + Why small/local businesses are the target market + Test driving AI before subscribing + Competing with vs. building on top of AI giants + From AI company to data company + The 96% untapped market opportunity + Voice AI as a 24/7 lead generator Thank you, Laurent! #841 The robots are here — but should they tell you they're robots? In Part 2 of this two-part episode, Brien and Laurent dive deeper into the mechanics and vision behind GetOblic. Laurent explains how the platform enriches business profiles using local LLMs and AI agents, and shares a fascinating case study on AI-driven upsells for hair salons. The conversation covers how GetOblic makes money — a simple $59/month subscription with unlimited calls — and the unexpected SEO boost that came from voice AI increasing user time-on-page. Laurent also opens up about the company's ethical stance on AI transparency, why they chose not to offer voice cloning, and his advice for businesses looking to gradually adopt AI agents without losing the human touch. With 2,000 customers and 250,000 claimed listings, GetOblic is gaining serious traction — and Laurent's parting wisdom on building trust first, technology second, is something every entrepreneur can take to heart! What we discuss with Laurent: + AI enriches business profiles automatically + Hair salon upsell case study + $59/month unlimited calls + Voice AI boosts SEO through longer page engagement + Why GetOblic rejected voice cloning + The importance of disclosing AI to callers + Gradual AI adoption strategy for businesses + Google Calendar integration for booking + 2,000 customers and growing + Trust first, technology second Thank you, Laurent! Isabelle Blaser  - Vet Receptionists On the State of the Veterinary Field: "I think it's just a nationwide thing. That vet hospitals are understaffed and overworked and they always need an extra set of hands." Pets are like family to a great majority of our population.  As living creatures, these pets need help.  Sometimes just a checkup, and sometimes something deeper, such as surgery.  Regardless of what they need, they are the animals we care about and so we want them to be taken care of. The world of veterinary medicine is a challenging one.  The volume of pets is increasing, the volume of veterinarians and technicians is decreasing.  The workload is simply too much for most people to bear for anything considered long term. But does it have to be this way? Isabelle Blaser is the incredible manager at Vet Receptionists, a company designed to lift much of the burden found in most veterinary clinics, by taking calls and helping reduce the workload of the overworked staff.  By doing this, Isabelle and her crew at Vet Receptionists are able to help their client's employees keep doing all they need to do, keep them sane and keep them happily employed. In this episode Isabelle shares the problems facing most veterinary clinics and the solutions that can turn a struggling practice into a place of happiness.  Though most veterinary clinics may not be struggling financially, mentally and culturally they are often a house of cards.  Many times without the doctors or clinic owners even knowing of the issues or demands being made on their team. Listen as Isabelle explains the need for improved customer service to allow your clients to be treated better, as well as your employees. Enjoy! This week, Elvis and Barb sit down with Lori Margiotta, the founder of Bookkeeper for Dentists (https://bookkeeperfordentists.com/), to talk about how labs and dental offices can grow together by focusing on one key number: case acceptance. Lori shares her journey from high school “recall girl” to practice manager, lab sales rep, and now consultant helping dental offices understand their business metrics. She breaks down how labs can help their clients track simple data like lab expenses and unbooked treatment to reveal hidden opportunities. With decades in the dental industry, Lori shows that when dentists increase their case acceptance, everyone wins — including the labs.
