Crown Council Mentor of the Month | Helping Dental Teams Build a Culture of Success
If you would also like to build the new page here is a paragraph to describe the podcast: In this inspiring conversation with Dr. Jen Derse, hosted by Stuart and Steve Anderson, listeners get a candid look at how a small-town Wisconsin kid, “band geek,” and self-proclaimed “Jenergy” machine built a thriving career in cosmetic dentistry—and then had to reinvent herself when she could no longer practice clinically. Jen shares practical, immediately usable insights on leadership, culture, and case acceptance: how to bring patients into collaborative treatment planning, motivate teams through tiny gains and big celebrations, empower staff to design the systems they use, and weave “doing good” (like humanitarian trips and Smiles for Life) into the fabric of a practice so it builds trust and loyalty. Dentists and teams will walk away with a renewed vision of what it means to be a maker, not a taker, fresh language to communicate more clearly and compassionately, and concrete ideas to strengthen their practice culture, patient relationships, and personal resilience. A few highlights worth mentioning: Founder and former Chief Clinical Director of Espire Dental, helping grow it into a large multi-location organization. Nationally and internationally recognized speaker, educator, mentor, and consultant. Mentor at the Kois Center and educator for dentists around the world. Graduate of Marquette University School of Dentistry with advanced leadership training through Harvard Business School Online, McKinsey Leadership Academy, and The Ritz-Carlton Leadership Center. Founder of the Espiration Foundation, providing care and support to underserved populations in the Dominican Republic and Guatemala. Recently transitioned from full-time executive leadership to focus on what she loves most: mentoring, coaching, consulting, and teaching.
What if the greatest key to success in business, family, and faith wasn't what you gained—but what you gave away?In this inspiring conversation, Pastor Jared sits down with Steve Anderson, founder of a thriving dental construction company, to discuss leadership, generosity, and trusting God's direction. Steve shares how a simple prompting from God during a 15-minute drive changed the trajectory of his business and his life. This conversation is filled with practical wisdom, powerful stories, and a fresh perspective on what it means to lead with an open hand. Whether you're a business owner, team leader, parent, or someone looking to grow in your faith, you won't want to miss this episode.

Steve Anderson was a milkman in South Carolina before he picked up a phone in healthcare recruiting. Twenty-five years later, he got laid off at 48 — part of a 1,500-person RIF — with five daughters, a mortgage, and no plan B. Three months in, they pitched their first investor. He told them they were idiots and hung up. That call is the reason Optigy exists in its current form. Steve and his co-founders rebuilt the company in 48 hours. No clients, only partners. No vendor relationships, no race to the bottom, no "send us reqs and we'll send you names." It cost them roughly $3.5M in walked-away deals in year one. It also got them in a room with one of the largest healthcare organizations in the country, where they built the first physician healthcare recruitment team in the ACO space — on a $400 website, an ATS they didn't own, and a phone they hadn't bought yet. Year one: $1.1M off six months of real building. Year two: $3.7M. Year three, closing January 2027, on track for $19.4M. 53 partners, 84% close rate, only two partners lost in two years. A private equity deal closed December 2025 that changed what's possible from here. This episode is the operator's playbook behind that arc. Why "partners, not clients" isn't marketing — it's a P&L decision. What broke in Q1 of year two when the credit card bills came due. What Steve learned in-house at a company that saved his life five months after a heart attack he didn't see coming. And the line his older brother gave him that reshaped how he thinks about time: "I have lived longer than I have left to live." If you've been waiting for the right moment to bet on yourself, this is the one to listen to twice. What You'll Learn: Why "partners, not clients" is the model that scaled Optigy from zero to a $19.4M run-rateThe exact moment Year 1 broke — and the leadership shift that fixed itHow to walk into a 2,200-location healthcare org with no website and no ATSWhat in-house recruiting teaches you that no agency seat ever canThe five-part call structure and where 90% of recruiters fall apart on the transitionWhy "work works" is the only input that matters early — and what replaces it as you scaleThe diligence questions that protect founders from the wrong PE partner

Wall Street Journal bestselling author Steve Anderson reveals how Jeff Bezos transformed calculated risk-taking into Amazon's competitive advantage by analyzing 20+ years of shareholder letters. Struggling to scale without losing your entrepreneurial edge? This episode exposes the counterintuitive growth frameworks that separate billion-dollar companies from businesses stuck in stasis. You'll learn: how "successful failure" accelerates innovation while reducing actual business risk, the two-way door decision framework that eliminates bureaucratic bottlenecks, why customer obsession (not customer service) creates self-sustaining growth flywheels, and the six-page memo technique that replaces risky gut decisions with strategic velocity. Steve breaks down Amazon's four growth cycles—test, build, accelerate, scale—into actionable frameworks for entrepreneurs building $100K to $10M+ businesses. Perfect for established business owners (2-10 years operation) who've reached the dangerous plateau where playing it safe becomes the riskiest strategy. Steve shares how insurance industry consultants can apply billion-dollar principles without billion-dollar resources, including the "day one mindset" that prevents the painful decline toward irrelevance. This episode connects directly to sustainable business growth strategies, strategic risk management frameworks, and innovation-driven enterprise building. Whether you're automating operations, building authority platforms, or scaling service businesses, these proven principles show how protection and aggressive growth work together—not against each other. In a special year end episode of Off Panel, we look at the defining themes of 2025 in comics with the help of retailer Steve Anderson from Third Eye Comics, The Beat's Heidi MacDonald, and writer Matthew Rosenberg. Up first is Anderson (1:37), whose theme is the impact of DC's Absolute line, as we discuss the Image Revolution of it all, unlocking the cool, the area of effect it's had on other comics, good times he sees on the horizon, how new readers are behaving, why Absolute has popped, how creators and publishers can capitalize on this, and more. After that is MacDonald (32:22), whose theme was the lack of new characters in direct market comics, as we discuss why that's a problem, the most successful new(ish) characters, recycling existing ideas, why it's a 2025 theme, attempts to make new characters happen, what's lost without them, marketing struggles, what needs to happen, and more. And to close is Rosenberg (1:06:59), whose theme is how comics are running behind the rest of pop culture, as we discuss the inferiority complex in comics, the cost that comes with this lag, the importance of cool, how this can change, how the market factors into this, and more.
In this episode, i sit down with Steve Anderson, a renowned expert in business risk, innovation, and strategic growth. In this episode of Fingal's Cave, host Ian Priston talks with Steve Anderson - creator of the iconic Floydboots website, visited over a million times by collectors, and author of the 2024 book Wizardo: Stories of a Bootlegger.Steve reflects on five decades of Pink Floyd: from being a 12-year-old at Wembley Empire Pool in November 1974 and the heartbreak of his prized Stoke bootleg being broken - to the challenge of hunting down and thrill of listening to rare titles. He recalls leaving home at 3am from Knebworth 1975, the ferocity and spectacle of the Animals tour, the monumental experience of The Wall shows, and meeting the band at the premiere of The Wall film.Steve also shares two extraordinary encounters with Syd Barrett in the 1990s - fleeting but unforgettable glimpses of the band's elusive founding genius. Along the way, he discusses Barrett superfan the late Bernard White, the legacy of John Wizardo, his adventures as a record dealer, and the time he was offered Roger Waters' Live at Pompeii bass. It is a fascinating story of how a lifetime can be shaped by music, soundtracked by Pink Floyd. This episode is in stereo - because, well, it just had to be. And if you think you hear a fly buzzing, dogs wanting attention, or even church bells chiming in the distance… you are not imagining things. Consider them accidental Pink Floyd–style sound effects.Subscribe to Fingal's Cave for more journeys to the edges of Pink Floyd music history.
For modelers who've ever stood in front of the aftermarket display with credit card in hand knowing they should walk away but simply can't, this episode is your support group. We welcome Bob "The Voice of Bob" Bair to the third chair, and immediately dive into his current Tamiya P-38 build—a project that's gradually transformed from a straightforward kit into a showcase of just about every aftermarket part available. The conversation takes a sharp turn into the evolving world of online modeling communities. We examine how virtual build sessions emerged from pandemic necessity but now serve modelers in isolated locations who might otherwise lack community connections. While we celebrate these digital opportunities, we all agree there's something irreplaceable about in-person modeling sessions—the spontaneous sharing of techniques, the camaraderie, and even the simple joy of "throwing stuff at each other" as Bob puts it.We tackle a thought-provoking question from Steve Anderson's modeling journal: what's one thing we wish we would have started five years ago? The answers range from practical (better organization) to technical (3D printing and figure painting skills). Mike's admission that he hasn't dedicated enough time to develop figure painting skills despite knowing how much they enhance armor models resonates as a universal modeling truth—we all have skills we wish we'd developed earlier.Between updates on current projects and discussions of exciting new kit announcements (from Japanese artillery to the mysterious B-21 Raider), we explore the balance between modeling ambition and reality. Whether you're struggling with aftermarket addiction or wondering how to better connect with fellow modelers, this episode offers both commiseration and inspiration.
