In the early 80s, New York City's Gansevoort Meatpacking District, a small irregular patch of the West Village, was a wild confluence of meat market workers, gay men hitting The Mineshaft or The Anvil, transgendered prostitutes, homeless huddled around burn barrels, New Jersey mafiosos, veterans of three wars, heroes of the French Resistance, and Holocaust survivors. I was newly arrived to New York City when I began working at Adolf Kusy Meats in 1982, a young man barely out of college who had never imagined himself in any city, much less New York. I had decided I was going to be a fiction writer and while ignorant of what that might entail, I understood writers lived in New York. From the start, Kusy's seemed the perfect place for a budding writer looking for life experience, a singular, endlessly entertaining circus. When I interviewed Red, my old boss at Kusy's in October of 2013, the first thing he said was, “I wish now I had a tape recorder and had just recorded every day down there. Just the fucking stories alone, the shit people came up with every day, the insanity of that place.” It's also the story of a young couple fresh from the Midwest making a life together. We were college sweethearts, seduced by the glamour and excitement of the East Village, its fashion model roommates, conceptual art openings, and junkies lined up outside bombed out buildings. We tried to live with an intensity that could only lead us to ruin. The Heart is Meat (Oil on Water Press, 2025) is a re-creation of a mythic time and place in New York City that can never exist again, an evocation of a vanished attitude, a pre-networked American Romanticism. On this episode of the Story Engine podcast, we talk to Massimo Bacchus, author of the book 'I Am Enough.' Massimo shares his personal journey of transformation from being a 'smart jerk' to becoming a better leader through self-love. He discusses the myths and coping mechanisms we develop as children to navigate the world, and how these patterns can hinder our growth as adults. Massimo emphasizes the importance of learning to love ourselves and finding validation from within, rather than seeking external validation. He believes that our universal purpose in life is to learn to truly love ourselves and accept all aspects of who we are. On This Episode Our childhood experiences shape our beliefs and coping mechanisms, which can hinder our growth as adults. Seeking external validation and constantly striving to be 'enough' can lead to stress, damaged relationships, and a lack of fulfillment. Learning to love ourselves and finding validation from within allows us to be present, experience joy and sadness, and be our best selves in relationships. Self-love is an ongoing practice that requires acceptance of our limitations, mistakes, and strengths. By prioritizing our relationship with ourselves, we can be better leaders and create positive change in the world. We Discuss: 03:48 The Struggle with 'Not Enough' and Defensive Behavior 09:11 The Cost of Seeking External Validation and Control 15:00 The Universal Purpose: Learning to Love Ourselves 28:01 The Transformation: Embracing Self-Acceptance and Authenticity 36:01 The Power of Vulnerability and Human Connection
One of the recent exhibitions at the A.E. Backus Museum and Gallery focused on the connection between Bean and one of his collectors, journalist W.M. Kiplinger. Not only did the exhibit feature splendid paintings, but it also featured numerous letters of correspondence from Kiplinger to Backus as well as other artists under his tutelage including Alfred Hair and other members of the Highwaymen. The exhibit in its entirety provided a unique glimpse into the Indian River region of Florida just as the state experienced rapid change. Though many people experienced the exhibit firsthand, I felt it was worthy of being shared with an even broader audience even if it was auditory rather than visual. It's an entertaining and uplifting look at simpler times in Florida.

ALGOL is one of those topics that's haunted the show for a while. It comes up any time we talk about programming languages, and with good reason. Many of the features and ideas found in modern languages have their roots in ALGOL. Despite that influence, ALGOL itself remains somewhat obscure. It never reached the highs of a C or LISP. In this series we are going to look at ALGOL from 1958 all up to 1968, keeping a careful eye on how the language evolved, how it's problems were addressed, and how new problems were introduced. Sterling Bakus is a scholar of 3D printing, having built his very own Lamborghini Aventador that “at least from five feet away, you wouldn't be able to tell that it wasn't real.” The internet took notice, as did Kevin and Willie. “For car guys and car enthusiasts and shop owners, this is something you should truly pay attention to,” says Willie. “This is great technology.” And best of all, it won't bankrupt you. Far from it. For less than the cost of a decent welder, you can purchase a quality printer and scanner and be on your way. “I don't have a large format printer,” notes Backus. “I print small sections on my printer and then glue them all together.” Sounds simple, right? Just wait until you hear what he's working on now! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
