Welcome to The DSA Podcast by Di Soca Analyst (DSA). Our guest today is Adrian Dutchin, one of Guyana's top soca artists. Born the first of six, Adrian Dutchin first appeared on the scene in 1998 as part of the group "Seven." He was the lead singer of the group for four years before venturing into music on his own, and was signed to Kross Kolor records by Burchmore Simon. Adrian continued to work on his music and eventually came out on top in several competitions in Guyana - the Road March, twice, and once with Chris Wilson for the song "Buxton Spice." He also made a name for himself in the Soca Monarch competition, winning three titles to-date. After winning the Road March in 2006 Adrian became a member of "X2 (Times Two)". He recorded with Kross Kolor Records and he was subsequently drafted by renown Bajan band Krosfyah as one of their lead singers. Dutchin sees all this as his opportunity to work hard to "keep the flag flying." Adrian has graced the shores of several countries, including the USA, England, Canada, St. Lucia, Antigua, Barbados, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Turks and Caicos, St. Maarten and St. Croix. He has performed with most of the big names in soca such as Rupee, Machel Montano, Alison Hinds, Edwin Yearwood, Peter Ram, Destra, Shurwayne Winchester and Iwer George. He has also worked with people such as Jumo Primo of Byron Lee's Dragonaires, Terry Gadraj and the Hit Man.

Neil Storey is an old pal from our magazine days who worked in the press office at Island. He looked after U2, Bob Marley, Steel Pulse, the B-52's and many others. About 15 years ago he began the mammoth task of compiling a series of books telling the story of virtually every record the label released in its pioneering history, tracking down and talking to all those involved - musicians, producers, designers, photographers, label staff – and collecting old music press ads and ephemera from the time. The book's almost a foot square so LP sleeves can be reproduced ‘actual size'. The first volume is just out, The Island Book Of Records 1959-1968, a thing of very great beauty. As David says, “it's like entering the record shop of your dreams.” We talked to Neil at his home in France about this and much else besides … … Chris Blackwell's involvement in the making of Dr No and the single Jamaican beach shot that told them they had a hit movie. … the album they released that no-one involved could remember. … Shotgun Wedding by Roy ‘C', Byron Lee and the Dragonaires, Lance Hayward, Millie Small's ‘My Boy Lollipop' … … the letter Blackwell sent to the workshy Spooky Tooth with threats of wage deductions. … the lucrative ascent of Jethro Tull. … the little-known compilations of Rugby songs, ‘Bawdy British Ballads' and risqué adult comedy that “saved the label's bacon” in the mid-‘60s. … the time Neil stumbled across Traffic's fabled Aston Tirrold cottage on a school camping trip. … the highly collectable “Birth of Ska' album that was never released. … one immortal week at the Marquee Club. … and why Island were banned for Olympic Studios. My guest for the Season 10-opener is Neil Fraser AKA Mad Professor. This Guyanese-born, British dub producer and engineer makes music that is a reflection of how he sees the world, which is to say, he sees people and places as deeply connected, deeply mixed, and he sees that who we are now carries reverberations of our ancestral roots. Press play to learn more! This episode features my reading of Guyanese poet John Agard's "Pan Recipe" (Oxford Book of Caribbean Verse, ed. Brown & McWatt, 2005), a brief sample of Byron Lee and the Dragonaires' “Jamaica Ska” (Kentone Records label, 1964), and a deep listen to Mad Professor & Jah Shaka's “Beyond the Realms of Dub” (Ariwa Sound Studio, 1982). It is with a heavy heart that I dedicate this episode to Jah Shaka. Rest in Power.
And just like that... our last episode of the season!
We've all heard about Byron Lee and the Dragonaires but we've got the inside scoop- from his daughter! We had the pleasure of sitting down with the eloquent Julianne Lee (@Juliannetlee) as she told us about the myth, the legend, and the pioneer Byron Lee was. It was soooo good and engaging we had to split the interview in two! Treat yourselves to Part 1 here!
Join me as I sit down with Byron and discuss his new single Without You, with the Harmony Dreamers for their upcoming album, I Come From Earth and his book, Balance Your Choices – Life's Compact Guidebook for Happiness Your Way. Episode Notes This week Anthony Welcomes Nefertiti Matos Olivares and Chad Chennil the creative vision and voice behind Meggy Eggie of the wildly popular ATK Mystery Recipe podcast. We talk representation, diversity and what it took to bring a bi-lingual Low Vision character to life. The show blends entertainment with learning and not just how to execute a recipe. Teaching her friends about being blind or low vision and showing her talents in the kitchen Meggy has quickly become a fan favorite. Nefertiti and her amazing voice and laugh bring such heart to Meggy and I am so happy they brought a few clips for us to enjoy as well. Then in the second hour Anthony welcomes Marty Sobo and Michael Babcock of Unmute Presents. This popular Tech call and emerging business has become a goto staple for our community and we get to know them behind the proverbial MIC's. Their individual stories and journey of friendship makes them dynamic partners who enrich ACB and the Blind Low Vision community beyond. Since I will be beginning my holiday celebrations early this year I did not want to leave Sunday Edition Audiences without any new shows before the new year so we pre-recorded this episode for you. Many Thanks to Nefertiti, Chad, Marty and Michael. Thanks to Tim Cumings for editing and Byron Lee for producing. New shows will return January 8th. Questions and comments for the show can be sent to: Sunday editionac@gmail.com
Episode Notes Anthony is taking a well deserved break this week and in his place we have Andrea DeKlotz and Byron Lee guest hosting Sunday Edition. In the first hour we hear from Ardis Bazyn, president of Independent Visually Impaired Entrepreneurs (IVIE) about their Virtual Expo. We then discuss our favorite Halloween memories. We also get to hear a segment from a spooky story written by Eris Young who is a multi-genre writer known for their debut book They/Them/Their: A Guide to Nonbinary & Genderqueer Identities. Their books are available on BARD and Bookshare. In the second hour, Rachel Schroeder joins us to discuss her her career as an assistive technology specialist and board member of ACB. We also chat with Don Katz about being a blind potter. We discuss his transition into blindness and his process as an artist. Thank you to Anthony Corona for allowing us to take over Sunday Edition. It was an experience we will not forget!

b. 13 January 1946, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. Boris Gardiner, bass player, vocalist and musical director, has never been one of reggae's most celebrated names, but he has remained a permanent fixture in the music and has three major UK chart hits to his credit. His bass-playing skills first emerged in the late 60s, and the bands he graced included Byron Lee's Dragonaires, the Aggrovators, Crystalites and many more. His first brush with chart success was ‘Elizabethan Reggae', recorded for Lee, which hit number 14 in January 1970. Gardiner toured the UK in support of his hit, which, at first, was incorrectly credited to its producer. His debut album, again produced by Lee, was released the same year. In its wake, Gardiner immersed himself in session work, regularly playing as part of the Now Generation band, and he later became a member of Lee Perry's Upsetters, following Carlton and Aston ‘Familyman' Barrett's defection to the Wailers. His solid, incisive basslines were seldom prominent, yet always effective. In the 80s, as reggae was on the cusp of the digital era, an age likely to put paid to the careers of bass players, Gardiner's mellow, soulful voice came to the fore on a MOR reggae ballad, ‘I Want To Wake Up With You', which hit number 1 in the UK charts. Gardiner, who had been intermittently dogged by illness throughout the 80s, was finally receiving his due. His follow-up, ‘You're Everything To Me', went to number 11, and the seasonal ‘The Meaning Of Christmas' also scraped the charts.
Pianist Leslie Butler, another prodigious talent, Harold Butler is the writer of hit songs such as Hammond's One Step Ahead and Got to Get Away; Love Forever by Schloss; and Ernest Wilson's Let Love be Your Righthand Man.He also played on Cliff's Grammy-winning album, Cliff Hanger. His five solo albums include Africa on my Mind, a 1978 set that includes Crying in Soweto, the South African township that was a bedrock of black unity duing the Apartheid years. Keith Lyn migrated to the United States (US) in 1978 after leaving Byron Lee and the Dragonaires, living in Florida until he returned to Jamaica four years ago. But he never stopped calling Jamaica home."I never felt at home there. I felt at home here," Lyn said. The screensaver on his computer said 'Jamaica is on my mind'.He kept active in music, but with a smaller unit than before. "I set up a one-man band. I did a lot of work with the Jamaica Tourist Board and the American Society of Travel Agents, so I got to travel all over the world," Lyn said."I have taken it all over the world. Apart from BL&D (Byron Lee and the Dragonaires) I have travelled all over the world. The last place I went to was Turkey. Mash up the place. The one Jamaican. They had a Caribbean night. You had groups from Colombia, Mexico, one Jamaican man mash it up," Lyn said. "I been to China, Hungary, Iceland - twice. He faced his biggest audience in the Caribbean, though. "Trinidad is the place I appeared before the biggest crowd I ever played for, something like 40-something thousand people. People were in the trees and all that, at the Savannah," Lyn said.
In 1960 he joined Richard Ace's band the Rhythm Aces, which also included Delano Stewart, later of the Gaylads. With the group he recorded "Angella", and the local hit "A Thousand Teardrops". The group split up and by 1963 Gardiner had joined Kes Chin and The Souvenirs as vocalist, and began learning guitar. He went on to join Carlos Malcolm & the Afro Caribs with whom he started playing bass guitar after the original bassist left, and when that band ended he started his own group, the Broncos, named after the Bronco Club where they had a residency. He later played with Byron Lee's Dragonaires. In the late 1960s and 1970s he worked extensively as a session musician as a member of the Now Generation, The Upsetters, The Aggrovators, and The Crystallites. While working at Studio One he played on hits such as The Heptones' "On Top", Larry and Alvin's "Nanny Goat", and Marcia Griffiths' "Feel Like Jumping". As a solo artist, Gardiner had a hit with the song "Elizabethan Reggae" in 1970, a version of Ronald Binge's "Elizabethan Serenade".[1] When the single was released in the United Kingdom, the first copies were printed with the label incorrectly identifying Byron Lee (not Gardiner) as the performer

There are multiple theories about the origins of the word ska. Ernest Ranglin claimed that the term was coined by musicians to refer to the "skat! skat! skat!" scratching guitar strum. Ranglin asserted that the difference between R&B and ska beats is that the former goes "chink-ka" and the latter goes "ka-chink". Another explanation is that at a recording session in 1959 produced by Coxsone Dodd, double bassist Cluett Johnson instructed guitarist Ranglin to "play like ska, ska, ska", although Ranglin has denied this, stating "Clue couldn't tell me what to play!" A further theory is that it derives from Johnson's word skavoovie, with which he was known to greet his friends. Jackie Mittoo insisted that the musicians called the rhythm Staya Staya, and that it was Byron Lee who introduced the term "ska". Derrick Morgan said: "Guitar and piano making a ska sound, like 'ska, ska,"
