Northeast Ohio Iranian community members react to ongoing war, talks of a ceasefire The war in Iran began just over a month ago, when airstrikes launched by the U.S. and Israel killed Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had led the country for more than three decades. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was named successor soon after. At least 1,900 Iranians have been killed since the war began, according to Iran's Health Ministry. On the U.S. side, 13 service members were killed, and more than 300 have been injured. Efforts to end the conflict remain uncertain. The U.S. has proposed a 15-point ceasefire plan, but Iranian officials have rejected it, calling the terms unrealistic. Last weekend, Pakistan's foreign minister announced that his country is willing to facilitate peace talks between the two nations. But beyond the headlines, the war is being felt deeply in Northeast Ohio. The region is home to a vibrant and longstanding Iranian American community that shares its culture through traditions such as local Ramadan festivities and One World Day. This year, Cleveland also hosted its first Nowruz, or Persian New Year, celebration at City Hall. Tuesday on the "Sound of Ideas," we'll turn to members of that community to hear how they are processing this moment — balancing ties to their heritage, concern for loved ones abroad and life here in the U.S. Due to the sensitive nature of this topic, one of our guests will be referenced by their first name only. Guests:- Mohammad Sohrabi, Northeast Ohio Resident- Hengameh Arjomandi, MBA Candidate, Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University- Manouchehr, Northeast Ohio Resident Tax deadline nears Tomorrow is April, which in addition to the anticipated "April showers," means that Tax Day is approaching on April 15 — and there are some changes to take note of. For instance, a growing number of filers are facing tax refund delays amid the Internal Revenue Service's decision to phase out paper checks. And we'll talk about the change to "no tax on tips" in which some filers will be able to deduct up to $25,000 of tips from federal income taxes. Kate Adie introduces stories on Cuba's multiple crises from blackouts to food shortages, what it's like living under another war in Lebanon, how Persian new year festivities were muted this year, what China thinks about the war in the Middle East, and how an archaeological dig in Georgia led to a political purge.More than ten million people were left in the dark this week in Cuba, as the third major blackout in a month hit the island. The US fuel blockade is taking its toll, but locals are now finding the courage to publicly criticise the communist government, finds Will Grant in Havana.Lebanon was quickly drawn into another war following the US-Israel bombardment of Iran. For many Lebanese, much of their life has been spent living amid conflict or the aftermath of war. Carine Torbey reports from Beirut. The Spring equinox marked the Persian new year festival of Nowruz, though celebrations were muted this year with the country at war, and emotions still raw from the thousands of protesters killed in January. Leila Molana Allen is British-Iranian and reflects on how Iranians inside the country - and in the diaspora - have been trying to draw strength from this ancient tradition.China has so far kept its distance from the US-Israel war with Iran - a strategy designed, perhaps, with an eye on longer-term advantages over the United States. But it might not be quite so straight-forward says Laura Bicker in Beijing. And in the Southern Caucasus, archaeologists are once again digging for fossils in Georgia following a political purge of the country's museum sector. Nowruz is a day of transformation and change of nature, and we should not look back and stop this celebration. Spring is not something that happens on calendars and is written on paper. Spring is something that happens in the heart and gives freshness, transformation and hope in the soul and behaviour of life. How good it is to take up the sieve of our faith at the beginning of the new year and sift the harvest of our negative thoughts with goodness. It is good to be grateful in the new year instead of complaining about the past life. Let no one repay anyone evil for evil. But constantly strive for goodness with each other and with all people. Respond to the bad deeds of others with goodness. Instead, it is better to carry each other's burdens in the coming year; not to make our own burdens heavier. Because our life is like the shadow of a tree that passes. Without faith, there will be no life. Man can receive eternal life only through faith in Christ.

Nowruz is the first day of the solar year, corresponding to the first day of Hamal in Afghanistan, and Farvardin in Iran. Nowruz is one of the oldest celebrations coming down to us from ancient times. Originating in ancient Balkh, Nowruz occurs at the beginning of spring, when trees bloom and wild flowers bloom in the fields and meadows, adding to the beauty of nature. Melodious birds sing sweetly and fly into the sky. Nowruz is considered the beginning of the New Year in Afghanistan and Iran. In some other countries also, namely Tajikistan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Syria, Kurdistan, Georgia, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Albania, China, Turkey, Turkmenistan, India, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan, it is an official holiday and the people there celebrate this festival.

I share the range of emotions that have been coming up during this time, both personally and collectively. I also discuss the pressure that can exist to express or explain every single feeling one may be having, especially on social media. This episode focuses on holding space for nuance, making space for mixed emotions, and trusting your own experience without needing to define it for others. I also explore the guilt that can show up, whether you're a child of immigrants or just being a part of this generation, and how to recognize it without feeling defined by it. This episode is hopefully a reminder that multiple things can be true at once and that we can staying informed, while also taking care of ourselves...and validating the heaviness we feel without needing to always pathologize our human experience.I'm thinking of my fellow Iranians, those affected and hurt, the lives lost, and anyone who is experiencing the heaviness of the world. Since then, the US and Israel have killed more than 1,000 people across Iran and the Middle East, including 150 school children. Owliaei says that she is frustrated by the public discourse about Iran and the way that the language of “preemptive strikes” and “imminent threats,” sanitizes war. She reminds listeners that there were signs that the US was gearing up for an attack on Iran and that it costs the nation $1 billion per day to wage this unjust and illegal war. She insists that “just because it's started, doesn't mean it needs to go on” and “every minute we can shorten this war is a success.” In her latest article for Truthout, she discusses the need for resistance and support for grassroots organizing like Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, Taxpayers Against Genocide, and No Tech for Apartheid. They also discuss Nowruz (the Spring holiday in Iran), the history of the 1953 CIA-backed coup, the deportation of Iranians following the 12-day US-Israel war on Iran last summer, and the Women, Life, Freedom movement. She wants people to understand that everything that's going on domestically has a foreign policy effect. Owliaei joined A Public Affair last summer to talk about the US and Israel's 12-day war on Iran.  Note: This pledge drive interview was edited to remove parts of the show dedicated to station fundraising. We thank our listeners for their generous support. Negin Owliaei is Truthout's editor-in-chief. As we welcome Nowruz this year, we do so with a heavy heart. And yet, even in difficult times, we feel called to honor and commemorate this ancient, beautiful tradition. Nowruz reminds us that light returns, spring follows winter, and renewal is always possible. For Episode 186 of the Modern Persian Food podcast, we are revisiting one of our most beloved and foundational episodes — Episode 126 — where we walk through every part of the Persian New Year season and its rich cultural meaning. Nowruz (also spelled Norooz) literally translates to "new day." Celebrated for over 3,000 years and rooted in the rhythms of the spring equinox, it is the biggest holiday of the year in Persian culture — a time of rebirth, reflection, and reconnection. In this replay, Beata and Bita cover the whole 2+ week celebration, including: ✨ Khaneh Takooni (Spring Cleaning) The ritual "shaking of the house" — a deep seasonal cleaning that symbolizes clearing out stagnant energy and preparing for a fresh start.

Afghan Radio - Sound of Life

People celebrate Nowruz not only in Afghanistan, but all the countries in the region celebrate their own diverse traditions with joy. Children are especially happy on this day. Because on this day, on Nowruz day, they go out with their families to see their friends and relatives. They eat all kinds of Nowruz sweets and cookies. They have fun and play with their friends. They enjoy seeing flowers, beautiful blossoms, and singing birds.

Afghan Radio - Sound of Life

In Afghanistan, Nowruz has always had its own special place. From Kabul to Mazar-e-Sharif, from Herat to Badakhshan, people try to celebrate this day with all their might and whatever their circumstances. Because Nowruz is a reminder of life; a reminder that after every winter, spring finally comes. People may not have new clothes, their table may be simple, but hope cannot escape from their hearts. One of the most important parts of Nowruz celebrations in Afghanistan is the red rose bar in Mazar-e-Sharif. This bar is not just a pastime; it is a symbol. The red rose shows that the earth, despite all the hardships it has seen, still grows beauty. People come from far away to look at the flowers, to forget their sorrows for a few hours, and to make a new path for their hearts.

Regarded as the pinnacle of Persian literature, his works are a household item for Persian-speaking families and read during the Yalda winter solstice festival and Nowruz spring equinox festival. He was also widely known amongst European intellectuals, with even Engels mentioning him to Marx in a letter.   Hafez lived in Shiraz under the waning Mongol Ilkhanate and at his death in 1390, the region was being incorporated into Timur's empire. What more do we know about Hafez's socio-political and cultural context? There are many mythical tales about Hafez. What can we know about his life? The influence of Hafez can't be underestimated. Tell us about his works. And what translations and secondary resources do you recommend? This week, I'm bringing back a favorite episode — a rich and delicious conversation with Sahar about Persian food, culture, and what life in Iran is really like beyond what most people ever get to see.We talk about everything from sour stews and rice bellies to tahdig, kebabs, Nowruz traditions, and Sahar's experience growing up in Tehran. You'll learn about the incredible diversity across Iran's regions — and yes, we even touch on controversial dishes involving sheep's heads and yogurt drinks.Sahar is warm, hilarious, and generous in sharing what Persian food means to her — and I walked away hungry and more connected to a place I knew very little about.Whether this is your first time hearing the episode or you're tuning in again, I hope it leaves you curious, comforted, and craving saffron rice.

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"I have long been inspired by Iranian culture and particularly its music and poetry.  Much to my surprise, my response to the field recording of the city of Isfahan eventually took the form of a kind of oblique word-picture, prompted by the images and themes which the original field recording sounds brought to mind, which I then set to the sound of a Daf percussion arrangement. One of the main jumping off points was also the idea of the festival of the spring equinox, ‘nowruz' - which literally means' ‘new day' in Persian, and which is a central celebration in Iranian culture.  "The Daf is a traditional Iranian percussion instrument associated with nowruz celebrations amongst many other things, whose unique sound I adore and which I felt tied in with the themes of sonic heritage in this context. My dear friend Mobin Hosseini from Sanandaj, Iran, kindly provided the accompanying Daf track. The field recording appears in its entirety, since this seemed the most fitting soundtrack to the rich imagery it inspired for me. I hope it might prove similarly evocative for anyone who listens to my contribution to the project."  Nowruz in Isfahan reimagined by Fiona Conn @outsidetheoutlines. ——————— This sound is part of the Sonic Heritage project, exploring the sounds of the world's most famous sights. John Forsyte has led Pacific Symphony since 1998, during which time it has emerged as the largest orchestral institution founded in the U.S. in the past 50 years. Under his leadership, the Symphony has grown in national and international stature. Pacific Symphony made its debut at Carnegie Hall in 2018 as one of two orchestras invited to perform in Philip Glass' 80th birthday celebration. That same year, the Symphony embarked on its first tour of China, performing in five major cities. The 2017-18 season culminated with the Symphony's first nationally televised appearance on PBS's Great Performances. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Forsyte spearheaded innovative community engagement efforts, including hundreds of video productions for schoolchildren and nonprofit partners. The Symphony also launched Symphony on the Go, a mobile stage concert series offering free performances in neighborhoods throughout the region. For its dedication to serving the community during this challenging time, Pacific Symphony was recognized as the Nonprofit of the Year for the Central/South Orange County region. Forsyte's decades-long collaboration with Music Director Carl St.Clair has pioneered new concert formats and audience engagement methods, helping build an audience base that better reflects the demographics of Orange County. These initiatives include semi-staged opera productions, annual children's offerings, the innovative Café Ludwig chamber music series with Orli Shaham and Pacific Symphony principal musicians. A major milestone in Forsyte's tenure was the creation of the American Composers Festival (ACF). The festival has featured thematic and contextual programs, world premieres, commissioned works, and performances of rarely heard pieces, highlighting the Symphony's commitment to innovative and compelling programming. Over the years, the ACF has garnered critical acclaim and featured prominent composers such as John Adams, Philip Glass, and William Bolcom, and has attracted a wide range of audiences, further solidifying Pacific Symphony's reputation as a leader in promoting American music. During Forsyte's tenure, Pacific Symphony became the only orchestra in California to receive a James Irvine Foundation New California Arts Fund Grant. This supported the creation of the Building Communities Concert Series, featuring cultural celebrations such as Lunar New Year, Nowruz, and a free family festival around the Lantern Festival, further expanding the Symphony's engagement with the region's diverse communities. Pacific Symphony has expanded its community engagement programs, creating transformative initiatives like arts-X-press (a middle school arts immersion camp), Heartstrings (a partnership with 47 nonprofit organizations), the free Lantern Festival, Strings for Generations in partnership with the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center, and Santa Ana Strings. Under Forsyte's guidance, the Symphony's award-winning music education offering, the Freida Belinfante Class Act program, has grown from 7 to 30 schools. A strategic priority during Forsyte's tenure has been the expansion of the Pacific Symphony Youth Ensembles program. This initiative now includes four distinct groups: Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra, Pacific Symphony Youth Wind Ensemble, Pacific Symphony Santiago Strings, and Pacific Symphony Youth Concert Band. Together, these ensembles serve over three hundred students annually, offering exceptional training and performance opportunities for young musicians across Southern California. The program's transformative impact is demonstrated by the high rate of students accepted into leading music conservatories and universities. Under Forsyte's leadership, Pacific Symphony has maintained a balanced budget for more than two decades while significantly increasing its fundraising efforts. Contributed income has grown fivefold, and the organization has raised an additional $35 million for its endowment during this period. Forsyte's contributions to the arts have been widely recognized. He has been honored with the Helen M. Thompson Award from the American Symphony Orchestra League and the Helena Modjeska Cultural Legacy Award by Arts Orange County. He currently serves on the Chief Executive Roundtable at UC Irvine and the boards of Arts Orange County and Orange County Music and Dance. -- Critical Mass Business Talk Show is Orange County, CA's longest-running business talk show, focused on offering value and insight to middle-market business leaders in the OC and beyond.
