Text: Romans 8:1-4 Notes: + In Jesus you have all the acceptance you will ever need. - John 12:42-43 - 1 Corinthians 4:3-4 "To please God… to be a real ingredient in the divine happiness… to be loved by God, not merely pitied, but delighted in as an artist delights in his work or a father in a son- it seems impossible, a weight or burden of glory which our thoughts can hardly sustain. But so it is." — C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory. “We all automatically gravitate toward the assumption that we are justified by our level of sanctification, and when this posture is adopted, it inevitably focuses our attention not on Christ but on the adequacy of our own obedience. We start each day with our personal security resting not on the accepting love of God and the sacrifice of Christ but on our present feelings or recent achievements in the Christian life.” Richard Lovelace, Dynamics of Spiritual Life: An Evangelical Theology of Renewal (Preaching and Teaching for Individual Renewal). + In Jesus you have all the freedom you need. + Dominion – Desire – Deeds – Death - Romans 6:12 - Romans 6:20-21 - Romans 7:5 - Romans 7:15 - Romans 7:20 - Romans 6:20-23 “There is no greater mockery than to call a sinner a free man. Show me a convict toiling in the chain gang, and call him a free man if you will; point out to me the galley slave chained to the oar, and smarting under the taskmaster's lash whenever he pauses to draw breath, and call him a free man if you will; but never call a sinner a free man, even in his will, so long as he is the slave of his own corruptions. In our natural state, we wore chains, not upon our limbs, but upon our hearts, fetters that bound us, and kept us from God, from rest, from peace, from holiness, from anything like freedom of heart and conscience and will. The iron entered into our soul; and there is no slavery as terrible as that. As there is no freedom like the freedom of the spirit, so is there no slavery that is at all comparable to the bondage of the heart.” - Charles Spurgeon + Dominion - Desire - Deeds - LIFE! + Jesus dying for us is necessary for the Spirit living in us. - Galatians 3:13-14 - Romans 13:8-10 “Run, John, run, the law commands but gives us neither feet or hands. Far better news the gospel brings: it bids us fly and gives us wings.” – John Bunyan.

Fly! Be Free! Romans 6:1-23 Introduction These Roman Christians were united with Jesus Christ, united in Jesus Christ and all because of Jesus Christ alone. How could this be? Entirely due to the twin wellsprings of God's grace and mercy. And so do we, as all Christians do down through time! In these three chapters, Romans 5-8, Paul is explaining about life under grace – life for all those who claim Jesus to be their Master, their Lord and their God – having responded to God's free offer! Here in Romans 5-8, Paul shows from 8 different angles or lenses about life for all those who claim to be a Christian disciple – somebody who has decided to follow Jesus. It's like he is creating this fabulous stained glass window or a tapestry about life for the Christian believer who is now under grace and has Jesus as their master and Lord. What's going on? What was happening here in Chapter 6? In this section of Romans, Paul wants the believers in Rome to know, understand, recognize and comprehend all that living under grace encompasses. Paul knows that right thinking leads to right living. Paul is writing basic doctrine to this group of believers in Rome. There are 3 possible scenarios in Paul's thinking – 2 here in Romans 6 and another in Romans 7! Paul had obviously encountered this thinking before – perhaps even in his own life! So let's look at these scenarios together… As Paul writes, he informs the readers Exodus 21:1-6 – Freedom from slavery or continue being a slave… Two Scenarios! Scenario 1 (v1) Informing them of what they were in the past! Informing them of what they are now! Informing them of what they are to do in the future! And why all this, Paul? Informing them about Jesus! Scenario 2 (v15) Informing them of what they were in the past! Informing them of what they are now! Informing them of what they are to do in the future! And why all this, Paul? Informing them about Jesus! Recapitulation Conclusion Application - What about us? Right mouse click or tap here to save the audio in MP3 format. Paul wants you to experience being set free. He doesn't want you to be set free for just a moment, but wants you to be set free forever. Forever freedom comes from receiving the free gift of grace offered to you in Christ.
In this episode, join Jen and AJ as they look at Ezekiel 37, and compare it to Romans 8, showing how even when you are in the middle of your despair when there seems to be no life left, the Spirit of God will breathe new life into your circumstances. This is one of the times when the Old Testament clearly points to the truth of new life and resurrection. When we are dead, we are dried, we're absolutely helpless and hopeless apart from Jesus Christ, He breathes his new life into us and we are actually dwelt by the very spirit of God. Tune in today and dive into Ezekiel's third vision where God showed him in the middle of a valley full of bones a picture of what God does for us spiritually. When you are in a place where you just can't see past your own dryness, failure, or despair, you can trust your Creator and your Recreator. Remember that God has reclaimed you. Sunday Morning
Across the first six chapters of Romans, Paul has made a few things very clear: We need to be reconciled to God and are incapable of accomplishing that on our own. In Romans 7, he is going to make one final case about the unreliable and counterproductive nature of religion insofar as bringing about justification and salvation. Paul emphatically states that even the Jewish Law, as holy and inspired as it may be, is not a means of salvation for us. He also offers us a proper understanding of the Law's purpose and place in our lives today. We cover all of this and more in this message. Listen as we uncover a true and certain way to overcome sin and stay in fellowship with God.
Romans 6:4-7 New Living Translation 4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives. 5 Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was. 6 We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. 7 For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.

Slavery to God is better than any freedom the world offers. This message was given by Pastor Mark Culton as part of our Romans teaching series.
Sunday Morning Sermon
Ever see a movie that shows a long time prisoner being released back into society? There were a few. The Shawshank Redemption comes to mind. Ole Morgan Freeman really shows the inner struggle one might face when suddenly living in a new freedom. If you haven’t seen the film, put it on your movie bucket list. In this study, Paul will be writing and speaking directly to the Jewish Christian in Rome and addressing this very issue. We’ll be reading Romans 7:1-6. Paul is continuing a section where he has described this new life in Christ. We have been given a new freedom. But now that we have been freed, how do we proceed? How will we live in this new life? And what about the past? How do we fit the past into the now? These are huge questions for the emerging church in Rome and they are huge to us as well.Paul masterfully uses the analogy of marriage to cover many of the aspects of this transition. In v 1-2 particular importance is placed in the fact that death ends a marriage. How does that make us feel? Knowing the death he is alluding to is Christ’s death, atoning for our sins, how does that make us feel? How we feel is part of Paul’s point. The direction of thought is being realigned from legal to relational. In v2-3 Paul continues the marriage analogy with yet another uncomfortable relational situation. Remarriage after the death of a spouse, while perfectly legal, is for all parties involved, complicated. In v-3, adultery is mentioned. How do we see adultery fitting into the following verse that states our new union with Christ is to prove fruitful to God?Paul is attempting to unite a divided Roman Church. The divisions present two thousand years ago are still manifest in our walk today. Given our new found freedom, how will we live free? How should the past shape our future? On what side of Christ’s death will we live? These are all questions the Roman Christians were facing and I believe we all struggle with today. It should be an interesting study!
Pastor Dane continues his series through the book of Romans with a sermon titled "I Am Free" from 6:12-19.
