27 After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, "Follow me." 28 And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. 29 And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?" 31 And Jesus answered them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance." 33 And they said to him, "The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink." 34 And Jesus said to them, "Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days." 36 He also told them a parable: "No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, 'The old is good.' God wants our hearts! We sometimes go through the motions, but miss the point. Don Pearson looks at an interaction between Jesus and the Pharisees in Luke and reminds us that loving God and loving others, isn't just about following rules. It first requires humility and repentance.

In a place like the South Bay, it's not difficult for us to see the ugliness of self-righteous religion. And though it may come as a surprise to some, Jesus actually beat us to the punch by about 2,000 years in his critique of self-righteous and self-serving religious practice. Yet Jesus' critique goes deeper, showing us that unless we really understand the problem of self-righteousness and intentionally replace it with something categorically different, we will be in danger of doing the very thing that we rightly find so ugly. So what is the alternative on offer in life with Jesus? And how does it actually play out in day-to-day South Bay life? Join us as we continue our Sermon On The Mount series with a teaching from Matthew 6:1-18, learning together to follow Jesus in losing our (self-righteous) religion.

How does what God does in our individual hearts have to do with the benefit of nations? That's the big question that Pastor Chris Kipp addresses in the message entitled "Christ & The Conscience". Teaching from John 6:41-51, Chris connects Jesus' teaching on how salvation works to the freedom of conscience that undergirds free societies. Chris challenges us to become thoughtful, reasonable and convictional Christians who see how our faith can be benefit, rather than a nemesis, to society. The Power of the Gospel, Part 5 Righteous or Self-Righteous A Sermon by Pastors Richard Sfameni, Lead Pastor of Victory Church in Providence, RI. Romans 2:1-16 NKJV 1Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. 2 But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things. 3 And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: 7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, 9 tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; 10 but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God. 12 For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law 13 (for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified; 14 for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, 15 who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them) 16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel. No one liked tax collectors, but Jesus befriended them and dined with them. It raised questions about who was in and out, and what it means to be close to God. The story teaches us that Jesus draws near to those who know they need him. Whoever thinks he is doing fine will keep him at a distance.
Have you ever killed someone? Most of us can say we haven't. But, have you ever been angry at someone? Most of us would say we have. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus begins to dismantle all human efforts we make to proclaim our own righteousness. He says that refraining from murder is good, but handling our anger righteously is what God really looks at.
Have you ever been around a construction site and gotten sawdust in your eyes? Or maybe at the beach and got some sand in your eyes. I grew up in a town with a saw mill. They cut boards of different sizes and lengths from logs. I got to go there only a couple of times and it was before there was strict adherence to OSHA rules like hard hat, hearing and eye protection. It was a treat. There was sawdust everywhere! As a kid, it only took me a few minutes to have it all over me and my clothes. And, yes, I got some in my eyes. Just like beach sand or the morning eye goo, sawdust in your eyes can make it hard to see, I mean, even a speck. Scripture says Jesus was a carpenter and the son of a carpenter. He knew about sawdust. I suppose he even got some sawdust in His eyes. One day Jesus was teaching the disciples and other people that had gathered around a hill. One of the things he was talking about was something in their eyes, like a speck of wood or straw. Funny Jesus was actually talking about two separate people with two separate things in their eyes. And He was talking about more than sawdust. It is a timely message for us today.

Have you ever thought you were a better Christian than other Christians? We can all be self-righteous at times, but it's bad theology. We can't compare our spiritual maturity to that of other Christ followers, who are also flawed human beings – we must compare ourselves to Christ. In this episode, the Perrys walk us through the theology that moves us to have more gracious, less judgmental spiritual walks. We all know that we are right, but when we lead with that, it implies that everyone else is wrong, and we can quickly become self-righteous in our rightness. In this highly charged time of polarities — right/wrong, you/me, us/them — how can we integrate a deeper understanding of our Unity Principles to create connection instead of deepening the chasms of separation? God has invited us to live fully aware of our sinfulness, and at the same time fully aware of God's grace. To live with both realities protects us from self-righteousness and allows us to live out the true way of Jesus. Romans 2:1-16 Speaker: Kyle Idleman
