Meet Paula Montgomery, the Women United Director for United Way of Greater New Bedford, in New Bedford Massachusetts. Paula started career climb in broadcast journalism, but soon found herself wanting a career that spoke more to her heart. A conversation with someone she was interviewing led to her first position in the nonprofit sector working with the American Cancer Society. In her role today, Paula has helped to facilitate a partnership with Financial Futures, a 12 week comprehensive financial literacy program for women. Through this partnership, Women's Money Matters was born. Welcome, Michael Lapides, a digital artist/photographer to In-Focus Podcast Number 85. Michael does documentary, photo-journalism, architectural, and fine art photography. He is also the co-curator of the New Bedford Whaling Museum's Common Ground Project, which offers members of the community an opportunity to lend their voice to the collective story of Greater New Bedford using writing, audio, video, and other means of recording. Mike Lapides attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He has also pursued painting, drawing, mixed media, and sculpture. Mike was a relatively early adopter of digital photography. His exhibition record includes the Boston Zen Center and, the Yager Museum at Hartwick College showcasing documentary work he did in Greenland as part of the exhibition he curated about New Bedford painter William Bradford using his photography to recreate scenes of Bradford's Arctic journey. http://www.cvrcinc.com/CVRC SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE reaches $50,000 goal.The Cape Verdean Recognition Scholarship Committee is celebrating its 17th year of the accomplishments of 32 outstanding scholars from the Greater New Bedford area, and will be awarding over $50,000. Due to the pandemic, the ceremony will be held at the New Bedford High School Parking Lot on June 26, 2021. The committee applauds the graduates for being determined to proudly graduate under very stressful conditions. We wish them much success, and hope that they will return and make a difference in our city someday.The committee has awarded over $495,000 to 453 recipients in the past 16 years. Our milestone was to reach $50,000 this year and we have succeeded in accomplishing this goal. In its 17th year of raising funds, the Cape Verdean Recognition Scholarship Committee has assisted young adults to attend universities and colleges such as UMASS Dartmouth, Bristol Community College, Boston University, Bridgewater State University, Howard University, Berklee College of Music, and Northeastern University to name a few.As in the past, the success of the efforts of this committee has largely been due to the contributions of their sponsors, organizations, businesses and individuals who have gone out of their way to give financial support to this important endeavor. Every year the money raised has been donated to the cause of increasing awareness, and the importance of educations and leadership for our young adults.The scholarships are open to all graduating seniors from the Greater New Bedford area regardless of race, color or creed. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, scholastic standing, extracurricular civic activities, letters of recommendation and leadership skills.The committee has a 501©3 status, and all contributions are tax deductible. Butch McCarthy has been a part of the musical fabric of the Southcoast since the seventies. He’s been involved in art and music all of his life but it wasn’t until he was in his 50s that he picked up a brush and began to paint seriously. Butch works from his home studio in Downtown New Bedford. He’s shown work at Gallery X and Frying Pan Galleries on the Cape. He works with acrylic paints on canvas and wood board.
