Public dollars. Private schools. Political firestorms. In this episode, Kevin talks with long-time school choice advocate John Schilling about what happens when education funding follows the student instead of the system. They dig into the proposed federal scholarship tax credit: what it is, who it helps, and why supporters say it's about opportunity—not ideology. Opponents fear it's the beginning of the end for public schools. Advocates say it's already helping students, especially those in underserved communities. From Florida's model programs to Washington's sharp divisions, this conversation reveals how political will, policy design, and real family needs are shaping the future of school choice. If education is supposed to be about students, then maybe the money should be too. This might be what you want to know. Kelly Schilling's feature debut film With or Without You is the powerful and impactful story of a mother, Sharon (Marta Dusseldorp) and a daughter, Chloe (Melina Vidler), who are forced to navigate the complicated reality of alcohol addiction, an affliction that Sharon uses to manage her anxiety alongside Valium and men. For Chloe, the man in her life, an ex-boyfriend, turns violent and aggressive, inflicting abuse on her by burning down her caravan, destroying her life savings and home in the process. In a bid to get to some kind of safety and sanctuary, Sharon and Chloe head on the road, meeting Dalu (Albert Mwangi) on the way, a West African man who is looking for work in the Australian countryside. With or Without You had its world premiere at the 2024 Adelaide Film Festival, the end result of a decades long journey for Kelly Schilling, who has written the script and directed the film from a lived-in perspective. It's that script, which has changed over the years into the text that it is today, that gives Marta, Melina, Albert, and the chorus of characters, the chance to bring light to a truth that exists within Australia, namely, the impact of alcohol addiction and the trauma left from partner abuse.Yet, lest I paint this film as being a dark, dramatic affair, Kelly knows to imbue these moments of difficulty and darkness with aspects of lightness and laughter. The bond that Sharon and Chloe have with one another feels lived in and real, with Marta and Melina bringing the mother-daughter relationship to life with a charm and level of cheekiness that means the film, at times, feels like a mirror. Schilling's script and direction understands the shades of life and the way that moments of joy can break through hours of pain and darkness, giving way to hope and the possibility of a better life along the way.In the following interview, Kelly talks about that balance of storytelling on a script level, what it was like working with Marta to build the character of Sharon, and what it means to tell a story from a lower socio-economic perspective, one that is so often written by people who live comfortably outside the societal place of being from a lower socio-economic background. With or Without You is out in Australian cinemas from 8 May, just in time for Mother's Day. It is a powerful, impressive film about mother-daughter bonds, one that's left a mark on me and that I have thought about long after that initial screening in Adelaide in 2024.Cinematographer Michael Tessari recently won an Award of Distinction from the Australian Cinematographer's Society. For those who are interested in the film, I also recommend checking out my interview with Albert Mwangi, which was released earlier in 2025, where he talks about working on With or Without You, as well as his work on another film which screened at Adelaide, Make it Look Real.Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Bluesky @thecurbau. My guest this month is Coach Emily Schilling. Coach Schilling is the director of strength and conditioning at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She works specifically with men's and women's golf as well as volleyball. On top of her role at U of I, she also serves on the Illinois NHSSCA advisory board. It was great to be able to have someone on who is in the collegiate sector and involved with the NHSSCA. We go over her background in strength and conditioning. Her journey from starting out at Wisconsin-La Crosse to ending up at Illinois. We cover various topics from mentorship, transitioning athletes from high school to college, keeping training simple, and more. Emily provides a tremendous wealth of knowledge and wisdom from her years of experience at the collegiate level. She provides a great perspective as she works to help bridge the gap between high school and collegiate strength coaches. Enjoy!Instagram: @illinois_strengthCoach Schilling presenting on volleyball training: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y4zUTxyluQ
We know that climate change disproportionately affects those of us who are already struggling. But can climate mitigation and adaptation policy be designed in a way that promotes environmental justice? And if so, how? We speak with Anna Shipp, Principal Policy Associate, and Joseph Schilling, Senior Research Associate, from the Urban Institute's Research to Action Lab about Justice40 — a Biden-era initiative that directed 40% of federal climate spending benefit equity-deserving communities. The Urban Institute, a nonprofit focused on equity and social mobility, has studied climate justice in depth, including the challenges of implementing Justice40. Although the initiative was repealed under the Trump administration, it remains one of the most ambitious attempts to embed environmental justice into federal climate policy — and offers valuable lessons for future efforts. IS DARK MATTER FROM BEFORE THE BIG BANG? 2/8: The Elephant in the Universe: Our Hundred-Year Search for Dark Matter by Govert Schilling (Author), Avi Loeb (Foreword) https://www.popularmechanics.com/space/a64379333/dark-matter-older-than-universe/ https://www.amazon.com/Elephant-Universe-Hundred-Year-Search-Matter/dp/0674248996 In The Elephant in the Universe, Govert Schilling explores the fascinating history of the search for dark matter. Evidence for its existence comes from a wealth of astronomical observations. Theories and computer simulations of the evolution of the universe are also suggestive: they can be reconciled with astronomical measurements only if dark matter is a dominant component of nature. Physicists have devised huge, sensitive instruments to search for dark matter, which may be unlike anything else in the cosmos―some unknown elementary particle. Yet so far dark matter has escaped every experiment. Indeed, dark matter is so elusive that some scientists are beginning to suspect there might be something wrong with our theories about gravity or with the current paradigms of cosmology. Schilling interviews both believers and heretics and paints a colorful picture of the history and current status of dark matter research, with astronomers and physicists alike trying to make sense of theory and observation. 2016 MILKY WAY

What is chakra counseling? Well, we are going to find out in this interview with Mikinzie Schilling, owner and CEO of Kindred Heart in Superior Wisconsin. In my personal opinion, the highlight of this time together is a heart chakra exercise. I can't wait for you to experience that. For those of you familiar with my flight deck oracle cards, you'll be interested in hearing how Mikinzie incorporates my cards into her healing sessions. Mikinzie is an astrologer, tarot reader, Holistic Therapist, Healing Touch practitioner, business owner and chakra counselor. Her business motto is “to reach and find the Kindred connection within”! This was inspired by the “Creation of Adam”, an art piece by Michelangelo that you might be familiar with. Let's give a warm welcome to Mikinzie as she arrives here in “Call IT in With Dar “! This week's episode is a special one! We are sitting down and talking to the director of the AZT bikepacking race John Schilling!! The first half of the show is more of a normal Like a Bigfoot Podcast as we dive into John's history with bikepacking and designing amazing routes (like the Queen's Ransom ride). In the second half of the show, co-host Thomas Mullins picks John's brain for info about sections of the Arizona Trail that Thomas will be tackling on foot in April during Destination Trail's Arizona Monster 300!! ….yes that's right…300 miles of trail running through southern Arizona. It is the first year for the event and is looking to be beyond epic! Thomas and our friend Phil Pinti are both taking on this challenge, so there will be more episodes about this event coming up over the next few months. Enjoy!!
