This week on Under the Radar with Callie Crossley: Massachusetts inaugurated a historic slate of top leaders with Maura Healey as governor and Kim Driscoll as lieutenant governor. Some believe Driscoll could reshape the traditionally low-key role. Meanwhile, in the U.S. House, days of chaos surrounded Republican Kevin McCarthy's bid to become speaker — what does this discord mean for governing in the new Congress? And as the state Legislature wrapped up its last session, lawmakers tried to push through a slew of bills, including one aimed at addressing the widespread thefts of catalytic converters. That and more during our full hour with the Mass Politics Profs. Find more of their analysis on their blog. GUESTS Erin O'Brien, associate professor of political science at UMass Boston Jerold Duquette, associate professor of political science and director of the public administration degree program at Central Connecticut State University Shannon Jenkins, associate dean of the college of arts and sciences at UMass Dartmouth and a professor of political science
This week on Under the Radar with Callie Crossley: The November 8th midterm elections brought some historic victories; Maura Healey became the first LGBTQ person to be elected governor in the history of the United States. But it also brought some surprises; the "red wave" Republicans were predicting was more of a trickle. We spent a full hour with the Mass Politics Profs to hear what they had to say in the wake of the elections. Find more of their analysis on their blog. Guests: Shannon Jenkins is the interim assistant dean of the college of arts and sciences at UMass Dartmouth and a professor of political science. The race in Rhode Island's Second Congressional District continues to heat up, with a flurry of new campaign ads this week, more national coverage and a visit by First Lady Jill Biden. There are now less than two weeks before voters choose between Democrat Seth Magaziner and Republican Allan Fung. All indications point to a close race, although Fung has had a small lead in a series of polls. The longtime former mayor of Cranston hopes to become the first Republican to represent Rhode Island in Congress in almost 30 years.

In Movement Matters: How Embodied Cognition Informs Teaching and Learning (MIT, 2022), Sheila L. Macrine (Professor in Cognitive Science, UMass Dartmouth) and Jennifer M. B. Fugate (Associate Professor in Health Psychology, Kansas City University) bring together experts to translate the latest findings on embodied cognition to inform teaching and learning pedagogy. Embodied cognition represents a radical shift in conceptualizing cognitive processes, in which cognition develops through mind-body environmental interaction. If this supposition is correct, then the conventional style of instruction—in which students sit at desks, passively receiving information—needs rethinking. Movement Matters considers the educational implications of an embodied account of cognition, describing the latest research applications from neuroscience, psychology, and cognitive science and demonstrating their relevance for teaching and learning pedagogy. After a discussion of the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of embodied cognition, contributors to the book describe its applications in language, including the areas of handwriting, vocabulary, language development, and reading comprehension; STEM areas, emphasizing finger counting and the importance of hand and body gestures in understanding physical forces; and digital learning technologies, including games and augmented reality. Finally, they explore embodied learning in the social-emotional realm, including how emotional granularity, empathy, and mindfulness benefit classroom learning. Movement Matters introduces a new model, translational learning sciences research, for interpreting and disseminating the latest empirical findings in the burgeoning field of embodied cognition. The book provides an up-to-date, inclusive, and essential resource for those involved in educational planning, design, and pedagogical approaches. At 2:49 pm on April 15, 2013, a pressure cooker bomb containing ball bearings and nails, exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Boylston Street. 14 seconds later, another bomb exploded 200 yards away. As the crowd began to panic and run, police officers and medical personnel jumped to action. As a result of the bombing, 3 died, including an 8 year old boy, and 264 people were injured. The suspects, later identified three days later, were Tamerlan Tsarnaev (26) and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (19). The brothers immigrated from Kyrgyzstan in 2002. Tamerlan was an amateur boxer, while Dzhokhar studied Marine Biology at UMass Dartmouth. The brothers, who were practicing muslims, had a disliking towards the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, more so Tamerlan (who influenced Dzhokhar). Tamerlan wanted revenge for what US forces were doing to the muslim community in both countries. On April 18, after their identities were posted everywhere, they shot and killed an MIT police officer while he was sitting in his cruiser. They then stole an Mercedes SUV and held the driver hostage. While they stopped for gas, the hostage escaped and called 911. After the Mercedes was ID'd, police attempted to stop the car, but a shootout ensued. Tamerlan was accidentally ran over by his brother while Dzhokhar was trying to flee. He died an hour later. The entire city of Boston and its surrounding areas were placed on lockdown as a manhunt began. The next day, Dzhokhar was found hiding in a parked boat in someone's backyard. He was arrested and charged with 30 counts. He was sentenced to death on June 24, 2015.
