Welcome, Toni Delgado-Green, the Arts & Culture Editor for The New Bedford Light, one of our community partners. Toni has loved to sketch since a very young age. She especially liked pencils or charcoal. As she says, "Whether through visual art, music, writing, spoken word, or modeling, creative expression is my thing." Toni Delgado-Green started as an art student. Writing, however, eventually felt like the more practical path for her. She says she's been lucky to channel that passion as the Arts & Culture Editor for The New Bedford Light since its inception. Toni is proud of the work The Light does and the way it connects with the South Coast community. She has a soft spot for surrealism and impressionism, and believes music is as essential as food and water. Local culture and history are part of that nourishment. Toni Delgado-Green dabbled in the modeling world as a young teacher, but says she lacked the confidence needed to succeed. Now, she's approached this new venture with a new mindset and hopes to inspire others by her example. Toni spoke with The Artists Index co-founder, documentarian, and podcast host, Ron Fortier. They discussed her love of the arts, writing, heritage, and life. This episode was recorded at our recording studio at Spectrum Marketing Group at Howland Place in New Bedford. On Clash of the Correspondents it's a meeting between the Premier League's South Coast clubs as Bournemouth fan Neil Grover and Brighton fan Sam Murray join James for a chat on their clubs ahead of their GW4 encounter. Antoine Semenyo is already up to 7.4, should those who aren't there yet get on as soon as possible or might there be a bit opportunity from Bournemouth's opponents on Saturday? There's coverage on whether Georgino Rutter can lock down a starting spot and the wide players also look more secure for minutes than they have in the past. Key defensive assets are also covered, who might be on penalties, the integration of new additions and whether either club can make a sustained push for European qualification. Welcome back to this week's episode of the Veg Grower Podcast, where we share our journey of growing food here on the South Coast of the UK and inspire you to do the same—whatever your space! This Week in the Garden In this episode, I reflect on a much-needed day at the allotment. With ongoing home renovations weighing heavily, I took a full day to reset among the raised beds, buzzing bees (including one surprise wasp's nest!), and late summer crops. There's something about the allotment that clears the mind, and I really needed that mental escape this week. After a good tidy with the strimmer and lawn mower, I experimented with the chop-and-drop method—leaving weeds and trimmings on the soil surface to decompose and feed the beds in place. I also checked on our cabbages where the first earlies were previously growing, and they're settling in nicely. Our maincrop potatoes are beginning to yellow, a clear sign they're nearly ready for harvest. And yes, I did get stung (on the ear!)—a not-so-friendly reminder that we share our spaces with nature. Always tread carefully! Seed of the Month: Pak Choi August may seem like a quiet time for sowing, but it's actually perfect for leafy crops—and pak choi is our standout pick. Fast-growing, versatile, and brilliant in everything from stir-fries to Thai green curries, pak choi thrives in the cooler evenings of August without bolting. Here's how I sow it: Start in plug trays with seed compost, 1cm deep. Germinate in the propagation shed, then plant out in 2–3 weeks. Space at 20cm apart for full heads or closer for baby leaves. Consistent watering is essential to avoid bolting. Mulch well and protect with mesh to fend off flea beetle and butterflies. Within 6–8 weeks, you'll be harvesting full heads—or much sooner for baby leaves! Buy your seeds from our trusted suppliers Ruby f1 a red leaved pak choi White stem, one of my most regullery grown pak choi varities Qing choi an intersting but large variety Recipe of the Week: Cauliflower Pakoras Chef Scott is back with a tasty treat—crispy cauliflower pakoras (or use any mix of veg). They're packed with spice and easy to whip up. You'll need cauliflower, gram flour, mint, coriander, and a warming blend of cumin, garam masala, Kashmiri chilli powder and more. Simply whisk, mix and fry. Find the full recipe on our website or Chef Scott's Instagram @seedtotableplot13. Seeds You Can Still Sow in August Don't be fooled—August has plenty of sowing potential. Some crops to get in the ground now include: Leafy greens: spinach, rocket, mizuna, lettuce, corn salad Orientals: pak choi, mustard greens Overwintering onions & spring onions Turnips, radicchio, chard, kohl rabi Chillies (for overwintering) Green manures for soil health These will give you a harvest later this year or set you up nicely for winter and spring. Listener Comments Thank you for all the feedback on Spotify this week! We heard from: Henry who's been experimenting with compost and straw mulch. Becky, new to veg growing, is hoping for a patty pan squash recipe (Scott's on it!). Linda, with 25 years of chicken-keeping wisdom, recommends avoiding wooden coops. And Natalie, who raised a great question about washing recyclables. We'll dig into that one!
This episode includes includes mentions of sexual assault. Listen with care.New England Serial Killer Series | On the South Coast of Massachusetts sits New Bedford, a city shaped by the sea. Called the “whaling capital of the world,” New Bedford rose to prominence in the 19th century as a global hub for whale oil, fueling lamps and industry across continents. It inspired the Melville classic, Moby Dick. Its deep harbor and access to railways helped it eclipse Nantucket by the 1840s, transforming the city into one of the wealthiest in America. But beneath the grandeur of its maritime legacy lay a working-class community shaped by immigration, labor, and resilience—a backdrop that would later frame some of the region's darkest chapters. In 1983, New Bedford was thrust into the national spotlight when 21-year-old Cheryl Araujo was gang-raped inside Big Dan's Tavern. The attack, witnessed by onlookers who failed to intervene, ignited outrage and debate over victim-blaming, media ethics, and systemic misogyny. The televised trial and community backlash—especially within the city's Portuguese-American population—exposed deep cultural rifts and left her ostracized until her tragic death in a car accident three years later. Her story inspired the film The Accused and remains a painful reminder of how justice and empathy can falter.Just four years later, New Bedford faced another reckoning. Between 1988 and 1989, eleven women—many struggling with addiction and poverty—vanished or were found murdered along highways surrounding the city. The New Bedford Highway Murders, still unsolved, revealed a chilling pattern of vulnerability and neglect. Many suspects, no arrests. A serial killer goes free.Journalist Maureen Boyle, who covered the case from its earliest days, chronicled the victims' lives and the community's grief in her book Shallow Graves: The Hunt For The New Bedford Highway Serial Killer. Bruce Pollack Interview at 361Firm's Newport Conference - July 2025SUMMARY KEYWORDSNewport Conference, Bruce Pollack, business ventures, networking, entrepreneurs, investors, energy, real estate, high tech, AI, Jamaica development, affordable housing, limestone export, strategic partners, South Coast Associates.SPEAKERSBruce PollackBruce Pollack 00:00My name is Bruce Pollack. I'm the host at this event. I have lived in the Newport area for 20 years, and from the Boston area, I've had many different types of business ventures, starting from restaurants to cell phone technology to real estate, environmental products. So I've been involved in many different types of business, and you know, this was a great event today. Mark did a great job organizing the events and bringing together really a cohesive group of entrepreneurs and investors and interested parties, interested in many different types of investment, from energy to real estate to high tech to AI and so forth. So I found to be a very worthwhile and very positive experience. He's got a great network of people to draw from, and I look forward to working in the future to develop more contacts and networking. So I would say it was very positive events. It was a good use of In other words, a lot it takes. It takes a lot of work to cultivate relationships. So if in one meeting, if you can cultivate several, it's it's a good use of time. So I find it to be as a good use of time great. Some great relationships were made for foster and it was a good opportunity for some of my my fellow organizers that I work with, some some of the people on my team, to sort of meet more of the the audience that we're that we're dealing with, for them to get their name out there a little bit, and an opportunity to network as well. So So overall, I'm very pleased with it and look forward to more events. And it's a great it's a lot of work. I mean, I've, Mark's been here, I've seen the work. We've worked at it. And this was done, by the way, in very short time, because I wasn't supposed to be here. So basically, we did this in like four or five days. So thanks again. Good work. 361 team. And look forward to future endeavors, future networking events. And it's a great social event in terms, in addition to the business, it's a great, just great to talk to people that have similar, similar stories. You know, when you're when you're a visionary. Use that word bullet entrepreneur, because it says a different ring to it. But I find that, you know, you there, there. There aren't a lot of people that really understand that. So ups and downs you go through to get to get somewhere, to get something done, takes quite a bit, probably better sacrifice too, by the way. It's a lot, but, you know, I see, I see it just from this, from Mark's team as well. So we are working on a comprehensive development in Jamaica, a residential, comprehensive development Jamaica encompassing tourist and affordable housing projects as well as limestone export and use of limestone in the country. So we, we have strategic partners in the stone, and we have, we control many properties in Jamaica, and we're, this is, it's a five to seven year plan, which could yield in the vicinity of 5x or higher. 5x would be conservative. So my history is taking properties and getting into deals that people would say, you know, it's not it's not ready, or it's not real. I mean, so forth, so forth. But my belief is that when I see a VIG, when I see something that has the future, that has the potential, that's where I want to be. So LinkedIn or through our website. South Coast associates, SCA Jamaica, gmail.com, 857-222-8157, or LinkedIn. South Coast associates, Bruce Pollock, look forward to any contacts, and we'd be happy to provide any information or come down. Just come on down. Come on down. We'll take a tour. We'll take a ride. Easiest, that's the best way. My uncle told me years ago, you don't you don't talk about it. You You go there. You walk, you, you walk the streets. I grew up in the restaurant business, so um, bought and sold many restaurants in Boston, and you walk the ground, you actually see it for yourself. So thank you again. You. Welcome, Lara Lourenco Harrington, AKA Lara Harrington, a re-emerging artist and supporter of the arts in the South Coast. She is the daughter of immigrants from Terceira and Faial, "two of the most beautiful islands in the Azores." Her journey to connect more deeply with her heritage took a significant turn in 2011 when she became involved with the Azorean Whaleboats in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Lara's involvement opened doors that allowed her to immerse herself deeply in the culture, "particularly through participating in international regattas with Pico Island and Faial." Through these experiences, she has built amazing friendships and discovered incredible opportunities to share the Islands' beauty and charm from a local perspective. Her passion for the Açores (Azores in English) continues to grow as she brings the essence of these islands to those around her. "This journey of bridging a creative community between New Bedford and the Azores was inspired by my background in the arts and my commitment to cultural exchange." Lara Harrington received her Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts from the Massachusetts College of Art in 2000. After building and leaving a successful business in fitness, she is excited about her new adventure, Hotel Papel, which includes an art residency program! Lara spoke with The Artists Index's cofounder, documentarian, and podcast host, Ron Fortier, recently. She spoke about her passion, heritage, life, and developing journey as a working musician. The Tread Perilously Summer Grab Bag returns to Tequila and Bonetti for an episode called "Wonderdog." When the South Coast paper publishes a photo of Tequila as a heroic pooch, it gets the attention of a talent scout who wants to put him in a commercial. Captain Midian Knight uses it as a chance to be Tequila's agent and forces Visiting Detective Nico Bonetti to serve as the dog's handler. Meanwhile, Garcia and another detective take over Bonetti's current case: a string of robberies where Gold Badge security systems failed. But when the commercial turns out to be for Gold Badge, Bonetti gets suspicious. Erik and Justin face an episode of Tequila and Bonetti without a weird piano montage ... and they're not sure how to deal with it. They also lodge some complaints toward the film Reign of Fire. It leads to some Full Peril plans. Erik also offers a new opinion on Superman III ... and a few notes on the new Superman. The credit sequence gets dissected again even as the pair sense a level of retooling behind the scenes. Rick Overton ends up under the bus and Erik is convinced anyone can write a scene from Seinfeld. Clive Barker's version of The Babysitter Seduction is outlined and Dick Stensland makes a surprise appearance.
