This week on Artscape, producer James Baumgartner and editor Mareva Lindo highlight a few of their favorite festivals coming up this summer, from Providence Porchfest to New Bedford's Roots & Branches Festival.
Patrick Williams owns a stunning restaurant in London inspired by South African cooking. Growing up in Durban, down the South Coast he loved the sunshine and the beach life. At 17, with no clear direction, Patrick found inspiration in his older brother, a chef working in Cape Town. Moving to live and train with his brother was a significant life change but one filled with promise. Leaving the familiar shores of Durban for the bustling city of Cape Town was a cultural shift, but Patrick quickly acclimated and thrived. He spent 10 years working with esteemed chefs, where he progressed to junior sous chef. His culinary journey further led him to work with PJ Vadas, another signature restaurant on a South African wine farm. “ PJ was a bit of a mentor. My brother was a mentor and another good chef friend of mine who, now lives in Australia,” he told East Coast Radio. At 26, Patrick's mentors suggested he move overseas to deepen his culinary expertise, with the possibility of returning to head up his own restaurant. Embracing this advice, Patrick relocated to London, a move that would ignite his future successes. “So I moved over to London,” he shared. London brought Patrick new culinary experiences and personal milestones. Working with Robin Gill, a chef full of energy and creativity, significantly influenced Patrick's culinary approach. During this period, he also met his now-wife, Amy, a steadfast supporter through the demanding London culinary scene. With Amy's background in a restaurant family and a career in design, the couple decided to venture into their own culinary enterprise. The idea was born from their shared desire to infuse their heritage and creativity into a unique dining experience. The South African influence was a central theme, driven by Patrick's pride in his roots and the untapped potential he saw in introducing London to polished South African flavours. Determined to create a restaurant that stood out, they brainstormed for a name reflecting their vision. The Kudu, a stunning animal and a fitting logo, perfectly encapsulated their South African identity. Kudu's culinary offerings bear the distinctive mark of Durban's vibrant spice profile. With a team of South African chefs, the restaurant's dishes carry regional inspiration. Their newest venture, a dry spice rub monkfish dish, epitomises this blend of authenticity and innovation. “ There wasn't really anybody doing it on sort of more of a higher end. Not saying that we are a fine dining restaurant, but something that was a bit more polished and it really showcased what South African flavours could be,” he explained. For Patrick, these touches ensure that their cuisine resonates with familiarity for South African patrons while offering a fresh take on traditional flavours. Patrick's journey, from the sunny beaches of Durban to the dynamic food scene of London, displays the utmost resilience and passion. His advice for aspiring chefs is to dive in wholeheartedly, invest in continuous learning, and surround oneself with supportive, like-minded mentors. This relentless pursuit of improvement and community is what fuels Patrick's culinary success.
Australia’s peak motoring body, the Australian Automobile Association hascalled on the re-elected Albanese Government for more action on roadsafety. The call comes as new figures show the nation’s road toll continuesto climb. AAA Managing Director Michael Bradley said figures show roaddeaths are up by 18.1 per cent in the five years since AustralianGovernments set a target of halving national road deaths by 2030.Following my story on the recommendations of the N.S.W ParliamentaryCommittee inquiry into e-scooters and e-bikes I note the recent death of ane-scooter rider on the South Coast – the 41-year-old rider crashed onto theroadway and sadly was hit by a car. Over the last five years 30 people havelost their lives in e-scooter accidents – many of the children’s deathsattributed to their inexperience of riding e-scooters on busy roads. Welcome, John Irwin, a Tiverton, Rhode Island, artist. His studio is in The Handkerchief Factory, which is located in Warren, Rhode Island. Tiverton, by the way, is a part of the South Coast. John has been painting for almost 50 years. He is a Special Education teacher at East Providence High School and teaches art at his studio and several other venues. John Irwin paints landscapes and portraits in oil and acrylic. He enjoys painting from life but, increasingly, also from memory. For the last half a dozen years, he has been teaching art, and he says, "I think it has made me a much better artist." John Irwin emphasizes drawing and experimentation with his students. He is interested in depicting emotion and feelings in his private work. John spoke with The Artists Index's cofounder, documentarian, and podcast host, Ron Fortier, recently about his passion, his life, and his journey as an artist. This episode was recorded at our recording studio at Spectrum Marketing Group at Howland Place in New Bedford. I've just finished 2500km of driving from Brisbane, to the South Coast of NSW, to Melbourne, and then Victor Harbor to visit my grandparents. I forget how flat South Australia is - as soon as you go West of Ballarat it's just flat in every direction. It's really beautiful. This afternoon I traced the sunset from mid-afternoon and watched it the whole way down, stopping the camper van in a car park for the last 45 minutes or so to record this podcast.

Welcome, South Coast newcomer and the owner-operator of an already local institution, Fairhaven Frets, Bryon Knight. One of our newest friends, supporters, and collaborators. He began his musical career at age 11 and wanted to know more about how instruments were built. Bryon began “hanging around” a shop where a master fiddle maker was producing hand-made violins, violas, cellos, and a few guitars. He "swept the sawdust just to be near the old luthier and glean technical tidbits that would prove to be valuable later in my life." He also began playing in bands and eventually started touring regionally. Did we mention that Byron was from Arkansas and that he also had a 25-year career in television production, producing programs for ESPN, Fox Sports, The Discovery Channel, and The Outdoor Channel? He moved on to join the largest music retailer in the world, Thomann/Sweetwater Sound. After the devastating loss of a friend, he was encouraged by Little Rock Frets, which, according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, was the largest string instrument repair shop in the state. His wife, Frances, is a New England Native and wanted to return "Home," and so they did and came to Fairhaven, Massachusetts, where Fairhaven Frets came into existence in 2019. Byron Knight spoke with The Artists Index's cofounder, documentarian, and podcast host, Ron Fortier, this past April, about how he "always played music and worked on instruments - mostly for the pure love of the art". This episode was recorded at our recording studio at Spectrum Marketing Group at Howland Place in New Bedford. AROUND 6 A.M. on the morning of Sept. 9, 1942, Forest Service lookout Howard Gardner heard the sound of an approaching airplane. Peering out into the South Coast pre-dawn gloaming light, Gardner made out a small seaplane, heading toward him, flying low, circling. Showtime! This was what Gardner was here for, bundled up in the little Forest Service firewatch lookout shack atop Mt. Emily. Nine months into the Second World War, Gardner's duties had expanded a bit from what they had been a year before. Now he was looking not only for smoke from forest fires, but for enemy airplanes. And right then, that's exactly what he was looking at. (Brookings, Curry County; 1940s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/2402a-0907b.glovebox-bomb-031.634.html)

An Anglican priest on Ash Wednesday, a Benedictine nun on Lent, and a Lutheran minister on Bonhoeffer's last words. In this episode of Life & Faith, we go beyond the chocolates and hot cross buns to sit with the darkness of the Easter story that unfolds in three acts: dust, desert, and death. Our guests provide different snapshots of the Easter season, and the unexpected glimmers of life to be found in the time. From Anglican priest Chris Allan, from St Andrew's Cathedral in Sydney, we hear about the visceral experience of having the cross marked on your forehead in ash, and why Ash Wednesday is the ultimate reality check about who we are. Then, Sister Antonia Curtis, from Jamberoo Abbey on NSW's South Coast, allows us to briefly experience a Desert Day, a time set aside for reflection and contemplation observed by her and her community on Sundays throughout Lent.Lastly, we dwell on the last words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the pastor, theologian, and unlikely co-conspirator in the Hitler assassination plot. On the eve of his execution by the Nazis in 1945, Bonhoeffer said, “This is the end. But, for me, the beginning of life”. Rev Dr Mark Worthing, a Lutheran minister and Bonhoeffer scholar, explains how the Easter story decodes those words, and how death is transformed into life.Explore:Sr Antonia Curtis' online retreat offered through Jamberoo Abbey: “High Horses, Scapegoats, and Donkeys: A Lenten Odyssey”.The Adelaide Bonhoeffer Conference 2025, where Rev Dr Mark Worthing is giving a keynote address in late April.
