James E. Williams Jr. was born on May 28th, 1983in Victorville California, the son of an U.S.Air-Force veteran. James has lived in Valdosta, Georgia and Panama City Beach, Florida before moving to San Antonio, Texas in 1992. James graduated from Oliver Wendell Holmes High School in San Antonio, Texas in 2001. After graduation, James attended the University of Texas at San Antonio on a partial AFROTC scholarship. During his sophomore year at UTSA, James decided to pursue an interest inlaw enforcement and dedicated his studies towards earning a Criminal Justice degree. In December of 2005, James graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice, with an emphasis in juvenile corrections. Shortly after graduation, James began working atFather Flanagan’s Boys and GirlsTownin San Antonio, Texasas an Assistant Family Teacher. While employed there, James was instrumental in coordinating activities and lessons designed to teach life skills to at risk youth in the program. In 2007, Jamesbegan working for the Department of Family and Protective Services as an Investigator, assigned to investigate alleged and confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect in San Antonio, Texas.James joined the San Antonio Police Department in May of 2008, where he was assigned to patrol the lower west side of San Antonio. After 3 years on patrol, James was selected to work on the Problem Oriented Policing unit (P.O.P), a proactive unit where he was assigned to work in high volume crime areas of the city. In 2012, James was selected to be a member of the Mental Health Detail of the San Antonio Police Department. During his 8 years on the Mental Health Detail, James has had the opportunity to collaborate with various agencies and organizations in the city in an effort to assist those in severe crisis. James hasbeen instrumental in making the San Antonio Police Department’s Mental Health Detail one of the most nationally recognized police programs in the nation. While assigned to the Mental Health Detail, James has been awarded the lifesavingmedal andhas been acknowledgedas a member of the detail overall that received the Spirit of Health award. James has been featured in several documentaries highlighting his work on the Mental Health Detail, to include “The Right Response MHC.tv”, “NBC Left Field-A Different Kind of Force-Policing Mental Illness”, and the award-winning HBO documentary titled: “Ernie and Joe: Crisis Cops”.James is Married and has 1 child.
