A 66-year-old Texas man will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars after pleading no contest to murdering his ex-wife in a brutal attack, stabbing her 95 times after learning she planned to move out and had met someone new. On Monday, Bexar County Criminal District Judge Ron Rangel sentenced Martin Garcia to 45 years in a state correctional facility for the 2023 killing of 66-year-old Teresa Moreno Garcia, court records show. Garcia, who had already served 454 days in jail, reached a plea deal with the Bexar County District Attorney's Office, agreeing to a maximum sentence in exchange for a no-contest plea to one count of murder. During the sentencing hearing, Teresa Garcia's sons delivered emotional victim impact statements, describing their mother as a loving woman who endured years of domestic abuse at the hands of her ex-husband. “She did not know how to escape,” one of her sons said. The victim's other son recalled Martin Garcia's controlling nature, stating, “He would say things like, ‘If I can't have her, nobody can.'” He urged others to listen to victims of domestic violence, saying the family had known for decades that Garcia was abusive. Prosecutors revealed that although the couple had divorced years earlier, they continued to live together due to financial struggles. However, when Teresa Garcia told her ex-husband that she was moving out to be with someone new, he “violently attacked her.” On the night of December 5, 2023, at approximately 11 p.m., officers with the San Antonio Police Department responded to a 911 call from a residence on the 200 block of Channing Avenue. Martin Garcia himself had placed the call, confessing to the dispatcher that he had just killed his wife by stabbing her to death. When officers arrived, they found Teresa Garcia inside the home with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities also discovered Martin Garcia outside the residence, suffering from a self-inflicted wrist wound. He was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation before being taken into custody. According to the arrest report, Garcia told investigators he attacked his ex-wife after accusing her of cheating. The argument escalated when Teresa Garcia attempted to leave, prompting him to stab her repeatedly. Despite his horrific actions, Garcia expressed remorse in court. “I loved her very much,” he told the judge. “She was the only one I loved. I did what I did, I am very sorry, but I loved her.” An autopsy by the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Teresa Garcia's cause of death as multiple sharp force injuries, ruling it a homicide. On December 20th, 2009, Logan McQueary was supposed to gain physical custody of his nearly eight month old son, Gabriel. But when Logan arrived to pick him up, both he and Gabriel's mother, Elizabeth Johnson, weren't home. For days, Logan tried contacting Elizabeth, but she didn't respond. Then, on December 27th, Logan received a text message from Elizabeth claiming she had murdered Gabriel. Investigators immediately launched a search for both Gabriel and Elizabeth, but when they located Elizabeth days later, Gabriel was nowhere to be found. Elizabeth eventually told police that she didn't kill her son, but instead participated in an underground adoption in San Antonio, Texas. Investigators looked into Elizabeth's claims, but they were never able to confirm her story. It's been almost 15 years since Gabriel disappeared, and investigators are still searching for him. Nearly eight month old Gabriel Johnson was last seen on December 26th, 2009 at the Home Gate Studios and Suites in San Antonio, Texas. In the last known photo of Gabriel, he was wearing a white flannel pajama set decorated with reindeer, Santas, and Christmas trees, and a white knitted cap with light blue and green markings. Trish DeBerry is the biggest proponent of a security camera network in the center city. Deberry is CEO of Centro San Antonio, a public-private organization focused on downtown revitalization. The San Antonio Police Department plans to set up 10 AI-powered security cameras on a four-block stretch of Commerce Street downtown under a pilot program that could launch as early as January. The cameras will operate on artificial intelligence software and form an integrated network of eyes. DeBerry talks with ENside Politics this week about why she's been pushing for downtown cameras – and about the $950,000 she says the city wants Centro to cough up for the effort. She also muses on what new Missions ballpark will mean for downtown. Suggested reading: AI-powered cameras will be watching you on Commerce Street in 2025 Downtown may soon get AI surveillance. June 5, 1997. San Antonio, Texas. Police receive an anonymous phone call from a man who claims that 44-year old Monika Rizzo has been murdered by her husband, Leonard Rizzo, and that her remains can be found in her backyard. One month later, a new search of the Rizzos' backyard turn up over 200 bone fragments and it is eventually determined that they belong to Monika. While Leonard is suspected of having killed Monika, the authorities do not believe there is enough evidence to file murder charges and there are a number of unanswered questions about how she died. Today's episode begins at 20:27 and yes we chat a lot today, but I promise it is all relevant to the case and our own personal experience inside the classroom, because this is something we are passionate about. Teachers and staff members working with special education students in the Northside Independent School District expressed their distress over a series of violent incidents, highlighting the urgent need for improved staffing, training, and support. The plea for action came in the wake of a tragic event on February 17, 2024, when Alfred "Mr. Fred" Joseph Jimenez, a 73-year-old instructional assistant at Brandeis High School, sustained fatal injuries while attempting to intervene with a student. Jimenez's death was deemed a homicide and is under investigation by the San Antonio Police Department. In the early hours of a recent Monday morning in San Antonio, Texas, tragedy struck at a residential apartment complex. A 16-year-old young man lost his life in what is being reported as an attempted vehicle theft. The events leading to the fatal incident unfolded approximately at 2:20 a.m. at an apartment complex known as the Reserve San Antonio, based in the 13900 block of Babcock Road. The owner of the car, roused by the sound of shattering glass outside his apartment, decided to investigate the unusual noise - a decision that culminated in an unforeseen tragedy. It is not every day one is awakened by such a disturbance, and his instincts led him to examine the cause of the cacophony. Upon his exit from the apartment, the car owner was met with an unexpected sight: a young man, barely 16 years old, was reportedly ensconced inside his car. The owner's vehicle apparently became the target of an alleged theft attempt, with the teenager as the primary suspect. But the narrative quickly evolved from a potential theft into a far more serious situation. From the script of the events, the car's owner claims to have felt a significant threat at the sight of the young man inside his vehicle. He suspected that the teenager was armed, introducing a heightened level of danger to the scenario. A fear-filled standoff ensued, with the expectation of an armed confrontation appearing imminent. In a critical moment of heightened fear and perceived threat, the vehicle owner decided to protect himself from what he perceived as an imminent threat. The possibility of the young man being armed was too overpowering, and he felt cornered into taking drastic action. Summoning his courage, he fired at the teenager in his vehicle. The shot hit the intended target, and in this startling turn of events, the life of the 16-year-old was extinguished, right there on the spot. What began as an alleged theft escaladed catastrophically into a fatal incident, painting a grim image in the early hours at the Texas apartment complex. The teenage boy involved in the incident has since been identified as Adam Tino Arroyo, a 16-year-old resident. With his life brought to an abrupt end, the incident has stirred a mix of sympathy and concern among local residents and the wider San Antonio community. While the circumstances surrounding the event remain under investigation, the key question remains whether or not the adolescent boy was indeed armed at the time of his demise. This piece of information is vital in determining the culpability and potential charges faced by the shooter. For now, there is no definitive answer. The San Antonio Police Department has refrained from confirming this crucial detail – whether Arroyo had a firearm with him at the time of this alleged attempted theft. This unknown factor further complicates an already tragic circumstance. The investigation into Arroyo's death carries on under the careful navigation of the San Antonio authorities. Every rock is being overturned in an effort to find a satisfactory explanation about the exact unfolding of this fatal event. All the evidence is being painstakingly reviewed, with determinations yet to be made. As residents of the Reserve San Antonio come to terms with this unfortunate event, the question on everyone's minds revolves around self-defense rights and the complexity of stand-your-ground laws in the Texan region. With an emphasis often placed on an individual's right to protect his or her property, the issue is attracting debate. More broadly, this incident is contributing to discussions surrounding crime prevention strategies, particularly in regards to property crime. The scenario paints a picture that underscores the urgent need for effective tactics to prevent motor vehicle theft, and such incidents should inform the ongoing quest for improved solutions. Meanwhile, the incident has inevitably sparked community dialogue about youth involvement in criminal activities, and the urgent need for early interventions and strong support structures. If youth like Arroyo are scheming such attempts, it underlines an urgent call for community engagement, giving young people alternatives to criminality. Ultimately, the fatal event serves as a stark reminder of the dangerous dynamics at play when one's property and personal safety are threatened. While the necessity of the car owner's drastic action is under scrutiny, it echoes a ringing endorsement for every law-abiding citizen's right to defend their property. As the local community grapple with this tragedy, their collective hearts go out in their own way to young Adam Tino Arroyo – a life snuffed out too early. The outcome of the police investigation is eagerly awaited in hopes to bring some closure to an incident which has brought grief and raised important questions. August 4, 1990. San Antonio, Texas. While walking home from her friend's house, eleven-year old Heidi Seeman goes missing after an apparent abduction. Nineteen days later, another San Antonio girl, seven-year old Erica Botello, is abducted from outside her apartment complex. The bodies of each victim are soon found at separate locations one day apart on the same weekend, but investigators are inclined to believe the murders are not connected. Both cases feature a number of compelling suspects, including an individual who was actively involved in the original search effort for Heidi, but there is not enough evidence to conclusively link anyone to either of these crimes. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the unsolved murders of two separate girls which traumatized the city of San Antonio. If you have any information about the murder of Heidi Seeman, please contact the Texas Department of Public Safety's Missing Persons Hotline at 1-800-346-3243 or the Texas Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-TIPS (8477). If you have any information on the murder of Erica Botello, please contact the San Antonio Police Department at (210) 207-7273. In the wake of the tragic Uvalde school shooting in 2022, Texas communities are still reeling. The wounds of the past were freshened when news emerged of a potential subsequent threat. Nathan Cruz, a 17-year-old relative of the previous gunman, Salvador Ramos, was apprehended on charges of planning a similarly heinous act. The heartbreaking event from last year witnessed the loss of 21 innocent lives at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. Salvador Ramos, the perpetrator of the attack, had used an AR-15-style weapon to fatally injure 19 students and two dedicated educators on May 24, 2022. The community, and indeed the nation, mourned this senseless act of violence, remembering the victims with flowers, candles, and a memorial erected outside the school. Fast-forward to the present day, and the shadow of the tragedy still lingers. Recent reports indicate that Nathan Cruz, Ramos' own cousin, harbored intentions of mirroring his relative's atrocious crime. The evidence against Cruz, obtained by WOAI, includes a chilling confession to his sister, where he expressed the desire to "do the same thing" as Ramos. Concerned about her brother's intentions, she confided in their mother, who later overheard Cruz attempting to illegally acquire an AR-15, the same style of weapon used in the Uvalde massacre. In an era where vigilance is paramount, the quick action of Cruz's mother, who alerted the police about her son's alarming intentions, likely averted another catastrophe. Sgt. Washington Moscoso of the San Antonio Police Department expressed his relief to The New York Times, stating, “God knows what could have happened. Because she did the right thing, this individual has been arrested.” Adding to the community's unease is the revelation that Cruz resides directly opposite a San Antonio elementary school. KSAT brought to light the geographical proximity, deepening concerns over what might have been had his mother not intervened. In response to the emerging situation, Edgewood ISD released a statement highlighting its unwavering commitment to safety: "Edgewood ISD has been made aware a teenager is now in police custody accused of making a threat against a school on the city's west side. Edgewood ISD is dedicated to the safety and well-being of all students, faculty, and staff. Each campus benefits from an assigned Safety Officer. We encourage everyone to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activity. Our message remains clear: if you see something, say something." Court documents reveal that Nathan Cruz is facing a felony charge for threatening a public place with terroristic intent. Additionally, he is charged with a misdemeanor for threats made against a family member. The repercussions of the Uvalde tragedy emphasize the importance of community vigilance, open communication, and the need for preemptive action. It serves as a somber reminder that, while the act may end, the ripples continue to affect those connected to the perpetrator and the broader community. Efforts toward understanding, healing, and prevention are crucial in the wake of such events. For comprehensive coverage on this and related stories, visit the original article at Star-Telegram. Almost immediately upon the San Antonio Police taking to social media to try and get the word out about missing child Lina Sardar Khil, things got ugly. Completely fabricated details about what happened that supported bigoted theories, victim blaming, and unhinged conspiracy theories that had everyone from the founder of Eagles Flight Advocacy & Outreach to the assistant to United States Senator from Texas John Cornyn in on...something never fully fleshed out. But things got even scarier as Lina's father was accosted and almost assaulted, more than once, and as YouTube influencers and TikTokers faked volunteering for searches to create content and stalk those involved in the effort. The Sardar Khils came to San Antonio, Texas from the Khost Province of Afghanistan in 2019, after being granted a special visa by the United States. Thanks to a supportive and uplifting Afghan refugee community there, the family landed on their feet and their lives seemed to be heading in the right direction, a good direction. On December 20th, 2021, however, Riaz and Zarmeena Sardar Khil were met with a tragedy far worse than living in fear in their homeland, when their three-year-old daughter Lina vanished. Though they responded to this crisis fairly well, the San Antonio Police failed to find so much as a trace of the missing little girl. Part 1 of 2.If you have any information about the disappearance of Lina Sardar Khil, please call the San Antonio Police Department's Missing Persons Unit at (210)207-7660, Crime Stoppers of San Antonio at (210)224-7867, or the FBI's San Antonio field office at (210)225-6741Check out our friends' podcast Coffee and Cases, whose trailer you heard this episode, wherever you get your podcasts. Please donate to help get #JusticeForLeonLaureles at gofundme.com/f/leon-laureles-private-detective-and-memorial/Find gone cold – texas true crime on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram by using @gonecoldpodcast and on YouTube at: youtube.com/c/gonecoldpodcastThe New York Times, Texas Monthly's article “An Afghan Family Came to San Antonio Seeking a Safer Future. After working with US troops in Afghanistan for over five years, Lina Sardar Khil's father, Riaz Sardar Khil, was granted a special visa for him and his family to move to the US in hopes of creating a better and mainly safer life for them. In 2019, when Lina was just a baby, they settled in San Antonio, Texas. They returned to Afghanistan in 2021 to visit family and barely escaped with their lives. During their visit, they found themselves just feet away from a suicide bombing, Lina immediately fainted, and the family rushed to the airport to get back home to the US. But, just months later, on December 20, 2021, Lina disappeared from their apartment complex playground. Lina Sardar Khil was last seen at The Villas del Cabo Apartment Complex, now known as the Vive Apartments, on Fredericksburg Road in San Antonio, Texas, on the evening of December 20, 2021. She was wearing a red dress, black jacket, black shoes, gold earrings, gold-toned and blue plastic bracelets, and a Taweez around her neck. When she went missing, she was three years old; she would now be four, almost five. She has brown hair and brown eyes. Officer Doug Greene has been a member of the San Antonio Police Department for 12 years. In 2017, SAPD presented Officer Greene with the Officer of the Year Award. He has served as a Public Information Officer and is presently a Community Engagement Officer. Officer Greene thrives on building relationships between San Antonio area youth and law enforcement and also discusses the recent rash of SAPD suicides and unprecedented number of suicides nationwide. These are especially poignant because Officer Greene sees SAPD as family, brothers and sisters, and not only coworkers. As a Community Engagement Officer he plays a proactive role creating relationships with individuals and communities, because, as he discusses, communities have to come together and join with law enforcement to become the solution to community problems.
6ers, in business and in the military, vulnerability is often seen as a weakness. For leaders, it is seen as a liability because they are expected to be quick to act and perform at a higher level than others leaving time for emotions in the dust. But to be an effective leader, you need to be authentic which means you need to access your vulnerable, inner world. This week, Tony Nash is joined by Lisa Jaster, a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserve, a public speaker, an engineer, and an athlete. As the first female reserve officer to become a Ranger she is now a sought-after leadership speaker, owing to her incredible story of success after two attempts at finishing Ranger School. Lisa is a contributor and speaker at Talent War Group, a veteran-owned executive search, and talent consulting firm. She is passionate about fitness and sports, including CrossFit and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.You will learn that when you're a naturally pragmatic person, a trait that got you at the top of your game, sometimes you need to reach out and remind yourself that not everyone is like you. As a leader, you need that tactical pause to use the powerful tool of vulnerability to empower you and your team. As a result, you'll understand that any organization under empathetic leadership has team members that feel more connected to their work and to each other which creates an overall positive experience. The power of empathy not only builds meaningful connections it also motivates the team to come up with unique ideas thus becoming an asset. -----Resources mentioned: Killer Salt by Marietta Whittlesey -----01:07 - Lisa talks about the hero of her story and what she wants to achieve 03:55 - Why vulnerability is a hard topic for females in uniform 05:36 - Lisa's General George Patton phase and transition to aspiring for a President Lincoln leadership style 07:46 - How the book Team of Rivals influenced her leadership style 08:40 - The importance of diversity in thought 10:14 - The San Antonio Police Department as exemplars of balancing emotional intelligence and being able to be in warfighting mode 13:05 - Training yourself to fill different buckets 17:12 - A spectacular failure at West Point 18:21 - Being an empathetic leader 19:55 - How Lisa learns emotional intelligence as a natural risk-taker and pragmatic person21:55 - Reading and building on experiences she can't live as part of developing leadership -----Here is how to connect with Lisa Jaster:Delete The Adjective LinkedInFacebookInstagram
