Truly one of the most heinous and terrible albums we've ever listened to for an episode, we go wildly deep on this monstrosity that Bryan thought was funny in 1996 and realizes today that it's not funny now and it definitely wasn't funny then, either. A lazy album full of hack rhymes and jokes with even lazier production and musicianship, neither of us enjoy it, but it does lead to a classic "P.O.D. Kast Moment" as we reckon with our 90s selves and how this kind of stuff reflected the straight white guy culture of the time. Plus, we read some interviews with lead singer Jimmy Pop, who is easily in the top 3 most detestable characters we've ever had to learn about. It's a fun one! We've got plenty more fun ones over on our Patreon, where $4/month gets you access to THREE bonuses every damn month at patreon.com/thepodkast. Last month, our pal Will Weldon joined us to discuss the Black Sabbath tribute album "Nativity in Black II", and it was a lot of fun, as it was surprisingly good and had one of the worst songs we've ever covered on it, so it's perfect for our show. You also get immediate access to our entire back catalogue of over 150 bonus episodes, access to our Discord, and more, so help support the show and enjoy some bonus content now!
As some of you have probably guessed, many weeks I struggle to come up with original content for this program. The syndication service behind the show recently told me that telling the story about the time I was asked to leave the Bloodhound Gang's green room would not be sufficient basis for a two hour podcast. Instead, it was suggested that I take a tip from some of my alleged “peers” in the world of online radio and invite a luminary or two to contribute what's known in the industry as a “guest mix”. The trouble is, I was also informed these guest contributors are only likely to boost listenership if they exceedingly attractive. The way it was explained to me was “threes and fours don't want to listen to fives and sixes, they're only interested in nines and tens.” Frankly, this is too much arithmetic for me. As far as I'm concerned, you're all number ones. So we're back to that story about the Bloodhoung Gang's green room. Plus two hours of music, give or take.
We've covered some absolute guff from the 90s on Broken Records, Steve and Remfry's collective favourite period of time for music but it's always led to some compelling, nostalgia-filled conversations and this week's 90s entry is no exception. Stop, collaborate and listen cause Vanilla Ice's on the mic and he's jizzin out 13 truth bombs that are going to be Hard To Swallow. Released by Republic Records in 1998, Hard to Swallow is the third studio album by American rapper Vanilla Ice. It proved to be a shallow attempt to move away from hip hop and discard his former pop image. Instead, Hard to Swallow featured what he described as "skate rock", a fusion of heavy metal, punk rock and hip hop. The album features appearances from Amen vocalist Casey Chaos, Bloodhound Gang vocalist Jimmy Pop, and Insane Poetry front man Cyco. Session musicians included drummer Shannon Larkin, keyboardist Scott Borland, and Snot guitarist Sonny Mayo. Oh and it's produced by Ross Robinson, the nu-metal superstar producer who said that working on this album was “the most punk-rock thing you could do." But was it? Or was it simply a sticky, premature gag of an album?
Dave and I discuss a 25 year old album that still acts like it's thirteen. The Bloodhound Gang's second album One Fierce Beer Coaster is offensive, crass, and pretty damn funny. We discuss the album track by track until Dave gets very distracted by Vanilla Ice. News! News?! Well, sort of. Jonny G (no relation to Kenny G[?]) and Jimmy Pop chat about Lucas Giolito's comments on his White Sox cohorts who are currently missing from action (i.e. Moncada, Kopech, Cuthbert), plus ANDREW VAUGHN AT 3B ALERT (2:15). James then dives into his story of Reynaldo Lopez, who he, himself, believes has gained command over his previously inconsistent mental approach to baseball (8:45). What about White Sox's schedule jumped out to Jon and James (13:15), and The Field of Dreams game pits Chicago against St. Louis, but is traveling a dream for sports media members during the pandemic (18:25)? Is there any value to going to away games? You can pay the Sox to plant a cutout of yourself, a friend, a family member, whomever, in The Rate's stands. The guys envision which Chicago media members/former players would make for the best cutouts (25:15).Follow James on Twitter: @JRFeganFollow Jon on Twitter: @jon_greenberg Save 40% off your first-year subscription to The Athletic by visiting: theathletic.com/southside Learn more about your ad choices. Kasting Cuzzins: A Podcast About Rap... By Two Recovering White Rappers
In this episode, the Cuzzins explore their fourth and most filthy rap track yet. The first verse kicks off with necrophilia and never looks back. Listen as they parse every gruesome lyric and pick apart a beat that's, by all accounts, quite hot. Other artists referenced include the Lonely Island, 3OH!3, Cage, Jimmy Pop, Aesop Rock, Michael Christmas and OG Swaggerdick.

Hello my name is Jimmy Pop and I'm a dumb white guy
This week guest Travis Duscay finally admits musical fallibility as we return to one of his adolescent favorites, The Bloodhound Gang, and their hackneyed, overbearingly ironic "Fire Water Burn." Does repeating a punchline twice make it three times as funny? As an aging actor, would you risk what might be your final performance on being the butt of Jimmy Pop's sight gags? If you admit to being white frequently enough, do you become a good rapper? Colby Ferrin has an answer for that. Music We Like: Death Grips - Bottomless Pit, Troller
