DJ Mel Z hosts a special live appearance at KVCU Radio 1190's Carlson studios with Jacob T. Simons in advance of his performance with Palamara at eTown Hall! Jacob T. Simons is a songwriter with a gift for fearlessness. He is not afraid to make himself vulnerable as he reaches into his soul and puts to the page whatever he might find there: beauty, ugliness, truth, untruth. Whether drawing on folk, blues or experimental music, his understated guitar work and plainspoken candor strip the compositions down to their raw essentials and leave nothing hidden. He is the former leader and impresario of the Michigan-based collective Moon Orchids, with whom he released a pair of acclaimed records prior to their dissolution in 2025.
French house duo ODEN & FATZO deliver a fun 60 min live set of pure feel good house. If you have ever seen these guys play, then you know they bring the party with live mixes of their own tracks. Their set up is all-hardware featuring analog drum machines (Roland TR-8s, TR-909s), synthesizers, and compact grooveboxes, allowing them to jam, improvise, and build tracks on the fly rather than just pressing play. This mix embodies that. The lads recently dropped "My Temptations", a primer to a forthcoming album (and including in the link above). With so many IDs in this mix, you might have a sneak peak on whats coming from the guys.

Donald Trump has reached a “settlement” with his Justice Department in a $10 billion lawsuit he brought against the IRS. Under it, DOJ will create a new $1.8 billion fund, controlled by Trump, that will dole out payments to allies who have supposedly been victimized by government “weaponization.” This could include the January 6 rioters. This has shocked legal observers, who called it everything from “horrible” to a “slush fund,” with others describing it as corruption that might be historically unprecedented. What happened here? Is there any recourse? Do Republicans really want to defend this, given that Trump's economic numbers just cratered again in a brutal New York Times poll? We talked to legal expert Harry Litman, who writes for The New Republic and hosts the Talking Feds podcast. He explains why this is likely illegal but almost impossible to stop; why it's so damaging to our system more broadly; and how Democrats can ensure that the GOP pays a major price for it this fall. Duncan Garner takes aim at the growing fight over Santana Minerals' proposed gold mine in Central Otago, after Ngāi Tahu opposed the project following reports of a $180 million figure being discussed. Duncan argues this is no ordinary consent battle. He says it goes to the heart of whether New Zealand is still a place where major projects can get built, investors can have certainty, and high paying regional jobs can actually exist. ACT MP and undersecretary Simon Court joins the show to discuss the Santana mine, the RMA changes coming through Parliament, and whether the Government's reforms will stop what he calls “shakedowns” in the planning system. Duncan also shares the story of a local business owner giving up on New Zealand and heading to Australia to try his luck in the mines. Is this about protecting the environment, or has the system tipped too far? And if New Zealand keeps making it this hard to build, who will be left to pay the bills? Learn more about your ad choices. Warmup Set for Armin van Buuren, Big Night Live, Boston | March 20, 2026 Exactly one month to date. Opening for Armin van Buuren at Big Night Live was more than a warm-up set; it was a journey. With only four hours of club time in Boston, reading the room, feeling the energy, and guiding the audience where they want to go are essential to building the night properly. From deep progressive to peak-time melodic techno and trance, and a few classics, Boston, you were ready for all of it. This set weaves together melodic, progressive, underground techno, and timeless trance, featuring music and remixes from John Digweed, Nick Warren, Paul Thomas, Above & Beyond, Layton Giordani, Adam Beyer, Aly & Fila, and Bryan Kearney. Highlights include Gridlock, Athena, Enjoy the Silence, Flight 643 (Hel:sløwed Remix), Your Mind, Somebody Loves You, and to close out the night, On A Good Day. There are defining moments in this mix that shape the story: the tension of Zen Garden, the darkness of At Night, the unexpected remix of Smack My Bitch Up as some chanted (TAKE MY PICTURE), the classic mashup of The Perspective Space by Markus Schulz, and my own Call My Name with Hiwater and Olya Gram woven into the mix. This set was about respecting the warm-up, building atmosphere, tension, and setting the stage the right way before Armin took over. 1. John Digweed - Gridlock (Digweed & Muir's Stereo Club Mix) 2. Trilucid - Athena (Nick Warren & Nicolas Rada Remix) 3. John Creamer, Stephane K - I Wish You Were Here (Paul Thomas Extended Remix) 4. Shamika, Solune - Zen Garden (Michael A Remix) 5. Suzi Quatro has been rocking out live for 7 decades. Since she was a teenager with her sisters in The Pleasure Seekers in the mid-60's she has been on stage, singing, playing her bass and proving that she rocks hard, no matter what box you may try to put her in. Suzi's new album Freedom is available for purchase and download and it's a rocker from start to finish. The title track is the lead single and she discusses how she and her son wrote that one and how she immediately knew it was a new anthem for her. They bring back that old Detroit raunchy-rock riffing with Suzi's unique voice on songs like Here's Ya Boots, Nobody Held My Hand and Shakedown and she even teams up with fellow Detroiter Alice Cooper on the MC5 classic Kick Out The Jams (and yes, Suzi says the expletive after Kick Out The Jams). Hear not only about how she made this record, one of her best in years, but about her long career, about moving to England in 1971 alone, touring the world, making fun of nerdy interviewers, being a mom and being her unstoppable, determined self. Of course we ask a Happy Days question but are so glad she didn't keep reprising Leather Tuscadero so we could get more of the real Suzi Quatro over the last 50 years. In honor of that time I went on an Easter Egg Hunt as a toddler in 1984 and had no luck, I'm giving everyone this Easter egg of an episode a day early. Hope you and yours have a safe, happy, healthy, and lovely weekend full of good movies and great memories. This week, I'm honored to bring back one of my oldest Film Twitter buddies, the great Brian Saur, who I've known and collaborated with on various projects for over sixteen years, from the blog Rupert Pupkin Speaks to DVD Netflix to pods. Gifting us with an inventive trio of forgotten film noir titles he discovered on his incredible Pure Cinema and Just the Discs podcasts, in this entertaining discussion, we cover THE POWER OF THE WHISTLER (1945), ROAD HOUSE (1948), and SHAKEDOWN (1950), and other unsung B-movie goodies you'll treasure as a cinephile.Bio: Brian Saur is the co-host of the Pure Cinema Podcast, a long-running film podcast he hosts alongside Elric Kane. As the official podcast of the New Beverly Cinema, the show has spent the past nine years exploring cult and classic films, with a particular emphasis on uncovering hidden, off-the-beaten-path gems. Over the years, it has featured high-profile guests such as Quentin Tarantino, Sean Baker, Rian Johnson, Edgar Wright, Patton Oswalt, Larry Karaszewski, and Dan Waters. At its core, the podcast aims to recreate the experience of walking into a video store and getting personalized movie recommendations from the knowledgeable staff behind the counter. Listen to Pure Cinema anywhere you get podcasts.Originally Posted on Patreon (4/4/26) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/154778751Shop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless ShopDonate to the Pod via Ko-fi & PayPalTheme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive

Today we head back to February 1982 and the Pauley Pavilion at UCLA for a fine‑sounding tape of a very tasty Grateful Dead set. They come out of the gate with a wonderful Shakedown; Brent and Phil are all over this one, and it makes for a perfect opener. A gritty New Minglewood Blues follows, with Bobby leaning into the slide work here and again later on Little Red Rooster. Jerry is in strong voice on Friend of the Devil and a spacious Bird Song, and the set wraps up in unusual fashion with Bertha sliding straight into Man Smart (Woman Smarter) as a first‑set closer. Grateful Dead Pauley Pavilion – University of California Los Angeles, CA – 2/21/1982 – Sunday One Shakedown Street > New Minglewood Blues Friend Of The Devil Me And My Uncle > Big River Bird Song Little Red Rooster Bertha > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod022026.mp3

Sean Kearns isn't just part of snowboard history, he helped build it. From the Whiskey films that defined an era, to shaping the culture behind the scenes as a filmmaker, producer, and entrepreneur, Sean Kearns has been quietly steering snowboarding's direction for decades. His film legacy runs deep: Whiskey 1-4, 20/20, Technical Difficulties, to the Forum movies; The Resistance, True Life, Nixon Jib Fest, Shakedown, Chulksmack, That, etc. Skateboarder. Snowboarder. Filmmaker. If you rode in the 90s, wore out VHS tapes or care about how this culture actually came together this conversation hits deep. And yes, there were some serious leasons learnt along the way. This one's special. Thank you Sean. Our Kind of Chaos is an unreleased documentary you'll want to keep your eyes peeled for, it's currently making the rounds at film festivals. An incredible, raw and very eye-opening film. Huge respect to Clay Larson, Ryan Stutt and the entire team for bringing this one to life. Enjoy the show.
