"'Too Bad, So Sad, Maybe Next Birth' was a phrase my parents would say whenever something was out of my control and didn't go exactly according to plan," Shyama Golden wrote on the subject of her new solo show of the same name for PM/AM in London. "It feels to me like a short phrase that embodies the entire human struggle, like Sisyphus pushing the boulder up the hill." The Los Angeles-based painter has created a universe where reincarnation, generational trauma and suffering (and a sense of humor to cope with it), Sri Lankan folktales and a personal journey through time and the soul's journey through eras. Golden told me she wanted to create a works that spoke of "past lives because this framework challenges the idea of an essential self, a fixed history, and linear progress." And so she is creating her own story, not the next birth, but this birth. In this conversation from The Unibrow's Radio Juxtapoz podcast, I spoke with Shyama in LA just before her trip to London, just after her husband, Paul Trillo, showed me an incredible AI-generated film he created with her that will premiere in short form at the PM/AM show but will continue to be worked as a longer work in the future. The show is like a journey through our collective creative output: traditional painting, wood masks co-created with craftsmen in Sri Lanka that harken to centuries past as well as a short film utilizing AI. It's work for the ages, literally. The Unibrow's Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 164 was recorded in Los Angeles on May 2, 2025. The first thing I said to Nellie Scott, Executive Director of the Corita Art Center in downtown Los Angeles that preserves and promotes Corita Kent's art, teaching, and passion for social justice, was that I wish we didn't need to do this. I wish Corita Kent's work had already done its work, that the world was free of oppression, racism, inequality, chaos and fear. Maybe Nellie and I could just talk about love and a butterfly, the upcoming showing of Kent's work at Andrew Kreps and kaufmann repetto in NYC this month. But the times they are a'changing and oh how they stay the same. The new Corita Art Center opened in March and since, Pope Francis has passed, the structure of democracy in America has been bent to a near breaking point and art has an act of protest and social awareness is struggling to find its footing. So, it's time for Corita Kent once again. In this conversation on the Radio Juxtapoz podcast produced by the Unibrow, Nellie Scott speaks of the founding of the Center in 1997 and its association with the Immaculate Heart Community, how Corita Kent went from entering the religious order Immaculate Heart of Mary at age 18, to championing civil rights, anti-war activism, and peace, through her unique aesthetic of printmaking. She left the order in 1968 and moved to Boston, where she continued to make work. Her art, and her life, was devoted to finding a deep understanding of the human experience, through teaching and creating. Corita left behind a great legacy that continues to reverberate - at the time of her death in 1986, Corita had created almost 800 serigraph editions and thousands of watercolours, alongside public and private commissions. From Boston to Los Angeles, Corita's life is a truly inspired story. The Unibrow's Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 163 was recorded at the Corita Art Center in Los Angeles in late April 2025. Original music by Aesop Rock for Radio Juxtapoz

Today we go over the lyrics from the song "That is not a Wizard" by Aesop Rock. We somehow lost Diego's mic at the end, but he had some great insight from the lyrics. The song addresses the world in 2021 from the eye's of an American hip-hop artist in New York, but as always, he delivers prime, obtuse breakdowns of the strangeness we all encountered. Enjoy and Be Healthy Yall!

In 1995, a fervent and wry rapper (Sean Daley, aka Slug) and a dexterous deejay (Anthony Davis; Ant for short) helped co-found a platform to help put Midwest -- and more precisely, Minnesotan -- hip-hop on the map. Three decades later, Rhymesayers Entertainment is one of the most popular and influential modern rap labels in existence, releasing seminal LP's by MF Doom, Freeway, Aesop Rock, Brother Ali, and Atmosphere: Slug and Ant's infectious repartee that helped define the Rhymesayers aesthetic from the jump: While Daley puts the listener in a metaphorical chokehold -- thanks to a volatile delivery of vulnerable self-reflection -- Davis' textured musical milieu allows plenty of room for revelry within a hybrid of soul, gospel and rap's golden age. On this week's episode, the pair ponder how record shopping has actively made their lives better, why racially integrated album covers usually lead to great music, and when their first-ever appearance on vinyl became a time capsule of their first-ever collaboration. Atmosphere will commemorate the 20th anniversary of their landmark release You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having by kicking off their aptly-titled Imagine The Fun tour in January. Tickets, social media and pre-orders for Ant's third volume of his Collection of Sounds series (dropping next month) are all available at atmospheresucks.com.

'Simian Transmission' delves into themes of mental chaos and societal disconnection. It portrays a sense of frantic expression and inner turmoil, with imagery of static and fragmented signals reflecting a struggle to find clarity. The repeated emphasis on 'failure' highlights feelings of defeat and hopelessness. The title suggests a primal form of communication that has been disrupted, symbolizing a loss of connection and isolation. IIS talk show is here for you! We come right out the gate with the classic Cleveland tourism video from 14 years ago. Jon Stewart is back on the Daily Show part time and people love it! Do you? Biden is comatose so he was unable to do a softball interview on Super Bowl Sunday which isn't really news. Toby Keith is dead. That's your celebrity death report for this week. Bill Pullman is hot this week! He makes his second podcast appearance of late playing the dumbest saxophone you will ever hear in David Lynch's film Lost Highway. We got your emails! Eric checks in baffled as ever by the popularity of KISS. Welcome to hell. Are you familiar with the film known as American Carol? From the people who brought you Airplane and the Naked Gun, comes this terrible Bush-era propaganda piece. All time trash that must be seen to be believed. Anybody out there ever been busted by a cop who taps on your car door in the middle of nowhere after dark? We might have a few stories to share. Mr. Pink is feeling good about himself because the news continues to reinforce his ability not to be duped. No bible is going to stop him either. Finn Gurrer continues the saga of his work relationships and the lack of security that continues to plague his operation. Security protocols are in place. Dave writes us one more time about Aesop Rock. Cue Steve getting pissed! The atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza has Dave down in the dumps about humanity. Then Steve goes on a rant about the blatant disrespect of public billboards. It turns out many Americans don't know that they have leverage on the whole when it comes to their wages. Steve watched True Detective season 1 with his brother recently. They found Woody Harrelson doing some serious jaw-based acting in that season. Govier then wonders why it seems that Naomi Watts has cotton balls in her mouth in many of her films. We love you all! This talk show is not the same without you listening and emailing us your highly entertaining thoughts. We close the show with Tiny Raindrop by Balance And Composure. We're back on track! Thanks for sticking with us. Govier is blown away that OJ Simpson is frequently featured on Come And Talk 2 Me which is a sports show hosted by Cam'ron & Ma$e in suits. Bizarro. Dan Campbell is blowing the minds of the locals here in metro Detroit. Have you heard the rumors about black male actors being coerced into dressing in drag? It's not just a one-off. The Katt Williams interview with Shannon Sharpe offers up this juicy tale plus the derision of Joe Rogan's army of unfunny comedians. Who's funnier: Joe Rogan or Bill Maher? Luke watched Killers of the Flower Moon, but Steve hasn't yet so we offer nothing to you about that film. David Caruso become iconically funny while attempting to do drama on CBS. Is Jim Carrey impersonating Caruso less, the same or more funny? We got your emails! Mr. Pink chimes in about our unintended hiatus. Sid wants to know if Luke thinks voting for Biden in Wisconsin purely for the Supreme Court cause is reason enough. Govier asks Steve for a throwback about the frequent anthrax attacks from 2002 related to diaper shits. We do the BBC proud! Joe checks in with an email about his clarification about Aesop Rock. Joe enlightens us about producer Blockhead. Govier wants to know if he has collaborated with Buckethead yet. Luke listened to over Aesop Rock songs to report to you all on the matter. Finn Gurrer has a crisis related to Sbarro credit cards, the Social Security Administration and TGI Friday's gift card. It's a doozy! Mr. Pink writes in briefly to thank the fellas for the show existing. Thank you Mr. Pink! Can Yao Ming be the lead villain in a new Rocky movie? We love you all! Sifuentes is currently Professor of performance at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The 1990s saw hip-hop's influence extend well beyond the confines of the traditional large metropolitan areas (New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, et al.), initially spreading into the suburbs, where it infiltrated every socio-economic strata and crossed every cultural boundary, then ultimately found its way into smaller regional niches, such as, in the case of the progressive rap combo Oddjobs, Minneapolis and St. Paul. With the equally forward-looking artists of the Rhymesayers Entertainment enterprise, the group not only helped to put Minnesota on the hip-hop map but, inspired by previous mavericks like De La Soul, the Beastie Boys, Hieroglyphics, and Freestyle Fellowship, also helped to tie rap's coastal-based, old-school past with its visionary, postmodern, untethered future. The individuals who would eventually form the official Oddjobs lineup originally came together in 1996 as members of the 30-odd-strong Cases of Mistaken Identity (CMI) collective, a rotating cadre of rappers, DJs, b-boys, and graffiti writers drawn mostly from a pair of local high schools. By 1998, Minneapolis MCs Advizer (Adam Waytz) and Crescent Moon (Alexei Casselle), and St. Paul producers/DJs Anatomy (Stephen Lewis) and Deetalx (Devon Callahan), had gravitated toward one another and began performing together at all-ages venues as Oddjobs, occasionally backed live by local band Heiruspecs. Not long thereafter, the group released its first tape, Case Studies, with CMI and began to earn a measure of local exposure. The foursome's entrée into more widespread underground circles came the next year with its debut indie full-length, Conflict and Compromise. They attracted even more notice within the hip-hop community after Crescent Moon's strong showing at the battle competition of the 1999 Scribble Jam, and via his frequent spot as an auxiliary MC for Eyedea + Abilities of Rhymesayers fame. Advizer and Deetalx made the move to Brooklyn in the fall of that year to attend college, but the members kept Oddjobs alive via tapes, telephone calls, and commutes, resulting in the 2000 EP Absorbing Playtime. At around the same time, the Funboy EP was pressed in a limited edition of 5000 and officially released only in Japan. (It quickly began making the rounds in the United States as a bootleg.) Across the Tracks, a Deetalx mix CD, and Live at the Bryant Lake Bowl, with Chicago's Typical Cats and Heiruspecs, both appeared in 2001.The full CMI crew -- by that time down to Oddjobs and MCs Nomi and Naimles -- had planned to follow with a full-length project. Instead Nomi (Mario Demira) joined as an official member (CMI Productions became the business front for the group), and the three remaining Minnesotans made the final move to New York the following autumn. Success and respect came surprisingly quickly for the quintet in the Big Apple. Its 12" single "Blue Collar Holler" rose to the sixth spot on the CMJ college radio chart. (A subsequent remix of the song attracted guest appearances from Aesop Rock and Vast of Cannibal Ox.) Oddjobs shared stages with or opened for De La Soul, DJ Shadow, Blackalicious, El-P, and Atmosphere, among others. In 2002 the crew released its first nationally distributed full-length, Drums, on its own indie startup label Third Earth Music. The album was lauded by fans, fellow rappers, and critics alike. They briefly partnered with Eyedea for the extremely rare toss-off cassette Whereabouts of Hidden Bridges. The collaboration also accounted for a track on the next official Oddjobs recording, the six-song The Shopkeeper's Wife EP, released in the spring of 2003. ~ Stanton Swihart

WE'RE STILL HERE! A thousand apologies for being absent for 6 weeks. It's definitely Govier's fault. The good news is did not pod fade. Our overdue return includes an awesome special guest. You may know him from his occasional emails to this very talk show. It's the sexy man himself: Sean! Govier apologizes for our disappearing act. Sean has a surreal moment. Mike has a lot of experience with laundry, including making a mess in Luke's suit pants. Sean reminisces about the old days when him and Govier lived in Colorado together playing racquetball. This show includes THE ultimate Luke hates Radiohead story. Steve joins in at the 10 minute mark after completing his Cinema 9 podcast appearance. Govier started a tackle football league during his senior year of high school and everybody on this episode played in that league which featured representation from multiple areas across metro Detroit. We have your emails! Finn Gerr is back and is claiming he was hacked by his cousin. Mr. Pink wrote an email which is a follow-up from our last episode about the Israeli brutality towards the Palestinians. Did Jimmy Carter get a raw deal? Luke says no. Steve's William Faulkner impression will have you in stitches! Dave writes the show with passion as he is dedicating his life to raising awareness about the wonderful magic that is Aesop Rock. Steve is not having this. How about those New Year's resolutions?! The emailers want to know. Govier did something at his last job that he has never done before in his entire life. Govier also made a huge mistake at a Big Boy back in 2001. Sid sent in an email feeling uneasy about the possibility that fantasy sports dollars could be going to alt-right causes. Sid also has questions for Luke about Cornel West and movies we've seen lately. Did you know that Malta has become the Delaware of the sea? Sid also has some great tidbits about the state of Wisconsin and Petey (Paul) Ryan. Nancy Reagan apparently made a very specific noise when she gave head, but she didn't do drugs while doing so. Each of the fellas shares a streaming movie or TV show they've seen recently and whether or not the creation sucked or not. Finally, Govier laiughs himself into a stupor with a legendary whiskey laugh meltdown that will at a minimum make you smile. We love you all! This talk show is not the same without you listening and emailing us your highly entertaining thoughts. We close the show with Only Entertainment by Bad Religion. It's episode 70 of the DOD45 show and our special guest for this episode is Carnage the Executioner. A rapper, emcee, beatboxer, music-maker, teacher, you name it. He hails from the Twin Cities and we're glad to have him on the show. Carnage is a Transformers, the cartoon, fan, so on this episode ArtByTai draws him a Transformers themed piece with a dash of Tom & Jerry, the Flintstones and a tiger. In the intro of this episode, Adrienne & Tai recap their experience at the Atmosphere Red Rocks show thanks to the invite from Mr. Dibbs. And with Carnage, some names to come up are Terrell Owens, Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, & Tiger Woods, which also leads to a conversation about how the father figures of The Jacksons, The Williams Sisters & Tiger Woods, shaped the professionals they became & whether that was a good thing or a bad thing. Carnage also reveals that he is in the process of branching out from The Executioner moniker and is moving into the era of Terrell-X. He also discusses that he's interested in expanding his talents with things like learning how to scratch and even play the guitar. Mr. Dibbs appears on episode to present a question to Carnage from a random old lady off the streets of Cincinnati for the much-anticipated return of the Question from Dibbs segment. They also have a good discussion about one of Tai's favorites, comedian and beatboxer billed as The Man of 10,000 Sound Effects, Michael Winslow and they also discuss Carnage's experience working with Aesop Rock on the track “Tuff” from Aesop's The Impossible Kid album. All of that and some revelations during The Dish segment, make this a very satisfying episode. So peel the clumps of hair from your shower drain, scrape the the mold off the curtain, spray off your dogs bodaggets & get yourself situated to enjoy this episode 70 of The DOD45 Show with Carnage the Executioner.
