Welcome back to the Rock ‘n Roll Ghost Podcast. On this week's episode, the Ghost speaks with musician Shannon Larkin, drummer for the hard rock band Godsmack. Larkin discusses the band's upcoming Vibez Tour, which is making a stop at the Hard Rock Casino in Gary, IN (in addition to many other venues) and how this tour is different from the band's last coast-to-coast trek through America. The band will be performing acoustically and lead singer Sully Erna will tell some stories about the band and the songs played. Things take a bit of a political turn as Larkin and the Ghost discuss situations going on in the country. And, despite disagreeing on some issues, they prove that people can respectfully disagree on these issues. Days after his birthday, Sully Erna from Godsmack called in to discuss what the band has going on, along with his "I Stand Alone - The Sully Erna Story", which you can watch now.  He told me how the documentary started, after writing manuscripts for his book "The Paths We Choose". He says his story is about perseverance....that's an understatement. "So many times I could've easily ended up dead or in jail." He told me how music really saved his life. He said he was nervous watching it, but he thinks it came out good. I watched it in one sitting. There was stuff in there that surprised me, and some stories that were, as he said, hard to believe. He's a guy who literally had to fight to achieve his success. "There really is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, it's just a mother f&#$#er getting there." People may or may not know, Godsmack was a late-blooming band. Most rock bands get their start in their 20s. Godsmack started to break in their 30s. That's unheard of in our business. He said after years of trying to make it as a musician for so long, he put the band together to just scratch an itch.  He also talked about how drummer Shannon Larkin joined the band. He said they didn't even do auditions for drummers when he came aboard. Suly went on to explain how he joined the band and how the "drum battle" started. That's a highlight of any Godsmack show.  As far as what the band has going on this year, he said they probably won't be working on any new music, but touring with an intimate night of music and storytelling.  You can watch the documentary on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and other streaming services.

The band Ugly Kid Joe has not been on the road in America in 27 years. That's hard to believe for a band that reunited in 2012 and has continued to tour in Europe that entire time. With the release of the straight-ahead rock and roll album Rad Wings of Destiny that has changed. Ugly Kid Joe achieved chart-topping success in the early 90s with the songs "Everything About You" and "Cats in the Cradle." Ugly Kid Joe were cool with the rock fans, the punk kids, the skateboarders, and the metal fans yet they fizzled out by the end of the decade. Well, they're back! All it took was guitarist Dave Fortman to produce a Godsmack record whose drummer Shannon Larkin was the drummer for Ugly Kid Joe. Singer Whitfield Crane and Mr. Fortman explain all on this week's Cutter's Rockcast.

They delve into the trajectory of Shannon's career, the music of Godsmack, and the decision to stop making studio albums after nearly 20 successful years in the industry. Shannon explains that the band's decision to take a step back does not mean they're breaking up - instead, they want to experience their success and continue performing without the pressures of producing new albums. He also suggests that the band could potentially release one-off singles if inspired. The discussion also gives a sneak peek into Godsmack's latest (and final) album, 'Lighting Up the Sky.'

Most hospitals have about 10 electronic medical record systems in place. Hospitals need to figure out how to integrate their legacy data with this burgeoning additional data, and this involves more than just cold storage, according to Larkin. Health information management teams that are fulfilling release of information requests and need to access that information every day. Clinicians often need to access historical information to treat the patients in real time, adds Larkin She notes that financial information is now being increasingly integrated into a single archival system. We've covered some absolute guff from the 90s on Broken Records, Steve and Remfry's collective favourite period of time for music but it's always led to some compelling, nostalgia-filled conversations and this week's 90s entry is no exception. Stop, collaborate and listen cause Vanilla Ice's on the mic and he's jizzin out 13 truth bombs that are going to be Hard To Swallow. Released by Republic Records in 1998, Hard to Swallow is the third studio album by American rapper Vanilla Ice. It proved to be a shallow attempt to move away from hip hop and discard his former pop image. Instead, Hard to Swallow featured what he described as "skate rock", a fusion of heavy metal, punk rock and hip hop. The album features appearances from Amen vocalist Casey Chaos, Bloodhound Gang vocalist Jimmy Pop, and Insane Poetry front man Cyco. Session musicians included drummer Shannon Larkin, keyboardist Scott Borland, and Snot guitarist Sonny Mayo. Oh and it's produced by Ross Robinson, the nu-metal superstar producer who said that working on this album was “the most punk-rock thing you could do." But was it? Or was it simply a sticky, premature gag of an album?

Mikey Doling joins Scott this week for an illuminating conversation on Soulfly, Snot, and much much more!Hailing from Coachella, California, Mikey formed Snot in the early 90's. Fronted by the late Lynn Strait, Snot were ahead of the curve in many ways. In this conversation, Mikey shares the story of how he found Lynn fronting a band in a pizza joint and how they came together. He also shares some small world connections with Ugly Kid Joe and Shannon Larkin of Godsmack being instrumental in solidifying Snot's lineup.Another California band that came up on the scene in the early 90's was Korn. In this talk, Mikey shares stories of doing shows with Korn as well as Deftones. There are some funny reflections on fashion choices of the nu-metal scene as well. Also discussed is Snot's inclusion on the 1998 Ozzfest tour and how the planets aligned for that to happen. The momentum was building with the release of 1997's 'Get Some' but everything was cut short by the untimely death of Strait. The band has, however, carried on in different incarnations. A noteable part of the band's history was the album 'Strait Up.' Featuring several guest vocalists, the album was done as a tribute to Strait. While the album received much acclaim, you'll hear about the difficulties behind it in this discussion. After the death of Lynn Strait, Mikey would go on to join Soulfly. The story of how he joined the band is very interesting. It was a true trial-by-fire situation leading up to his first show. Mikey would officially join the band for their 'Primitive' album. In this discussion, he discusses its creation and the work ethic involved. Mikey would stay with Soulfly until 2004.Other topics in this talk include Invitro, Channel Zero, Phil Demmel, solo work, hanging at Ozzy's house, and much more!Be sure to check out Mikey's new band Woyote at https://www.woyote-official.com/We hope you enjoy Scott's talk with Mikey Doling and SHARE with a friend!

Our information sessions bring prospective master's students to campus to meet our faculty and students, who discuss the program, its research, what it's like to apply, and the experience of studying at MIT for two years. The 2015 infosession was led by graduate program director Prof. Heather Hendershot and program administrator Shannon Larkin, and it featured research group directors like Ethan Zuckerman of the Center for Civic Media and Sarah Wolozin of the Open Documentary Lab; several current graduate students; and questions from attendees on-campus and online. If there was anything we didn't cover, don't hesitate to contact us at cmsw@mit.edu!

Episode 48 - Whitfield Crane

It's no secret to fans of the Decibel Geek Podcast that we, especially Aaron Camaro, have a great affinity for Ugly Kid Joe. Born out of suburbia (ie. Isla Vista, CA) in 1990, Ugly Kid Joe showed up in the middle of a power shift in the rock world with a sound that didn't fit into the glam rock style that was on its way out nor with the dirge-like sound emanating from the grunge underbelly of Seattle that would soon take over the world.  Named on the spot as a spoof of California hair-farmers Pretty Boy Floyd, Whitfield Crane and best friend Klaus Eichstadt formed the initial lineup of the band and released the breakthrough EP, 'As Ugly As They Wanna Be.' The album broke through to mass audiences with the success of the track 'Everything About You' and would go on to become the first EP to be certified multi-platinum by the RIAA. In this long-form discussion, Whit Crane shares the stories of how the band was formed, what the musical climate was like at the time, and his opinion of Pretty Boy Floyd. Ugly Kid Joe would climb the rock ladder in 1992 with the follow-up album 'America's Least Wanted' which featured the considered-by-WalMart-offensive cover depicting Lady Liberty giving the finger. Featuring a guest vocal from Judas Priest's Rob Halford on the track 'God Damn Devil,' the album solidified Ugly Kid Joe in the public consciousness with the release of their cover of Harry Chapin's 'Cat's in the Cradle' and, to a lesser degree, the opening track 'Neighbor.' A long period of touring the globe would ensue throughout the following years including opening slots for Ozzy Osbourne and Def Leppard as well as headliner status of their own. Along with lots of touring, Ugly Kid Joe was on a non-stop treadmill of appearances, interviews, award shows, and other assorted promotional activities (also LOTS of partying with such legends as Eddie Van Halen and Lemmy). Crane reflects on how crazy the lifestyle was and what memories remain with him to this day. 1995 saw the release of 'Menace to Sobriety' which featured the lineup of Crane, Eichstadt, guitarist Dave Fortner, bassist Cordell Crockett, and drummer Shannon Larkin. Featuring a tighter, heavier sound, the album received rave reviews. After disappointing sales for the 1996 release 'Motel California,' Ugly Kid Joe disbanded the following year. The members went on to other projects and bands with Larkin becoming the drummer in Godsmack and Crane doing a stint with Life of Agony as well as work with Medication and reuniting with Larkin for Another Animal. In this conversation, Crane reveals the emotions and motivations behind these projects and reflects on what he takes away from those experiences. After 15 years apart, the 1995 lineup of Ugly Kid Joe have released their new EP, 'Stairway to Hell.' Featuring a bold production from guitarist/production genius Dave Fortner, the album has all that one would expect from Ugly Kid Joe and more. We get Whit's thoughts on our impressions of the album and if he agrees or not. Aaron also gives a heartfelt testimonial to Whit on behalf of all Ugly Kid Joe fans before we wrap things up with a special preview of the upcoming single from 'Stairway to Hell.' We thank Whitfield Crane for giving us his time, attention, and reflections on a career that has rocked and shows no sign of stopping.

Mundo Cão no Orgulho Nacional !!! A nova promoção é o recente CD Duplo 'Live & Inspired' do Godsmack. Além das promoções que continuam em aberto: Headphones da Sennheiser e 'On Board Flight 666' autografado por John McMurtrie. Ouça e participe !!! Neste episódio: Godsmack, Jane's Addiction, Mundo Cão e Led Zepellin.
