HACK THE PLANET!Thirty years ago, that was the catchphrase for a high-energy youth culture movie focusing on a diverse crew of good-looking, well-dressed, "teenage" hackers in New York City. All these kids wanna do via modems and computers is to have fun....until they discover a criminal conspiracy with plans to use a computer virus which eventually result in an ecological disaster. Directed by Iain Softely (Backbeat, K-Pax, The Skeleton Key), this techno-fueled romp eventually became a cult classic powered by its danceable soundtrack (Massive Attack, Prodigy, Orbital) and its cast of up-and-comers including Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie, Jesse Bradford, Laurence Mason, and Matthew Lillard. So let's rewind back to a specific time AND place....when the only options available for enterprising youth....were to Boot Up or Shut Up!Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

In this recent interview on The Ash Said It Show, rising R&B artist Bria Cheri offered a deep dive into the creative process and powerful message behind her latest single, "Boy Toy." The conversation captivated listeners as Bria explained the song's bold title and its relevance to contemporary relationships. Challenging Norms with a Provocative Title Bria Cheri revealed that the title "Boy Toy" was a deliberate choice, designed to be provocative and challenge traditional gender roles within relationships. She shared that the song's narrative is a powerful blend of personal experience and broader observations, serving as an anthem for reclaiming power and agency. The song redefines the "boy toy" label, transforming it from a term of subservience into a symbol of strength and self-possession. Musicality and Emotional Authenticity Beyond the lyrics, Bria discussed the meticulous crafting of the song's musicality. She highlighted how the instrumentation was carefully chosen to evoke a sense of confidence and empowerment, complementing the single's powerful message. The interview also touched on the vulnerability required to write such authentic lyrics, a challenge Bria embraced to ensure her storytelling remained raw and genuine. What's Next for Bria Cheri Concluding the interview, Bria Cheri hinted that "Boy Toy" is just a glimpse of a larger, upcoming project. Fans can anticipate more music that delves into complex relationship themes, all delivered with her signature blend of soulful R&B and raw emotional honesty. This interview provides a look into Bria Cheri's artistry, cementing her as an artist who uses her music to spark important conversations about modern love, empowerment, and authenticity. Web: https://www.briacheri.com/ Bio: Bria Cheri is a graduate from Long Island University Post with a degree in Broadcast Journalism/Public Relations. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is a singer-songwriter, aspiring actress, dancer, and pianist from Jamaica Queens, NY, who currently resides in Long Island, NY. Bria has spent over a decade perfecting her craft in music professionally for over ten years. As time progressed, she explored acting in a few independent films as an extra and managed/hosted her own radio show FLAVA at Long Island University. After graduation, Bria Cheri volunteered her time online with several radio stations such as KFSM radio, FreedomKRadio, WRDR radio, Rebel 107.9 and Radiomga.com to support independent artists. She wanted to help promote their music on the networks and interview them to inform a broader audience about their talent. Music has always been a part of Bria Cheri's heart & soul. Her musical influences range from rock, jazz, house music and hip-hop. So, no matter what genre of music the artist had, she always welcomed them to her show in addition to recommending them to the affiliated stations. Today, Bria has been very tenacious with her career. When she is not performing, she will either write music on her own based on some elements of her experiences, observations, or collaborate with songwriters. Very often she will play the keyboard to create a beat to stimulate her song writing ideas. When she needs additional creative ideas, Bria Cheri notifies her mentor Donnie Klang or songwriter Kyle Davidson. Donnie Klang who is a singer, songwriter, and producer was formerly signed to Bad Boy Records after winning MTV's reality show, “Making the Band 4.” Donnie owns and operates his recording studio with business partner Matthew LaPorter, known as The Loft Sound Studio, LLC in Syosset, NY. He has produced Bria's debut EP titled, "Before the Music" as well as her second EP, “Silent Siren Vol 1, inclusive of other projects. Bria Cheri released her third EP, titled “Phoenix” in 2023, which was produced by Raphael Gibbs from Become Elite Media, LLC. The project encapsulates her growth as an artist and as a woman. This project inspired her to release another video on YouTube, “Don't Worry.' As of April 2023, Bria Cheri's musical journey enabled her the honor of meeting and opening for the legendary Styles P from the Hip-Hop group, The Lox, at Bullet Proof Studios in New Jersey. In 2024, Bria Cheri performed at the “So Fly So Fabulous Fashion Show” in New York City and was interviewed by Sway at SiriusXM on the Sway In The Morning radio show. The So Fly So Fabulous event was the first performance at a fashion show, but the energy from the audience, featuring artists and the DJ made it worthwhile in combination with the phenomenal and unique fashion designs by Sara Louis. Bria Cheri's interview with Sway expressed who she is as an artist and was very appreciative for the opportunity to showcase her talent to a national audience. The interview can be found on YouTube entitled, “Sway's Universe” at https://youtu.be/rKVkfZgWgVw. Currently, a new song “Boy Toy” produced by Donnie Klang with songwriting collaborator Kyle Davidson will be released on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. The song delves into playful roles in dating. It is an upbeat song you can dance to. More music can be found at https://briacheri.bandcamp.com. I'm very excited to present the very first episode of my new podcast/YouTube channel/online content thing, 120 MONTHS. This is a project that I've been wanting to do for a very long time. Along with my good friend John Lombardo, I'm listening to all the major music releases of the 1990s, IN ORDER, month by precious nostalgic month, from January 1990 to December 1999. I know, it's A LOT. But what else is there for us anymore, beyond the endless pleasures and pain of retreating into the past? A bit about John: I first met him in 1995, when I was a nerdy high school kid and he was an extremely cool local celebrity. As the lead singer of an alternative rock band that toured with bands like Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and many more, John was tapped into scenes that I could only imagine. He has a ton of crazy stories, and a lot to say about how music evolved during the era. I'm very much looking forward to sharing the conversations we're having on the show. We're creating Spotify playlists so you can listen along to all the music we're tracking on the show, and we've got a Substack page where you can find all of our 90s music content along with extra goodies for paid subscribers. I would love if you'd follow us there. If you like Nostalgia Trap, I think you'll dig 120 MONTHS. I'll be sending out some special discount stuff for our Substack to anyone who follows/subscribes to the Trap Patreon, so keep an eye on your inbox. And below there are some links to find the whole 120 MONTHS universe. And don't worry: Nostalgia Trap isn't going anywhere. This is just a new space to talk in detail about a weird, wonderful moment in the history of American music. I hope you'll join us! This week's episode is a TARP REPLAY. Andrew re-shares his conversation with Grammy-nominated recording artist & songwriter Miles Zuniga. In this conversation, Miles shares a behind-the-scenes look at his journey — and some absolutely incredible stories. You'll hear powerful ideas on finding inspiration in new places, changing your trajectory with just 30 days of focused energy, & so much more. The wisdom Miles shares applies far beyond music. Join us as we get down and dirty with one of the heaviest records ever made: Alice in Chains' Dirt. Frizz has a cold, hard seltzer, Bob's sipping an Iron City Light, and we're diving into the story of two Seattle misfits who scribbled the same twisted joke in their Dr. Seuss books and went on to write one of the darkest, most honest records of the '90s. Addiction, decay, and despair are all laid bare. So, pause Beavis and Butt-Head, grab a seat in your angriest chair, and settle in. We're heading down a hole with Alice in Chains.
Frizz and Bob buckle up and break records for our longest episode yet to kick off Grunge Month. We dive headfirst into the most iconic grunge album, Nevermind by Nirvana. Frizz sips on Rhubarb York Gin and Bob channels his inner Grohl with Crown Royal (Dave's fave), while we unpack the chaos, brilliance, and heartbreak that defined the band and the album that flipped the entire music world on its head. From the earliest days and vacuum-related breakups to their rise as the reluctant voices of a generation- we explore the real-life trauma, punk roots and rebellion, messy love, feminist influences, and raw emotion that bled into every track. Join us for funk, punk, and PASTAMANIA!

This was a long time in the making. Chris and I had not met until this moment but it feels we have known each other for years as we have long interacted on Twitter. In this episode, we ponder what it means for a Tori Amos song to be “underrated.” Is “underrated” in this context even something definable? Or is it ultimately subjective and personal to the individual listener? Is a song underrated because Tori rarely or never performs it? Or is it a song that's been played so many times that we've taken it for granted and can no longer hear the genius and the grit that went into its creation? Or perhaps it lives on a latter-day Tori record that's less celebrated, less heard by the general public? In the spirit of our wildly successful – and a touch controversial – Best of Tori Amos episode, we bring to you The 20 Most Underrated Tori Songs. We repeated our very scientific method of each crafting individual lists of what we believe to be Tori's most underrated tracks – from proper albums only; no bsides, no soundtracks, no covers, no seasonal music - tallying each song's respective points and then ranking the ranking them in ascending order. The result is a playlist that spans many - but not all - of Tori's records, chock full of gags, goops, gogs, and go-figures. Given how underrated we likely all agree Tori is in the broader history of contemporary music, this very episode may be the definition of a fool's errand. Regardless, in the spirit of the woman we call Tori once calling herself an “ant fucker,” we are Introverted but willing to discuss Tori Amos' most underrated songs.Playlists:20 Most Underrated Songs JVKKMM

Welcome to the LIVING FOR THE BOYLE review series! Daniel Francis Boyle originally hailed from Manchester, England and his filmmaking career took off thirty years ago in 1995 with the release of acclaimed cult thriller Shallow Grave. And ever since then, Danny Boyle (as he's officially known) has carved out a uniquely successful career not only achieving box office success several times but also winning a few Oscars along the way. During this time period, he has also become one of MY personal favorite directors, having helmed excellent ORIGINAL stories spanning several genres including children's fantasy, science fiction, crime drama, horror, and biopic. Over the next few months, I will be reviewing some of my favorite entries from his filmography in the lead-up to the long-awaited sequel to one of his more successful films….28 Years Later which will be released in the U.S. on June 20!Twenty-nine years ago, this raw, high-energy adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel about a group of young men in Edinburgh (Scotland) scoring heroin took the world by storm. Of course, it was about more than just the drugs....it was a frenetic crime comedy/drama not only exploring addiction but youth. It also featured a top-flight cast of up-and-coming UK actors along with an iconic soundtrack! Starring Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle, Kevin McKidd, and Kelly McDonald, it's time to find out about whether to....Choose Life. Send us a textThe sound of Pearl Jam takes Tom straight back to high school—late nights with MTV, learning guitar riffs from CDs, and rushing to the mall on release day. “Corduroy” hit him so hard he used a lyric in his graduation speech. Tom shares memories of figuring out the song by ear, dragging friends to concerts, and why this track still holds up decades later. If you loved Pearl Jam, grew up in the ‘90s, or ever wore out a CD trying to learn every word, you'll want to hear this one!Full Show Notes
Who doesn't love a movie focused on a party?? :) Well when they're done right at least....Animal House, Bachelor Party....and thirty-five years ago, director Reginald Hudlin (Boomerang) made his debut with one of the better ones. It also starred a hip-hop duo no less, Kid & Play - Christopher Reid and Christopher Martin co-star as two high school friends who just want to rap, dance, and meet girls. And that pretty much comprises the story of the movie......they just want to have fun along the two young ladies they have their eyes on, Sydney (Tisha Campbell) and Sharane (AJ Johnson). The cast also features several comedy legends including Martin Lawrence, John Witherspoon, and the late, great Robin Harris. Also featuring great music from Full Force....who also co-star as the main villains!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
The conversation shifted to 90s R&B's questionable lyrical content, exemplified by Sisqo's "Thong Song," prompting Gio to reminisce about his high school hip-hop fashion and dancehall music phase. Jerry's update, preceded by a caller's strip club anecdote for Willie, covered the Lakers' victory and LeBron's post-game comments, Mark Cuban's surprise at the Luka deal, Matthew Stafford's 2026 plans revealed on his wife's podcast, and Art Stapleton's update on the Giants' Rodgers pursuit. A subway altercation audio clip was also played. The hour concluded with confusion over the sold-out Dom Dolla show at Madison Square Garden.
