CAS founder Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy and British indie-dance trio Saint Etienne explore their debut album 'Foxbase Alpha' in this podcast in an interview recorded at a Classic Album Sundays event at The British Library.Colleen is joined by Saint Etienne bandmembers Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs recorded at a Classic Album Sundays event held at the British Library in October 2024. When the album was released on heavenly recordings in 1991, it's fusion of 60 cinematic pop, chill out grooves and deep house endeared audiences and got them a Mercury Prize nomination.
The bluegrass revival of the early 2000s has it's roots in music that was bubbling just under the surface years before. In the 90s there were artists laying the groundwork for what would become this musical phenomenon. Gillian Welch, Uncle Tupelo, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams and many other artists were forming the sounds of what was to come. Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings put out their album Revival in 1996 and it is not only a stalwart record, it also introduced the world to this new sound. A sound that would serve as a template for so many artists to come. So join me as I take a look at this incredible piece of art. I hope you dig it!

The 1998 album marked a turn for the trip-hop visionary band's to the dark side. Niall is joined by Craig Fitzpatrick discuss the record in front of a live audience at at Listen Closely, our series of monthly album listening parties in the Big Romance. Massive Attack - Mezzanine (1998) The third album from the British pioneers radically reshaped the band's own bright trip-hop, soul and hip-hop with darker tones of electronic, industrial, and gothic distorted guitars. Mezzanine eschews the band's trademark warmth for magnified atmospheres drawing on paranoia, negative space, and whispered vocals to create a mood that mirrored the anxieties of the digital age. The album caused internal drama. The dark, guitar-heavy vibe of Mezzanine pushed the band into new territory, but it also led to major tension. We revisit the record and talk about the band's career's highs, lows and live shows in The Big Romance with a live audience. The record contained a variety of musical styles like pop, blues, experimental psychedelic rock. And it was done with melody, humor and precise instrumentation. This was the most impressive debut album by most of the Bay Area bands. This is in tribute to Joe MacDonald wo passed away this month. Steve Earle is one of America's greatest living songwriters. His career spans decades, and he is widely respected as an incredible artist by so many musicians. His first album Guitar Town got his career started 40 years ago. It reflects the influence of other great artists like Guy Clark, and Townes Van Zandt who were huge inspirations for him.

When I go forwards, you go backwards, and somewhere we will meet.

Send us a textThe Barn and Midwest Mixtape Podcast are proud to welcome Fergal Lawler, drummer of the iconic Irish band The Cranberries, for a special conversation celebrating the 30th Anniversary Editions of their breakthrough album, No Need to Argue. The reissue arrives in stunning fashion with a limited three-LP vinyl set featuring remixes by Iain Cook of CHVRCHES, rare live recordings, a demo of “Zombie,” and the band's unforgettable MTV: Unplugged performance. Fans have long awaited the official release of the group's legendary 1995 Unplugged set, and that wait is finally over: beginning November 7, 2025, MTV Unplugged will be available for the first time as a standalone release on vinyl, CD, and digital via Island Records/UMe. A special colored vinyl edition with alternate cover art will also be available exclusively through Complex.Originally taped on February 14, 1995 at the Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn, the intimate nine-song performance aired two months later during the sixth season of MTV Unplugged. Following the release of their worldwide smash No Need to Argue, the setlist showcased the band's blend of vulnerability and power with songs like “Dreaming My Dreams,” “Ode To My Family,” “Empty,” “Zombie,” and the title track. They also revisited earlier hits like “Linger” and previewed unreleased gems “Free to Decide” and “I'm Still Remembering,” which would later appear on 1996's To The Faithful Departed.Perhaps most special is “Yesterday's Gone”, a song written by Dolores O'Riordan and Noel Hogan just one day before the show and performed only during that recording. “The only time we ever played it was for MTV,” Hogan recalls.Fergal reflected on the honor of joining the legendary Unplugged series, which previously hosted R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and The Cure:“It was a really chilled, relaxed vibe with the audience sitting on the floor. To be following in the footsteps of those artists was incredible.”Backed by Electra Strings, the quartet that had also joined them on Later with Jools Holland, The Cranberries delivered a performance critics and fans alike have deemed one of the finest in the history of the series. Publications like SPIN and Mixdown have ranked it among the best Unplugged sessions ever, while fans have clamored for its release for decades. With the anniversary reissues of No Need to Argue and the long-awaited arrival of MTV Unplugged as a standalone release, 2025 promises to be a landmark year for The Cranberries' legacy.“I'm really proud that the songs we wrote didn't need all the bells and whistles you get in the studio to sound good,” Noel shared. “They worked just as well stripped down and played acousticallwww.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger came out in 1975. It was a watershed album for him. He also made a movie by the same name and the set for that movie hosts his yearly music festival. The album is incredible and gave him a couple of hits including Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain. This week I do a deep dive into this album. I hope you dig it!

ALICE COOPER, the Godfather of Shock Rock returns! In this riff-soaked episode, Team Derringer welcomes lifelong Alice Cooper fangirl Kathy Derringer to trace the Godfather of Shock Rock from his Phoenix-area origins through his chart-smashing heyday. IN THIS EPISODE The Band's Wild Origin Story: From Phoenix high school act to the Earwigs, then Spiders, Nazz, and finally Alice Cooper. It's a name this is as deceptively innocent as the stage antics were outrageous. Classic Albums, Shock and Awe: Early psychedelic albums Pretties for You (1969) and Easy Action (1970). Paul Derringer labels these albums “shockingly bad” but crucial to the band's formation. (To disagree with Paul, send an email to feedback@derringerdiscoveries.com – ATTENTION: PAUL)
