Lt. John Nores, retired CDFW game warden, recipient of the California Governor's Medal of Valor and author of Hidden War and War in the Woods, joins Sam on The Wild Initiative to discuss the largely unknown battle for our public lands against the drug cartels. John and Sam discuss the issues that hunters and conservationists face coming up against anti-hunting activist groups, such as mountain lion management and get into some of what differentiates a game warden from a park ranger. John also looks back on his unique journey to becoming a game warden and how his time working in rough areas of Southern California directed his career path towards special operations. John and Sam then dig into the difference between legal and illegal grows, the destructive effect illegal grow operations have on wildlife and habitat areas and the extreme level of crime associated with those illegal grows due to cartel involvement. The next world war is 13 years away—that is, if you live in the world envisioned by Elliot Ackerman and James Stavridis, 2034: A Novel of the Next World War (Penguin, 2021). When writing about the intersection of combat and diplomacy, the co-authors draw from experience. Ackerman has worked in the White House and served five tours of duty as a Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he received the Silver Star, the Bronze Star for Valor, and the Purple Heart. Stavridis, a retired United States Navy admiral, served as NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe and, after leaving the Navy, as the dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. 2034 plays out a what-if scenario, starting with an incident between the Chinese and U.S. that escalates into a major conflict. “You could certainly say right now, vis-a-vis the United States' relationship with China, that if we're not in a Cold War, we are at least in sort of the foothills of a Cold War,” Ackerman says. Told through the eyes of multiple main characters from five nations, the escalating conflict begins to seem inevitable as deceit, posturing, and a game of chicken made it harder and harder for the countries' leaders to back down. Ackerman feels that a conflict between the U.S. and China in real life is possible but not inevitable. “It's a cautionary tale. There's still time to take the exit ramp,” he says. Hargis recounted an insane story from a harrowing mission that cost several guys, including Hargis' MWD Jany, their lives and changed his forever. The night raid in Kandahar on Oct. 6, 2013 included multiple suicide bombers, and a minefield of IEDs - a baited ambush. After recovering MWD Jany's remains, Hargis was recovering sensitive material from some of the Fallen, when he stepped on an IED, costing him both of his legs. Hargis was conscious for about an hour and a half as medics used tourniquets and pumped freeze-dried plasma into his veins. Soon after surgery in the hospital, Hargis was conscious enough to salute his commanding officer, despite the medical wrappings, tubes, and personnel who tried to restrain him; resulting in “the salute seen around the world”. ⁣ ⁣ Hargis then talked about becoming an elite Paralympic athlete and how it helps him forget about his disability while he competes with his team; and sadly, how all of that is being ripped away from him due to COVID-19 mandates.⁣ Follow and support him on Instagram at @josh_hargis40⁣ ⁣

The tale of Gideon is one to strengthen and inspire the faith of those who feel inadequate. In God's infinite Mercy we see Him turn a lowly and weak child into a might man of valor. God shows us that we glorify the Lord not in our own ability to win wars without His help, but instead in our inability to do so.

When I hear the word valor in a speech or the written word many times it is attached to someone that showed great bravery... But at what cost? Perhaps life itself!!Am I the only one that finds the Bible confusing??. This word study is not the typical study.  Because truthfully my walk with God has been anything but ordinary...  From no religious background and no interest in reading the Bible ... To a Holy Spirit Encounter that rocked my world.. set my heart ablaze and spurred a newfound love of writing...   I hope you join me as I relive our adventure of words.  Where I share my heart, and experience of chasing a love greater than I have ever known.  Let's grow His love each week as I openly share my thoughts, emotions and heart. http://www.triunelovesme.com Word Study Link https://triunelovesme.blogspot.com/p/words.htmlWords Written and narrated by Lori Garner

In this special episode. Paul & Stacey sit down with USMC Veteran Rocky Sickmann. Rodney “Rocky” Sickmann graduated from Washington High School in 1976 and immediately entered the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1979, just 28 days into his tour of duty at American Embassy in Tehran, Iran, Sickmann became a player in one of the most terrifying events in U.S. history. On November 4, 1979, after months of turmoil marked by the return of the exiled Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the American Embassy in Tehran was overrun by militants and its employees taken captive. Sergeant Rocky Sickmann, then just 22, was one of 65 Americans taken hostage. Sickmann remained a hostage for 444 days before being released on Jan. 20, 1981 following 14 months of diplomacy by President Jimmy Carter.Three months later, Sickmann was Honorably Discharged after six years in the U.S. Marine Corps and received several accolades during his service including the Prisoner of War Medal, The Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Award of Valor, and Good Conduct Medal. Following the military, he began working in advertising for KMOX radio in St. Louis, Mo. and then entered the private sector for Anheuser-Busch InBev. He spent the next 34 years with the company, most recently as the U.S. National Director for Military and Industry Affairs, until his retirement in July 2016. Sickmann's personal diary, “Iranian Hostage: A Personal Diary of 444 Days in Captivity” is also the only known diary to have been smuggled out of Iran and published. The diary is no longer in publication.  As the U.S. National Director for Military and Industry Affairs at Anheuser-Busch InBev, Sickmann oversaw all Military Special Events, Military and Industry Trade Media Publications, and National Industry Trade Shows. Throughout his career at Anheuser-Busch, Sickmann also played a key role in increasing Anheuser-Busch's market penetration among the Military by training wholesalers, coordinating marketing and publicity, executing national sales promotions, and planning special military events. Sickmann helped coordinate the “Here's to the Heroes Tour” which salutes the men and women of the armed forces, allowing Americans to show their support for the troops via recorded messages filmed on location at community events, celebrations, and festivals nationwide and shared with U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.Personally and professionally, Sickmann has been fortunate to share his story on many different platforms including ABC News, ESPN, Fox & Friends, Fox News, Los Angeles Times, MSNBC, NFL Time Line Series, The New York Times, to the cast of the Oscar award-winning film Argo (starring Ben Affleck), national and local Veteran and Military organizations, and educational institutions across the country. In August 2016, Sickmann's military and professional experience, coupled with his passion for our armed forces, led him to pursue an opportunity with his favorite non-profit organization: Folds of Honor. In this new role, Sickmann helps advance the Folds mission: To stand in the financial gap of the more than one million dependents adversely affected by war, providing educational scholarships to the children and spouses of those killed or disabled while serving our nation. If you would like to learn more or donate to Folds Of Honor. This is Bishop Michael Burbidge of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington. This week we observe Veterans Day, and we highlight the sacrifice of those who have served our country in the military by recalling five simple but powerful words spoken by Marine First Lieutenant Travis Manion before his final deployment to Iraq: “If not me, then who…” First Lieutenant Manion was fatally wounded on April 29, 2007, during an ambush as he led a counterattack against enemy forces. His courageous acts allowed every member of his patrol to survive. (and was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star with Valor). Like this brave soldier, many others are willing to put others before self; to serve without counting the cost; to suffer and withstand unimaginable trials. To each of you who said, “If not me, then who…” we humbly say, thank you. May Our Lord bless our military veterans now, and always.
