Truly one of the most heinous and terrible albums we've ever listened to for an episode, we go wildly deep on this monstrosity that Bryan thought was funny in 1996 and realizes today that it's not funny now and it definitely wasn't funny then, either. A lazy album full of hack rhymes and jokes with even lazier production and musicianship, neither of us enjoy it, but it does lead to a classic "P.O.D. Kast Moment" as we reckon with our 90s selves and how this kind of stuff reflected the straight white guy culture of the time. Plus, we read some interviews with lead singer Jimmy Pop, who is easily in the top 3 most detestable characters we've ever had to learn about. It's a fun one! We've got plenty more fun ones over on our Patreon, where $4/month gets you access to THREE bonuses every damn month at patreon.com/thepodkast. Last month, our pal Will Weldon joined us to discuss the Black Sabbath tribute album "Nativity in Black II", and it was a lot of fun, as it was surprisingly good and had one of the worst songs we've ever covered on it, so it's perfect for our show. Hurricane Helene's killed hundreds, but the true death toll could end up in the thousandsHurricanes and tropical storms in the US kill about 24 people directly, but a new study looking at “excess deaths” suggests that in the affected areas the mortality rate is elevated for about 15 years. Rachel Young, a postdoctoral researcher from UC Berkeley, analyzed the long tail of these storms from 1930-2015. She found the true death toll ranges from 7,000 to 11,000 per storm. Her team suspects many factors feed into the excess deaths, including how rebuilding costs could impact funds for future medical care, damage to local health systems and exposure to pollution during the storm. Their study is in the journal Nature. A new NASA mission will search for signs of life on a Jovian ice moonNext week NASA hopes to launch a major mission to one of Jupiter's most fascinating moons. The Europa Clipper will visit the ice moon Europa, whose icy shell is thought to cover an ocean that could contain twice the water that's in all of Earth's oceans. The fascination with Europa is based on the idea that water is an essential ingredient for life. As a result, Europa could be one of the most promising places in our solar system for life to exist. We talk about the upcoming mission with Cynthia Phillips, the Project Staff Scientist and Planetary Geologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.Tarantulas' creepy hair is likely a defence against predatory army antsYou would think that a venomous spider the size of your fist wouldn't have too many natural enemies. But Dr. Alireza Zamani from the University of Turku, Finland says it's the arachnid's fuzz, rather than its bite, which discourages predatory army ants. A new study in the Journal of Natural History suggests the tarantula's barbed hairs keep the ants from being able to attack the spiders, and also protects their eggs, which the arachnids coat in a generous helping of hair.Whales use underwater bubble blowing in sophisticated ways to trap preyScientists have long known that humpback whales use bubbles to corral and concentrate krill and small fish to feed on. But new underwater cameras and airborne drones have provided an unprecedented view of how this is done, revealing how the whales use complex patterns of bubbles in different ways depending on the prey. Andy Szabo, a Canadian whale biologist and executive director of the Alaska Whale Foundation, said the humpbacks' bubble-nets result in a sevenfold increase in the amount of krill they gulp up per lunge. The study was published in Royal Society Open Science. The Bomb Doctor: after the explosion this investigator seeks out evidence in the rubbleExplosive attacks often leave behind tragedy, carnage and chaos. But in the rubble is evidence that could provide vital clues for bomb forensic investigators. Kirk Yeager, the FBI's chief explosives scientist, describes his work at crime scenes as “walking into hell blindfolded.” In his new book, called The Bomb Doctor: A Scientist's Story of Bombers, Beakers, and Bloodhounds, he explains how he and his colleagues tease out evidence from the scorched and smouldering aftermath of an attack.

Send a message to the showA few things to remember: John O'Keefe is dead. His family hasn't been able to properly mourn (nor has Karen Read) and this is a horrible place for a family to be.There are kids involved. John O'Keefe was the guardian and main caregiver to his niece and nephew that in no way asked for or deserved to be at the center of this nightmare. There is a lot of scrutiny surrounding the John O'Keefe murder trial.Karen Read is not a stupid woman. She's a member of the faculty at Bentley, in their Finance Dept  for the last 16 years. She works (or worked) for Fidelity Investments in Equity Research and was a Financial Analyst. There has been so much pre-trial publicity that it may be impossible for her to be looked at fairly. This case is simply bananas. The more I learn about it, the more questions I have, beginning with What the hell happened at 34 Fairview in Canton in the early hours of January 29, 2022?We know eastern Massachusetts was in the grips of a major snowstorm. Turns out, it was a blizzard. Boston got 23.5 inches of snow that Saturday at Logan Airport, making January 29, 2022 the second largest January storm every recorded in the city. The seventh biggest snowstorm of all time in Boston's recorded history. The temperature dropped to 21 degrees. This had to have hampered the investigation. There were the red solo cups, the grocery bag, that leaf blower - very Tarantino. I watched some of the testimony this week and I checked in with Dubs, the True Crime Bloodhound, to help me out with this week's big happenings. --- Justice for Beth Brodie | Event linkHer killer is seeking parole, hearing is Thurs May 16 at the Massachusetts Parole Offices in Natick. Contact the showEpisode 63 is a walk through the frenzy that is called "The Canton Cover-up" by some, others see it as a national spectacle. Canton, the small town 15 miles south of the city of Boston, is no stranger to tragedy. Three and a half decades ago, sweet, trusting 14-year-old Shawn Ouillette was lured into the woods, beaten, and left for dead. His 14-year-old schoolmate and eventual killer said no one would miss him. He wanted to know what it was like. To kill. That was 1986. Shawn is still missed by all who love him. His killer, Rod Matthews, remains in prison.  Fast forward to present day. The events surrounding John O'Keefe's death have split this same small town in two. The case of a 46-year-old surrogate father to his sister's orphaned kids and 16-year veteran of the Boston Police Department is a shit show to no fault of his own. Lost, as is always the case, is the victim themselves. John O'Keefe was so beloved that a GoFundMe fundraising page set up for his niece and nephew after he died, had raised more than $245,000 within its first 24 hours. Karen Read, 44, who was John O'Keefe's longtime girlfriend, was arrested within days of his death and charged with drunkenly backing into him in her SUV in a snowstorm and leaving him to bleed out and freeze to death. Read has amassed a group of supporters in what some locals refer to as a "frame job" against her by a bunch of dirty townie cops, staties, FBI agents, and DAs. The cases I refer to in this episode include: Jeffrey Curley, Cambridge, Mass, he was 10 when he was taken by a neighbor with the promise of a bike, abused and killed in 1997, his murderers were put away by then-prosecutor, David Yannetti, who is now defending Read.Beth Brodie, Groveland, Mass, 1992, she was 15 when a boy who demanded her affection planned an attack with a bat and killed her in a neighbor's bedroom. Visit JusticeforBethBrodie.com - her killer is up for parole, the hearing is Thurs, May 16 in Natick. Write the parole board and tell them No Parole for Richard Baldwin, W56202 Molly Bish, Warren, Mass, 2000 - she was 16 when she disappeared from her lifeguard job at Comins Pond. Her remains were found 3 years later in nearby Palmer. The Bishes began Missing Children's Day to honor Molly and other missing kids. We meet on Fri, May 17 at Massachusetts State House in Boston. Earlier this year, we described Los Angeles act 1morning as one of the funkiest young producers in modern-day techno. And we stand by it. The fast-rising upstart is building a solid fan base around North America and beyond with a rugged, vintage style of swung techno and hardgroove. His all-vinyl DJ sets and pumping productions on the likes of Fixed Rhythms and Mála Ádh stand out for their distinctly old-school flavour—steamrolling hi-hats à la Robert Hood, swift choppage behind the decks and deep, deep grooves. Like many of his all-vinyl heroes, he's also a treat to watch behind the decks The up-and-comer had a hell of a year in 2023, from playing in Japan to going on his first European tour, and his momentum shows no signs of slowing. He debuted at New York's dweller festival this year and K9 Unit, his duo with Bloodhound, recently did a night with fellow hardgroove king Regal86. It's only a matter of time until 1morning gets to a festival or a club near you so until then, enjoy his RA Podcast for now. The mix unfortunately came with some less than stellar circumstances, as the records 1morning pulled were stolen from his car, and so instead this RA Podcast became a statement of resilience and creativity—and, in his words, "an outlet for my rage." @1morning Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/932
