Today we're going to explore a drink whose origins are only loosely Mexican — and which, even in today's landscape of endless Martini riffs, doesn't quite qualify as one. Naturally, that drink is called: The Mexican Martini. Joining us to do so is Mario Martinez, Dallas-based head mixologist for Travis Street Hospitality. Listen on (or read below) to discover Mario's Mexican Martini recipe — and don't forget to leave us a review wherever you get your podcasts! Mario Martinez's Mexican Martini Recipe - ¼ ounce agave nectar - ¼ ounce fresh lime juice - ¼ ounce orange juice - ½ ounce olive brine - ½ ounce orange liqueur, such as Jalisco 1562 - 1 ½ ounces reposado tequila, such as Tequila Ocho - 1 dash Firewater tincture (sous vide blend of peppers and Everclear, strained) Directions 1. Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice. 2. Shake until chilled and strain into a chilled Coupe glass with a Tajín rim. 3. Garnish with three olives.

They invite listeners to contribute songs that enhance their own cycling experiences – whether for motivation during rides or relaxation afterward – creating a collaborative community project.Beyond the entertainment, the hosts deliver a crucial piece of practical advice for cyclists embarking on multi-day rides: always carry a spare derailleur hanger specific to your bike model. Drawing from their experience witnessing stranded riders, they emphasize how this small, inexpensive part can save your ride when mechanical problems strike far from home. What songs power your cycling adventures? Each Tuesday, we discuss an older entertainment property, and currently, that's Lost. This week's episode was nearly unrelentingly sad for the lead character, Charlie. A brief Hurley/Libby frustration was the only relief from the nightmares and flashbacks to nightmarish real-life events.Next Tuesday, we'll continue with season 2, episode 13, "The Long Con." Tomorrow, we're back with our sitcom, A Man on the Inside.

Here's what we're reading, recommending, and revisiting this week.Catherine's library find is a picture book called I Worked Hard on That! by Robyn Wall with pictures by A.N. Kang. It stars a cute (really!) spider whose web-weaving efforts are frequently thwarted. We also recommend a scroll down Wall's list of other titles, including My First Book of Beards, "a super-stylish board book for babies and toddlers with bearded dads" (really!).Terri's random recommendation this week is more of an observation: AI is everywhere! There's Claude, Grok, ChatGPT, and more, with some useful applications and some less so. In the archives, we checked in on an episode from 2019 on how sharing our words of wisdom sometimes feels like talking to a brick wall.Next week's lineup: Lost S2 E12, "Fire + Water," on Tuesday, March 10A Man on the Inside S1 E7, "From Russian Hill with Love," on Wednesday, March 11Weekly roundup on Thursday, March 12Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.
Each Tuesday, we discuss an older entertainment property, and currently, that's Lost. In case you've forgotten, this episode would like to inform you once again that Jack has a savior complex. But he's also realized that he needs an army to take on The Others, so that's next on his to-do list.Next Tuesday, we'll continue with season 2, episode 12, "Fire + Water." Tomorrow, we're back with our sitcom, A Man on the Inside.

From Empire Rye to Whiskeyland: The Balas Brothers' Journey in Storytelling and Whiskey What is Whiskeyland? More importantly, what is your Whiskeyland? Is it visiting an up-and-coming blending house like Pursuit Spirits? Reviving a long-lost rye species (Rosen rye) with Mammoth? Representing the other Indiana distilleries with Hard Truth? Or just sipping with friends and family, whether your collection is 5 bottles or 500. Ryan and Alec Balas - who also made an incredible film on Empire Rye called Fire, Water, & Grain - join me to discuss the making of this new series. Whiskeyland Batch 1 is now out in its entirety, available on YouTube and featuring many distilleries, producers, and chefs whose stories are whiskey and whose whiskies are stories. Drawing inspiration from Anthony Bourdain to look at life through the lens of food and drink, Whiskeyland is a new look at the stories of people in the whiskey and how the strands of family and friends intertwine when a passion is discovered. Reviewing their journey from acting and editing to independent filmmaking (and, yes, content, though Ryan hates that word), we go through what drives the Balas Brothers to create and tell stories, the process of choosing which stories to feature and in which order, and why positive counter-programming can be an antidote to the ills and negativity we see every day. Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, New York - anywhere can be your Whiskeyland. Thanks everyone for listening, and thank you to Ryan and Alec for entering the Whiskey Ring! A new study out of Chico State details metal levels in watersheds around the Camp Fire burn scar. Though higher than normal, the research says the metals aren't “something that the public should be alarmed about.” Also, a mudslide in the Feather River Canyon has blocked a portion of Highway 70, and a 15 acre-subdivision in northwest Chico was approved by the city council last night.
Tom Washatka is a mainstay in the northeast Wisconsin music scene and the impact he's had in the area is huge. He is an outstanding jazz saxophonist with several critically acclaimed albums he's released under his own name and as part of various combos. He has arranged music for all types of groups, he's written numerous pieces, and he's worked with some pretty big names in jazz like pianist John Harmon, guitarist Gene Bertoncini, and his wife, vocalist Janet Planet. On top of that, he's an impeccable producer and engineer recording many excellent jazz artists at his Steel Moon Studio and releasing those recordings on his and Janet's Stellar Sound Productions label. Lighting strikes twice! We are (re)joined by watch writer-turned-novelist Jason Heaton to discuss "Sweetwater", the second installment in the Tusker Novels series. The chat was amazing. We focused on the book, but also managed to mull the idea that Blancpain might be due for a refresh on their flagship dive watch line. Will there be a new Fifty Fathoms any time soon? Jason has thoughts. This is a fun one, #watchfam!

From the energy of the earth to the sustaining breath of air, from the heat of fire to the nourishing force of water... ...the four elements are regarded as cornerstones that form the basis of different understandings, from religious traditions to philosophical theories. The concept of those four fundamental forces dates back centuries to when the Ancient Greeks sought to explain the principles between visible phenomena and the natural world. The ancient belief was that living things required all four elements to sustain a healthy life. From mythical folklores spanning multiple civilizations to Hippocrates making medicinal use of environmental elements like the earth's dirt or sunlight, the elements have been foundational to theories of health and healing. Last month, I had the pleasure of joining my friend Dr. John Lieurance for a full-day event in Sarasota, Florida for an event centered around the four elements called Elements of Vitality. The event gave participants the chance to hear from and connect with renowned professionals in the medical field, with presentations and breakout groups throughout the day. Dr. Lieurance is a naturopathic physician, chiropractic neurologist, and all-around expert in medical biohacking who has been in private practice in Florida for 25 years. He's the chief scientific advisor of MitoZen Scientific and heads up Advanced Rejuvenation, a multi-disciplinary clinic focused on treating chronic diseases, regenerative medicine, functional neurology, functional medicine, and stem cell research. He is also the founder of Out of Box Doc, an alternative and regenerative medical center that treats injuries and diseases.
