Today's episode is very rare — featuring the notoriously elusive Kenny Fresh, founder of the influential independent record label Fresh Selects. Kenny is known for discovering & ushering in the careers of SiR, Kahdja Bonet, Charlotte Dos Santos, Braxton Cook, and more. Kenny premieres two unreleased Fresh Selects singles on the show: one from a retro-future sounding duo named Figmore, as well as an intergalactic journey of a track by Styleboi_92. We discuss the Midwest music scene with Chicago’s An Abstract Tribe & St.Louis’s Bari. We tap in with Soulection’s latest release from Elujay & J. Robb, listen through a breathtaking offering from Amyra, and stoke conspiracy theories about who the mysterious singer is on Kilder’s “Dont Hide.” This episode is dedicated to the late, great MF DOOM. 01 "Sol" by Abstract Tribe (ft. Kasual Ownly) 02 "Rosie" by Figmore 03 "Kendrick's Theory" by Junii 04 "Wasting My Time" by Elujay & J.Robb (ft. As it concerns the racial history of our country, are the objects in the mirror closer than they appear or not? This is the question I ask, as I gather stories from my family members to pass along to my children and grandchildren. If you truly love music, discovering the music Kenny Fresh put outs on his label is likely to make your whole day. While most labels are looking to capitalize on the latest trends, Kenny’s Portland-based Fresh Selects instead focuses solely on putting out music he loves, introducing the world to unique, innovative artists such as beatmakers Mndsgn and Iman Omari, R&B singers SiR and Coultrain, and multi-instrumentalists Low Leaf and Dolphin. Kenny drops by our studio to give us some insight into the forefront of music and building a passion-based business. He also shares some hacks he learned along the way as a social media consultant for brands like Adidas and artists like Detroit producer, Waajeed.
▶ Discover: @freshselects ▶ Listen to Part 1: http://bit.ly/MeettheMovement005part1 Fresh Selects is pushing towards a position in the music scene that few other record labels are at. Its wide-ranging yet consistent releases mean that it can't be defined as simply a beat-label, or an R&B label and so on. With a level of quality (just look at his Discogs page) that will be soon joined in terms of it's quantity due to a string of upcoming releases in the next few months, the label can truly only be defined by it's music, something that founder Kenny Fresh cherishes. In the second part of our interview we discuss Gangster Doodles and his artwork for each of the guest-mixes Kenny features on his radio show Tight Songs, changes that Kenny would like to see in the music scene and artists that you should be looking out for. Background music comes courtesy of DJ Harrison's, Iman Omari's and The Stuyvesants' guest mixes for Kenny's radio show, Tight Shows.
▶ Discover: @freshselects ▶ Listen to Part II: https://soundcloud.com/seangran/meet-the-movement-005-kenny-fresh-of-fresh-selects-part-2-interview How many record labels do you know that started out as a blog? That's exactly the path Kenny Fresh took with his label Fresh Selects, which originally started as FreshSelects.net 7 years ago. Since then the brand's growth has been monumental, and has seen the label release projects from the likes of Iman Omari, Mndsgn, Low Leaf and SiR, the R&B singer/songwriter that's been making waves since he dropped his Seven Sundays project. Kenny and I ended up having a Skype call a few Saturdays ago that went on to last more 2 and a half hours. It was an in-depth interview that covered a range of topics, and while it may have gone by quickly for me, I've taken the liberty of splitting the audio interview into two parts to make it easier to digest. In part one we talk about Fresh Selects' journey from a blog to a record label, it's first release as an official label, Mndsgn's seminal conceptual beat-tape Breatharian, the process of turning SiR's EP into a full LP, Kenny's radio show Tight Songs and much more. Look out for the second part of the interview next week, in which Kenny and talk about Gangster Doodles and his artwork for each of the guest-mixes Kenny features on his radio show Tight Songs, changes that Kenny would like to see in the music scene and artists that you should be looking out for. Aside from featuring my mix of Fresh Selects music, this interview also features part of DJ Harrison's Tight Songs guest mix. Design by seangran, Kenny Fresh sketch by Rob Lewis.
Kenny Fresh has created a space to give the listening audience great content. Through the growing record label Fresh Selects to his weekly radio show Tight Songs. He took some time to speak on his beginnings in the music industry working with his mentor, producer Waajeed to then being a part of the Portland event The Fix and bring artists like Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth and Erykah Badu to the city. His current work via the Fresh Selects label has introduced the masses to artists like Low Leaf and Coultraine.
