The iconic jazz trumpet player Freddie Hubbard was born in Indianapolis on April 7th of 1938. During his extraordinary career, Hubbard made enormous contributions to hard bop and fusion music, performing on landmark albums by John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter and many others. Hubbard also issued many classic recordings as a bandleader. Nine of those albums appeared on the Billboard charts and his 1972 LP First Light earned a Grammy award for "Best Jazz Performance by a Group". Hubbard's technical mastery of the trumpet earned widespread critical acclaim and drew comparisons to legendary musicians like Miles Davis. Freddie Hubbard passed away in 2008 at the age of 70, but his impact on music endures. His influence extends beyond jazz, shaping hip-hop as well. His recordings have been sampled by some of rap's most respected artists, including A Tribe Called Quest, Raekwon, Common, J Dilla, and MF DOOM. In this episode, we'll celebrate Hubbard's birthday by exploring the use of his music in hip-hop.

Send us a textStepping into the animated world of Gorillaz's "Demon Days," two passionate music fans embark on a track-by-track exploration of the groundbreaking 2005 album that cemented the virtual band's place in music history. The conversation delves deep into the fictional band members—2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs—examining how their elaborate backstories contribute to the album's mystique. As each song unfolds, from the haunting intro through chart-toppers like "Feel Good Inc." and "Dirty Harry," our hosts react in real-time, discovering new layers and connections within Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett's ambitious creation.Beyond the infectious singles, this episode highlights what makes "Demon Days" a true concept album. The duo unpacks its diverse musical influences—spanning hip-hop, electronic, rock, and world music—while noting the contributions from collaborators like De La Soul, MF DOOM, and Dennis Hopper. Their analysis reveals the album's environmental themes, technological commentary, and spiritual questions that prove increasingly prescient almost two decades later. What emerges is a celebration of artistic vision that challenges musical boundaries. From the apocalyptic narrative of "Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head" to the Beach Boys-inspired harmonies closing the album, listeners gain fresh appreciation for both the hits and overlooked album cuts. By the final segment, where both hosts share their personal top three non-hit tracks, you'll want to experience Gorillaz's masterpiece with newly opened ears.Whether you're a longtime Gorillaz fan or discovering their work for the first time, this deep dive captures why "Demon Days" remains a landmark achievement in modern music—where animation, storytelling, and sonic innovation create something truly extraordinary.Support the show
On this episode, Marc talks with S.H. Fernando Jr., author of "The Chronicles of DOOM: Unraveling Rap's Masked Iconoclast," released in October of 2024 by Astra House. It's a thorough and thought-provoking biography of the legendary rapper, writer, and producer known best as MF DOOM. Fernando delves into the mystery of DOOM's work and life while also capturing the magic that his music conjured. As Fernando writes, "As a complex character who cherished his privacy, DOOM's very nature precludes any efforts to get behind the mask and into his head. Instead, his story unravels like a ball of yarn as told through the people who worked with him and knew him best."You can buy "The Chronicles of Doom" here.We hope you enjoy Marc's chat with S.H. Fernando Jr.!
Gus Lanzetta returns to the podcast from São Paulo to discuss two films by the Brazilian director Walter Salles: 1998's Central Station, starring Fernanda Montenegro, and his latest, Ainda Estou Aqui (I'm Still Here) starring Montenegro's daughter Fernanda Torres, both Academy Award-nominated for their respective performances. In Central Station Fernanda Montenegro gave one of the greatest screen performances of the 20th Century as Dora, a retired schoolteacher running a scam writing letters for illiterate people at Rio's train station who winds up rescuing an orphaned boy and transporting him to the far reaches of the country to try and reunite him with his long-lost father, in a film that reaches an overwhelming emotional power.Fernanda Torres received universal acclaim in Salles' latest film as Eunice Palva, the wife of a former leftist congressman in Rio before the coup d'état. When he is disappeared by the secret police and she is also interrogated for weeks by the state, their happy domestic life is shattered and Eunice devotes the rest of her life to social justice work and getting the state to finally admit what they did to her husband, refusing to give in to the fear, in a film that Torres has described as a “national therapy session” for a country that would wish to ignore this period in their history.Gus and I talk about these two acting dynamos, the Tropicalia movement, Burt Lancaster, Bugs Bunny, MF DOOM, crying at the movies, and our hopes that Brazil finally wins the first Oscar for their cinema. MF DOOM was a legendary emcee known for wearing a mask and keeping a distance from fame in a genre where artists usually embrace the spotlight. DOOM passed away in 2020, but his life is documented in a biography recently released called The Chronicles of DOOM: Unraveling Hip-hop's Masked Iconoclast. In the book, Writer and journalist S.H. Fernando Jr aka SKIZZ sheds light on DOOM's story, which includes his time spent right here in Boston. Today on The Common, Darryl's conversation with SKIZZ and local hip-hop aficionado Dart Adams about the book and DOOM that aired on Radio Boston earlier this year. In 1995, a fervent and wry rapper (Sean Daley, aka Slug) and a dexterous deejay (Anthony Davis; Ant for short) helped co-found a platform to help put Midwest -- and more precisely, Minnesotan -- hip-hop on the map. Three decades later, Rhymesayers Entertainment is one of the most popular and influential modern rap labels in existence, releasing seminal LP's by MF Doom, Freeway, Aesop Rock, Brother Ali, and Atmosphere: Slug and Ant's infectious repartee that helped define the Rhymesayers aesthetic from the jump: While Daley puts the listener in a metaphorical chokehold -- thanks to a volatile delivery of vulnerable self-reflection -- Davis' textured musical milieu allows plenty of room for revelry within a hybrid of soul, gospel and rap's golden age. On this week's episode, the pair ponder how record shopping has actively made their lives better, why racially integrated album covers usually lead to great music, and when their first-ever appearance on vinyl became a time capsule of their first-ever collaboration. Atmosphere will commemorate the 20th anniversary of their landmark release You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having by kicking off their aptly-titled Imagine The Fun tour in January. Tickets, social media and pre-orders for Ant's third volume of his Collection of Sounds series (dropping next month) are all available at atmospheresucks.com.

Broken down into five sections: The Man, The Myth, The Mask, The Music, and The Legend, journalist S. H. Fernando, or SKIZ, chronicles the life of Daniel Dumile Jr., beginning in the house he grew up in in Long Beach, NY, into the hip-hop group KMD, onto the stage of his first masked show, through the countless collabs, and across the many different cities Daniel called home. Centering the music, SKIZ deftly lays out the history of east-coast rap against DOOM's life story and dissects the personas, projects, tracks, and lyrics that led to his immortality.Including exclusive interviews with those who worked closely with DOOM and providing an unknown, intimate, behind the scenes look into DOOM's life, The Chronicles of DOOM is the definitive biography of MF DOOM, a supervillain on stage and hero to those who paid attention. When MF DOOM passed away suddenly in 2020, the music world grieved for one of the most legendary and mysterious rappers in the genre. DOOM, who grew up on Long Island, was known for performing in a mask, concealing his identity, and creating multiple cult-classic underground albums like Operation: Doomsday, Madvillainy, and MM..FOOD. Journalist S.H. Fernando Jr. has written a new biography of the influential rapper, The Chronicles of DOOM: Unraveling Rap's Masked Iconoclast, and he discusses his research with us ahead of his book event tonight at the Brooklyn Museum in conversation with Hanif Abdurraqib.
I am joined by Hyperius Blake to discuss their musical journey, the upcoming MF Doom inspired show and why Cracker Barrel has the best gift shop.
We must begin this week by paying tribute to Ka, a truly great rapper and producer who made uncompromising music for the real heads. May he rest in peace. The first segment of the show this week acts as a real-time processing of the incredibly sad news of Ka's passing. DBRP hosts Demone Carter, David Ma and Nate LeBlanc share some thoughts on Ka's music, his legacy, and the distinct unfairness that he released his art at a time when it will only be appreciated by a niche audience. After that we are joined for a second time by rapper Kurious. We are discussing his new record Majician, which drops October 18th on MF DOOM's Metal Face Records via Rhymesayers. Kurious really opens up here, detailing his previous struggles with overthinking, his decades-long friendship with DOOM, and even at one point has to pause the interview to resume parenting duties, something Demone can relate to! Majician finds Kurious, who has always had a refined flow, in a deeply creative space, playing off of sample based beats from producer Mono En Stereo with a freewheeling nature not heard since his earliest work in the 90s. DOOM's presence looms large, on the record and in this conversation, which gives the entire affair a distinctly bittersweet edge. If you like what you hear, please consider giving us a 5-star review on the podcast app of your choice, we would really appreciate it! We also have a Patreon www.patreon.com/dadbodrappod where we post exclusive segments, review records, make playlists, and interact with our audience in a more direct way than other social media platforms. DBRP is produced by Demone Carter. Theme song by DEM ONE and Cutso. Our show is one of the many great podcasts on the Stony Island Audio network. Add reaction
In this edition of OcTrendber SurGeist, Jack and Miles discuss the incipient disaster that is Hurricane Milton, empty Spirit Halloweens being turned into Spirit Christmas stores, TikTok being sued for 'wreaking havoc' on teen mental health, the new 'Gladiator 2' novelty bucket looking like an MF DOOM tribute, Trump's racist "murder gene" rant (and even more terrible shit he's said and done that has been completely normalized by the mainstream media) and much more!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
