As we continue our search for a permanent home in Connecticut, MSYH.FM is hosting monthly studio recording sessions in New Haven, CT. These sessions are taking place at The Sandbox, courtesy of the Greater New Haven Art Council. As a part of our monthly DJ showcase we will be highlighting our station's local resident DJs and hosts as well as guest DJ sets from some of the state's most talented selectors. This month we are featuring SoundScape's own Gavi. From the artist: After years of engaging with music through dance, Gavi has transitioned into exploring his deep connection to music by taking on DJing. Inspired by the sounds and atmosphere curated by Soulection, Nasthug, Knox, and Kybba. Gavi aims to provide a similar sense of freedom and exploration in his sets. Driven by the music that moves him, he hopes to share that same energy with anyone who stops to listen. Welcome to part two of this two part episode with Ian Ewing.Today's guest is Ian Ewing, a self-taught instrumentalist, producer and artist who blends a smooth mix of hip hop, electronica, and R&B to create a sound that has been supported and showcased by Chillhop Music, SiriusXM, BBC One Extra, Soulection, Complexion's Future Beats Show, and many others. At a young age, the Southern California-based artist (by way of Wisconsin) fell in love with hip hop and the history behind it. This was his gateway into electronic beat production where he finds himself today, as he strives to create ambient compositions of sample-based sounds blended with his own instrumentation. Ewing has headlined various shows across the US, and has both collaborated and toured with artists including Flamingosis, Louis Futon, Joey Pecoraro, Anomalie, Galimatias, and Cautious Clay. In this conversation:- The pro's and con's of having an over-analytical perspective.- Making music that is true to who you are creatively and musically.- The importance of the work behind the scenes.- How creating art that is in line with what is interesting to you leads to a more sustainable path.- And, we even get a little insight in to Ian's passion for hummus. If you haven't already, I invite you to listen to Part 1 of this conversation, as we covered several topics from Ian's unique and experienced perspective.Alright, with all of that said, let's drop in to Part 2 of this conversation with Ian Ewing.Top 3 Gems From This Convo:1. YOUR MUSIC IS A SELF-PORTRAIT AND OFFERS A REFLECTION.If you're wondering how you're doing in general, observe what you make. How does it make you feel? Can you hear that you've skipped meals, rest, and other forms of nourishment that supports your creative work?2. BE KIND TO YOURSELF IN THE WORLD OF CONTENT CREATION.Making music and content are each challenging tasks on their own. Combining them, even more so. Therefore, allow your content to flow naturally out of the way you work so that you can avoid creating unnecessary work for yourself.By the way, make content that you enjoy making.3. MAKING MUSIC THAT IS TRUE TO WHO YOU ARE.Playlists offer an opportunity for growth and exposure. And, may encourage fitting in over exploring your own artistic development.Only you may really know when you are being honest to your artistic visions and personal principles. MAKE BETTER DECISIONS, NOT MORE DECISIONS.There is not a direct relationship between the quantity of your decisions or complexity in your process and the quality of what you produce. Remember this the next time you are immersed in your process.2. MORE NOTES DOES NOT EQUAL MORE MUSIC.Allow understanding what serves the music to be your guide. Record yourself playing and practicing and ask yourself what may be removed without reducing the song.3. DEFINE YOUR OWN SUCCESS.In today's environment, there is considerable external pressure imposing definitions of success.Take ownership of your success by choosing to define it.In doing so, you succeed on your own terms with an understanding of what is within your control.Listen on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.Tap in with toru:Substack: Instagram: @torubeattiktok: @torubeatTap in with Ian Ewing:Instagram: @ianewingmusicTo jump to a specific moment in the conversation:0:00 Intro 2:50 Listening Session, Track 111:10 Recording and Listening to Yourself 15:30 Decisions: Making More v. Joe Kay is a visionary, entrepreneur, sound selector, DJ, and Co-Founder of Soulection - one of the most impactful cultural movements of the last decade. Joe's creative journey began in 2011, as he launched Soulection Radio from his own bedroom. What began as a passion project quickly blossomed into a weekly Apple Music radio show (amassing over 600 episodes), an independent music label, the Soulection Experience festival, a world-touring concert, and the Soulection Supply clothing line. We sat down with Joe Kay at the Timeless Living Estate in Joshua Tree, California for an exclusive peak into his newest venture. At its core, Timeless Living is a curated and bookable physical space that feels like the perfect blend of aesthetic and nature. It's a safe creative home to disconnect, recharge, and be inspired. And for Joe Kay, it beautifully expands on the world he's crafted through music. -- Follow Joe Kay: @joekay Follow Timeless Living: @timeless.living Follow Culture Study: @culturestudy Follow Umar: @u_issa -- Credits: Director: Zabel Castillo (@zabelcastillo) Editor: Richard Olea (@gahseh) 2nd Editor: Aaron Arteaga (@aaron_f_arteaga) BTS: Michael Angeleo (@maika.angeleo Video clips courtesy of Joe Kay, Soulection, Timeless Classics
omoidé is UNSIGNED HYPE. Had it not been for a PSP he hacked in high school to make his first beats, maybe the producer from Chicago would've never experienced the musical journey he's been on ever since: Releasing jaw-dropping "flips" of some of our favorite songs and becoming a major production force on SoundCloud, building relationships with and becoming a household name on Soulection Radio, while balancing his passion with a full-time job as a doctor. We talk about it all!
Soulection is a music startup, which has quickly grown to be a powerhouse with a record label, a popular radio show, and worldwide tours—bringing together an international group of music lovers. It all began as an online podcast created in a garage in Southern California. At the time, Joe Kay was a college student who was looking to bring independent artists, DJs, and producers to fresh ears. Today, co-founder Joe Kay reflects on Soulection's grassroots beginnings and its impact on the music scene. The episode originally aired in 2019.

Her debut EP, 'SOFIA' is a blend of the sounds that define her life—R&B, Soul, and Jazz. Sophia pays homage to her biggest influences by taking inspiration from D'Angelo's soft vocal runs and melodies, and Amy Winehouse's ability to create timeless music. Sophia's music and sound are uniquely hers, and incomparable to any current artist. On her debut EP, SOFIA, she's created a new neo-soul feeling for her audience to enjoy live and at home. Notably known for her voice—her tone is luscious yet sultry, and her use of runs and harmonies truly show off her skills. Her lyrics are personal and most importantly, relatable to her fans. One thing that sets her apart is how captivating and confident Sophia is on stage. She has opened for artists such as JoJo, Soulection, Kenyon Dixon, Gene Noble, Son Little, and has performed with artists at Lollapalooza. Additionally, she sold out her first headline shows in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Brooklyn, and has already performed internationally within her first year of touring.

Are you ready to take ownership of who you are and make the reality you want to live? When you show up to the energy of creation, you can collaborate with the Universe/God to make the reality you want to live in. In this episode of the Brave School Podcast, I speak with Pea the Feary, an Afrofuturist artist, and mystic. Whose work is about possibility, potential, beauty, and realization. Through their work, Pea is creating beauty while opening portals for others to do the same if they would like. She wants creatives, non-linear, multidimensional geniuses to know they can thrive in this world. You can be yourself, be free, and have power over your reality, and Pea is here to share that message. Listen in to learn how timeline jumping allows you to create your own reality even when you're feeling stuck. You will also know why timeline jumping isn't selfish or wrong because it's about accessing your reality in all regards. In This Episode You Will Learn: [8:37] Pea – the combination of Teatree oil and a rocket ship. [11:32] Pea's strict Christian background and how it formed her relationship with spirit. [13:38] How she shifted her communication and relationship with God to her “big” self. [20:04] How human design allowed her to access the creative potential within. [30:07] Timeline jumping – shifting your state of being/vibration to more of you. [38:02] How to stop lying to yourself with spiritual bypassing, and instead use timeline jumping. [42:50] Pea explains how death makes her feel as if not losing anything. [48:20] Understanding the creative processes can be defined as timeline jumping.
