Welcome to Episode #26 of the 90s State of Mind podcast - a collaborative project between 4ever in Electric Dreams and Blue-in-Green:RADIO. This podcast series sees Imran (London, UK) and Rhonda (California, USA) delve into some of their favourite releases from the 90s and for this episode, the pair celebrate the sophomore album release of Erykah Badu's 'Mama's Gun'. Released on November 18, 2000, by Motown Records, the album was largely recorded at the Electric Lady Studios in New York City with the Soulquarians at the project's helm. Spearheaded by the singles 'Bag Lady', 'Didn't Cha Know' and 'Cleva', Badu explored themes of love, self-worth and social equity across the album's 14 tracks. The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America four weeks after release, denoting shipments of one million units in the US. 'Mama's Gun' became Badu's first top-10 hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 by peaking at number six, and earned two nominations at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards (2001). Imran & Rhonda delve deep into the album's make-up exploring the singles, collaborators and Badu's growth from 'Baduizm'. www.4everinelectricdreams.com/ Blue-in-Green:RADIO is a London-based online internet radio station which celebrates 21st century soul, jazz, funk, Latin & hip-hop music. www.blueingreenradio.com TuneIn: bit.ly/2LBK0BD

Cole's purported final chapter on Notorious Mass Effect with Analytic Dreamz. This segment examines "The Fall-Off," the rapper's seventh studio album and only double album, released February 6, 2026, via Dreamville and Interscope Records.Analytic Dreamz details the project's ambitious scope: 24 tracks split across two discs ("Disc 29" and "Disc 39"), exceeding 100 minutes in runtime, with a reflective, career-summation narrative echoing mixtape-era aesthetics. Features include Future (on multiple tracks), Tems, Burna Boy, Erykah Badu, Morray, Petey Pablo, PJ, and others, backed by production from Cole himself, T-Minus, The Alchemist, Boi-1da, FnZ, and more.As of February 13, 2026, industry projections from Hits Daily Double and echoed across Complex, XXL, and HotNewHipHop position the album for a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 with approximately 291,000 album-equivalent units in its first week—around 115,000 in pure sales (CDs, vinyl, digital downloads) driven by the innovative "Trunk Sale" tour tactic for direct-to-consumer physicals, plus 176,000 from streaming and equivalents. This would mark Cole's seventh consecutive No. 1, surpassing his 2021 The Off-Season (282K) and far exceeding 2024's Might Delete Later (115K), amid the "final album" hype fueling media and fan amplification.Analytic Dreamz analyzes the market signals: robust physical component stands out in modern rap, long tracklist boosts streaming volume, and strategic narrative plus tour activation align for strong commercial impact. Critical reception highlights lyrical introspection and evolution, though some note self-referential elements and length. With no major contradictory forecasts, this positions "The Fall-Off" among 2026's top rap openings, confirming Cole's enduring dominance while priming for official chart confirmation.Stay tuned as Analytic Dreamz provides the comprehensive breakdown on this landmark release and its place in hip-hop legacy.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/exclusive-contentPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Cole delivers his most ambitious and introspective work yet with The Fall Off, his self-proclaimed final album released February 6, 2026. This double album spans 24 tracks across two discs—Disc 29 and Disc 39—each featuring 11 main songs plus a bonus. Presented by Analytic Dreamz on Notorious Mass Effect, this segment breaks down the project's profound narrative structure.Disc 29 captures J. Cole at age 29, returning to his Fayetteville hometown a decade after moving to New York, reflecting on pivotal crossroads in relationships, career dedication, and city roots. Disc 39 shifts to age 39, offering an older, more peaceful perspective on a similar homecoming, shaped by creative renewal following his 2024 resolution with Kendrick Lamar.Nearly eight years after teasing the concept in KOD's "1985," The Fall Off evolves into a full-circle moment from Cole's debut era. Executive produced by J. Cole, Ibrahim “IB” Hamad, T-Minus, and Dreamville, the album maintains minimal features for a self-driven feel, with standout contributions from Future on “Run a Train,” Tems and Erykah Badu on “Bunce Road Blues,” Burna Boy on “Only You,” Westside Gunn on “The Villest,” and others. The rollout emphasized intimacy and scarcity: announced in January 2026, preceded by the Birthday Blizzard '26 EP (four freestyles hosted by DJ Clue on Cole's 41st birthday), and distributed direct-to-consumer via his official website for stronger fan ownership and data control. Selective press included one major interview, while fan-led listening events in homes, record stores, bars, and spaces like Brooklyn Public Library's Bars & Books gathering amplified community engagement over traditional hype.Thematically, subtle nods to the 2024 lyrical tensions appear, notably in the alternate-history track “What If,” imagining reconciliation. Analytic Dreamz explores how this strategic, narrative-first approach reinforces J. Cole's authenticity, prioritizing depth, loyalty, and legacy over mass exposure in today's industry landscape.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/donationsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

A catchup with the Limerick rapper, poet, thinker, writer and actor Denise Chaila. Denise Chaila has been working on her own artist development in recent years. The Limerick artist has spent time away from the spotlight surfacing only to offer a glimpse of what's preoccupying her eloquent mind. A lot has happened in the five and half years (!) since Denise and I sat down with pals to have a chat for the Podcast. This time around, it's just the two of us, with Denise sharing the journey that took her from Ed Sheeran remixes and support slots to an artistic and creative re-evaluation that prompted her to put the breaks on her career as it barrelled ever higher and forward. In this episode, Denise tells us why she shunned the limelight, and the machinations of the music industry around her, and illuminates on recent times that have taken her to visit the childhood homes of J Dilla (Detroit) and Michael Jackson (Indiana), making a film with Limerick-born LA photographer and director Brian Cross aka B+ about the Supremes performing in Limerick, meeting Erykah Badu and her recent experiences exploring traditional Irish music and sessions. On Friday, Denise Chaila performs a rare hometown show as part of All We Have Are Days, with the show at billed as an in conversation and performance, which as Denise told me will aim to tear down the barriers of performer and audience. * Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord community Listen on Apple | Android | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Pod.Link
Uppföljaren till 2015-års mixtape But you caint use my phone.

Join in the conversation!Welcome back to another episode of the Hella Chisme Podcast. In this weeks episode welcome back Logan. We discussed cracked manicures, a humid week, and suddenly we're knee-deep in the albums that raised us. One memory leads to another and the soundtrack writes itself: Ashanti's first two records blaring through late-night drives; Keisha Cole's confessions that made us bold; the lush, lived-in worlds of Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, and India Arie where interludes mattered and sequencing told a story. These aren't just songs—they're rooms we can still walk into.Enjoyed the ride? Follow, rate, and share the show with a friend who knows every word to Rain On Me. James Poyser is a keyboardist for The Roots, and one of Badu's closest collaborators who was in the studio with Erykah to make Mama's Gun. Poyser shares his memories of the album, and listeners share their memories of the music, in this installment of our Silver Liner Notes album anniversary series.
Welcome to Episode #25 of the 90s State of Mind podcast - a collaborative project between 4ever in Electric Dreams and Blue-in-Green:RADIO. This podcast series sees Imran (London, UK) and Rhonda (California, USA) delve into some of their favourite releases from the 90s and for this episode, the pair celebrate the timeless and pioneering music of D'Angelo. Michael Eugene Archer - better known as D'Angelo - sadly passed away 14th October 2025. Following the success of albums 'Brown Sugar' (1995), 'Voodoo' (2000) and 'Black Messiah' (2014), D'Angelo went on to achieve widespread acclaim and be heralded as ushering in the introduction of neo-soul, opening the door to artists including Erykah Badu, Bilal and Jill Scott. As a Grammy-winning artist, Billboard named him one of the greatest R&B artists, while Rolling Stone magazine ranked him as one of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. In 2025, D'Angelo was inducted into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. Imran & Rhonda delve deep into D'Angelo's music, exploring each of his three album releases, numerous collaborations and b-sides, plus they regard his efforts within the wider context of contemporary soul. www.4everinelectricdreams.com/ Blue-in-Green:RADIO is a London-based online internet radio station which celebrates 21st century soul, jazz, funk, Latin & hip-hop music. www.blueingreenradio.com TuneIn: bit.ly/2LBK0BD
Doors don't open by accident, they open when you show up, help out, and let people see you do the work. We dive into the long game of volunteering your way into the room, why the front desk is a secret networking engine, and how consistency with energy and integrity turns a wave into a welcome. From moderating panels to being invited back as press, these stories map the trail from access to opportunity and remind us that generosity, sharing invites, forwarding links, paying it forward... has a way of circling back with interest. We also get candid about creative evolution. Rebrands can feel risky when your community loves what they already know, but innovation keeps the work alive. Think Outkast-level reinvention and Erykah Badu's fearless style: same soul, sharper edge. We unpack moving between podcast networks and independence, why uncertainty doesn't have to be scary, and how to communicate change so your audience comes with you. The takeaway: update the look to reflect who you are now, not who you were two years ago, and keep the mission front and centre. On the practical side, we celebrate sustainable style and real-world logistics. Rewear the fit, restyle the silhouette, and catch the bus with a tee in your bag and heels for later. It's not about budget; it's about creative operations that let you move through multiple rooms in one day. We close with rapid-fire gems—self-awareness as the most overlooked growth hack, music that fuels momentum, and the reminder that growth feels like stretching: uncomfortable, intentional, and worth it.If this resonated, tap follow, share with a friend who needs a nudge to show up, and leave a review so more listeners can find the conversation. Your support helps us keep innovating, inviting, and opening doors for each other. For more Colah detz... https://linktr.ee/blackinthegarden?utm_source=linktree_profile_share

Time's Taylor Crumpton returns to Pop Pantheon to explore the deeply personal and trenchantly political R&B of neo-soul earth mother Erykah Badu. Taylor and Louie discuss Erykah's upbringing in Dallas, her early work as part of a rap duo, and her early collaborations with the Roots and D'Angelo. From there they break down her legendary 1997 album Baduizm, her follow up Live, which included her improv'ed hit "Tyrone," and 2000's socially-conscious Mama's Gun. Along the way, they touch on her legendary love life and innovative later era work, like her 2015 mixtape But You Caint Use My Phone. Finally, they rank Erykah Badu in The Official Pop Pantheon. This week we’re celebrating two iconic albums that have shaped the sound and soul of a generation, Erykah Badu’s Mama’s Gun and Jill Scott’s Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1, both turning 25 this year. Joining us for this nostalgic and soul-filled conversation is Taryn Finley, journalist and founder of the Unbothered platform. During this conversation, we explore how these albums captured the essence of Black womanhood, love, sensuality, and self-discovery, and why they remain powerful touchstones for healing and self-expression today. We also talk about the emotional honesty both artists brought to their music and how their art continues to inspire new generations to embrace softness, vulnerability, and joy. Interviewers: Joe Moore & Anne Philippi Guests: TK Wonder & Cipriana Quann (The Quann Sisters) Recorded: June 18 during MAPS PS 2025 Content note: This episode discusses childhood sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, suicidal ideation, disordered eating, and recovery. Identical twins, writers, and culture-shapers TK Wonder and Cipriana Quann join Joe and Anne for a frank, generous conversation about identity, resilience, and the long arc of healing. Cipriana recounts launching Urban Bush Babes in 2011 to center women of color in beauty and fashion—work that led to a Vogue “day-in-the-life” feature and collaborations with couture houses. TK shares the parallel path of her music career (opening for artists from Sting and Nas to Erykah Badu and Queens of the Stone Age) and the sisters' ongoing writing, public speaking, and mental-health advocacy. They reflect on the fashion industry's policing of natural hair, how those daily microaggressions erode self-worth, and why legal protections like the CROWN Act matter. The heart of the episode is their survival story: a decade of abuse by their father, endured separately yet witnessed together. Seeing one another live through it—“a physical manifestation of survival,” as they put it—kept them alive. As adults, daily check-ins remain their core practice. Psychedelics entered their lives years later. With careful set and setting, education, and professional support, psychedelic sessions—especially ibogaine—helped surface grief, release shame, and reframe entrenched coping strategies. Cipriana's first extended session unlocked tears she'd been forced to suppress as a child; TK describes a transformative ibogaine experience that catalyzed a decisive shift away from refined sugar and ultra-processed foods toward sustained movement, earlier mornings, and mindful nourishment. Both emphasize that psychedelics are not “magic pills” in isolation: integration, therapy, community, and lifestyle design make insights durable. The conversation also tackles safety and access. The sisters stress working with experienced facilitators and medical oversight, naming that these modalities aren't for everyone. They call for more affordability and BIPOC representation in a field that can still feel exclusionary, while holding a wide tent vision—everyone deserves the chance to heal. They note how narratives are changing (from early-2000s panic to mainstream book-club conversations), and how stories alongside science move culture and policy. Highlights Fashion, hair politics, and the CROWN Act's importance. Sisterhood as lifeline; daily check-ins as grown-up therapy. First sessions: somatic release, grief, and reframing shame. Ibogaine's role in behavior change; why integration is the bridge. Safety, access, and representation: making healing containers truly welcoming. If you're exploring this work: educate deeply, choose qualified support, prioritize integration, and remember—your past is a chapter, not your whole story.
The RH Factor's Hard Groove might sound uncontroversial to modern ears, but in the early 2000s it was revolutionary. With this record, Roy Hargrove broke away from the straight-ahead jazz revival of the Young Lions era and created something entirely new. Hard Groove blended Roy's trumpet with the voices of R&B and soul heavyweights like D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, and Common, artists whose platinum-selling albums (Voodoo, Mama's Gun, Like Water for Chocolate) already featured Roy's melodic horn playing and orchestral arrangements. With Hard Groove, Roy flipped the script: instead of lending his sound to the hip hop and neo-soul world, he invited those artists into a jazz record. The result was a landmark project that blurred genres and redefined what jazz could be in the 21st century. You'll Hear It has been nominated for a Listener's Choice award for Best Music Podcast at the Signal Awards. Upon its emergence in 1997, this revolutionary travelling music festival, helmed by superstar Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan and featuring exclusively women or women-led acts, exploded the notion that popular music could only support a token quota of women's voices. There is a new documentary out now on the history of Lilith Fair. It is really good! It touched on so many topics that are relevant to the music industry today. The artists in the documentary are so good; Sarah McLachlan, Bonnie Raitt, Erykah Badu, Sheryl Crow, Brandi Carlile, and Indigo Girls just to name a few. I wanted to bring my interview with Amy Ray of Indigo Girls to you again. It was such a treat to chat with her, and this just felt like good timing! I hope you dig it!

What happens when you pair a great guitar player with a badass bassist? You get mind-bending sounds from gifted producer and multi-instrumentalist Blake Mills — known for his work with Alabama Shakes and Bob Dylan — and Grammy-winner Pino Palladino who has reshaped how we hear the bass. See: Palladino’s collaborations with everyone from Erykah Badu to Nine Inch Nails. “Taka” is hard to pin down, but easy to take in. And you can take it in IRL, because Pino Palladino & Blake Mills are hitting The Ford on Friday, Sept. 26.
When does Afro Blue and Smells Like Teen Spirit belong on the same record? When it's a Robert Glasper album! In 2012, Glasper's Black Radio brought together artists like Erykah Badu to bring a jazz standard, Afro Blue, back into the popular music canon. Black Radio hit #1 on the jazz charts, while simultaneously reaching #4 on the hip-hop R&B charts and #15 on the Top 200. The Blue Note pianist has been bending genres since the 90s, bringing together the best of traditional jazz and weaving it seamlessly with R&B, hip-hop, soul and rock & roll. And it all fits, because Glasper is equally at home in all of these categories. He grew up listening to all kinds of music, like Nirvana, Billy Joel, Busta Rhymes -- everything. Black Radio, he says, was a way to put his "life on wax". Rob Harvilla from 60 Songs to Explain the 90s: The 2000s joins Adam and Peter to dive into what makes this album great, and how it refutes from any attempt to categorize it. From the J. Dilla Influence, to Casey Benjamin's album-defining flute, to the Erykah Badu of it all, you'll never hear this album the same way again. And this album inspired what is possibly our best YHI outro yet. Let us know if you agree!
