Farmers in Northern Ireland have been holding tractor protests and blocking traffic. They're asking for more financial help as they face rising fuel prices. The government in the Republic of Ireland has told farmers there, that 100 million euros are being made available to support them. The huge rises in fuel costs since the war in the Middle East, may be putting pressure on households across the UK, but farmers say their costs are being pushed so high, they could be facing a crisis for their businesses. The Country, Land and Business Association, the CLA, has revealed it made two bogus applications for licensed waste carrying. Businesses can apply for these licences and then charge people to take away their rubbish. The CLA made the applications to prove the system is flawed, one application was made on behalf of a cow called Beau Vine and another for a fictitious character called Laurie Load, both were approved by the online system, with no checks. "Do nothing ..do nothing...do nothing ..and then oh F**k." That's how a leading economist has charactersied the Government's four-part fuel plan. New Zealand's currently in phase one of the plan which means there's enough fuel but prices are rising. Formal rationing would kick in at phase four. Simplicity chief economist Shamubeel Eaqub spoke to Lisa Owen.
Fuel stocks are down for the second time in a row, and with one small shipment delayed from Singapore the government is warning New Zealanders should expect more of the same. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is offering assurances it's all within normal fluctuations and the country is staying at phase 1 of the fuel plan - at least for now. In this episode of Fuel Your Drive, I break down exactly how entrepreneurs fix cash problems fast—because I've lived it. I share real moments from my journey where I was deep in the negative, facing serious financial pressure, and what I did to turn it around quickly. The truth is, when things get tough in business, quitting doesn't solve anything—you're still in the same situation. I explain why sales and speed of execution are the ultimate solutions, how urgency can completely change your outcome, and why embracing the hard moments is what separates winners from everyone else. If you're struggling right now, this is your reminder that you can sell your way out of any situation—but only if you take action immediately and stay in the game.

A Clare farming representative claims young farmers have been left behind by the Government's fuel supports. The €505 million package unveiled on Sunday includes direct payments to farmers as well as agricultural contractors, those in fisheries, hauliers and bus operators. The announcement has seen excise on petrol and diesel cut by 10 cents until the end of July as well as a 2.4 cent reduction on green diesel and the postponement of carbon tax increases until October's Budget. Doora-based chairperson of the Clare branch of the Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers Association, Micheál O'Dwyer, says more could've been done to assist younger people looking to get a foothold in the sector.
There was heated debate in Clare County Council this week, with some councillors clashing over the Government's and in some cases the Gardai's response to last week's fuel protests. Although all elected members unanimously supported an emergency motion seeking enhanced cost of living supports, there were divided opinions over the coalitions response to the oil shock, with Fine Gael Councillor Pat Burke coming out in favour of government efforts. Calls were also made for further cuts to Green Diesel and for more transparency surrounding prices charged at filling stations. The government is facing a crucial test in the Dáil today, as the Dáil is set to vote on a confidence motion in the Government over its ongoing handling of the fuel crisis. Sinn Féin is bringing forward a motion of no confidence following days of fuel protests and growing anger over the cost of living. While ministers point to a €505 million support package as proof they're responding, opposition parties argue it's too little, too late. Alan Morrissey spoke about this with Shannon Sinn Féin TD Donna McGettigan. He began by asking her what core message her party wants to send to the government and the public with the motion. He was also joined on the line by Tulla-based Fianna Fáil Minister of State, Timmy Dooley. Image © Oireachtas.ie

Vote here to help The Intercept Briefing win its first Webby Award for best news and politics podcast.Show description: Vice President JD Vance is set to lead renewed negotiations with Iran this weekend to bring an end to the U.S.–Israel war on the country that stretched into a second month. The talks come after a roller coaster of a week, which began with President Donald Trump threatening genocidal war crimes against Iran. “A whole civilization will die tonight,” he wrote on social media, “never to be brought back again.” Trump urged Iran to make a deal with the U.S. and fully open the Strait of Hormuz by Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET. Then, shortly before the deadline, Trump took to social media again to say Iran and the U.S. had reached a two-week ceasefire agreement brokered by Pakistan. Trump said the U.S. received a workable 10-point plan from Iran to begin negotiations on a durable ending to the war. In the meantime, Iran said it would allow for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Israel, however, immediately intensified its attacks on Lebanon, jeopardizing the already tenuous ceasefire. More than 300 people were killed in Lebanon by Israeli airstrikes the day after the ceasefire was announced. The terms of the plan are not yet clear but there are some key factors for Iran, says Narges Bajoghli, a professor of Middle East Studies at Johns Hopkins University. “One is that Iran is asking for non-aggression from the United States into the future. It won't take the United States's word for it. It's already been burned by the U.S. multiple times,” Bajoghil tells The Intercept Briefing. “Then the other big thing is sanctions relief.” But “Iran's biggest red line is its sovereignty and independence.”This week on the podcast, Bajoghil speaks to senior Intercept editor Ali Gharib about the path that led the U.S. back to the negotiating table with Iran. This war has proven, Bajoghil says, “both to the decision-makers in Iran, to the Iranian population, and then more importantly to the international world, is that Iran's real deterrence actually doesn't come from a potential nuclear bomb, but it comes from the ability to be able to stop or regulate traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.” She notes, “In many ways, what actually has potentially led to this ceasefire is the fact that Iran is able to create a chokehold over 20 percent of the world's oil and gas trade. That is an extremely powerful weapon that they have in their hands and in many ways can force shifts to happen geopolitically in a much faster way than a nuclear bomb can.”Listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen.Keep our investigations free and fearless at theintercept.com/join.
