I tend to carry the weight of other people's happiness on my shoulders. I want the people I care about to be happy; so much so that I let it weigh me down mentally and even physically. My friend so very wisely brought up a great point: Why is happiness the goal? On today's podcast, we discuss the pursuit of happiness, our behind the scenes filming antics, and Penn shares an update on his life right now. Mom's health has been declining, only a month after the loss of his Dad. Our year has had major highs and major lows with the real potential for more rough lows in the days ahead. We talk through how to balance things we can control in life with the really sucky things we can't control. Tell us what you like, ask a question, or just say hi. Call 323-364-3929. : Penn, Kim, Lola, and Penn Charles Holderness create original music, parodies, and Vlogs for YouTube and Facebook to poke fun of themselves and celebrate the absurdity in circumstances most families face in their day to day life. They published "Christmas Jammies" in December 2013 and life hasn't been the same. Since then, their popular parodies, "All About That Baste", "Baby Got Class," and original music "Snow Day" have received national news coverage. Penn, the Dad, took a chance and left his job as a news anchor to join his wife Kim, the Mom, at their video production and digital marketing company, Greenroom Communications, LLC. Lola and Penn Charles are always happy, respectful and eat all of their vegetables (that last sentence is a lie). When Michiko Wolcott started her consultancy in 2015, it was rare to find someone like her who was interested in exploring the human side of data. Armed with a personal mission to “do data better,” she was determined to successfully blend her roles as a technologist and a humanist to understand why some companies fail to scale.   In her quest to answer that question she taught herself the mechanics of process mapping and lean thinking. And that's when she realized the reason why some companies, despite having access to robust technologies, still don't scale to their full potential.   That reason was people and process.   To be more specific, the lack of a focus on people and process development. In this episode, Michiko recounts the time she reengineered a process for a tech company that helped them reduce the time it took to bring new products to market by 70%. This ability to increase annual throughput and transparency among their team helped this company realize revenue quicker and with minimal downtime or investment.   Explore the possibilities of what business infrastructure (the linking of people, processes, and tools/technologies) can do for your organization. As you'll learn from this scale tale, sometimes the answer is right there in front of you.

First: We've got the context on the biggest headlines of the week: Brittney Griner's guilty verdict, monkeypox updates + how to stay safe, the unexpected Kansas abortion vote outcome, and the killing of Al Qaeda's leader. PS: check out the CDC's FAQ on the monkeypox vaccine. Next: House speaker Nancy Pelosi went on a tour of Asia this week. And her summer travel itinerary got international communities buzzing. We'll give you the DL on why her trip to Taiwan was so controversial and what went down…in 60 seconds.  Also: Has a doctor ever downplayed your symptoms? If so, you're not alone. There's even a name for it: medical gaslighting. And it disproportionately affects women, people of color, geriatric patients and LGBTQ+ people. We talk to two experts who break down what medical gaslighting is, what the signs of it are, and how to advocate for your health at the doctor's office.  Finally: ICYMI, everything is "hot" now. Inspired by pop-culture icons like Paris Hilton and Megan Thee Stallion, people are now calling everything in their lives "hot" – even when it doesn't conform to the word's conventional definition. We speak to a reporter about how the three letter word has recently taken on a new meaning. Plus, a TikTok creator guides us on a "hot girl walk". First: We've got the latest on the economic news of the week. To sort out the Fed's interest rate hike, corporate earnings, and the latest GDP report showing another quarter of shrinkage, we phone a friend and learn what all these money moves mean.  Next: Lawmakers in Indiana introduced a near total abortion ban, kicking off a special legislative session this week. Skimm This spoke to VP Kamala Harris in Indianapolis to learn about the federal government's response since Roe fell — and what we can expect to see going forward.  ICYMI: It's too darn hot.  With travel and supply chain uncertainty, it's more important than ever to adopt a nimble, adaptive approach to events. Garrett Burnett, Head of Global Events at Silicon Labs, says that one of the most important traits of an events professional is adaptability. It's not IF something will go not according to the plan, it's WHAT. An effective events person is ready with plan B and C without skipping a beat.Never has this trait been more important (and more put to the test) than in these early post-Covid times. Between airline staffing shortages, new Covid outbreaks and supply chain issues, there are a lot of external forces impacting events as normal. There's also lots of room for learning, growing and retooling. During the episode, Garrett walks us through SI Labs approach to industry events in 2022-2023, their user conference WorksWith, and innovative approaches to webinars and workshops. You'll hear the outcome of his recent trip to Embedded World in Germany, and how SI Labs is bringing live and interactive elements to their virtual developer conference. We also debate event success metrics, how to extract more value from event content, and basically geek out on all things events -- one of my favorite marketing topics. For show links and more, visit the Content Marketing, Engineered podcast blog https://bit.ly/CMEPodcast Learn more about TREW Marketing https://www.trewmarketing.com Order the book!
