I'm really excited about the music that Hendrick is cooking up, but I'm even more impressed by his mentality and work ethic behind it all. (And even less impressed by my Spanish at the end. This week's ElecSoul moves through soul, jazz, and house, blending past and present. There's music from Marvin Gaye, Braxton Cook, and Ash Lauryn, plus a tribute to Gwen McCrae, who passed away on February 21, 2025. Her impact on soul and dance music is huge, so I've included Doin' It (Joey Negro remix) and Funky Sensation to celebrate her legacy. Closing the show is Mirage by Fouk, which was also the final track of my warm-up set for Todd Edwards at Daya Brewery in Cheltenham. A proper groove to end on. Also, if you're in Gloucestershire, I'll be playing live at Stroud Brewery on 28 February in aid of Sunflowers Suicide Support. Some tickets are still available—come down, support a great cause, and catch some deep grooves. More info here: https://stroudbrewery.com/pages/music-events

Braxton Cook first made a name for himself as a teenager gigging on the Washington DC jazz scene; toured extensively alongside Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah (formerly Christian Scott), and worked in New York where he's played sax with Jon Batiste (as part of the Soul soundtrack), Christian McBride, and others. But all the time, there was another side of Braxton Cook: the smooth R&B crooner. His latest solo album, Who Are You When No One Is Watching mixes jazz, soul, R&B, and some elements of hip hop production. The material also addresses current issues around injustices and racism, while giving a journaling spin to personal experiences. Braxton Cook and his band play some of these new songs and a tune from his 2018 record, No Doubt, in-studio. My guest today is one of the most exciting saxophonists right now in the music world, Braxton Cook. Not only is he an outstanding sax player in the jazz idiom, but he has created his own sound and style combining elements of multiple musical genres. In late 1962, John Coltrane and Duke Ellington went into the studio and created one of the most essential albums in jazz and beyond. Initially paired in an effort to prove Coltrane's commercial viability and conciliate rigid critics of his evolving sound, these titans would prove to do something much more meaningful. Emmy-winning vocalist, saxophonist, composer and producer Braxton Cook joins Milestones to discuss the 60th anniversary of this landmark album. Together they dive into the beauty of intergenerational creativity, Coltrane's approach to a ballad, black male vulnerability and the cultural impact of this one-time collaboration. They also discuss Cook's brand new album Who Are You When No One Is Watching? A distinct synthesis of jazz, R&B, soul, funk, and hip hop, paired with a striking commentary that both honors and celebrates the fullness of black life, Cook's latest drops everywhere today. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

While almost everyone is sharing the most polished and curated versions of themselves, Braxton Cook is asking “Who Are You When No One Is Watching?” Actually, as it turns out, it's a question he's asking of himself, and in a somewhat postmodern and ironic twist, he's doing it quite publicly on his new record, called (surprise!) Who Are You When No One Is Watching? which comes out February 24 on Nettwerk Records. Braxton Cook is an artist of his time - that is, he's hard to define, hard to categorize, highly educated, determined to share his most authentic self and in a constant state of searching.  He's a Juilliard trained jazz saxophone player who has worked with jazz artists Christian Scott, Christian McBride Big Band, Jon Batiste and Marquis Hill as well as more mainstream artists like Solange Knowles and Tom Misch. He's also a deeply sensitive solo artist, singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist who is committed to keeping the saxophone alive in soul music, speaking his own personal truth in his songs, and bridging the gap between jazz, soul, and alternative R&B. In other words, he's a millennial jazz artist. No wonder he opened his 2017 album Somewhere In Between with the song “Millenial Music”. We spoke recently about his trajectory, starting out on the local scene in Washington D.C. as a high school and college student (he spent two years at Georgetown University studying English with a concentration in African American Studies and playing gigs in town before transferring to Juilliard to pursue his jazz education), his evolution from soloist to singer, sideman to leader, and child to parent. We also talked about the value of nostalgia and deep emotional connection in his writing, intentionality in raising children, his determination to make “music with impact”, where he cut his teeth and if that has anything to do with his lifelong fascination with dentistry. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios www.braxtoncook.com

In this episode of The Working Artist Project, Darrian Douglas and Gregory Agid talk to Curtis Nowosad about his career, "jazz fame" and immigration. 100 years after the Harlem Renaissance shook the world, there's a whole new cultural and spiritual awakening in that corner of the jazz world. A key player in galvanizing this fresh and dynamic sense of cultural awareness, drummer/composer Curtis Nowosad has been a major force in The Harlem Sessions, organized by renowned pianist Marc Cary. Having made his home in Harlem since 2013, the Canadian native emerges as a powerful musical force for social justice on a groundbreaking self-titled jazz and blues-driven collection that illuminates past and present history while creating some profound history of its own. Co-produced with Cary, it is his first collection to feature the explosive and intuitive chemistry of his NY-based ensemble that has held court in NYC everywhere from Smalls to The Jazz Standard to The Blue Note and full week residencies at Dizzy's Club at JALC. Curtis laid the foundation for this current release with two previous critically acclaimed collections, his debut The Skeptic & the Cynic and the WCMA-winning and JUNO-nominated Dialectics, which made DownBeat Magazine's “Best of 2015” list. A remix project, titled CNRMXD, will be released in late 2022. Curtis has played in the bands of trumpeter Philip Harper, trombonist Craig Harris, saxophonist and vocalist Braxton Cook and Cary (who both make major contributions to the album) while headlining major jazz festivals in the U.S., Canada and Europe. He has also played with five NEA Jazz Masters: Candido Camero, Dave Liebman, Jimmy Owens, Ron Carter and Kenny Barron. He is an endorser of Canopus Drums.

June 1, 2018 | Bobby Carter -- I learned a few things while watching Tom Misch perform at the Tiny Desk that should've been obvious to a longtime fan like me: He produces beats with a live audience in mind. As much as his drums slap, guitar is the foundation for most of his songs and he showcases a burgeoning talent on the instrument throughout his set. I first caught wind of this UK wunderkind in 2014. Crafting his own instrumental projects and remixing tracks by artists ranging from Busta Rhymes to Lianne La Havas, Misch steadily garnered a dedicated following on SoundCloud. From there, he collaborated with other London artists and released EPs of original music on the platform.   Misch's style doesn't revel in what's going on in pop music today; like a handful of other artists from the UK, his interpretation of hip-hop and R&B is a continuation of what the greats who came before him started. A healthy dose of that inspiration is drawn from the late J. Dilla, while Misch's up-tempo dance numbers align him with the Kaytranadas of the world. In 2016, Misch — still just 21 years old at the time — decided to dabble more in songwriting and explore that soothing timbre of his voice on Reverie, and all of a sudden, his potential rose exponentially.   Misch and the band arrived bright and early to get situated behind the Tiny Desk and rehearse. Misch has said before that he isn't a jazz purist intrinsically, but the way he opens up a guitar solo or jams with saxophonist Braxton Cook, jazz music certainly runs through him. If you haven't heard of Tom Misch before this performance, now's a good time to catch up. Check out his breakthrough album, Geography, as well as his earlier collaborations, then come back and watch his Tiny Desk again for a true appreciation of his growth as an artist. We have a great conversation about goals, self-discipline, fighting perfection, and why success is circumstantial but dependent on planning. In this episode, we'll dig in on... Hello everyone and welcome to the Mental Jiujitsu Podcast. I'm your host, Jonathan (but you can call me Mirth), and I hope you enjoy your stay while you're here. In this episode, I am joined by one of my favorite musicians on the planet, Braxton Cook. Listening to Braxton share the context of the origins of his music-making process, makes it that much more rich and engaging. Music is an art, a craft that is embedded in every culture, and among many other things, is a healing force. Whether you're a musician or not, I hope that you'll enjoy this conversation as Braxton shares his thoughts on what it means to make music in troubling times, using challenge for growth, how his personal relationships have helped him and vice-versa, underrated artists, misconceptions about musicians, and among other things, food and why he dislikes condiments (especially mayo). To listen to Braxton's work or keep up with his latest projects, you can follow him on IG @braxton_cook, go to braxtoncook.com, or look up his music on Spotify and Youtube. I had a phenomenal time recording this episode, and I hope you feel that energy as you listen. Enjoy.

To call Chicago’s Makaya McCraven, just a drummer would be doing the multi-talented musical truth seeker a grave disservice. Over the past few years, McCraven has been refining a production technique that mixes live jam sessions and impromptu performances with radically creative editing to produce some of the most exciting jazz of the modern day. On Universal Beings, an album recorded in four different locations with four distinct groups of musicians at each, McCraven seems to have perfected this technique, and the result is one of the best albums of 2018. Meditative, complex, smooth, and even funky, Universal Beings points to blindingly bright future for not just McCraven, but jazz as a whole.PLUS! Saxaphonist, vocalist, and DMV native Braxton Cook is back with a new album No Doubt, and we’ve got a listen to it’s title track to help you get hip to this remarkable talent! Braxton and I explored the complexities of achieving balance while realizing your wildest dreams. This word, "balance" has become a dirty word for those of us who are self-described super creatives. We often forget how important it is to maintain balance throughout our daily lives due to our insatiable apatite to breathe life into our art. Braxton outlines some of the challenges of creating sounds that reach backward whilst also looking forward, and always acknowledging the present. Today you will get a birds-eye view into the world of one the most prolific creatives of our generation. Connect with Braxton Here https://www.BraxtonCook.com (https://www.BraxtonCook.com)Bio:Braxton Cook is one of this generation's most exciting emerging voices in the jazz world. Not only does he exhibit world-class virtuosity on the alto saxophone but he is also a uniquely talented vocalist and songwriter whose sound blends Jazz, Soul, R&B, and Alternative rock into a fresh new sound he calls Jazz Future Soul. Braxton graduated from The Juilliard School in 2015.Braxton was named a semi-finalist in the 2013 TheloniousMonk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. Since then,Braxton has spent the past 5 years touring the world withGrammy Award-nominated trumpeter Christian Scott,Christian McBride and Marquis Hill among others. During histime as a student at The Juilliard School, Braxton released hisdebut EP Sketch (2014) and sophomore release Braxton CookMeets Brown (2015) launching his solo career and bringinghim festivals and venues across the country. In April of 2017,Braxton released his debut album Somewhere inBetween, which allowed Braxton to tour both nationally andinternationally to the U.K as well as Japan. In less than a year, Somewhere in Between as well asthe Somewhere in Between Remix album has amassed millionsof streams and downloads on Spotify and Apple Music and hasbeen praised by peers, musicians and critics alike. SaintHeron noted Cook's demonstration of “unmatched flexibility bymerging multiple genres into an ardent, passionate and soul-filled project.” In 2017, Fader Magazine called Braxton Cook a“Jazz Marvel” and “Jazz Prodigy.” The 2018 June Issue of EbonyMagazine listed Braxton as Top Five Jazz Artist To Watch(alongside Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington, ButcherBrown, and Kris Bowers). Braxton has worked alongside Solange Knowles and even contracted the horn players involved in her live shows at theGuggenheim, Radio City Music Hall, Afro Punk Festival, Panorama Festival, and Made in America Festival. Most recently, Braxton was featured on Tom Misch's 2018 U.S. Domestic Tour which started with a 2 performances at Coachella and culminated with a very special Tiny Desk performance.Braxton is now working on his next project entitled “No Doubt” which is set to release Fall of 2018.
