Well, it's Fathers Day. For me, that means another trip to the cemetery rather than a trip to visit my dad for dinner. I'm not looking for sympathy. That's just the way it is. I mean. That's life! And this episode's featured artist certainly saw his share of ups and downs during his incredibly influential and talented life. He was also my dad's favorite singer. This is the last of five of his solo albums my dad had. But we have heard sing him with the Harry James and Tommy Dorsey Orchestras as well. So, get ready to hear the man who went from pauper to king, a couple of times, in Volume 233: Frank's Life for Fathers Day. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit wisdomofcrowds.liveWhy do artists try so hard to shock the public? Why is Kanye West singing about Hitler? Why are New York artists dabbling with fascism? The novelist and cultural critic Țara Isabella Burton joins Damir Marusic and Santiago Ramos to discuss these questions and more. Last week, Tara published an essay on Wisdom of Crowds titled “The Point of Pissing People Off.” In it, she tries to figure out whether there is something positive at work in transgression and provocation — something good that comes out of shocking art.All three of our conversationalists agree: Kanye is not really being transgressive. But is there a good version of transgression? Tara suggests that we should think about transgression as a genre, with a certain form and structure, that can either succeed or fail. Damir is skeptical of analyzing transgression, and prefers to think of it as a moment of ecstasy. Santiago wonders if transgression is important for self-knowledge, and something valuable for society as a whole. In the course of the conversation, many transgressive works and artists are discussed, among them: Piss Christ; Madonna; Georges Bataille; the Marquis de Sade; and more.In our bonus section for paid subscribers, Damir talks about the difference between analyzing transgressive art and consuming transgressive art, and why he prefers the latter; Damir discusses the difference between the punk rock of his day, where Reagan was the enemy, and the transgressive art today, which hails Trump as a leader; Tara, Santiago, and Damir trade thoughts about the French Revolution; Santiago tries to get Damir to explain what he means when he talks about “the stuff”; they discuss the question of whether love is as powerful as transgression; Damir talks about his favorite part of the Gospels; and Tara talks about kitsch.Required Reading and Listening:* Tara, “The Point of Pissing People Off” (Wisdom of Crowds).* Tara, Strange Rites: New Religions for a Godless World (Amazon).* Tara, Self-Made: Creating Our Identities from Da Vinci to the Kardashians (Amazon).* Damir's discography from his punk rock days (Discogs).* Damir's music with his band, The Miss (Bandcamp).* Kanye West, “Heil Symphony” (Spotify).* “Kanye West's ‘Heil Hitler' Song & Controversy Explained” (Yahoo! Oh we're back and it's probably the meanest we've been to an album on the show. Stone Sour's self titled debut is an ego-driven butt rock opus designed from start to finish to make you go "hey it's the guy from Slipknot." This album exists for one reason and one reason only; to make Corey Taylor a celebrity. Corey Taylor was upset that he had very little say in the writing process for Slipknot and he was alos upset that the meteoric success of Slipknot didn't come with my real celebrity because of the anonymous nature of Slipknot at the time. To fix this he decided to reform is original bar rock band Stone Sour with the dual goal of getting his name and face out in the public while also racking up radio hits that he could then take back to Slipknot to prove that he can write a successful song. A truly bizarre album that seems more like a marketing play to jump-start Corey Taylor as a brand rather that a pure artistic expression. The vinyl pressing I have here is a Record Store day repressing with alternate album artwork and a bonus live CD (which we did not listen to for this episode). It's a 180 gram pressing that sounds about as clean as you can hope for with a standard quality gatefold jacket. I picked it up from the half-off bin at Horizon Records years ago thinking it would be fun to revisit for nostalgia reasons and see if it holds up to my non-teenage ears. My conclusion? The second album was better. In the news corner today we take aim at the various bad actors, industry insiders, and of course Sharon Osbourne all coming together to tank the career of Irish rap group' KNEECAP for the crime of opposing the Israeli genocide of the Palestinian people during their Coachella performance. All of the usual "keep politics out of music" takes are here and just like always, they're dumb as hell and only seek to stifle speech that dares to question the imperial core. It's a fun one!Instagram - @MBFrecordspodAmanda's IG/TikTok/YouTube - @MothraLunaJason's Discogs - https://www.discogs.com/user/FrequencyShift/collection Theme music by SHADE08 x 80root on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bewQPpTnfgg&list=PPSVHosted by Ausha. Finally. An episode that is less than 2 hours long. It helps that this week we're covering Seizures in Barren Praise by grind/crust band Trap Them. The album is only 10 tracks and 25 minutes total. Compared to the last few episodes this one just BREEZES by! It also helps that Seizures in Barren Praise by Trap Them happens to be one of my favorite albums of all time. Illegally downloading this album from some guy's blogspot page when I was 16 started a snowball effect that would alter how I listened to heavy music going forward which made this a bit of a nostalgia trip for me. We also do our best to parse through the loose plot that makes up the concept of not only this album but all of Trap Them's music up to this point. The vinyl I have here I believe is a second pressing, standard weight on ultra clear vinyl. It comes in a nice enough trifold jacket which shows off the album's full artwork done by Converge vocalist Jacob Bannon. The album sounds perfectly fine. Minimal surface noise but if we're being honest, any surface noise would get lost in the chaos of the album anyway. I picked this up a few years ago used from Pharmacy Records in Greenville which is, for my money, the best place in the upstate to find metal/punk/hardcore records. We're lucky enough to have a few decent record stores here in the upstate but if you're into heavy music at all, Pharmacy is the one you wanna go to. In the news corner this week we check in with our old pal Tim Lambesis and see what his old band members are saying about him. Hint: it's not good. We also check in with what's going on with Death Grips and Andy Morin to see what a new band member is saying about him. Topics Include: Introduction of Lance Barresi, Daniel Hall, and Lenny Kaye. Lenny explains discovering Brown Acid at Other Music in Manhattan. Lenny compares Brown Acid's impact to how Nuggets defined garage rock. Discussion of what makes Brown Acid unique in music archaeology. How Jac Holzman gave Lenny the original idea for Nuggets. Daniel and Lance never expected Brown Acid to reach 20 volumes. Track-by-track discussion of Brown Acid Volume 20 begins. AfterFlash's "Cookbook" was originally a B-side. 500 copies was typical minimum pressing quantity in the early 70s. Lenny mentions pressing 1500 copies of Patti Smith's first single. Most Brown Acid records didn't come with picture sleeves. Discussion of Polvo, the first Mexican band on Brown Acid. Other international acts include bands from Australia, Sweden, UK, Canada. Three primary regions for Brown Acid music: Youngstown, Detroit, Texas. Osage Lute from Missouri is Lance's hometown connection. Surprising connection: Banana Bros member was father of Permanent Records performer. Many Brown Acid discoveries happen through impossible coincidences. A horror movie soundtrack led to discovering one Brown Acid track. B-sides often better fit the Brown Acid aesthetic than A-sides. Lance must track down artists for proper licensing for each song. Some negotiations take years to complete. Nick Townsend credited for consistent audio mastering across compilations. RTI pressing plant provides consistent quality for Brown Acid vinyl. This week we're talking about probably the most consequential album in Nine Inch Nails' history. The Downward Spiral was a monumental success, widely considered to be a masterpiece. The Fragile was largely panned as being too bloated and self-indulgent (even if it is their best album imo). After that Trent Reznor took a full 6 years to produce an album and it needed to be a hit. With Teeth is a sharp, focused, lean product compared to The Fragile, and because of that was a massive success spawning many of their biggest hits. If you're around our age and just a casual listener, most of the NIN songs you know are probably from this album. In the news corner this week we cover a viral tiktok of some white kids being obnoxious during a rap concert. This week we discuss the 6th full length album from one of my favorite bands since my high school days. Revocation's Great is our Sin is a great album that somehow still manages to be somewhat underwhelming? We talk about how having a such a consistent catalog and album release schedule can actually hurt the final product even if the final product is actually very good. We also do our best to try and answer the question of what hyper specific type of extreme metal Revocation is. Too thrashy to be death metal. Too death metal to be thrash. Too riff focused to be progressive. Too groovy to be technical death metal. Who knows. Also this week in the news corner we do our best to go over the case of Oceano and the Stolen Poster Art as well as give you a sneak peak and early review of the next Clipping album which gets released March 14th but we got an advanced copy by preordering the album. For Shane's next pick of an album that has "been around awhile" he selects the iconic debut "Ten" by grunge legends, Pearl Jam. Even with Trevor's Seattle roots, and Shane's incessant teasing about being him being old, Trevor and Shane were too young to remember the grunge movement while it was happening. Nonetheless, these songs were and continue to be pervasive both in their lives and in the historical backdrop of rock music in general. Though Trevor didn't own this album growing up, and Shane may have only had a Napster copy, songs from this album were played on friend's older siblings boom boxes and '87 trans ams in the background of both their coming of age years. For all of these reasons, a wish for a vinyl copy made it's way onto Trevor's Discogs list years ago and finally into his hands this month as album number 2 of 3 in a gift box from Shane as he revealed his pick to Trevor. Trevor and Shane have fun breaking down each track, analyzing where Pearl Jam sits within rock's history, and attempting to define what the term "grunge" really means as elusive as it may be.  __________________________________________________________________________________ HOW TO CONNECT WITH ALBUM DIVERS: *You can submit your questions or comments about this episode or anything else on your mind here via our text line at: (502) 792-8080 *Leave us an audio message here: https://www.speakpipe.com/AlbumDivers We promise to respond and may even feature your thoughts on a future episode.  *Follow us on Facebook and Instagram at Album Divers *Email us at Albumdiverspodcast@gmail.com *Please subscribe and review wherever you get your podcasts!

Congratulations to the Ohio State Buckeye football team for winning their ninth national championship.  If you grew up in Ohio, especially in the 1960s and 70s, you were probably an OSU fan no matter where you ended up going to college in the state. My parents certainly were and they instilled the love of Buckeye football on us as well. During the early 1970s, the Bucks' offense featured a back who is still the only two-time winner of the Heisman Trophy, given to the country's best player each year. Archie Griffin. But we're here to listen to one of those albums that my dad collected over the years more for what's on it than to really listen to it. In fact it doesn't look like he did much playing of this one at all. This record recaps in great detail the 1974 season which ended in a Rose Bowl loss to USC for the national championship. You are going to hear some very familiar names if you are an older college football fan. And I'm going to do something different. I'm going to play the whole album with only one interruption at the end of side one. Each side is 45 minutes long. My dad seemed to have an album for every occasion.  I can't tell you how appropriate the timing is to play this record for you. Oh wait…yes I can…and will. This is truly in the vein of “the more things change the more they stay the same.” And it's all portrayed using some of the main characters of an all time classic movie. Tomorrow the United States of America swears in its 47th president, who, of course, was also the 45th president. We will not be making any commentary on the results of the most recent election itself, but we will be reflecting on many similarities of current events to what you are about to hear. So, get ready to listen to a comedy recording performed right about the time Richard Nixon was getting elected as the 37th president 53 years ago in Volume 212: Inauguration Italian Style. I've mentioned this a few times on this show. The Latin beat was extremely popular when my dad was a teenager and beyond. This record is a combination of taking that Latin beat, this time from a specific country, and arranging it with a plush orchestra. The orchestra conductor who arranged this music was considered the leader in a genre that infiltrated hundreds of radio stations in the 1960s. It's still a term widely used to describe this sound. So get ready to hear the captain of the easy listening movement in Volume 211: Percy's Cuba. Welcome to season five. We start out 2025 with a trumpet player you've heard twice before. This is the last of his records in my dad's collection. When I first came across him, 165 episodes ago, I realized quickly that I had been missing out on listening to another great trumpet player in my youth. His previous episodes are on my play-often list. The arrangements on this record call for his playing to be smooth and lyrical, but we know he had a famous solo that was brash and beautiful. So, get ready to hear from a musician who was the jokester of the Cab Calloway orchestra for over a decade in Volume 210: Jonah Style. Ending the year with a number of my favorite purchases this past year. Maybe one or two of these I actually "dug" up somewhere - the Dick Drew Trio was something I pulled out from deep under other record racks in a store in Las Vegas last May, for instance, but I also bought several of these via Discogs. Record collecting continues to change in ways that make it less familiar to me - many records are now status symbols for wealthy people to show off rather than listen to, when previously they were "status" symbols for many of us in terms of our digging commitment or record knowledge. Actual "digging" for records isn't something I've had as much time for, but still what I love. But shout out to the amazing dealers who are out there with the rusty shovels every week, finding these gold nuggets for the rest of us! And huge, huge thank you to all the people tuning into the podcast - you are massively appreciated! Tracklist: Raffy Bushman, Latin Tempo, Sambalanco Trio, Dick Drew Trio, Masaru Imada Trio, Milcho Leviev, Frank Cunimondo Trio, Morning Sky, Jazzbois, Aquila, Johnny Costa, Billy Harper Quintet

Ever had a terrible experience with an online record buyer? A guy (or gal) that was simply the WORST to deal with? Put on a warm fire, sit back in a good chair, pour a beverage of choice and listen as Arnaldo (Fidelios_Frequency) shares a tale following the latest SURFACE NOISE (A-Side) that would irritate any person trying to sell records. Following some discussion on the latest Rhino Hi-Fi release of The Stooges (self titled debut), another crack in the case is made when it's discovered that the buyer has now listed his own copy of Arnaldo's record for sale on his Discogs store. Is it a "switcheroo" scenario? Is there flim-flam afoot? I began the Pullin from the Stacks podcast just over 10 years ago, publishing my first episode on October 19, 2014. The name is from the classic Digable Planets cut "Pacifics," a song which has a lot of meaning to me. I think I actually messed up and called it "Pullin from the Crates" for that first episode. The first record I played was a cover of Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" by the Jazz Piano Quartet. The first record I play on this episode is a different "Maiden Voyage" cover, this time by the Dalton Jazz Ensemble, a school band record I found at Recollect Records in Denver years ago. One of my favorite songs, I still search out any version I can. The next record is the first record I ever put on my Discogs "want list," Michael Sardaby's "Gail," after hearing a soundclip on Youtube one day. Even back then it was going for more money than I'd ever spent on a piece of wax. A few years later, I sold my old copy of Eminem's first 12" for a couple hundred, and immediately went to see if there were any copies of "Gail" available at the same price - and there were! I feel so lucky to have snagged one. The next record is from one of my favorite jazz compilations, this one out of Hungary in the early 70s. I highly recommend it, the whole record is gorgeous, it's called "Modern Jazz Anthology X" and folks are sleeping on it! Staying in the same part of the world, I was introduced to Romanian jazz legend Johnny Cretu Raducanu after hearing a few Electrecord releases he had played on. The cover of this 10" and his own cover of Charles Mingus's "Haitian Fight Song" drove me to track down a copy online. The whole record is stunning. Speaking of stunning it is hard to find words to describe the beauty of this masterpiece by Winston Mankunku Ngozi, often referred to as South Africa's John Coltrane. It is a desert island record. The following tune, from the Roy Haynes Trio, is one I heard on Karriem Riggins masterful mix, "Music Kaleidoscope," and had to track down. I found it one weekend in a super random record store deep in Long Island. The Chucho Valdes represents my love of Cuban jazz; while I didn't find this record during my time in Havana, I did get hip to Mr. Valdes and months afterword dug this out of a crate on the floor under a table at the WMFU record fair. The Milton Banana cut I play here is from the first record of his I bought, I think at Human Head back in the day. He's killing it on the drums!! I don't remember when I first heard this RF 45 - maybe Junior played it? - but it's a gem, had to track one down. And Green Caterpillar man...I first heard this when Rev Shines played it YEARS ago on KBOO during Jumbo's "Beat Jeopardy" show. I remember being like "wtf is this?!?!?" - took many years to find a copy. I bought this off a dude in Colorado on Amazon.com in like 2015 for about $80. Clean. No regrets on that. The Soul Surfers cut here is just crazy to me, I think someone posted it on IG and I took notice. And finally, this beautiful cover of Kendrick Lamar by my guy Sly 5th Ave released by my people DJ Center and Footlong Development is a stone cold classic. I can't count all the DJ gigs I end with this 45 or all the people coming up to the turntables to see what it is. This is not the end of the podcast. There will be more episodes, though probably less often, as has been the case for much of 2024. Hoping to get back on a schedule of 1-2 episodes a month, possibly with some special guests. Speaking of guests, I want to thank everyone who's contributed a guest set these past ten years! Alex Stange, DO77, Duiji Mshinda, John Morrison, DJ Center, J. Rawls, Bruce Phillips, Evolve-One, LateBloomer and dflush, Daniel Littlewood, the DadBodRapPod, and Waffles Hidalgo. Much respect! And the biggest thank you goes out to everyone who's tuned in once or a hundred times, downloaded, subscribed, told their friends, or talked shit. It's all appreciated.

This week's crop of actor-musician hyphenates got their thespian starts in films of the 1980s: Corey Feldman, Keanu Reeves (Dogstar), Kevin Bacon (the Bacon Brothers), and Kiefer Sutherland. Copyright-compliant Gin Blossoms tracks and workout-cooldown music prompted thoughts about perfectly good outdoor-restaurant entertainment, the artistic practice that capitalism tries to stifle, and whether pretty boys want to be told they're smart (and vice versa).
