This conversation, celebrating the work of both artists, takes place on the occasion of Theory of Colours, our solo exhibition by Sugimoto at Galerie Marian Goodman. The conversation was recorded this Spring at the Enoura Observatory, Japan, which is part of the Odawara Art Foundation.

Zara StanhopeCuratorial ManagerAsian and Pacific Art As a curator practising within institutions and independently Zara Stanhope focuses on expanding engagement with contemporary art across the Global South. She is currently the Lead Curator for Post hoc by Dane Mitchell, New Zealand’s pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale. Currently Curatorial Manager, Asian and Pacific Art at Queensland Art Gallery|Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), Stanhope is the lead curator on the 10th Asia Pacific Triennial (APT) for 2021 and led the 9th Asia Pacific Triennial in 2018. Artist Hiroshi Sugimoto recently expanded his work to include traditional Japanese performing arts such as "bunraku," or puppet theater, through film. Most recently, Sugimoto lent his vision to the arrangement, direction, and stage design of an adaptation of famed bunraku play, "The Love Suicide at Sonezaki (Sonezaki Shinju)", a 1703 work by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. The program begins with a screening of this monumental project, followed by a conversation between the artist and "Phantoms of Asia" guest curator Mami Kataoka.
