Why Artist Websites Still Matter and How to Make Yours Work Harder

Extraordinary Creatives

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 26, 2026 10:43

Despite what we're told, websites are not obsolete. Curators still look at them. Gallerists still look at them. Collectors still look at them. Commissioners still look at them.  Quietly. Carefully. Often before they ever contact you. Your website is where people go when they're deciding whether to take you seriously. Social media shows momentum. Websites show coherence. If your website feels overwhelming, messy, neglected, or like a project you keep putting off, that doesn't mean you're behind. It usually means you've skipped a step.   Most artists jump straight to design. Templates. Platforms. Fonts. Colours. And they do it before they've made the harder, quieter decisions. What actually belongs on here? What am I ready to stand behind? What story am I telling now, not five years ago?  So, today´s episode isn't about redesigning your website. It's about preparing for it.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Artist websites still matter - curators, gallerists, commissioners, and collectors actually use them.  Your website isn't dead. It's quietly doing its job when the right people are paying attention. Your website is not a performance space, but a catalogue of your strongest thinking. It is not an archive. This is a selection of your best work - If someone only ever saw this work, they should understand the kind of artist you are. I don't want anyone landing on your site and thinking, well, now what? So, decide before you design how people can connect with you. This episode is about deciding what needs to be included on your site. The next one is about shaping. BEST MOMENTS “Ask yourself something important - if someone only saw these pieces, would they understand what kind of artist I am?” “Have a portrait image of yourself, ideally in your studio or somewhere that feels human. Smiley helps, warm helps, approachable helps. People want to know who they're connecting with. They don't need mystery here.” “A blank contact page with just an email address or an Instagram handle doesn't feel welcoming. It feels like a closed door.” PODCAST HOST BIO With over 35 years in the art world, Ceri has worked closely with leading artists and arts professionals, managed public and private galleries and charities, and curated more than 250 exhibitions and events. Saturday Mornings Show host Glenn van Zutphen and co-host Neil Humphreys step into a world where insects tower over us. Joining us in the studio are Honor Harger, Vice President of the ArtScience Museum, and Foo Maosheng, Curator of the Cryogenic Collection and Insecta Senior Scientific Officer at the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum. They take us inside Insects: "Microsculptures Magnified", ArtScience Museum’s first major exhibition of the year and the Southeast Asian debut of award‑winning photographer Levon Biss. Thirty seven magnification portraits created in collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History, the exhibition transform beetles, flies, wasps, and other tiny creatures into monumental artworks up to seven feet tall. Colours, textures, and anatomical structures invisible to the naked eye are revealed in astonishing detail. Beyond the art, the exhibition invites visitors to dig deeper into the natural world through interactive displays, real specimens, and behind‑the‑scenes insights into Biss’ meticulous photographic process. Maosheng shares how Singapore’s own insect biodiversity—often misunderstood or dismissed as “pests”—plays essential roles in our ecosystems, and how public education can help shift perceptions and even overcome fears.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Australia Day Weekend 2026 saw the coming together of many INXS fans and patrons of this show for a special commemoration of what would have been Michael Hutchence's 66th birthday. It was a fantastic bus trip commencing from the iconic Northern Beaches in Sydney.  Attendees were greeted with a video acknowledgment from the sax god Kirk Pengilly and recent podcast guest Gary Grant (Former Tour Manager). We proceeded to famous INXS landmarks such as Clontarf Beach (the "Stay Young" video landmark), a Brookvale Industrial building where they rehearsed and gigged in 1979 and the Intercontinental Hotel where we lost Michael. Later that night, it went straight to the Dee Why RSL for the fantastic Don't Change The Ultimate INXS Tribute Show gig, in front of over 650+ passionate, proud and energetic fans to witness 30 blistering tracks, including one Midnight Oil song paying tribute to the recent passing of drummer Rob Hirst. With the DC Boys paying homage to the 40th anniversary of Listen Like Thieves, the band proceeded to play the entire album plus 19 other songs from Underneath the Colours through to the X album. Big shoutout to all those who contributed and won their respective raffle prizes, and to all those who contributed to a great weekend and Bee's tireless efforts. Finally, with a chunky news section catching up on fascinating INXS updates, it's also an opportunity to share some major changes to our podcast.  You'll need to stay tuned until the “final wrap” to find out. Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. In this episode (Part I of a 4-part series edited down from a 5 1/2 hour interview), Lenny Waronker takes a deep-dive stroll along with host Dave Gebroe through his entire career, with priceless commentary and stories peeled off along the way. Legendary producer and Warner Brothers studio head Lenny Waronker is a record producer and music industry executive. As the president of Warner Brothers Records, and later, as the co-founder and co-chair of DreamWorks Records, Waronker was noted for his commitment to artists and his belief that "music, not money, was still number one." In 2025, Waronker was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the Ahmet Ertegun Award category for non-performing industry professionals.  Part 2 focuses on the first album Lenny ever produced, Van Dyke Parks' legendary debut LP Song Cycle. Parts 2 & 3 are an absolute dream come true for fans of this record. Here are just a few of the many things that Lenny discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast: The myriad of influences that made up the cultural stew that was Song Cycle; The mind frame of boundless largesse and expense that went into the making of the record; The real reason why Van Dyke covered Donovan's “Colours”, and the reason he used an alias when it was released as a single; Lenny's dalliance with speed, and what it did for him at the time that he otherwise had difficulty doing; Van Dyke's need to obfuscate his own voice on a record so dependent on being able to understand its lyrical virtuosity; The current state of Lenny & Van Dyke's friendship; And an in-depth deep dive on every song off Side One of Song Cycle. It's often said that colour preferences are simply a matter of personal taste, but actually some have been backed up by science, especially in the field of art history. For the last two centuries, it has been customary in art and design to come up with colour combinations based on what is known the colour wheel. It's a visual representation of the spectrum of colors, organized in a circular format. This wheel divides colours into primary: red, blue, and yellow, secondary: green, orange, and purple, and tertiary colors, creating a harmonious spectrum. But what is it? Where does it come from? What's the point of it? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! One thing I'm aware of in myself and others is a shortening attention span and fierce competition for our attention with the sheer amount of information we have to process. If ever there was “it was never like this in the good old days” moment, here you are. As an aside, I actually heard that screenwriters are being told by production companies, distributors or whatever that they need to write scripts that assume the viewer will also be scrolling on their phone whilst watching their show. And like most things in the world today, it feels like an overwhelming problem to solve – and I think it is a problem – but we can all do our bit to try and reign in the relentless assault on our behaviours and art definitely helps. I even try to do it with the way I write my zine – deliberately scruffy and distressed so readers can't just have a cursory flick through it. I mean it's more layered than that, but you get my point. So…..here's the link – as tenuous as ever! - to my guest, Mélanie Pain, whom you'll of course know through her incredible work with Nouvelle Vague and her equally brilliant solo work.  Mélanie has just released her 4th solo album called How and Why and the final single that she released prior to the album launch is called Dreamloop and the song in its own right is truly beautiful, hypnotic and very unhurried. When you listen to the song with the video, you are transported into a world where the ordinary is anything but ordinary and it acquires implications through the camera loops and repeated scenes.  It demands you take your time and immerse yourself in what feels like a William Eggleston pastiche through a saturated looking glass. Sit back and let your attention span heal. The whole album is wonderful – enigmatic, sometimes optimistic, sometimes forlorn and always giving space for reflection. Look no further than Colours in the Dark – it is just sublime.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. One of the hallmarks of mokuhanga is building a strong foundation grounded in tradition. By studying deeply and making work informed by those who came before us, today's mokuhanga printmakers help carry this beautiful tradition forward.   On this episode of The Unfinished Print, a mokuhanga podcast, I speak with Roslyn Kean, a mokuhanga printmaker who is continuing the tradition of mokuhanga while developing her own unique perspective. Roslyn's work is a wonderful example of how mokuhanga can be both rooted in tradition and open to exploration.   Roslyn and I talk about her studies with Tōshi Yoshida and her time in Japan. We discuss her perspective on mokuhanga as a medium, her baren making, and how Australia has become an important place for printmakers, including the positive impact of diversity  on Australian printmaking. Roslyn also shares insights into her process, from dampening paper and papermaking to the skill and care involved in handmade work, as well as how to source tools and equipment for making mokuhanga.   Roslyn Kean - website, Instagram   More notes to be added soon.     © Popular Wheat Productions logo designed and produced by Douglas Batchelor and André Zadorozny  Introduction music while working - Stormy Weather from The Oscar Peterson Trio Plays The Standards (2016) Musical Concepts Disclaimer: Please do not reproduce or use anything from this podcast without shooting me an email and getting my express written or verbal consent. We start this episode by giving an update on 3I/Atlas and what we may be able to see from it within the next few days. We then turn our attention to the US; where there's flooding in Washington, the House just bipartisanly passed an annual $900 billion defense budget, and Florida just listed CAIR as a terrorist support group. We then shift down south to discuss the latest with Venezuela, the Nobel prize recipient that the media wont talk about, and the oil tanker seized by American forces. Speaking of oil, we then shift over to Iraq, where American oil companies have been invited to pick up where the Russian oil companies left off after the Iraqi government kicked them out of the country. Sticking on the middle east, we give an update on Gaza and the situation there, before moving North to talk about the "Raise the Colours" movement that has mobilized to France to assault refugees trying to make their way across the English channel to "seek assylum". We then shift east to the Russian pilots that launched themselves into a concrete hangar roof by ejecting themselves out of a plane...while it was parked inside the hangar. A top secret NATO plan has been revealed, and members have been planning to launch an 800,000 strong offensive against Russia if the war continues westward. Speaking of, Trumps 28 point plan has now been reduced to a 20 point plan, but Putin still doesn't seem willing to come to the negotiation talks. WE continue to the far East, where Japan has had two massive earthquakes rock the country, as well as having Chinese fighter jets lock on to Jpanese air assets over international waters. Next we travel south and discuss the Thailand Cambodia border dispute and how it has reignited in a massive number of scurmishes all along the border. In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery interviews acclaimed Alberta poet Rayanne Haines about her book, What Kind of Daughter (Frontenac House Press, 2024).  What Kind of Daughter? is a poetic memoir by Rayanne Haines that considers identity and gender expectations while exploring the public perception of the space between the spaces we inhabit during periods of grieving, whether that grieving is based in loss of self or the loss of another. In this hybrid collection of poetry and essay, Haines reflects on her life growing up in rural Alberta, and considers the loss of her mother to cancer while asking questions such as how do we steer through holding patterns of almost grief, how do we navigate the terrain of discovery, how do we journey through the burden of care? In, What Kind of Daughter? Haines reflects on the choices women are asked to make and challenges readers to reflect on the way we value, devalue, or simply exist within the spaces of gender and grief. About Rayanne Haines: Rayanne Haines (she/her) is an award-winning hybrid author and pushcart nominated poet as well as a cultural producer of films, stage shows, and panels. Rayanne has penned three poetry collections – The Stories in My Skin (2013), Stained with the Colours of Sunday Morning (Inanna, 2017), and Tell The Birds Your Body Is Not A Gun (Frontenac, 2021) which won the 2022 Stephan G. Stephansson, Alberta Literary Award for Poetry as well as being shortlisted for both the BPAA Robert Kroetsch Award for Poetry, and the National ReLit Award for Poetry. She hosts the literary podcast Crow Reads, is the president for the League of Canadian Poets, and is an Assistant Professor in Arts and Cultural Management at MacEwan University. Imagine if you were listening to an opera or a Taylor Swift concert, and as the lights in the auditorium dimmed, the music was accompanied by a rainbow of colours only you could see. Perhaps while listening to your friends talking, you simultaneously experience a smorgasbord of tastes, with different words evoking different flavours, maybe a delicious ice cream, or something as disgusting as ear wax... This merging of the senses is known as synaesthesia, and it's the rich research world of neuropsychologist Professor Julia Simner. Julia runs the Multisense lab at the University of Sussex and has pioneered research into understanding how special brains process our sensory world in special ways. In the studio she tests Jim to see if he might be a synaesthete or have aphantasia, which is the inability to view images in the mind's eye. The results are surprising. Julia's discovered links to autism, and to different personality types, as well as a number of previously unknown sensory differences. She describes her career and her life as a series of swerves, or sliding door moments, that have led her to study the subject and the people she's passionate about. She says that the more she looks for these unusual traits in us the more she finds.Presenter Jim Al-Khalili Producer Geraldine Fitzgerald Executive Producer Alexandra Feachem

Anyone in a band will tell you it's like being in a family — a dysfunctional family. But somehow, against all odds, the Canadian rock band Yukon Blonde has managed to stay together for nearly 20 years. On their new record, “Friendship & Rock 'n' Roll,” they celebrate the love and music that's kept them together all this time. Jeff Innes and James Younger of Yukon Blonde join Tom Power to talk about the album and why they find it so grounding to be in a band. Plus, they set up a new song called “Colours of My Dreams.”

Flags, faith and identity: Christianity in a Changing Britain

In September the ‘Unite the Kingdom' rally, organised by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, drew many thousands of people to London. Advertised as the UK's biggest ‘Free Speech Festival', speakers made calls to reaffirm Britain's Christian foundations. Many held wooden crosses and flags with Christian slogans, and the crowds were led in reciting the Lord's Prayer. In response to the march, a group of Church of England bishops and senior clergy joined leaders from across denominations to write a letter condemning the “co-opting or corrupting” of the Christian faith and symbols to exclude others. The letter said that ‘communities felt anxious, unsettled and even threatened by aspects of the march.'Meanwhile operation ‘Raise the Colours', a campaign to cover Britain in flags, has seen St. George's flags appear on lamp posts across England. Some see flying the flag as patriotism, while others are concerned and say the movement is underpinned by far-right nationalists.Today we'll explore the issues. Why is it different to fly a Welsh Flag or a St. George's Cross? What is the difference between patriotism and nationalism? In what way was the ‘Unite the Kingdom' march unsettling and exclusionary to others? Delyth Liddell is joined by Reverend Rhys Llwyd, leader of a Welsh speaking Baptist Church in Caernarfon, North Wales. The Rt Rev Philip North, Bishop of Blackburn who has recently written an article arguing that the flying of flags is a cry from long neglected communities. Suzanne Philpott lives near Swansea. She attended the ‘Unite the Kingdom' rally in September and is a Christian. Ross Hendry is from Llanelli and is the CEO of Christian Action Research and Education. He was a joint signatory of the letter “Do not ‘co-opt' the cross to divide."

Then, remaining in the UK, we meet Pastor David Perry, a self-confessed experiencer who has interacted with both the supernatural and the paranormal since being a child. He saw a physical silver disc in the sky while at school with other children in the school yard. But his greatest interaction with realms beyond was in the summer of 1976, through repeated encounters with balls of light in various colours, who he believes were trying to enrich his Horizons.More information on this episode on the podcast website:https://ufochroniclespodcast.com/ep-171-mysterious-morning-summer-of-1976/Want to share your encounter on the show?Email: UFOChronicles@gmail.comOr Fill out Guest Form:https://forms.gle/uGQ8PTVRkcjy4nxS7Podcast Merchandise:https://www.teepublic.com/user/ufo-chronicles-podcastHelp Support UFO CHRONICLES by becoming a Patron:https://patreon.com/UFOChroniclespodcastX: https://twitter.com/UFOchronpodcastThank you for listening!Like share and subscribe it really helps me when people share the show on social media, it means we can reach more people and more witnesses and without your amazing support, it wouldn't be possible.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/ufo-chronicles-podcast--3395068/support.
