One of the hallmarks of mokuhanga is building a strong foundation grounded in tradition. By studying deeply and making work informed by those who came before us, today's mokuhanga printmakers help carry this beautiful tradition forward.   On this episode of The Unfinished Print, a mokuhanga podcast, I speak with Roslyn Kean, a mokuhanga printmaker who is continuing the tradition of mokuhanga while developing her own unique perspective. Roslyn's work is a wonderful example of how mokuhanga can be both rooted in tradition and open to exploration.   Roslyn and I talk about her studies with Tōshi Yoshida and her time in Japan. We discuss her perspective on mokuhanga as a medium, her baren making, and how Australia has become an important place for printmakers, including the positive impact of diversity  on Australian printmaking. Roslyn also shares insights into her process, from dampening paper and papermaking to the skill and care involved in handmade work, as well as how to source tools and equipment for making mokuhanga.   Roslyn Kean - website, Instagram   More notes to be added soon.     © Popular Wheat Productions logo designed and produced by Douglas Batchelor and André Zadorozny  Introduction music while working - Stormy Weather from The Oscar Peterson Trio Plays The Standards (2016) Musical Concepts Disclaimer: Please do not reproduce or use anything from this podcast without shooting me an email and getting my express written or verbal consent. ► Exposition I Dreamt of you in Colours, d'Otobong Nkanga au Musée d'art moderne de Paris jusqu'au 22 février 2026.

We start this episode by giving an update on 3I/Atlas and what we may be able to see from it within the next few days. We then turn our attention to the US; where there's flooding in Washington, the House just bipartisanly passed an annual $900 billion defense budget, and Florida just listed CAIR as a terrorist support group. We then shift down south to discuss the latest with Venezuela, the Nobel prize recipient that the media wont talk about, and the oil tanker seized by American forces. Speaking of oil, we then shift over to Iraq, where American oil companies have been invited to pick up where the Russian oil companies left off after the Iraqi government kicked them out of the country. Sticking on the middle east, we give an update on Gaza and the situation there, before moving North to talk about the "Raise the Colours" movement that has mobilized to France to assault refugees trying to make their way across the English channel to "seek assylum". We then shift east to the Russian pilots that launched themselves into a concrete hangar roof by ejecting themselves out of a plane...while it was parked inside the hangar. A top secret NATO plan has been revealed, and members have been planning to launch an 800,000 strong offensive against Russia if the war continues westward. Speaking of, Trumps 28 point plan has now been reduced to a 20 point plan, but Putin still doesn't seem willing to come to the negotiation talks. WE continue to the far East, where Japan has had two massive earthquakes rock the country, as well as having Chinese fighter jets lock on to Jpanese air assets over international waters. Next we travel south and discuss the Thailand Cambodia border dispute and how it has reignited in a massive number of scurmishes all along the border. We finish this episode by talking about Australias new federal law that blocks anyone under the age of 16 from ALL social media platforms! To join in on the conversations ext week, go to patreon.com/CajunKnightBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/cult-of-conspiracy--5700337/support.

In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery interviews acclaimed Alberta poet Rayanne Haines about her book, What Kind of Daughter (Frontenac House Press, 2024).  What Kind of Daughter? is a poetic memoir by Rayanne Haines that considers identity and gender expectations while exploring the public perception of the space between the spaces we inhabit during periods of grieving, whether that grieving is based in loss of self or the loss of another. In this hybrid collection of poetry and essay, Haines reflects on her life growing up in rural Alberta, and considers the loss of her mother to cancer while asking questions such as how do we steer through holding patterns of almost grief, how do we navigate the terrain of discovery, how do we journey through the burden of care? In, What Kind of Daughter? Haines reflects on the choices women are asked to make and challenges readers to reflect on the way we value, devalue, or simply exist within the spaces of gender and grief. About Rayanne Haines: Rayanne Haines (she/her) is an award-winning hybrid author and pushcart nominated poet as well as a cultural producer of films, stage shows, and panels. Imagine if you were listening to an opera or a Taylor Swift concert, and as the lights in the auditorium dimmed, the music was accompanied by a rainbow of colours only you could see. Perhaps while listening to your friends talking, you simultaneously experience a smorgasbord of tastes, with different words evoking different flavours, maybe a delicious ice cream, or something as disgusting as ear wax... This merging of the senses is known as synaesthesia, and it's the rich research world of neuropsychologist Professor Julia Simner. Julia runs the Multisense lab at the University of Sussex and has pioneered research into understanding how special brains process our sensory world in special ways. In the studio she tests Jim to see if he might be a synaesthete or have aphantasia, which is the inability to view images in the mind's eye. The results are surprising. Julia's discovered links to autism, and to different personality types, as well as a number of previously unknown sensory differences. She describes her career and her life as a series of swerves, or sliding door moments, that have led her to study the subject and the people she's passionate about. She says that the more she looks for these unusual traits in us the more she finds.Presenter Jim Al-Khalili Producer Geraldine Fitzgerald Executive Producer Alexandra Feachem

Ruud Kleinpaste: Attractive colours and pollinators

Most gardeners are aware that certain plants appear to be great for pollinators. Pollination is important for the reproduction of plants, and it comes in many different ways. We often just sit and watch the spectacle unfold as we have a cup of tea in front of our shed. Pollination is done through ABIOTIC ways: (wind movements) or through BIOTIC techniques (Mostly insects: bees, flies, butterflies, moths, beetles and birds). It makes sense that early flowering plants rely on early pollinating insects. Dandelions are a good example; they often use small native bees to do the job. By the way, about one-third of New Zealand's plants are wind-pollinated (think grasses and the various plants that cause hayfever). Here's a line-up of all sorts of pollinators in the group of insects. For the flowers pollinated by insects, especially bees, it's interesting to note that they have different colour vision to humans. Blue, green, violet and ultra-violet are the key colours. The blue flowers that will certainly bring in the pollinators are Ageratum, Chatham Island Forget-Me-Not, Cornflower, Delphinium, Echinops, and Eryngium, with standards such as Salvia, Phacelia, Campanula and Tweedia. When birds are getting involved in pollination (just under 10%), you'll find that Tui and Bellbirds are often at the front of the line, with silvereyes waiting for their turn. Kowhai, Flax, Rata species, and special recipients of bird beaks, such as Kaka Beak and Mistletoe are the lure for birds. Bellbird and tui with orange pollen and red flowers While most insects see things in blue, violet, and ultra-violet spectrum, birds see red and yellow. Blackbirds also see red flowers: They love to “cause trouble” in the Feijoa trees with heaps of red flowers by violently ripping the flowers to pieces… The most efficient way to pollinate the crop of feijoas!!! In September the ‘Unite the Kingdom' rally, organised by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, drew many thousands of people to London. Advertised as the UK's biggest ‘Free Speech Festival', speakers made calls to reaffirm Britain's Christian foundations. Many held wooden crosses and flags with Christian slogans, and the crowds were led in reciting the Lord's Prayer. In response to the march, a group of Church of England bishops and senior clergy joined leaders from across denominations to write a letter condemning the “co-opting or corrupting” of the Christian faith and symbols to exclude others. The letter said that ‘communities felt anxious, unsettled and even threatened by aspects of the march.'Meanwhile operation ‘Raise the Colours', a campaign to cover Britain in flags, has seen St. George's flags appear on lamp posts across England. Some see flying the flag as patriotism, while others are concerned and say the movement is underpinned by far-right nationalists.Today we'll explore the issues. Why is it different to fly a Welsh Flag or a St. George's Cross? What is the difference between patriotism and nationalism? In what way was the ‘Unite the Kingdom' march unsettling and exclusionary to others? Delyth Liddell is joined by Reverend Rhys Llwyd, leader of a Welsh speaking Baptist Church in Caernarfon, North Wales. The Rt Rev Philip North, Bishop of Blackburn who has recently written an article arguing that the flying of flags is a cry from long neglected communities. Suzanne Philpott lives near Swansea. She attended the ‘Unite the Kingdom' rally in September and is a Christian. Ross Hendry is from Llanelli and is the CEO of Christian Action Research and Education. He was a joint signatory of the letter “Do not ‘co-opt' the cross to divide."

Chromophobia is a term with Greek origins, referring to the fear of colours. Initially, it was a concept used in biology to describe cells unresponsive to colour, commonly employed in medical examinations. Over time, its use expanded into psychology, particularly in the context of the rejection and fear associated with specific colours. A pathological aversion to colours, or a particular colour, is relatively rare. The fear is often driven by the symbolism a colour carries, rather than the colour itself. Colours can trigger certain hormonal responses that, in turn, lead to psychological reactions. Which colours are people most likely to be afraid of then? And how so ?
