George Mycock of @myo_minds is talking about his SECOND WAVE of research on men, eating disorders, exercise, and muscularity-oriented issues. In a lively discussion, George and I explore how many eating disorder treatment centers' websites and materials are geared toward women and girls, and how that might lead men and boys to feel hesitant to reach out for help, when they desperately need it. He shared how he is training treatment centers and psychiatrist alike on the insidious nature of muscularity-oriented issues and eating disorders in boys and men.  ABOUT GEORGE MYCOCK, MSc George Mycock is a PhD student and the founder of MyoMinds, the mental health organization that works to improve awareness and understanding of exerciser mental health. George's research focuses on muscularity-oriented issues in men, including muscle dysmorphia, disordered eating, and exercise addiction. George also has lived experience with muscularity-oriented issues, which he shares across his work.   Check out a couple of other podcast episodes when George visited Dr. Marianne-Land!   >> When we chatted about George's first wave of research on exercise, eating disorders, & muscularity-oriented issues on Apple or Spotify.   >> When we discussed George's overall focus on muscularity-oriented issues, men, and eating disorders on Apple or Spotify.   George consulted on these issues for the Netflix show Everything Now.   George lives and works out of Malvern, England, in the United Kingdom.   You can contact and follow George through the following links: Website: MyoMinds.com Twitter/X: @myominds Instagram: @myo_minds

In which the Curmudgeons hammer one of the most perplexing "it" bands of the entire 21st Century. Arcade Fire stormed out of Montreal in 2004 with Funeral, a debut album that captured the imagination of throngs of unimaginative indie hipster d-bags. Whereas their fans and a whole bunch of fawning rock critics heard glorious art in all the band's maximal grandiosity, we just heard...noise. Lots of it. Hi pals,  In this week's ep, we have a catch-up about Maggie's travels to China after a little hiatus and what our summer plans are. In pop culture land, two big stories have dominated the entertainment news cycle. We first chat about Matthew Perry's tragic death at just 54. We share our thoughts on the parasocial mourning of his famous character and how he really wanted to be remembered.  Next, Britney Spears' memoir, The Woman In Me has raced to the top of the book charts and Jas has gobbled it up. We share the biggest talking points from the memoir and why Justin Timberlake better watch his back. (Kidding, kinda).  On account of us missing last week's ep, we share two recommendations each. First up is Jas' with Is Taylor Swift Impossible To Critique by Naina Yadav for The Swaddle. We share our thoughts on 1989 TV and her up-level to billionaire status. Maggie also references the new book by Shameless Media, 4AM featuring columns by columnists including your gal, Maggie! Buy it here.  Jas has also been loving The Bear season two on Disney+ (sorry, so late to the party).  Maggie has been watching teen dramedy Netflix show Everything Now and listening to the podcast, Believable: The Coco Berthmann Story about an internet-famous woman who tricked the world into thinking she had cancer. It would be irresponsible and wrong of us to release an episode on celebrity news without us mentioning the most tragic world news of the last month; the Israel/ Palestine conflict. We stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and are holding space for our Muslim and Jewish listeners and friends. Please educate yourself and stay up to date via reputable news sources. Everything! Now!

The Interview: Los Angeles is a hundred suburbs in search of a city, or so it's been said.In his new book about Los Angeles, novelist and nonfiction writer Rosecrans Baldwin—a somewhat recent transplant to Los Angeles from the East Coast—tackles the famous quip and expands on it. His premise in Everything Now: Lessons from the City-State of Los Angeles (MCD/FSG, 2021) is spot-on: “Functionally, aesthetically, mythologically, even technologically, it is an independent territory, defined less by distinct borders than by an aura of autonomy and a sense of unfurling destiny—this is the city-state of Los Angeles,” as a concept. Baldwin spent years reporting on this book before finally finishing it during the pandemic last year. He looks at the city through so many prisms and angles, it's impossible to finish reading Everything Now without acquiring a deep (or deeper) fondness for L.A. The book is an exploration of the city, its people, and its culture. And as stated on the sell copy of the book, in Los Angeles, “you have no better plan that exists to watch the United States' past, and its possible futures play themselves out.” Like Thom Andersen's magnum opus, the documentary film Los Angeles Plays Itself, Everything Now is a deeply researched, and well-argued street-level view of the city—the good, the bad, and the ugly. Baldwin and I caught up this past fall to discuss how his latest book came to be. The Reading:Rosecrans Baldwin reads from his latest book, Everything Now: Lessons from the City-State of Los Angeles.Music by Flying Lotus

Are you in a pandemic funk? If you feel like life has been reduced to dragging yourself to the computer every day for endless Zoom meetings, this is the show for you. If pajama pants and an old college t-shirt have become your everyday attire, help is on the way! It's time to do life differently! Join us to learn more! Dr. Camille Jones, aka “Mrs. Doc Jones,” is a well-known therapist in the Washington, DC, area. She is the perfect person to help us get out of the funk we may feel due to the continued monotony of the COVID pandemic. She teaches everyone to approach each new day as an opportunity to embrace wellness.  Show Highlights: How a big part of the population is having a difficult time with the new face of socialization, while introverts are thriving How Dr. Camille's practice and work with couples have changed over the last couple of years How even the way we dress and approach each day have changed as more and more people work from home How getting up and getting dressed is part of the prescription for wellness, along with fresh air, sunlight, and self-care practices Why Dr. Camille teaches black women to stop wearing the “strong black woman badge” that is only stalling us and telling us we never need help Why we need emotional wellness and need to raise our hands when we need rescue How it's OK to depend on Christ and your faith—along with therapy How the “George Floyd effect” has added to emotional stress by making politics an unavoidable conversation and thrusting some black people into unfair leadership positions How the division and inclusion movement is falling short Dr. Camille's other endeavors include being a mediator in family court in divorce situations and promoting workplace wellness and cultural transformation Her book, The Divorced Land of Sam's, and Clinicianfest, a platform for mental health practitioners to help stamp out the stigma about mental wellness Key takeaways from Dr. Camille, Gayle, and Tia:  Take charge of your mental wellness. Get up and get dressed each day. Take time off when needed, and prioritize self-care. Take an emotional wellness inventory of what makes you feel good and brings you joy. Make a list and plan to do at least three of those things right away. Schedule and participate! Check on others and make sure they are OK. Watch for the warning signs of mental health problems. Deeply reported and researched, provocatively argued, and eloquently written, Rosecrans Baldwin's Everything Now approaches the metropolis from unexpected angles, nimbly interleaving his own voice with a chorus of others, from canonical L.A. literature to everyday citizens. Here, Octavia E. Butler and Joan Didion are in conversation with activists and astronauts, vampires and veterans. Baldwin records the stories of countless Angelenos, discovering people both upended and reborn: by disasters natural and economic, following gospels of wealth or self-help or personal destiny. The result is a story of a kaleidoscopic, vibrant nation unto itself―vastly more than its many, many parts. Baldwin's concept of the city-state allows us, finally, to grasp a place―Los Angeles―whose idiosyncrasies both magnify those of America, and are so fully its own. Here, space and time don't quite work the same as they do elsewhere, and contradictions are as stark as southern California's natural environment. Perhaps no better place exists to watch the United States's past, and its possible futures, play themselves out. Welcome to Los Angeles, the Great American City-State. His debut novel, You Lost Me There, was a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice.  Everything Now: Lessons from the City-State of Los Angeles is a provocative, exhilaratingly new understanding of the United States' most confounding metropolis—not just a great city, but a full-blown modern city-state. America is obsessed with Los Angeles. And America has been thinking about Los Angeles all wrong, for decades, on repeat. Los Angeles is not just the place where the American dream hits the Pacific. (It has its own dreams.) Not just the vanishing point of America's western drive. (It has its own compass.) Functionally, aesthetically, mythologically, even technologically, an independent territory, defined less by distinct borders than by an aura of autonomy and a sense of unfurling destiny—this is the city-state of Los Angeles.  Deeply reported and researched, provocatively argued, and eloquently written, Rosecrans Baldwin's Everything Now approaches the metropolis from unexpected angles, nimbly interleaving his own voice with a chorus of others, from canonical L.A. literature to everyday citizens. A few weeks back I recommended the book Everything Now: Lessons from the City-State of Los Angeles by Rosecrans Baldwin for a summer reading list. Having been an admirer of Rosecrans’ writing (especially in his newsletter) I was eager to chat with him about the book on the podcast. He graciously drove across town and we had a great chat in my backyard. We spoke about the many great stories in the book, life in Southern California and he even opened up about his relationship with the brand Patagonia. “What if I hate Los Angeles? Why should I read this book.” That’s the big question for Rosecrans. It’s something we speak about in the podcast but it is worth pointing out again here. If you love L.A. this is a good book for you. If you hate it — there’s likely something for you too. If you are interested in the human stories that bring a place to life then you will enjoy it. All of this thinking about Los Angeles makes me revisit the ongoing N.Y. vs L.A. debate. So much is said about these two cities but it doesn’t seem like many people truly understand either place all that well — myself included. I’ve got a connection to each city, but I’m not really from either and don’t think I’ll ever consider myself a New Yorker or an Angeleno. I only think I know them well enough to know that I’ve only scratched the surface. The book reinforces this theory. One fact I heard during the pandemic about the size of L.A. surprised me. If Los Angeles County was a state it would rank 8th in terms of population. That statistic helped illustrate in my mind just how big L.A. is and how it is often too easily distilled down to one industry or one frequently visited part of town. Everything Now helps to open up these places, and to help us all better understand the people who give them life. The book is unlike what one might expect from a story about a city, no less a story about L.A., but that is one of the reasons it’s so enjoyable. It’s unexpected in a lot of ways, and like L.A., it’s not as easy to characterize as you might think. Hope you enjoy our conversation. Some show notes are below. Rosecrans Baldwin, a novelist and journalist, adds his unique voice in trying to make sense of what he calls the “city-state” of Los Angeles. He talks about L.A. as welcoming but somehow detached from the rest of America. While Baldwin argues that no single story can possibly represent all of L.A., in his new book "Everything Now," he adds to the canon of LA. writers trying to define 5,000 square miles and 88 cities.
