In this Father's Day episode, I had the privilege of sitting down with Alex Fernandez, an educator and father who's been working in Chicago Public Schools for 17 years. As someone who works at my son Diego's school and presented on restorative practices, Alex brought such valuable insights about intentional parenting from the Latino dad perspective. Our conversation really resonated with me, especially as we discussed the challenge of breaking generational cycles while honoring our cultural roots. For detailed show notes, visit vivalamami.com/episode129What You'll Hear:Why "what are you modeling?" is the most important question we can ask ourselves as parentsHow to validate our children's feelings while still maintaining boundariesBalancing traditional Latino values with intentional parenting approaches and handling family criticismWhy therapy and personal growth are essential, plus how modeling accountability changes everythingResources Mentioned:Mistaken Goal ChartLove this episode?

Joe Rogan tries his hardest to take a stand against Trump. Ben riffs. Achy Obejas talks Rogan, Bill Maher and Larry David--nice to know that one of them is not scared of Trump. Then she talks about "Mami, I'm Scared," her gripping essay in Politico which asks the troubling question: How do you break the news to children that the country they love elected a tyrant who might send them to a prison in El Salvador? Also, a word or two about Marco Rubio. And a poll in The Forward reveals 72 percent of Jewish Americans disapprove of Trump's presidency. Achy is a poet, novelist, translator and journalist.

On today's episode I wanted to formally introduce The Mamis Club series of the podcast. The Mami's Club is for all madres—whether you're an entrepreneur, building a career, or a stay-at-home mom—let's talk about navigating the beautiful chaos of motherhood. I want this to be a safe space for real conversations about the struggles, wins, and everyday realities of trying to balance it all. Culturally and beyond, so much about motherhood goes unspoken—but here, I want to be able to share our journeys, support one another, and remind every madre out there: you are not alone. I thought, let me kick it off this series with my own experience so far. I gave birth to my son on July 30th, 2024. That was the day I was inaugurated into The Mami's Club. It was also one of the scariest, dramatic and most chaotic days of life, but it also brought me the most important person in my life. I wanted to share my journey for anyone who can relate and to feel like they're not alone in their experience. I think that's what I appreciate about my generation of mothers and younger, is that we are talking about our pregnancy journeys, birthing experiences and even challenges as mother's. I didn't know that my fairly laid back and smooth sailing pregnancy would lead to a HELLP syndrome diagnosis, emergency c-section and a NICU stay, but that is all a part of my story now. Trigger warning for any Mami's who have experienced anything similar or just had a very different experience than they imagined. Talking about my journey helps, so I feel like sharing this very vulnerable time in my life is helping me heal. I decided to welcome myself back to the podcast from a very long break since last summer, when I was pregnant and dove into motherhood two months earlier than expected. The Mami life has been crazy and even crazier trying to navigate motherhood and entrepreneurship. However, slowly, but surely, I am figuring it out. Since I love to share my personal entrepreneurship journey on the podcast, I thought I would share how I am doing things differently now as a mom. As well as, I want to talk with other moms on the podcast who are also entrepreneurs, navigating their careers or stay-at-home moms now and hear how they are doing it. As women, our life can take a drastic change once you become a mother, so I wanted to introduce The Mami's Club series on the podcast. Where we can talk about navigating the beautiful chaos that is motherhood. Join me in the next episode as I kick it off with my journey into motherhood! This week on Locatora Radio, Diosa and Mala sit down with voice actor, Kathleen Herles. At just seven-years-old, Kathleen voiced Nickelodeon's "Dora The Explorer" and became a cultural phenomenon. In this intimate interview, Kathleen reflects on why she had to let go of the charachter, Dora, why she's ready to reconnect with the character, and her role as "Mami" in the 2024 revival. In this seventh episode of our special 8-episode Balanced Madrehood series, I discuss how aligning your parenting with your core values can transform your motherhood experience from reactive to intentional. As busy mamás juggling careers, households, relationships, and more, it's easy to parent on autopilot - reacting to situations rather than responding based on what truly matters to us. But when we take the time to identify our core values and create a parenting approach that reflects them, we experience more confidence, less guilt, and a stronger sense of purpose. For detailed show notes, visit vivalamami.com/episode120In this episode, you'll learn:What values really are and why they matter so much in parentingA simple exercise to identify your authentic core values (not just what others expect of you)How to translate abstract values into concrete, everyday parenting actionsA 5-minute daily reflection practice that can transform your parenting approachI share specific examples of how values like respect, connection, and resilience can be put into practice through daily parenting decisions, and explain why parenting from your authentic values is transformative not just for your children, but for you too.Feeling overwhelmed by navigating cultural expectations and modern parenting as a Latina mom? In this sixth episode of our special 8-episode Balanced Madrehood series, I share one of the most challenging aspects of modern Latina motherhood: giving ourselves permission to break harmful cultural traditions while still honoring our rich heritage. As Latina moms, we've inherited beautiful traditions that connect us to our roots - but if we're honest, we've also inherited patterns that don't serve us or our children. From "la chancla" discipline and authoritarian parenting to machismo attitudes and the expectation that moms should sacrifice everything for family, how do we honor where we come from while consciously choosing not to carry forward harmful patterns? In this episode, I name specific cycles many of us experienced growing up in Latino households and provide practical strategies for breaking these patterns while maintaining cultural connection. For detailed show notes, visit vivalamami.com/episode119In this episode, you'll hear:The specific harmful patterns many of us experienced (authoritarian parenting, la chancla culture, machismo, martyr mom syndrome, and more)Why breaking cycles doesn't make you any less Latina or connected to your rootsPractical strategies for breaking generational patterns while honoring your heritageHow to handle resistance from family members who don't understand your different approachWhy breaking cycles is actually an act of love for your culture, not a rejection of itResources mentioned:Latinx ParentingJoin the Balanced Madrehood waitlist: vivalamami.com/balanced-madrehoodEpisodes on how to break generational patterns049. In this fifth episode of our special 8-episode Balanced Madrehood series, I dive into what might be the most challenging topic for Latina moms: setting boundaries with family. For many of us, family is everything - our support system, our community, our foundation. But without boundaries, we can't fully show up for the people we love. When we're stretched too thin, resentment builds and our relationships actually suffer.I explore what healthy boundaries actually look like in family relationships (from time and communication boundaries to parenting and financial boundaries), why they're so difficult to establish, and practical strategies for implementing them without the guilt. For detailed show notes, visit vivalamami.com/episode118In This Episode, You'll Hear:The three biggest barriers that keep us from setting boundaries (including the guilt factor!)How to create systems that do the boundary-setting for youOne simple boundary you can implement this week!Remember, loving your familia doesn't mean sacrificing yourself. In this fourth episode of our special 8-episode Balanced Madrehood series, I touch on another crucial challenge modern Latina moms face: reconnecting with who they are outside of motherhood. When we become moms, our identity shifts almost overnight. Between sleep deprivation and the mental load of running a household, it's easy to lose touch with the woman you were before - the parts that had nothing to do with taking care of others. I share my personal experience of going months without engaging in activities that once defined me, like running or even reading a book uninterrupted. In This Episode, You'll Hear:Why reconnecting with your passions isn't just about having fun, it's essential for your wellbeing and identityThe common barriers that keep us from pursuing our interestsPractical strategies for reintroducing your passions into your busy life as a momHow rediscovering yourself actually benefits your family by making you a more present, patient, and joyful mamiRemember, madrehood isn't meant to be an all-consuming identity that erases everything else about who you are. It's meant to be integrated into your full, complex, multifaceted life.Resources Mentioned:Balanced Madrehood waitlist: vivalamami.com/balanced-madrehoodFeeling overwhelmed by navigating cultural expectations and modern parenting as a Latina mom? In this episode, we sit down with the incredibly talented James Martinez (Dexter: Original Sin, House of Cards, Breaking Bad, Love, Victor), who takes us on a deeply personal and inspiring journey through his life and career. He also takes us back to his early days as a teenage impersonator in NYC comedy clubs, long before he found himself on set with Hollywood’s biggest names. We also dive into how James balances marriage, fatherhood, and an intense acting career, plus what it was like working alongside icons like Giancarlo Esposito, Patrick Dempsey, and Christian Slater. And in an exclusive, James gives us a sneak peek at his latest project—a "Freestyle" play with his friend/mentor David Zayas.
