Artists' Retreat Explores the Connection Between Art and Theology "Art is the Way of Beauty. It has a special way of piercing our hearts in order to receive grace," shares Holly Schapker, a Cincinnati artist who has been working closely with Fr. Thomas Flynn, LC, and Called to Create, an initiative established in the Ohio Valley area by artist and educator, Laura Kline, and designed to spiritually nurture Catholic artists and encourage them to use their creative gifts as a means of sharing God's truth and love through their artwork. 7:37 A Digital Project Born During the Pandemic Continues to Grow and Bring Hope The project "M for Mary" is an initiative that the Holy Spirit stirred in Margarita Martinez' heart because of the pandemic. She began by offering formation to the parents of students at the school she was working at in Colombia through Instagram. Little by little, many (thousands) of people began to follow her page, and she realized that the platform could reach many people from different places around the world. 12:05 Yoked to the Sacred Heart Last Friday, the Church celebrated the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Remember that by your Baptism you are bound heart to heart with Jesus. He desires to journey with you through life for his yoke is easy, his burden is light, and you will find rest for your souls.

About Margarita Martinez My first experience of Margarita Martinez was at the Red River Gorge, watching her dance her way up Bohica 5.13b. She ended up falling on it, but I remember her laughing as she fell, and then talking to her later she was as chipper as could be. In this interview, that positive outlook on life and climbing is very apparent. Margarita is originally from Puerto Rico, but moved her in her late teens to be a ballerina, which she did for over a decade. She had to quit dancing because she could no longer travel and raise 3 children. She wanted something to fill the dancing void in her life, and at the age of 34 she found climbing. Since then, she's suffered several heartbreaking injuries and surgeries (broken back, broken ankle, and most recently a serious shoulder issue), but she's persevered and steadily climbed through the grades. Last year, at the age of 58, she sent her first 5.13d in Maple Canyon and has not slowed down since. That was after she was told by a surgeon that she needed to have a shoulder replacement and quit climbing forever. Our good friend, Esther Smith (the PT who's been on the show a couple times) helped her fix her shoulder, and she's now climbing and training harder than ever. Margarita Martinez Interview Details In this interview, Margarita talks about her evolution as a climber, how she trains, and how she does things differently now that she's a little bit older. What We Talked About Training for first 13d at age 58 How she deals with having rheumatoid arthritis How she approaches climbing and training at age 58 What the MaxiPull is and how it helps her endurance Why she weight lifts and what she does Her training/climbing schedule Margarita Martinez Links Margarita's article "15 Truths About Being A Climber" How to Make A Maxi Pull - from Margarita's Facebook page Esther Smith's article on how to Hang Just Right (which Margarita uses) Margarita's shoe insert company (for stinky climbing shoes): www.DryPointe.com
An unusual case here: Margarita Martinez is not the author of Cabot Creamery Cookbook: Simple Wholesome Dishes from America’s Best Dairy Farms (Oxmoor House, 2015). But I’m using this interview to reveal an interesting part of the cookbook business. The Cabot book is a group project, the original idea germinated by a publishing house. The publisher Oxmoor House, a division of Time Home Entertainment, approached Cabot, the cheese-maker which is a co-operative jointly owned by Vermont farmers and pitched the idea of bringing together recipes using Cabot’s famous cheeses. The recipes would be contributed in large part by the farmers who make the cheese. As one of the last steps, Margarita Martinez, a camera-friendly food personality who had hosted a New England food/travel show broadcast on the regions PBS stations, was hired to be the spokesperson for the book. She did contribute two-recipes. What I wanted to get to here was the idea that there are many jobs in the food writing business, some which you might not expect. The interview is an interesting look into a business you might think you know, but about which maybe you still have a bit to learn. This program was brought to you by The Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board. “I’ve always been a fan of Cabot products and their cheese and also the heritage of the cooperative, so I heartily agreed to come onboard and collaborate.” [2:40] —Margarita Martinez on Cutting the Curd “We are a farmer owned coop but we do have pretty high standards what we expect from our farmers, so there’s an application process [to join the Cabot cooperative].” [6:55] —Craig Gile on Cutting the Curd
