George Washington wasn't born a legend – he was forged in fire, frost, and the brutal chaos of a world war he accidentally helped ignite. In this gripping episode, we follow Young Washington from a fatherless Virginia boyhood to the frozen wilderness of the Ohio Valley, where a single musket shot sets empires on a collision course. Experience Washington's disastrous stand at Fort Necessity, his near-mythic survival at Braddock's massacre, and the eerie prophecy that foreshadows his destiny. This episode reveals how hardship, ambition, illness, and sheer providence shaped the stoic young surveyor into the indispensable figure America would one day need. Severe thunderstorm activity is forecasted to traverse a broad corridor from the mid-Mississippi Valley through the Ohio Valley and into the southern Great Lakes, prompting notable concerns regarding potential hazards such as damaging wind gusts, large hail, and isolated tornadoes. As this atmospheric threat persists, Governor Greg Abbott has taken proactive measures by directing the Texas Division of Emergency Management to pre-position state emergency response resources in anticipation of the severe storms targeting northwest and central Texas. Furthermore, the National Interagency Fire Center has reported an alarming number of uncontained wildfires across the nation, emphasizing the need for vigilance in fire-prone areas, particularly in Western North Carolina, where active wildfires have been exacerbated by drought conditions. The episode will also delve into critical cybersecurity vulnerabilities, specifically the urgent need for federal agencies to patch a significant flaw in Citrix Netscaler by April 2. Finally, we will provide updates on the status of volcanic activity at Kilauea, maintaining a watchful eye on this dynamic geological phenomenon.Takeaways:* A significant weather event involving severe thunderstorms is occurring across multiple states.* The National Interagency Fire Center reported numerous large uncontained fires are burning nationwide.* Texas has pre-positioned emergency response resources due to expected severe storm activity.* Active wildfires in North Carolina are exacerbated by prolonged drought conditions and debris.* Cybersecurity vulnerabilities have been identified in critical systems requiring immediate action by federal agencies.* Illinois and Kansas are under severe thunderstorm warnings with damaging winds and hail reported.SourcesNOAA / NWS / SPC• Storm Prediction Center — Day 1 Convective Outlook, March 31, 2026 (1300 UTC)• Storm Prediction Center — Day 4–8 Severe Weather Outlook, March 31, 2026NIFC / InciWeb• NIFC Incident Management Situation Report — March 31, 2026 (0730 MDT)• NIFC National Fire NewsUSGS / Volcanoes• USGS HVO Volcano Notice DOI-USGS-HVO-2026-03-31T17:42:59+00:00 — Kīlauea alert WATCH/ORANGE• Kīlauea Volcano Updates — USGS• Exciting Kīlauea Lava Update: Episode 44 expected in April — Hawaiʻi Volcano ExpeditionsCISA• CISA Flags Actively Exploited Citrix Bug CVE-2026-3055 — April 2 Federal Deadline• Citrix NetScaler CVE-2026-3055 KEV Entry — CISA• CISA Cybersecurity Advisories• ICSA-26-090-01: Anritsu Remote Spectrum Monitor (authentication bypass) — ASSURANT• ICSA-26-090-02: PX4 Autopilot (MAVLink unauthenticated command execution) — ASSURANT• CISA ICS Advisories PageTexas• Gov. In this episode, the team talks with Jason Pentrail about his new two-volume set, Adena: Moundbuilders of the Ohio Valley. The books are available in hardcover and eBook formats through Amazon.com. Adena: Mound Builders of the Ohio Valley is a richly detailed, accessible exploration of one of North America's earliest mound-building societies. Drawing on archaeology, early surveys, and modern research, these books trace the rise of the Adena people from scattered Woodland communities into a tradition defined by monumental earthworks, long-distance exchange networks, and complex ceremonial life. Readers are guided through the construction and meaning of conical burial mounds, sacred circles, and ritual landscapes that still mark the hills and river valleys of Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, and eastern Indiana. The book examines Adena lifeways—craftsmanship, mortuary practices, belief systems, and social organization—while carefully separating evidence from long-standing myths and outdated interpretations. Special attention is given to the transition from Adena to Hopewell traditions, showing how ideas evolved rather than vanished. Case studies of well-known and lesser-known sites bring the past into sharp focus, revealing what these ancient earthworks tell us about memory, power, and community. Written for both general readers and serious enthusiasts, Adena Mound Builders of the Ohio Valley offers a grounded, respectful portrait of a culture whose legacy still shapes the American cultural landscape. Eric Bolander has been active on the music scene for many years. He writes thoughtfully, his songs have staying power, and he brings to the stage the same joy he brings to his students at the high school where he teaches art. Eric grew up in the Ohio Valley in the small Eastern KY town of Garrison. His dad passed on a humble and compassionate work ethic which became a driving force for Eric to achieve his life goals in subsequent years. Eric now lives here in Lexington, KY, and is a pillar in the city's art community. Eric always brings a great band to Red Barn Radio, and this week is no exception.
The primary focus of our discourse today revolves around the significant meteorological and geological occurrences affecting various regions of the United States. The battle over funding for immigration enforcement continues in Congress. A House panel has voted to bring a funding bill to the floor, setting up a key vote on Tuesday. With a very slim majority in the House, Speaker Mike Johnson can afford to lose only one Republican on the vote. Top Republican leaders say the bill must advance despite internal disagreements over the bill passed by the Senate. The search continues for Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie. Homicide detectives were sent to Nancy Guthrie's home, after she went missing over the weekend. She has not been located and investigators are expressing grace concern. Police say they also found evidence that suggests a crime had been committed and did not leave her home on her own.A dangerous blast of Arctic air is gripping much of the eastern U.S. after a powerful weekend storm. A bomb cyclone buried parts of the Carolinas in record snow, while millions are still dealing with brutal cold and dangerous travel conditions. At least 119 storm-related deaths have been reported nationwide since late January. The worst of the cold will ease this week, though highs will stay 5-15 degrees below normal, with light snow possible midweek from the Ohio Valley into the mid-Atlantic.
The lingering cold across the East will set the stage for another wave of snow for many this week. Also, dense fog led to a nearly 60-vehicle pileup that injured at least 10 people and forced the closure of one of the region's busiest highways for hours. An overview of the French and Indian War in North America, its link to the Seven Years' War, the Ohio River Valley, and Washington's early campaigns. Discover the origins of the French and Indian War, the North American front of the broader Seven Years' War, and how a river system, fortifications, and Native alliances shaped the conflict. This video traces the clash of British and French empires from competing Ohio Valley claims to the climactic engagements around Jumonville Glen and Fort Necessity. Learn how Washington's early reconnaissance and diplomacy set the stage for a continental war, and how Native American Confederacies such as the Iroquois and their rivals navigated shifting alliances to advance or resist, with beaver trade and imperial charters driving choices. The narrative covers riverine warfare, fort-building on inland frontiers, and the dynamics between European-style tactics and guerrilla warfare that defined mid-18th-century North America. By examining logistical networks, supply lines, and strategic actors, viewers gain a clearer picture of why the war expanded beyond North American borders and how it set the stage for later colonial and global conflict. @1QLeadership Question: How can university presidents creatively lead conference realignment while protecting academic priorities and strengthening institutional and league stability for the long term? Dr. John R. Porter of Lindenwood University, and Dr. Yancy Freeman of University of Tennessee Martin, explore how university presidents balance athletics and academics. The two CEO's discuss leading through conference realignment challenges in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). They also cover using creative, business-minded strategy to stabilize and grow their respective institutions. Presidents' role in athletics The guests explain that athletics is often the most visible and attention grabbing part of a university, driving applications, enrollment, school pride, donations, and media exposure, which forces presidents to devote significant time and strategic focus to sports. They emphasize that athletics must enhance the academic mission, not overshadow it, so they deliberately balance funding and messaging between academic priorities and athletic success. Stabilizing the Ohio Valley Conference When member schools left or considered leaving, the Board of Presidents responded with unusually candid, frequent conversations to reaffirm commitment, increase exit fees, and engage consultants to craft a long term strategy and structure for the conference. They describe this moment of "friction" as ultimately positive, creating tighter relationships among presidents, clearer shared vision, and a more intentional search for a new commissioner who can elevate the OVC. Creativity, strategy, and leadership style Dr. Porter applies business discipline and growth thinking—like building a multi-entity education system and treating Lindenwood as an enterprise—to drive execution, revenue growth, and investment capacity that can support both academics and athletics. Dr. Freeman focuses on strategic planning rooted in enrollment management and student experience, contributing an outcome-driven approach to conference strategy and to aligning athletics with campus-wide priorities. -Tai M. BEWILDERMENT, THE OHIO COMPANY, AND COLONIAL EXPANSION Colleague Robert G. Parkinson. Parkinson explains that "bewilderment" is the central theme of his book, drawing a thematic parallel to Joseph Conrad'sHeart of Darkness to describe the confusion and violence of the early American frontier. The conversation shifts to the Ohio Company, a massive land speculation venture involving George Washington and the Lee family, with the Cresapfamily serving as their essential partners and scouts. Washington frequently visited the Cresaps in Oldtown, Maryland, utilizing them as the "spear point" for English colonial expansion into the Ohio Valley, a move that agitated the Frenchand Indigenous tribes. It's been a really good start to the season for the likes of UNC Wilmington, Miami (OH), Buffalo, Kent State, and Belmont, among others. It hasn't been as good for the Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley conferences. Ian Sacks and Isaac Bourne break it all down and give their picks for this week.
It's cold and grey and the wind is a blowin' here in the Ohio Valley, so both the Stapletons and Chapmans are doing what families have always done in such times: gathering around the fire. For us, making space for fire in our homes has been, quite literally, life-changing, making winter warmer and life more human. Today, we're reflecting on why this is, examining what fire teaches us about God and ourselves, man and woman, and who we are as a people. This is a public episode. The Sipping & Switching Society is a modular-railroading group associated with HO-scale railroading and our next guest has a lot of knowledge about the society and we decided he was the one to talk with. The Society is originally based in North Carolina but there also versions in the Ohio Valley and Cincinnati areas. With a well-defined "module standard," distinguishing it from other modular approaches the are modules typically 30″ wide and often built in 2-foot length increments but this can vary. Construction uses a "waffle-style" framework to make modules lightweight but stiff enough for transport and repeated assembly. There's alignment pins/holes to ensure that the track ends match up exactly, typical track arrangement is two mainline tracks close to the "public" side plus an inside track for switching/yard operations. The result: very fast setup and teardown compared to less standardized modular systems. It's a very informative podcast and one we're sure you'll enjoy!!
