Today I was joined by Dr. Casey Handmer, an accomplished theoretical physicist who currently works at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab. Casey has a fascinating blog where he considers current trends in space exploration and what the future holds. Learn more about Casey here: https://caseyhandmer.wordpress.com/ We talked about the implications of SpaceX Starship, Starlink, why power beamed from space or asteroid mining will never turn a profit down here on Earth, and why he's not that scared about space radiation. IFE Distinguished Visitor Lecture, recorded at QUT on 17 July 2019.Dr Scott Davidoff from NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab discusses virtual reality (VR), artificial reality (AR), data science, and other discoveries and technologies of the digital age, and how these achievements can be used with prototyping techniques to overcome obstacles and become a force multiplier for research.
Jim Cantrell, co-founder and former CEO of Vector Launch, veteran employee of Nasa's Jet Propulsion Lab and France's CNES, and founding team member of SpaceX and Moon Express, joins me to discuss the future of space exploration (including Mars settlement) and mankind's activities in space, as well as what the private sector can accomplish in space.
Of all the places that are candidates for extraterrestrial life that we are aware of, Europa is the best. This moon of Jupiter harbors a subsurface ocean that is likely full of minerals, and thus may contain life, perhaps even complex multicellular life! Plans are under way to send probes Europa Clipper and Europa Lander to go gather data and get a closer look, so we may have more information very soon! On the show to tell us all about these missions and what we might hope to learn from them is Kevin DeBruin, a former NASA rocket scientist who worked as systems engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab and that personally worked on these missions. What will we find on Europa? Let's talk about it! In this episode, host Maryfran Johnson talks with James Rinaldi, CIO at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, about opening up data silos and driving data transformation; having a seat at the table to lead change; and using technology to explore the universe.
The final instalment of S03 Episode 1: We Are The Witchcraft (Contains adult themes). John Maynard Keynes described Isaac Newton as the last of the magicians; the last person of science for whom the gnostic mysteries still held some sway. In 1914 another scientist and magician was born. Jack Parsons would go on to help establish NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab developing a rocket fuel that will put the human race on the moon. In 1946, Parsons would also attempt a complicated magic ritual in the hope of manifesting the divine goddess Babalon. Some say he did it too.In 1952 Parsons was killed in a catastrophic explosion at his house in what many believe to be mysterious circumstances that to this day remain unexplained... Episode 69: Scientists Who Believed in Ghosts Jay walks us through Scientific Superstars who believed in ghosts. This story contains: 1. Sir Isaac Newton. (Discovered the laws of motion, laws of gravitation, and invented calculus – all while being profoundly interested in the occult!) 2. Carl Linnaeus. (Father of Modern Taxonomy – who had a bit of a mermaid fetish. HAWT!) 3. Thomas Edison. (Inventor of basically everything – may have been working to invent the “Spirit Phone”!) 4. Jack Parsons. (Founding member of NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab – who was also an acolyte of Aleister Crowley!) 5. Francis Crick. (Co-discovered the double-helix model of DNA – and was believer in a theory called "panspermia." Which basically means that he believed that life was seeded on Earth by intergalactic "sperm" on the tail of some comet or meteor) Sweet Dreams XOXOZzzz.
In this episode, we hear from Suveena, Michael and Michelle about their projects at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, and how so many different types of engineering can collaborate at one of the country's biggest space centers. From navigating their first corporate internship, to what they're doing on the weekends, hear about how Michael, Suveena, and veteran JPL intern Michelle's summers have been truly out of this world.
Climate scientist Peter Kalmus works for NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab. But he's not planning to get on a jet anytime soon, because he has given up flying. In fact this keen cyclist, urban beekeeper and chicken farmer has abandoned nearly all activities requiring fossil fuels. His incredible life transformation is brilliantly documented in his book "Being The Change". But why the radical lifestyle shift? Is he trying to save the world? Ah, well it's not that simple...
Dan Goods is the "Visual Strategist" for NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab where he develops creative ways to communicate complex concepts by transforming them into meaningful stories that can be universally understood. His work can be seen in museums, airports, and outer space. In this episode, you'll learn what it takes to make stories meaningful and unforgettable and the best question to ask while creating a new project. Learn more about Dan at directedplay.com
This week we tackle Allana's question: If we were to travel to gas giant Jupiter, would we sink to the core? Or float straight on through? Heather Douglas put this to Dr Marc Rayman from NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab to see if he could clear the air... Like this podcast? Please help us by supporting the Naked Scientists
