The Queensland University of Technology could face a potential parliamentary inquiry over a controversial 'anti-racism' conference. At the centre of the backlash is an image displayed during the event, titled 'Dutton’s Jew,' which mocked Jewish supporters of Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, accusing him of politicising the Jewish community. Gary Hardgrave said on 4BC Drive, "QUT, it should be QUIT." 4BC Drive invited QUT's Vice Chancellor onto the show but she was unavailable. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When it comes to what happens after we die, many people think the only options are burial or cremation. However, there's a third choice that is gaining attention: body donation. Body donation is crucial in advancing medical knowledge and training future healthcare professionals. Ian Mellor from QUT's Body Bequest Program told Shane Doherty on 4BC Summer Drive, "Our program is focused on teaching surgeons and paramedics the latest technologies, surgeries, and procedures... that will help the general public after they've had surgery." "Not only does it save lives, but it gives people, the general public a better health outcome from surgical procedures," Mellor continued.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We meet Dr Daniel Timms, the Australian biomechanical engineer behind BiVACOR who has dedicated his life to developing a titanium Total Artificial Heart (TAH) to restore the lives of people with end-stage heart failure, a disease that impacted his own family. It's a 25-year quest that has taken him from a PhD at QUT, developing the device with his father in his parent's kitchen in Queensland, to collaborating with experts around the world and expanding operations to the US on his mission to save lives. In 2024 Daniel made history in Texas, with the first successful implantation of the titanium heart into a patient awaiting a heart transplant, as part of an FDA feasibility study. Since then, several patients have received the heart as a bridge to a heart transplant and now Australian patients will be involved in clinical studies.MTPConnect's Targeted Translation Research Accelerator program for diabetes and cardiovascular disease, an MRFF initiative, has supported BiVACOR 's development of a more portable external controller to allow for long-term use with the heart.News of BiVACOR's innovation has spread around the world as patients have shared their story of second chances after receiving the implant. Now we hear Daniel's story, how the TAH is designed, his inspiration and approach to innovation, collaborations with NASA and transplant surgeons around the world, his plans to expand operations in Australia and what's next for the privately held company he has put his heart and soul into as he aims to develop the TAH as a long term device that patients can have for the rest of their lives.

Warwick Powell discusses the East versus West conflict which is largely a symptom of the underlying economic transformations underway. There is a massive disconnect between the economy of exchange value and use value in the West which has led to a hollowing out of the economy resulting in political crises. The Global North feel their "distributional setup" is under threat and so the only way to stem the tide is to impose a set of militarily enforceable arrangements to deny the Global South the ability to become capable of creating value. Russia and China are better at harnessing AI, particularly to drive production efficiencies. He comments on currency multipolarity, dedollarization, Digital Westphalia, and describes the suspension of liberties in the West as an autoimmune response. Regarding the Algorithm Ghetto, there is slippage meaning it can't be implemented perfectly and technology inevitably brings with it possibilities of all sorts of resistance. The West is going to step up its Color Revolution-style regime change operations. Multipolarity is about the reassertion of sovereignty and an increased interoperability of states. The world is tired of Western hegemony and now has the courage and means to confront it. The challenge will be to avoid kinetic conflict. In this episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast, Dr. Jesse Green is joined by HR specialist, Jackie Strachan from HR Tactics. Jackie's passion for creating better Human Resources outcomes stems from over 20 years' experience in the field and a drive for finding innovative solutions. Recruiting the ‘right' people, and keeping the right people is an ongoing challenge we all face when running any size business. If you do not have a recruitment process, then this episode is going to help you develop one, plus specifically guide you through how to advertise to recruit great people for your practice. Then if that first person that you've hired doesn't work out, you're back to square one. Jackie's HR career has seen her hold both operational and strategic HR management roles across a vast array of industry sectors including retail, financial services, child protection, professional services, dental, state emergency services, Department of Justice, agency recruitment and IT. Jackie is a Certified Professional Member of the Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI), holds an MBA from QUT, a Cert IV in Training & Assessment, and accreditation as a facilitator of ‘Extended Disc' Psychometric Employee Profiling. [4:14] - The most common challenges dental practices face in regard to the recruitment process. [10:36] - Your recruitment process gives you the opportunity to sell your business to find the right applicant. [17:40] - How to write a great recruitment ad for your practice. [20:36] - How to create your recruitment process. [27:17] - How should your onboarding process align with your recruitment process? [29:34] - What ‘Day 1' should look like for your new recruit. [35:22] - What your new recruit should be thinking at the end of their first week. HR peeps call it ‘The Employee Experience'. [44:25] - A wrap up of the 6 steps to your recruitment process.

Law students – especially those unsure about what they want from their careers – should proactively seek as much diverse experience as they can. As Hayden McLoughlin has discovered from working in-house, one will be much better placed from having taken up such opportunities. In this episode of The Protégé Podcast, host Jerome Doraisamy speaks with NIOA Group paralegal and QUT law student Hayden McLoughlin about being open to new ideas and pathways as one progresses while studying, how he “fell into” an in-house role as a student, whether in-house work is undersold to students as a vocational pathway, and what his duties look like in his current role. Mr McLoughlin also reflects on the capacity for students to become better-rounded graduates if they engage in in-house work, the benefits he has gleaned, challenges he has faced and overcome, how undertaking a summer clerkship has complemented his in-house experience, why law students need to seek as broad a remit of experience as they can, questions one should ask of one's self, and why students must go out and seek value. Understand your profound influence on others, even in the most fleeting of encounters. A serendipitous encounter took place at All Hallows where I was giving a presentation to the year 12 students about my unexpected career as a neuroscientist. Little did I know, until a month ago, that Solene Hegarty-Cremer was sitting in the auditorium that day or that my story would shape her life in the most unexpected ways. While exploring the intricacies of the human brain, I emphasized the unpredictable nature of future career opportunities and the profound impact one can have on others. Solene made her way out of the bustling auditorium, her mind buzzing with inspiration and felt a resolute conviction that mathematics was her destined path in higher education. Unbeknownst to me, fast forward, Solene contacted me on LinkedIn, having just started a Applied Mathematics PhD at Université de Montréal. Upon discovering their shared connection to All Hallows, their conversation blossomed, transcending the boundaries of time. Our conversation reminded me of the profound influence one can have on others, even in the most unknown and fleeting of encounters. Our newly discovered intertwined journey, starting from All Hallows, and then influenced by Professor Ian Turner at QUT exemplifies the interconnectedness of life's twists and turns. In the realm of academia, where knowledge intertwines and inspiration knows no bounds, their meeting stands as a reminder that one never truly comprehends the breadth of their influence or the transformative power of their words. The enigmatic laws of the universe that continue to elude our understanding, as we continue in our respective fields, our shared story serves as a testament to the remarkable journeys that unfold when passion and destiny collide. I envision a moment in the near future when Solene stands at the podium in the All Hallows auditorium, addressing a captivated audience of year 12 students. Little do they know that within those walls, a profound shift is about to take place, altering the course of someone's life in ways they never could have foreseen. As Solene delivers her inspiring words, one or more unsuspecting students in the audience will find their path redirected, their destiny forever changed. It's a powerful reminder that within the confines of a single moment, lives can be transformed, and new possibilities can emerge, reshaping the very fabric of our existence. #ProfoundInfluence #UnexpectedEncounters #LifeChangingMoments #InspiringJourneys #UnforeseenDestinies #AcademicImpact #Interconnectedness #TransformativePower #EnigmaticUniverse #PassionAndDestiny #TwistsAndTurns #ReshapingExistence #IntriguingConnections #SerendipitousEncounter #UnleashingPotential #FleetingInfluence #UnveilingDestinies #UnexpectedPaths #PowerOfWords #JourneyOfInspiration #UnboundPossibilitiesSupport the showLearn more at www.profselenabartlett.com
