In this special DATTA QLD Conference preview episode, Stephen Anderson speaks with two presenters who are exploring powerful and innovative approaches to Design and Technology education. First, Nick Kelly from QUT discusses why design should be considered one of the most important subjects in school. The conversation explores creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and the growing importance of design capability in a future shaped by artificial intelligence and automation. Nick argues that many of the so-called "21st century skills" schools aim to develop are fundamentally design skills, and that design education deserves a far more central place in modern schooling. The second conversation features Richard Neville from Babinda P–12 School, who shares a collaborative game design project connecting primary and secondary students. Students work together to design and build a multiplayer arcade-style game that requires players to cooperate in order to succeed. The project combines coding, systems thinking, collaborative problem solving, and iterative design while also encouraging students to work across year levels. This episode offers practical insights, big-picture thinking, and inspiring examples of what Design and Technology education can look like when creativity, collaboration, and authentic problem solving are placed at the centre of learning.

Tim Mosey holds a Master of Exercise Science (Strength and Conditioning) from Edith Cowan University and a Bachelor of Applied Science (Human Movement Studies) from QUT. He is an ASCA Level 3 Master S&C Coach with over sixteen years of experience across Olympic, professional, and youth development sport. Tim is currently the Senior Strength & Conditioning Coach at the NSW Waratahs, where he leads strength, power, and speed development, as well as rehabilitation programming for the Super Rugby squad. He has previously served in high-performance roles at the Queensland Academy of Sport, the Tasmanian Institute of Sport, as Head of Athletic Performance - Academy for the Waratahs, and as Director of Athletic Development at Brisbane Boys' College. He has supported athletes to Olympic and international success in diving, rowing, archery, water polo, and skeleton, including preparing athletes for the 2010 Whistler and 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games. Tim's areas of expertise include strength, power and speed development, return-to-play programming, and long-term athlete development. He has contributed to the field through published peer-reviewed research, mentoring emerging coaches, and presenting at national conferences. QUOTES “I'm a reluctant rehabber. I find it the most challenging and frustrating part of strength and conditioning. It doesn't excite me. It challenges me. I find it difficult I guess and that's weirdly why I wanted to dive into it” “If we're thinking about aerobic type work, you can break it down into whether you want to do extensive or intensive type work. So maybe extensive work where the length of your effort is a longer, straighter effort versus an intensive type effort where you might have more shuttle-based work.” “I've always lived off this quote from an old colleague, Nick Lumley and his comment was when the bombs are going off, you don't want blokes who've just been running straight line MAS, you want guys who've been getting off the deck and shuttling. So I guess I'm biased towards a little bit more shuttle-based conditioning work than straight line work”. “The challenge of rehabbing someone in season is the coach wants him back and there's the old adage of are we returning to play or returning to perform? I don't think that really applies in a lot of instances when we're getting guys back out on the paddock, particularly in-season. I would argue that we return blokes that aren't ready to perform a lot of the time but they're ready to go back and play” “I would start generally in the backend of a reconditioning block with more aerobic based extensive work and that might involve longer straighter efforts with maybe one turn. I might progress that down to more intensive based conditioning work with more turns, same sort of work to rest ratios, but more change of direction and off deck work, increasing to intensive anaerobic type work as they get towards the backend of the last third and fourth weeks.” SHOWNOTES 1) Tim's time in strength and conditioning, from Tasmanian Institute of Sport to Brisbane Boys College and QAS to the NSW Waratahs 2) The basics of reconditioning and using an energy system adaptation led strategy 3) The simplicity of four-minute conditioning blocks and the importance of shuttle-based work 4) Skill work in re-conditioning? 5) Building back into contact after injuries, especially for shoulder cases 6) The difference between returning to play versus returning to perform 7) Reconditioning periodization and the use of extensive and intensive days 8) Tim's favourite reconditioning drills and the challenges of adapting training to different athlete types within the same squad and sport PEOPLE MENTIONED Peter Culhane Paul Larsen Martin Buchheit Nick Lumley

Tesla has announced Australia and New Zealand will become the first global right-hand drive markets to activate their Full Self-Driving Supervised technology. The semi-autonomous feature is set to roll out on Tesla's Model 3 and Y vehicles first, and is capable of completing a door-to-door journey including navigating traffic and other road conditions without the driver touching pedals or the steering wheel. In Australia under current legislation, autonomous or driverless vehicles are prohibited by approximately 700 rules, but Tesla insists their new system falls compiles with Australian law. Deep Dive: Would you jump into a car with no one behind the wheel? While videos of Teslas changing lanes and driverless taxis navigating the streets of San Francisco and LA have gone viral, autonomous vehicles are closer to becoming a reality in Australia than you might think. Driverless cars are already being trialled on public roads across the country, but new research shows one in five Aussies are turning off in-built safety features like lane departure warnings and emergency braking, admitting they don’t trust the technology. In this powerful NAIDOC Week yarn, I sit down with Uncle Cheg—Gregory Egert—one of our most respected elders and lifelong advocates for community, culture, and education in Southeast Queensland. When we visit the doctor, we routinely measure blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, weight, and heart rate. For years, we've known that early life experiences—especially stress and adversity—leave long-lasting marks on the nervous system. But we rarely stop to ask: How can we see those marks? That's where the eye comes in. Why the Eye Reveals the BrainThe corneal nerve plexus is a dense network of sensory nerves at the front of the eye. It's part of the peripheral nervous system, which connects directly to the brain.Emerging research shows that these corneal nerves reflect the state of the broader nervous system, including:Stress loadInflammatory markersNeurodegenerative changesIn other words: When we look at the eye, we're not just seeing vision structures—we're seeing a living map of how the brain and body have been shaped over time. I had the fortunate opportunity to do study leave at UC Berkeley in the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, a research project with Drs Katie Edwards and Luisa Holguin Colorado and Kerri Gillepie at QUT and Dr Suzanne Fleiszig and Dr David Evans at UC Berkeley. Why Isn't Nervous System Analysis Routine? Here's the bigger question. When we visit the doctor, we routinely measure blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, weight, and heart rate. But the nervous system—the control center of our entire body—is rarely assessed in standard care. Why?We know that chronic stress increases risk for mental illness, metabolic disease, cardiovascular conditions, and cognitive decline. We know that early life stress reshapes neural pathways and immune responses. Yet we lack accessible, affordable, and scalable tools to routinely check the health of the nervous system. That's what makes the eye so exciting. It offers a non-invasive, real-time window into nervous system health—and a chance to shift medicine toward prevention and early detection, rather than just reacting to crisis. In this episode we discuss:How the eye reveals hidden stressWhat we're learning about the links between early life adversity and neural healthWhy public engagement is critical as we develop these new toolsThis is a conversation not just for scientists, but for everyone who cares about mental health, brain health, and the future of healthcare. I'd love to hear what excites or concerns you about this emerging field. When we truly see how early life shapes the brain, we can no longer treat people as just symptoms or diagnoses. It opens a new kind of care: Asking what happened to you? not just what's wrong? Making nervous system health part of routine care Prioritising prevention, resilience, and healingBy measuring the hidden imprints of experience, we can design treatments that help rewire the brain, not just manage symptoms. This isn't just science. It's a transformation in how we care for people.Let's build that future, together. There's been a ton of Bluey related stuff in the news recently - from the news that Bluey is now the number one show in the US, from Kelly Clarkson giving her entire audience a trip to Brisbane to visit Bluey's world - even the news that American Express named Brisbane as one of their trending travel locations for 2025.Much of the growth of the show has been driven by adult Bluey fans, many of whom don't even have kids! How has a (supposedly) show for kids resonated so well with grown ups?Sarina Petersen will be one of the speakers at the upcoming TEDxQUT event on October 27th. Sarina is a student of Law and Behavioural Science (Psychology) at QUT and works as part of the in-house legal team of one of Queensland's largest not-for-profit organisations. She is most interested in social psychology and human behaviour - particularly, the way that these interact and influence one another. Sarina is a fond viewer of the Brisbane-produced cartoon Bluey and is enthusiastic about analysing its enormous worldwide appeal and cultural impact - particularly its impact on adults.Find out more about the TEDxQUT event here.Bluey's Brisbane is the podcast that explores the real life world of your favourite Heeler family.Hosted by Justin Rouillon and Lou Bromley - follow us on Facebook and Instagram - @blueysbrisbaneEmail us at blueysbrisbane@gmail.com with with your thoughts, comments or questions.

Warwick Powell discusses the East versus West conflict which is largely a symptom of the underlying economic transformations underway. There is a massive disconnect between the economy of exchange value and use value in the West which has led to a hollowing out of the economy resulting in political crises. The Global North feel their "distributional setup" is under threat and so the only way to stem the tide is to impose a set of militarily enforceable arrangements to deny the Global South the ability to become capable of creating value. Russia and China are better at harnessing AI, particularly to drive production efficiencies. He comments on currency multipolarity, dedollarization, Digital Westphalia, and describes the suspension of liberties in the West as an autoimmune response. Regarding the Algorithm Ghetto, there is slippage meaning it can't be implemented perfectly and technology inevitably brings with it possibilities of all sorts of resistance. The West is going to step up its Color Revolution-style regime change operations. Multipolarity is about the reassertion of sovereignty and an increased interoperability of states. The world is tired of Western hegemony and now has the courage and means to confront it. The challenge will be to avoid kinetic conflict.
