Nathan and Eppy discuss S1E16 Counter Gambit. Jim is hired by an unsavory acquaintance to find a woman, which he quickly realizes is a cover for some kind of valuable that this woman may or may not have with her. Once Jim does find her, however, the situation quickly becomes more complicated. This is a con game episode, and we really enjoyed the twists and turns of the con, and (as titled) the counter-con. Of particular delight is the first regular-season appearance of Angel Martin! If you can see this one cold, you should - there's a lot to appreciate once you know the story, but the layers of misdirection are deftly handled and worth experiencing at full effect, if possible! In addition to appreciating the script and performances, we talk about the phenomena of characters acting in certain ways in order to misdirect the audience (and not anyone else in the world of the narrative) as to their nature or intentions, versus misdirecting other characters while the audience watches. Jim Lindsay is a master boot fitter in Aspen. He works at BootTech creating customized boots for skiers. These boots can often make a huge difference in a skiers stance. Tune in to hear us talk about the importance of a good fit, Jim’s interest in orthotics and biomechanics, and what kind of difference a properly fitted boot can make. Topics: [02:04] Jim says that everyone is (or should be) familiar with the idea that you can change a ski’s performance by changing its angle. Whereas most people believe that if a boot fits comfortably, there is nothing else to consider. [02:33] Jim says it’s about adapting the boot to fit your unique anatomy. [04:50] Jim grew up skiing in Wisconsin, then went to a ski academy in Vermont for High School. [05:10] Once he realized what he wanted to do, he went to school in the summer to learn about orthotics, orthopedics, and biomechanics of the lower extremity. [05:30] Even though he works at the bottom of a major mountain, he doesn’t get to ski every day of the season. [05:53] Throughout the 80’s he did boot fittings at the Aspen Highlands. Then he did speciality Orthotics in Aspen under the Gondola, as well as a shop at Snowmass. [06:35] Once Jim fit someone in a boot, it would improve their skiing significantly. [07:02] The simple thing of changing someone’s stance can greatly improve their abilities. [07:45] In the 80’s, boot fitting was primarily focused on comfort. [12:40] Jim explains his method to fitting different types of boots and what you can do to improve your fit, based on your needs. [16:00] Jim continues to fit Jason into a boot and discusses the consequences of an ill-fitting boot. [19:00] Jim’s ski philosophy and how it relates to boot fitting. [19:50] It’s important to talk to your boot fitter and communicate your needs. Quotes: “...Adapting the boot to complement your anatomy and making your angles and the boots angles all fit together.” -Jim Lindsay “Very often, someone’s needs will determine what type of boot they have.” -JIm Lindsay “If the first thing your boot fitter does is go through and evaluate a whole bunch of things about your anatomy, instead of asking you what type of terrain you like to ski and what size shoe you wear, that’s a bad sign.” -Jim Lindsay   Resources: Wagner Custom Skis BootTech Inc.

Nathan and Eppy discuss S4E9 The Mayor's Committee from Deer Lick Falls. A group of stand-up citizens from Deer Lick Falls, Michigan employ Jim to find them a firetruck, but of course that's just a cover for their real intent: hiring a hit man! Once Jim rejects their offer, he needs to find the niece who's the target and try to convince the various bureaucracies involved that these "black-belts in respectability" have murder on their mind. A memorable episode that approaches the Rockford Files formula from a skewed direction, we really liked this one, and not just for all of the connections to Eppy's childhood haunts! In our second half, we talk about how this episode gives us a set of non-standard villains who manage to be simultaneously awful and endearing, and how it uses seperate mini-character-arcs within the group of them to achieve that. We also break open the idea of each step of the story raising the stakes for our hapless committee, and how to include that in your stories and games. Summary & Ideas for Action Jim Hake is Founder and CEO of Spirit of America. Jim founded Spirit of America after the events of 9/11. The Spirit of America provides privately-funded humanitarian, economic, and non-lethal assistance to projects around the world.     Key Takeaways [2:21] A Stanford grad - Silicon Valley captivated him. New opportunities spark new inspiration. He worked for a startup in school. Later, he started a company with partners. With success on the early internet, they sold the company. After four years, Jim left to start an internet company. The dot.com bubble burst, and his company failed. [6:52] Jim was looking for a buyer when the attacks of 9/11 occurred. Jim immediately committed to help. Tragic circumstances may awaken heroic aspirations to help in meaningful and substantial ways. Jim decided to do something substantial to make a meaningful difference. [8:30] Once Jim had an idea, he stuck with it. He had no Government or nonprofit experience; he just moved forward. A National Geographic Channel story about Special Forces Sgt. 1st Class Jay Smith organizing baseball for local Afghan youth inspired Jim. Baseball helped Jay and his team build better relationships. [11:29] Jim realized other men and women serving would like to do the same. He wanted to provide resources for them. Jim learned his own background as an entrepreneur was relevant to Special Forces. The Special Forces lack access to venture capital. Windows of opportunity close too quickly for channels. [15:10] Jim gives examples of projects in the Middle East to support the war effort. SOA has provided targeted humanitarian assistance, economic assistance, and non-lethal assistance to get basic services back up and running, and build trust and prevent insurgency, in 50 countries, to date. [17:08] Jim describes a large, long-term successful operation in Niger, working under the guidance of the Theater Special Operations Commands (TSOCs). They represent the best of American ideals, and support the U.S. mission abroad working with the military and with diplomats, in their missions. [24:43] Jim stresses the importance of listening to learn. Jim knew, starting Spirit of America, that he had no knowledge of what to do in a village in Afghanistan or West Africa, or what the military should do. So he knew his organization would need to listen to and respond to the front lines.   [28:30] Jim considers the struggle between listening, and being aggressive. Be aware that between the two approaches, neither one is always right. General Mattis said, “We’re going to be no better friend, and no worse enemy.”  General Mattis gives repeatable direction. It is simple and understandable. It involves active listening and verifying understanding. [32:42] Jim has worked with a lot of great people, but his father was his greatest mentor. His father had a sign, “Instead of thinking of reasons why you can’t, think of how you can.” He also told him, “You can do anything, you’re a Hake.” Jim learned confidence to try things, experiment, and become what he is today. Early childhood influences set the course for future aspirations. [35:30] Former SOS George Shultz, is on the Spirit of America advisory board. Jim went to his office at Stanford, and asked him how he stays looking so great. Sec. Shultz stood up and said, “Look at a young man like you. You have your whole life ahead of you!” At age 59, it gave Jim a great boost.   [37:24] Jim’s lessons: People everywhere have much in common; people want a better life for their children; people want meaning in their life.    Website: SpiritOfAmerica.org Pick a project to support. The Bible says in 1 Timothy 6:7: “We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.” The featured quote for this episode is from Mark Twain. He said, "The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time." Our topic for today is titled "The Spirituality of Dying, Part 5" from the book, "The Art of Dying: Living Fully into the Life to Come" by Rob Moll. --- Letting Go Jim’s renewed sense of purpose and spiritual vision came about with some difficulty. First, Jim said, he had to learn to trust that God would take care of his family. “I am a control guy,” Jim explained. “It was unfathomable for me to figure out how God could take care of my wife and kids without me on the scene.” But reading Luke where Jesus talks about leaving family members behind for fidelity to Christ, Jim was struck by Jesus’ words. It was exactly what he couldn’t do. Jim said he heard God ask, “How much do you love me, Jim? Do you really love me enough to trust me to take care of your wife and your children?” Once Jim had let go of his need to be his family’s sole provider, his family had a surprise gift for him. Early on Easter Sunday morning, a friend came to get Jim and took him to church. The pastor met Jim outside, and the three friends walked through the church doors together. Inside, his pastor gave Jim a program for the event that was about to take place. His pastor said, “Jim, you have about a hundred friends in there, friends of yours, friends of your kids. Your wife has put this together. All four of your kids are going to get baptized.” That morning, Jim’s kids all gave their testimonies and were baptized. “It was just a little service for our family and for our friends,” Jim said. His wife also shared with their friends about the difficulties she had dealing with Jim’s illness, but also the strength God had given her to handle her husband’s death. ...
