Today, Debbie speaks with bestselling author Abigail Thomas whom Stephen King calls “the Emily Dickinson of memoirists."Her new memoir, titled "Still Life at Eighty," is a series of loosely connected essays on the topic of aging. But it's so much more than that. Abby, as she insisted that Debbie call her, is funny and frank and profane as she talks about the good and the bad of aging. Yes, there are aches and pains. No, she doesn't mind being old. In fact, she loves it. She no longer cares what people think of her and - just for the record - she is not afraid of death. As she puts it: "Please God, let there be no afterlife."In this conversation she and Debbie talk about her writing (Debbie finds it "transcendent"), her relationship to time and memories, her longterm friendship with literary agent Chuck Verrill (who died in early 2022), and why she loves working with clay.Abby is the daughter of renowned science writer Lewis Thomas, the mother of four children and a grandmother of 12. She is the bestselling author of several previous memoirs, including "A Three Dog Life" and "What Comes Next and How to Like It." She lives in Woodstock, NY with her dogs, where she writes and teaches writing. In a rare trip to the 1970s, Big D and Gene examine the Jim Henson film that started it all: "The Muppet Movie." Sharing a respect for the wild characters and expert puppeteering in this 1979 road comedy, the Shat Crew digs into the surprisingly adult themes, delightfully quiet jokes and clever self-awareness. On the other hand, "The Muppet Movie" drags at times before culminating in a gorgeous ensemble ending. In this episode, the Shat Crew covers a real-life Orson Welles, songs that go on too long, "The Muppet Movie" legacy and whether Animal is overrated. Embark on a musical journey to Italy as we listen to pop and disco from the late 1950s through the 1980s. We travel around the European country learning about its influence in disco and internationally celebrated pop songs.
Today we get a German lesson from one hit wonder, Little Peggy March. Peggy came into the WOKY studios with her one hit “I Will Follow Him.” She recorded that song in German and a few other languages. It was a number one hit in the U.S. and many other countries. At 15 years old, Peggy became the youngest female artist to ever hit the top of the Billboard charts in the United States. Our German speaking engineer, Paul Leser, had quite a conversation with her, some of which you will hear. Her career got derailed by the British invasion in 1964 and her manager ran off with her earnings leaving her with $500. Little Peggy March got her nickname because she was 4 feet, 10 inches tall. I asked her how she started singing in German.
It's our 5th Anniversary! What better way to celebrate by going back to were it all started with The Six Million Dollar Man. They have to figure out who stole something from the Pentagon during a preview for the Unity Games. Oscar goes rogue during the episode, gets kidnapped, his nephew blown up and so much more. Which American singer songwriter sold more than 130 million records worldwide? Who recorded these unforgettable songs? “Sweet Caroline,” “Cracklin Rose,” “Song Sung Blue,” “Forever in Blue Jeans,” and “America.” Neil Diamond was one of the greatest hitmakers of all-time. “Sweet Caroline” was originally written for his wife at the time, but Sweet Marsha didn't work so he had to find a three-syllable name instead. He also wrote a song for the Monkees, which he'll tell us about. Remember when he had a song out that was also recorded by Barbra Streisand at the same time. So DJs around the country put the two together and forced Columbia Records to release a Barbra and Neil recording. It was a big hit. Poor guy was asleep when I called, as you will hear.
Nathan and Eppy enter the publishing world in S4E2 Trouble in Chapter 17. "Feminity not feminism" author Ann Louise Clement wants to hire Jim as a bodyguard, which isn't his beat. But after witnessing an apparent attempt on her life, he can't not look into it. Unfortunately for Jim, Ann Louise is more interested in publicity than preservation, and he begins to suspect it's all a farce - until her agent is killed in an apparent case of mistaken identity. This snappy Juanita Bartlett episode isn't an "issue" episode, but we appreciate the chance to talk about how she uses the show to contrast progressive and retrograde ideas about feminism, as well as enjoy all of the Rockfordishness we know and love. In a time long gone there existed a magical place. A place where the music seemed to never stop, the alcohol flowed freely and the drugs were clean and easily attainable. What was this magical place and time you ask? Why it was the 1970s and 1980s in the far off land of California, more specifically the now overcrowded and congested streets of LA. But even more specifically we are talking of the Sunset Strip. A place where many of the most famous rock acts cut their teeth, including the fictional act & the titular band of the Amazon Prime original show Daisy Jones & The Six.The Copilots Review Patreon page --> PatreonNew episodes on the 2nd and 22nd of every month, with interstitial episodes released on the 12th.You can find us on YouTube. If you ever run into Dick Cavett, don't call him an intellectual. He'll explain and reprimand me for even suggesting that. Cavett was a popular TV talk show host. He interviewed all of the big names of the time. Lucille ball, Marlon Brando, George Harrison, Richard Burton and hundreds more. He'll talk about some of his best and worst conversations. Cavett was also a writer for Jack Paar and came up with his famous line, “Here they are, Jayne Mansfield” when introducing the well-endowed actress. Dick also wrote for Merv Griffin and Johnny Carson on the “Tonight Show.” Clips from Cavett's TV show have been used in the films “Annie Hall,” “Forrest Gump” and “Apollo 13.” You may have seen him on “Saturday Night Live”, “Kate & Allie and “Cheers.” Dick was on television in the United States for five decades.

Jazz/Rock Fusion greats Blood, Sweat & Tears were on top of their game in 1970, winning grammies, headlining Woodstock and racking up hit after hit with Spinning Wheel, And When I Die, and You've Made Me So Very Happy. And then they ventured behind the Iron Curtain. It was not their idea. Nixon was President. The Viet Nam War raged on and BS & T were blackmailed into acting as emissaries on behalf of the U.S. State Department, touring the Soviet Bloc countries of Yugoslavia, Romania and Poland. This precarious adventure and the ensuing stateside fallout are chronicled in the new doc, What The Hell Happened To Blood, Sweat and Tears? Director John Scheinfeld and BS&T Drummer Bobby Colomby join us to discuss this remarkable film, the newly unearthed tour footage, The State Departments' and the Soviet Bloc countries' respective agendas, and how America's response in 1970 reflects a nation as fractured and polarized as the one we see today. Plus, we learn about the jazz and soul origins of BS&T, Bobby's foggy Woodstock memories, John's story-telling principles and how the making of this documentary allowed Bobby, at long last, to recognize his own skill as a drummer! All that and Fritz and Weezy are recommending Sin Eater: The Crimes of Anthony Pellicano on Hulu & HBO's doc series, The Anarchists.Path Points of Interest:What The Hell Happened To Blood Sweat and TearsDirector John Scheinfeld John Scheinfeld on InstagramBobby Colomby Memorandum From the President's Assistant for National Security Affairs (Kissinger) to President NixonL.A. Milton Berle was the first major American television star and known to millions as “Uncle Milty.” Berle was referred to as Mr. Television in the golden age of TV. As a child he was Buster Brown for Buster Brown Shoes. He had parts in several films, appeared on many TV shows including hosting Saturday Night Live and the Muppet Show. He did some stand-up comedy and had a comedy variety radio show. Maybe you remember the Milton Berle Show with Arnold Stang and deep voiced announcer Frank Gallop. Uncle Milty was probably best known for hosting the “Texaco Star Theatre” where he dominated the Nielsen ratings with a 97 percent share of the viewing audience. He won Emmys for the show and even caused an increase in the sales of televisions.

From your childhood comes this podcast with Captain Kangaroo. Bob Keeshan created and played the title role in the children's TV program. Captain Kangaroo was the longest running kid's TV show of the day. It ran from 1955 to 1984. Bob also played Clarabell the Clown on the “Howdy Doody Show.” We had this conversation on the set of a Captain Kangaroo show filmed at Great America in Gurnee, Illinois. I was offered interviews with the cast and what they called a new up and coming actor. I turned that one down. It turned out to be a big mistake. That actor was John Ritter, who became the star of the TV sitcom “Three's Company.”

Welcome to Twenty Dollars a Day, the podcast where we explore our favorite holodeck adventures in the Star Trek universe! Nathan and Eppy join the crew of Deep Space 9 for some thrilling spy action in S4E9 Our Man Bashir. Doctor Bashir is enjoying his new holo-adventure as a Bond-esque superspy when Garak crashes the party. Unfortunately, a transporter accident puts the patterns of the bridge crew into the story, and suddenly Bashir and Garak have to contend with the possibility of their actions having real-life consequences. An homage to James Bond, of course, this episode features a refreshing twist on the "stuck on the holodeck" trope while also grounding the romp with nods to long-running DS9 storylines. Happy April, everyone! This is our sixth look at a Star Trek holodeck episode that follows on the themes of our first love, The Rockford FIles. Hope you enjoy it! At the dawn of the singer/songwriter era, there was a time when the genre was dominated by men. Then, along came Melanie. With but one minor hit charting at one radio station, she took the stage at Woodstock. Just Melanie. Her guitar and 500,000 peace loving new friends, holding candles in the rain. The experience inspired Melanie's anthem, Lay Down, landing her new album in the collection of every aspiring hippy girl the world over. The hits kept coming. Ruby Tuesday, What Have They Done To My Song, Ma? And Brand New Key. Melanie was everywhere. Writing, touring and creating a soundtrack that inspired young girls to grow into women who went after their dreams.Melanie Safka has raised a family but she's never stopped making music. Her story-telling is as epic as her songs. She shares how she defied her parents' debutant dreams for her and followed her passions, how she quite accidentally met her producer/manager/husband, Peter Schekeryk, her out of body Woodstock experience, featuring a pot of tea sent over by Joan Baez, her spiritual collaboration with The Edwin Hawkins Singers, how fasting, hallucinating and McDonald's inspired the roller skate song, Brand New Key and her recent backyard duet with super fan, Miley Cyrus.Plus Fritz and Weezy recommend I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy and A Spy Among Friends.Path Points of Interest:A Spy Among Friends - AmazonI'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdyiCarly on NetflixiCarly on NickelodeonMelanie SafkaMelanie on YoutubeMelanie on WikipediaLay Down (Candles in the Rain) with the Edwin Hawkins singersMelanie on PatreonMelanie on FacebookMelanie on TwitterMelanie with Miley CyrusSurprise Duet with Todd Rundgren at Darryl's HouseMelanie's son Beau Jarred Schekeryk Melanie's daughter Leilah Hayman Melanie's daughter Jeordie SchekerykUpcoming Signing at Chiller Theatre in Parsippany, NJ

Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode! In February of 2023, we learned that we lost an icon of not just manga and anime, but a pillar of otaku fandom as we know it: Leiji Matsumoto. The first part of the stream I was joined by Leiji Matsumoto translator and superfan, Zack Davisson, as we give some background on Matsumoto's live and work. What do you get when you cross bossa nova with jazz and funk? You get Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66. Sergio performed with many artists through the years. He rerecorded Mas Que Nada in 2006 with the Black Eyed Peas. Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss recorded Mendes and Brasil 66 on Herb Alpert's A&M record label. One of the Brasil 66 singers was Lani Hall, later Herb Alpert's wife. Sergio was unhappy when Herb stole Lani away from the group. Mendes performed his biggest hit “The Look of Love” for Presidents Richard Nixon and Lyndon B. Johnson. In the 1970s his career stalled. I asked him about that. He had the hit Olympia which was used as the theme song for the Olympic games in 1984.
Mr. T plays T.S. Turner who was jailed for a crime he didn't commit and now works for a lawyer who got him out as an investigator. In this episode, they help a Vietnamese family who is being shaken down by some very young Chinese loan sharks or something. T.S. gets to the bottom of it and saves the day, of course. Check it out!
