The 1970s era cool just wafted off of Dave Parker, the gigantic Pirates slugger who was one of the best, if not THE BEST players in baseball in the last half of that decade. Parker's persona, his play, and his essence were all larger than life and are still clear almost 50 years later. That bigness, however, led to problems later in his career, both on and off the field, but ultimately set up a fine career denoument as a productive DH, and a Hall of Fame induction scheduled for later this month. Commemorating the passing of the great Cobra, Mike and Bill look back at a pretty impressive, though flawed, career and person.  Plus, happy birthday to Cy Blanton and Gene Alley! Comprised of members of TOTO and MEN AT WORK, this was better than could be expected for a free concert in the park! Not only does Ringo look and sound amazing for 84 years old, the band is spectacular, with each artist getting to play songs from their vast catalogues. Admittedly, Colin Hay from MEN AT WORK was the guy I was most stoked about seeing - and he did not disappoint. Although, I was really hoping to hear Overkill! And Steve Lukather is a savage guitar player, but seeing it in person was a sight to behold. This is a quick episode, with some details of our AWFUL travel experiences, the challenges of aging and ailing parents, and how sobriety occasionally leads to some lowkey FOMO.If you get a chance to catch the MEN AT WORK, TOTO, Christopher Cross tour - take it!

Hey, it's war time again, Slackers! This week, we explore the persistent shadow of World War III as a defining theme for Generation X, shaped by decades of global tensions and media narratives. From Cold War nuclear anxieties to modern geopolitical flashpoints, we examine how the press periodically declared global conflict “imminent,” reflecting the uncertainty of Gen X's formative years. These apocalyptic warnings became a cultural touchstone, capturing the unease of a generation raised amid superpower rivalries and shifting global orders. We briefly touch on key Middle Eastern events, such as regional upheavals in the late 1970s and 1980s, which fueled fears of broader conflict (sound familiar?). These moments, alongside other global crises, prompted headlines warning of World War III as media outlets amplified international rivalries. We discuss how this coverage, blending genuine concern with sensationalism, shaped Gen X's worldview, fostering skepticism and resilience in the face of existential threats. The media often framed global events as tipping points for catastrophe, from Cold War close calls to modern proxy conflicts. We explore how these narratives, in print and on air, tapped into collective anxieties about the fragility of peace, resonating deeply with a generation straddling analog and digital eras. The recurring specter of global war became a backdrop to Gen X's coming-of-age, shaping their perspectives on power and stability. The persistent threat of World War III, whether real or exaggerated, has left an indelible mark on Gen X's cultural and political outlook.

As a kid, she was encouraged by her parents to sing, play music, and write, but she wasn't allowed to be “herself.” Alienated, she hid her heart and learned to become a stranger in her own skin as the torment of early childhood taught her to mistrust everyone, especially herself. She's a multiglot: author, ghostwriter, mentor, public speaker, and communications entrepreneur who has lived in five countries for over twenty-five years. Starting in Japan from 1977 to 1984, she owned a talent and booking agency, introduced punk rock, was a DJ and, music journalist. In 1978, T Bear signed with RCA Records and released Red, Hot & Blue that featured Les Dudek, Billy Squier, and the Brecker Brothers. He has shared the stage with Richie Havens, Odetta, The Doobie Brothers and Jeff Beck. Domestic responsibilities and a struggle to regain his sobriety, which he did in 1983, forced him to put his music career on hold. He became instrumental in developing the Musicians Picnic, serving on its board of directors, which led to the creation of Musicians Assistance Program, now part of MusiCares Foundation. T Bear credits his late wife for encouraging his comeback. After a self-imposed hiatus from the music industry that lasted nearly three decades, T Bear, aka Richard T Bear, keyboardist, vocalist, songwriter, returns with a new album, Fresh Bear Tracks, released on Quarto Valley Records. A blend of blues, soul and rock with a who's who of special guests including Stephen Stills, Robby Krieger, Edgar Winter, Tom Scott, Walter Trout, Hutch Hutchinson, Laurence Juber, and more. Produced by Grammy Award winner Tony Braunagel, Fresh Bear Tracks was recorded at Robby Krieger's studio in Los Angeles. instagram.com/richard_tbearContact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!

Bob Barry's Unearthed Interviews

But Vic's career spans decades, from classic films to unforgettable TV guest spots.  He was a character who could do it all…tough, funny, and always unforgettable. 240-Robert is a lot like "CHiPs" except it is along the coast and deals with water and cliff based emergencies. You have two guys who are buds and help people, but you also have a helicopter and a pilot to add to the mix. It was surprising to us this show didn't make it. Check it out!

Bob Barry's Unearthed Interviews

Alright, creatures of the airwaves, and podcast people of impeccable taste, cancel your boring plans because today's episode is bringing back memories you have surely forgotten. This man stormed the charts in the swingin' sixties with his cheeky charm and one unforgettable falsetto that had everyone saying, “You Turn Me On.” That's right, before Spotify, playlists, and TikTok trends, this man was topping the Billboard Top 100 and bringing the English Invasion straight to America's front door. So, let's travel back in time with the maestro of melodies, from ragtime to rock n roll, Ian Whitcomb. We caught up with Ian in the middle of a tour with Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Bob Barry's Unearthed Interviews

Welcome…I'm going to give you a trivia question that I'll bet you will not know the answer to.  Who was the voice of John Lennon in the animated film “Yellow Submarine?” He is a man whose talent has graced the big screen. And he has written some thrilling novels. He had unforgettable roles in classics like “A Clockwork Orange” and “The Italian Job.” But he was also a bestselling author, a storyteller with a brilliant sense of humor, and an artist with a fascinating career. John Clive was a fantastic guest that will make you laugh, think, and be entertained.

You're supposed to be safe at home. Why wouldn't you be? And that sense of comfort must be even greater if “home” is a beautiful house you built yourself, where you live happily with your family in a town where you're successful and respected. You'd have no reason at all to think that someone was watching you with binoculars through the trees, their heart burning ever hotter with rage, ever closer to exploding with murderous fury. Ponch and Jon have some run-ins with, what we like to call, a wheelchair gang. They are driving recklessly, antagonizing people and a street fair, and almost rolling into the street with a girl. Turns out the dudes are okay guys since they help out a rehab center. Also, some guy's kid gets hit by a car and the wheelchair gang ends up finding the guy. Then, to top it off, the wheelchair gang ends up getting in a chase with the father and they all crash CHiPs style. It's a wild ride!
