Where It All Began - Week 2 - The Creature In All of Us - June 8, 2025 | Crossland Community Church
In a city as vibrant and diverse as Hong Kong, we're reminded daily of the beauty and challenge of inclusion. As we reflect on Acts 15:19, we see a powerful call: to tear down the barriers—visible and invisible—that keep people from experiencing the fullness of God's love. Hong Kong's story is one of many cultures, faiths, and journeys coming together; and it is a reminder that real inclusion means more than just tolerance—it means actively removing obstacles, opening doors, and making faith accessible to all, regardless of background or circumstance. Let's be ignited by this vision and be the ones who make it easier for others to encounter hope, community, and grace. If you are new to Community Church, WELCOME! We would love to get to know you. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question. The church sent them on their way, and as they traveled through Phoenicia and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles had been converted. This news made all the believers very glad. When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and elders, to whom they reported everything God had done through them. Then some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up and said, “The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to keep the law of Moses.” The apostles and elders met to consider this question. After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: “Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith. Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.” The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them. When they finished, James spoke up. “Brothers,” he said, “listen to me. Simon has described to us how God first intervened to choose a people for his name from the Gentiles. The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written: “‘After this I will return and rebuild David's fallen tent. Its ruins I will rebuild, and I will restore it, that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, even all the Gentiles who bear my name, says the Lord, who does these things'—things known from long ago. “It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood. For the law of Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.”

Matthew 18:21-22 NIV21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.Betrayal refers to the breaking of trust, loyalty, or confidence by someone close or entrusted with responsibility. It involves a breach of expectations, often resulting in feelings of anger, sadness, confusion, and vulnerability. Betrayal can manifest in various forms, including infidelity, deceit, disloyalty, abandonment, and betrayal of secrets or confidences.1. Jesus was Betrayed by Judas Matthew 26:50 NIV50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.” Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him.Matthew 16:23 — 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”John 12:6 NIVHe did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.Matthew 27:38 KJV38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.If the enemy can't stop you + your purpose he will stall you with pain to prevent purpose.2. Jesus was Beat by others who hated him.3. Jesus Bled in front of everyone. Jesus Acknowledged His Pain.Matthew 27:46 NIV46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”)Note: You can't heal what you won't feel and you can't feel what you won't admit. 2. Jesus Pray for those who hurt Him.Mathew 5:43-45 — 43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven…The command to pray for your enemies isn't about them— Its spiritual conditioning so your heart doesn't calcify. 3. Jesus Forgave. Luke 23:34 NIV — 34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. Can you receive the blood of Jesus as full and satisfactory payment for what they did to you?
When ambition and pressure run high, it's easy to chase after success, recognition, and security—especially when so much feels uncertain. But in these times, we're reminded that true strength isn't always found in pushing forward at all costs. Jesus calls us not just to hustle for the world's rewards, but to pause and ask: What is the cost of winning everything if we lose ourselves in the process? Retreat isn't weakness—it's wisdom. It's a chance to reconnect with our purpose, to stand firm in faith, and to remember that our worth isn't measured by titles or possessions, but by the health of our souls. He had been that way from birth and had never walked. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed and called out, “Stand up on your feet!” At that, the man jumped up and began to walk. When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!” Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker. The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them. But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: “Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human, like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them. In the past, he let all nations go their own way. Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.” Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them. Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.

The hope of the Gospel propels us to consider whether or not the promises of the Kingdom of Heaven are real. If not, do whatever you want to do. If yes, then the difficulties in obtaining the Kingdom of Heaven, as described in the Letter to the Hebrews, are worth any sacrifice.福音的盼望促使我們思考天國的應許是否為真。如果沒有,那就做任何你想做的事。如果是的話,那麼正如《希伯來書》中所描述的, 為了擁有天國所遇到的困難是值得任何犧牲的。

Sometimes, the hardest chains to break are the ones we don't even see—the traditions and mindsets passed down to us. But in Acts 10:28b, we're reminded: “But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean.” In a world where divisions often feel sharper than ever—whether in our city's debates, our workplaces, or even at the dinner table—God calls us to see each person with new eyes. No labels. No walls. Just love. As Hong Kong continues to change and grow, let's be the generation that ignites compassion over criticism, unity over division. Let's break the old ways that keep us apart and step into a future where everyone is welcome at the table. If you are new to Community Church, WELCOME! We would love to get to know you. He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, ‘Cornelius!' Cornelius stared at him in fear. ‘What is it, Lord?' he asked. The angel answered, ‘Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea.' [...] Peter's vision About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds. Then a voice told him, ‘Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.' Surely not, Lord!' Peter replied. ‘I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.' The voice spoke to him a second time, ‘Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.' [...] Peter at Cornelius' house The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. But Peter made him get up. ‘Stand up,' he said, ‘I am only a man myself.' While talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people. He said to them: ‘You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile. But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean. So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?' Cornelius answered: ‘Three days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me and said, “Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.” So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.' Then Peter began to speak: ‘I now realise how true it is that God does not show favouritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.

Many of us have plenty of experiences with math, especially when we were younger. Perhaps some of your memories of what math was like for you in school are unpleasant, to say the least. Yet there are many people who are passionate about mathematics, especially Christians who see mathematics as the God-given language by which we can better understand not only the physical world around us, but God Himself. Naturalism has no real answers for why mathematics is so useful and even beautiful and practical not only for doing science, but in our everyday lives. And how are beauty and mathematics linked? What do beauty and math tell us about God Himself? This week we wrap up our conversation with youth leader, math professor, friend of Watchman Fellowship and Christian apologist Paige Lehrmann. Paige will share with us her passion about mathematics, beauty, and how we can incorporate them in our defense for the hope that is in us (1 Peter 3:15). Paige Lehrmann is the Director of Student Ministries at St. Andrew's Community Church in Oklahoma City and a student at Dallas Theological Seminary. She earned her B.A. in Philosophy and Mathematics from Oklahoma Baptist University, where she completed an interdisciplinary thesis on the Trinity. Paige went on to pursue graduate studies in mathematics at the University of Oklahoma and has taught as an adjunct professor at Mid-America Christian University. She has presented at apologetics conferences on topics such as the Trinity, the divinity of Christ, and theistic arguments from beauty. Through her work, she hopes to help others think deeply about faith, truth, and the beauty of the Gospel. You may contact Paige via email at Paige.lehrmann@gmail.com. How A Biblical Miracle WorksWhen there is a need, sensed by a few, and each individual understands his responsibilityand gives his all, regardless of the odds, then Jesus works a miracle.Supper for Five ThousandThe apostles then rendezvoused with Jesus and reported on all that they had done and taught.Jesus said, “Come off by yourselves; let's take a break and get a little rest.” For there wasconstant coming and going. They didn't even have time to eat.So they got in the boat and went off to a remote place by themselves. Someone saw themgoing and the word got around. From the surrounding towns people went out on foot, running, and got there ahead of them. When Jesus arrived, he saw this huge crowd. At the sign of them, his heart broke—like sheep with no shepherd they were. He went right to work teaching them. When his disciples thought this had gone on long enough—it was not quite late in theday—they interrupted: “We are a long way out in the country, and it's very late. Pronounce abenediction and send these folks off so they can get some supper.”Jesus said, “You do it. Fix supper for them.”They replied, “Are you serious? You want us to go spend a fortune on food for theirsupper?”But he was quite serious. “How many loaves of bread do you have? Take an inventory.”That didn't take long. “Five,” they said, “plus two fish.”Jesus got them all to sit down in groups of fifty or a hundred—they looked like apatchwork quilt of wildflowers spread out on the green grass! He took the five loaves and twofish, lifted his face to heaven in prayer, blessed, broke, and gave the bread to the disciples, andthe disciples in turn gave it to the people.
