TVC 718.5: Stefanie Powers talks to Ed about why her experience as a contract player at Columbia Pictures at the start of her career was like "a finishing school for actors"; working with Ava Gardner on Maggie (CBS, 1986), a pilot for a series that marked Gardner's final screen appearance (the pilot, however, never aired); and why James Garner ranks alongside Robert Wagner as among Stefanie's favorite co-stars. (Stefanie starred opposite Garner in "The Red Easy Red Dog," a second-season episode of The Rockford Files.) Stefanie Powers will reunite with McLintock! co-star Patrick Wayne for the first time in sixty years for a one-performance-only benefit production of A.R. Gurney's Love Letters that will take place on Sunday, Jan. 11 on the Debbie Reynolds Main Stage at the historic El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood, CA beginning at 1pm. Proceeds will support the efforts of the William Holden Wildlife Foundation. For tickets and more information, call (818) 508-4200 or go to ElPortalTheatre.com. Stefanie Powers is also featured in Vision for the Future: Capturing Inspiring Stories from Leaders and Changemakers, a recently released anthology eBook that profiles twenty-five visionaries who not only are making a significant impact in their respective fields, but are dedicated to making the world a better place through hope, action, and lasting change. We're back! We watch the 1969 movie Marlowe, starring James Garner, Rockford Files alums-to-be Rita Moreno and William Daniels as well as Carroll O'Connor and Bruce Lee. An adaptation of the Raymond Chandler story "Little Sister," contemporary reviewers seemed to find it lacking as compared to the classic Humphrey Bogart interpretation of Phillip Marlowe, but we really enjoyed it! Of course we are coming to it with Rockford on our minds, and it's fun to see the precursors to character traits and attitudes that end fully developed over 6 seasons of television. #GoodBar #history #truecrimeIn this episode we feature a return guest from 2021, Deb Berry, and we will discuss the 1970s fictional book and film Looking For Mr Goodbar as well as the actual case that was its inspiration and the reporter, Lacey Fosburgh, who covered it.Travels With the Dark: Stories from humans in the “Limit-Experience”This “special” episode is the first in what promises to be a series concerning real occurrences of human beings when they are brought into or more aptly, up against “limit-experience”, a phrase from French and German philosophers that attempts to describe in the most general way what human beings undergo when they are thrust into situations that push them to their limits and conditions of maximum intensity. While originally this was intended to be a series in the “True Crime” genre  I wondered to myself if subject and theme could extended outward. It might not even only encompass the most negative aspect of human experience.I have been fascinated with the so-called "Goodbar" case yet I loved and knew about the 1977 movie and then the novel before I even knew that it concerned a real woman and her story - Roseann Quinn. It was genuine delight to talk with Deb on the subject and I honestly can't think of any better collaborator for this episode.Notes from our special guest, Deb BerryOn this week's episode, we're joined by Madame B (aka Deb) for a deep dive into the 1973 murder of Roseann Quinn, the case that inspired the Judith Rossner book “Looking for Mr. Goodbar,” which was later adapted to the film starring Diane Keaton in a sharp turn against her previous role as Annie Hall and a young Richard Gere in his stunning breakout role. While the book and film have generated much discourse over the years, most of it has revolved around Quinn's victimology, with little discussion of her killer, John Wayne Wilson, and his respective background, psychopathology and motives. So today, Mitch and Deb draw upon another book about the Quinn case, “Closing Time: The True Story of the ‘Goodbar' Murder” by the late New York Times reporter Lacey Fosburgh, to explore the lesser-discussed aspects of the crime which occurred on the Upper West Side of Manhattan during the height of an era of cultural- and social upheaval in America. Set against the backdrop of the early 1970s with the forces of the sexual revolution and second-wave feminism behind it, the Quinn murder was a perfect storm of social, cultural, psychological and even religious factors that begs examination of this complex landscape and its relevance to the murder.More about amazing Deb:Madame B (aka Deb) grew up in Chicago during the 1970s when it was disco balls, Cubs games, deep-dish pizza—and the occasional serial killer hiding in plain sight as a birthday-party clown-for-hire. Like a lot of girls at that time, she loved roller-skating, “Laverne & Shirley” and “Donny Osmond” (and she had the purple socks to prove it). But beneath her feathered hair and Bee Gees T-shirt was a secret obsession she didn't dare share with anyone—not her parents, not her teachers, not even her best friends: murder. In her public life, she swooned right along with her girlfriends over Leif Garrett and Scott Baio in issues of “Tiger Beat,” but in secret, she read “Helter Skelter” and devoured every detective show the ‘70s had to offer—“Kojak”, “The Rockford Files”, “Starsky & Hutch”, “Beretta”, “Ironside” and “Hawaii Five-0”, just to name a few. She came to see these shows not just as entertainment, but as something that held the key to understanding the danger that lurked right outside her door.Back then, being into true crime wasn't just uncool—it was weird, creepy, and not a thing that girls (or anyone) are supposed to be into. She believes you can dive into the darkest corners of human behavior without glamorizing or mythologizing it, and maybe even laugh about it now and then, as long as you know where the punchlines end.

"Our mother was so aware of how important it was for us to treat each other well and she just led with such a loving graceful presence.  She was the quintessential mom. She was just warm and loving and forgiving and nurturing. She taught us to love and be loved," reflects Amy."To be loving and kind to one another" Amy explains, "mom gave me the gift of solice and comfort. She was happy being in the shadows. In big gatherings ...Amy says mom gave her the  gifts of curiosity and independence. She considers herself a late bloomer. Betty was happy that Amy was able to move 3000 miles away on her own terms and create and live your own dreams.Nancy shares a wonderful story of a mother's love for her daughter. Nancy was a punk rocker and was heckled by some local teens, but Betty went full on riot act and defended her daughter and her orange hair. Betty stood up for her daughter. She taught Nancy how to stand up for herself and not let anyone take advantage of you.According to my guests, their mother had a very quiet and kind demeanor yet the Harrington kids had a phrase regarding their mother "don't mess with my chickens."  "What you should do, is....," was one of their mom's familiar phrases for Nancy and her siblings . Their mother had studied to be an art teacher, had children and she was a substitute teacher at her daughter's Catholic school. She taught her children all kinds of things without the help of the internet. It didn't exist back then, but she was a wonderful natural teacher. When Nancy and Amy's parents met, Betty and her family represented everything their father did not have. Their dad, one of nine children lost his mom as a baby and his father, my guest's grandfather, couldn't keep a stable household. My guest's parents were able to pass on the significance of a safe and loving family environment. And their mother became the shield that protected her children from any issues that would arise. The Passionistas Equality Summit happens annually focusing on marginalized women from their community. These women wanted someone who had their b ack. Launched the Passionistas Project Sisterhood in March 2024. Women can come and be themselves and lift themselves up. It's not just business networking, it's personal growth and social impact. Women don't need to show up with a business card and be all buttoned up and pretend everything.Amy says this is a story of a woman who put family before everything including herself. Taught her children how to love one another other and be good stewards in the world. The Harrington house was a place where any and all kids who needed a place where they felt safe were welcome. From the time I was little, we had friends who were gay, different ethnic backgrounds, the kids who's parents worked all night and had no dinner. we learned that  our lives were richer because we knew all these people and their lives were richer because they were accepted, explains Amy.  Our mother was a loving and caring human being, possibly the most loving and caring being you could possibly imagine.  Nancy adds "she was someone who loved unconditionally and she gone too soon."Amy and Nancy feel that the common bond that holds their family together, the driving force in all of their lives was based on creativity.  Both mom and dad were very creative. Had she been born in a different era, she would have been Indiana Jones. She also love the simple things in life including ice cream and cooking. Both my guests agree that their mother encouraged all her children "to dream big and go for it." She wanted her children to be themselves. Betty loved her children for who they were.*Women's Equality Day is Monday, August 25th. John Evans was one of Howard Browne's many pseudonyms Even during his lifetime, Howard Browne (1908-1999) was not well known outside of his given fields. His novels, including his best detective fiction, were written under pseudonyms, and his work as editor and Hollywood writer, through credited, remained mostly unknown, except by those in the business. During his long lifetime Browne published hundreds of stories in science fiction and detective magazines, along with several novels. He wrote dozens of television shows including Mission Impossible, Run for Your Life, Maverick and Cheyenne, and three of his film scripts were produced: Portrait of a Mobster with Vic Morrow; The St. Valentine's Day Massacre with Jason Robards and George Segal; and Capone, starring Ben Gazzara. He also wrote radio scripts in the late 1940s. His day job, before he went to Hollywood, was as an associate editor under Ray Palmer and then editor for Ziff-Davis pulp magazines, which included Amazing Stories, Fantastic Adventures and other lesser known fiction magazines. Richard A. Lupoff interviewed Howard Browne at Browne's home in Southern California some time in the mid 1980s (the cassettes aren't labeled). This was Browne's only radio interview, and only the second extant interview on record (the other appeared in Locus Magazine). After he retired, Howard Browne taught a couple of college classes and worked on a big Chicago novel that never saw publication. Most of his work is out of print today, though his four noir novels, in the style of Raymond Chandler and featuring a detective named Paul Pine, are available in a small press edition published this past spring by Haffner Press, with an introduction by Richard A. Lupoff. If you go to Imdb, you'll find a long list of his television shows, many of which can be found streaming. Curiously, his novel Thin Air formed the basis for his first television credit, on the show Climax in 1955, and his last, for an episode of Simon and Simon in 1982. Thin Air was also the basis for an episode on yet a third program, The Rockford Files. Two minor points: Browne says he never wrote for Hawaiian Eye, yet IMDb claims he wrote an episode, and he says he retired in 1973 but his credits extend to 1975. Happy Sunday! Welcome to Heal Squad's The Sunday Set Up. Life lessons to help you start the week. This week, we unpack three dreams, one AEW stadium, two wrestling legends, and a whole lot of emotional payload. What begins as a walk through a rundown arena turns into a masterclass on loyalty, guilt, and the silent wars we wage within. We break down what it means when shame meets strategy—and when you finally choose not to get involved. We talk about the moments we betray ourselves just to stay in someone else's favor, and the quiet power of walking away without burning down the stadium. We meet the part of you that once served power just to be seen and the evolving self that now serves love and allows itself to be. We revisit dream encounters with Adam West's Batman, a bare-chested Jim Rockford from the Rockford Files, and a Thunderbird that's not just a car—it's a symbol of the family that left and the wise feminine spirit who told you to stay. We reflect on saying no with compassion, breaking cycles without breaking hearts, and protecting your inner AEW: the part of you that builds quietly without applause. This isn't just dream interpretation—it's emotional renovation. You're not stuck. You're integrating. You're not being left behind. You're being rerouted. Sunday Set Up Bonus: Jim Rockford's budget-friendly guest appearance, the Jesus Christ AM Radio Hour, standing up to your father-in-law for his own good, and the eternal truth about lifetime guarantees (they're all ********, and that's why they work). Remember: you owe the past no allegiance. Only the present, your presence. TVC 689.2: Dore Page, author of Leslie Stevens Goes to Hollywood: Daystar Productions, Kate Manx and the Making of Private Property, talks to Ed and guest co-host Chuck Harter about Stoney Burke (ABC, 1962-1963), the “art house” look at the lives of 20th-century rodeo riders starring Jack Lord, Bruce Dern, and Warren Oates and produced by Leslie Stevens that ABC canceled after one season—despite garnering a 38 share—partly because the show was considered too ethereal for sponsors to get behind. Other topics this segment include how Warren Oates' character on Stoney Burke can be considered a forerunner to Angel Martin (the character that Stuart Margolin later played on The Rockford Files), and how Stevens came to pattern his independent production company, Daystar Productions, after Quinn Martin Productions once Stevens decided to focus on developing projects for television. 8 Movies again, annnnnnnd here goes.
1. (Halls of Anger 1970) Calvin Lockhart, a young Jeff Bridges and Janet MacLachlan star in this serious look at racism and teaching. Ed Asner makes yet another appearance too.
2. (Skin Game 1971) Same director here as the first movie. Rockford Files and Iron Eagle star with Mom from Webster in yet another film having a heavy dialogue about racism. This one tries to Trojan horse it in with some comedy, does it work, let's see. Oh look, Ed Asner.
3. (Aaron loves Angela 1975) Where the heck is Ed Asner, sigh. Gordon Parks jr. directs this rad 70's film lookin at young love and race, using Romeo and Juliet as a basic template. Irene Cara is in the house.
4.(Hard Times 1975) Warriors director Walter Hill is here, making a film where James Coburn needs to not gamble so much, damn, There's Charles Bronson and boxing too. Bronson is glowing and so expressive, an amazing on screen presence, NOT. 5. (Special Day 1977) Oh my, Italian cinema can be tricky, at least the 70's Italian films that we have seen which are few, but whoa, tricky is a too nice way of saying there's disgusting treatment of women in these films. This film, though not perfect, is an exception, and with some unexpected queer content. Sophia Loren is here, as well as Marcello Mastroianni (who appears to be in every Italian film ever) oh also the dean from Animal House. Special Day is directed by Ettore Scola. Pretty epic stuff.
6.(Skateboard the movie 1978) Silly, dumb, quickly made cash grab about Skateboarding, that I really like and even own the soundtrack. If you like the subject, and fun B movies, this is a win for me, let us tell you all about it. You might have more fun listening with the commentary track on, which means you'd have to buy it, and if yer that interested, you probably already have it. Teen heart throb Leif Garret is here and is the only one who can't skate great. Here also is Kathleen Lloyd of The Car.
7. (The Outsider 1979) Heavy film here about the troubles. It sure got some great images on film in Northern Ireland. Brits out!
8. (Penitentiary 1979) This is final film of rad director Jamaa Fanaka that we get to review. Here Sweet Pea tries to survive prison. Please see also Emma Mae 1976.
ok enjoy the show, thanks for listening.

Rita Moreno is an absolute living legend who is celebrating her 93rd birthday and about eight decades in Hollywood. She came to New York with her mom from Puerto Rico when she was five years old. She got started in dance classes at age nine and started her career in the entertainment industry quickly thereafter.  She's been in so many classic movies, like The King and I, Singin' in the Rain, and West Side Story. She was the first Latina to win an Oscar. She became the second woman and third person to win an EGOT. A year later, she won a second Emmy for her work on The Rockford Files.  Rita has done countless guest appearances, was a lead in a bunch of TV shows, but what our Millennial hearts will care about the most is that she provided the voice of the title character in the PBS Series, Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?. A tribute Barbie of her was just released based on her look that she wore when she won an Oscar in 1962.To this day, she is one of the busiest stars in show business. Nathan and Eppy start from the beginning with S1E1 The Kirkoff Case. Jim's client is a real slimeball who's been arraigned, but not prosecuted, for murdering his own parents. The money is too good for Jim to drop the case, and then it gets personal when he takes a beating from not a "goon", but a "labor organizer". This series premiere episode shows us that this PI gets beat up a lot, but he doesn't quit - and he's going to be a hell of a lot of fun to watch. Add in a noir-inflected plot and great casting, we're confident in saying that if you wanted to start watching The Rockford Files, this would be a good place to start! Take a journey with us into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's a signpost up ahead: your next stop... THE WORLD OF H.M. WYNANT!!! H.M Wynant is an actor who, although you may not be familiar with his name, you have probably seen hundreds of times. He has an IMDB bursting list of credits and has appeared in almost every radio, stage, television, and film genre. His massive resume features numerous westerns including  BONANZA, WAGON TRAIN, MAVERICK, SHOTGUN SLADE, and THE BIG VALLEY, popular dramas like PERRY MASON, 77 SUNSET STRIP, THE ROCKFORD FILES, QUINCY, DALLAS, and THE WEST WING, the spy shows I SPY, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, and GET SMART, and even the somewhat controversial WWII comedy, HOGAN'S HEROES. Yes, he almost sent Colonel Klink to the Russian Front!   Wynant has also worked with a veritable "who's who" of Hollywood legends including Charles  Bronson, John Carradine, Clint Eastwood, Errol Flynn, Samuel Fuller, Clark Gable Katharine Hepburn, Burt Lancaster, Bruce Lee, Sal Mineo, Laurence Olivier, Elvis Presley, Phil Silvers, Rod Steiger, and a whole "Walk of Fame" more! So you better believe he has some stories to share!    But this is MONSTER PARTY, and what guest would be worth his salt with a slew of genre credits?    Wynant drove Ricardo Montalban to suicide in CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, managed to keep a plane in the air while battling supernatural forces in THE HORROR AT 37,000 FEET, helped Mr. Freeze (Eli Wallach) take on The Caped Crusader in the 60's BATMAN TV series, and infamously freed The Devil to wreak havoc in the world in the classic episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE, THE HOWLING MAN.   Providing us entry into THE WORLD OF H.M. WYNANT is a past guest with an amazing resume of his own. He's an acclaimed author, playwright, graphic novelist, screenwriter, and film director, who happens to have written the definitive Wynant biography, H.M. WYNANT: YOU MUST BELIEVE! Please welcome back... STEVEN PEROS! (THE CAT'S MEOW, FOOTPRINTS (with H.M. Nathan and Eppy bid a bittersweet farewell to Rita with the final Rockford Files TV Move: If It Bleeds... It Leads (1999). This was a hard one! Rita's husband, schoolteacher Ernie (Hal Linden) is falsely accused of a series of child sexual assaults, and while Jim helps to clear his name, it's not enough to prevent a series of tragedies. While this one has wonderful performances and some great spots of the Rockfordishness we always love, the content and tone made it tough to say we "enjoyed" it. It did give us great closure on "Rita and Jim, their whole thing" but, unfortunately, was not the warm victory lap to bid farewell to our friends that we kinda wanted. Content Warnings: the plot is about a child rapist, scenes include child endangerment and there is a (relatively) graphic suicide. We have another podcast: Plus Expenses.
