TVC 737.1: Part 2 of a conversation that began last week with David Spencer, award-winning musical dramatist, author, critic, musical theatre teacher, and the author of The Novelizers, a deep dive into the world of media tie-in writing that not only introduces readers to many of the people who have adapted film and TV screenplays into original tie-in novels, while also making the case that tie-in writing is an honorable tradition with artistry of its own. The Novelizers is available through Bear Manor Media as well as Amazon.com. Topics this segment include a discussion of the Rockford Files tie-in novels written by Stuart Kaminsky in the mid-1990s (and how they reflect the older Jim Rockford, as portrayed in the CBS reunion movies of the same era), and the difference between "high context" dialogue and "low context" dialogue.
Physical media has some upgraded gems this week so Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski get into some appreciative conversation. They include a James Garner detective tale that may have been the precursor to The Rockford Files. The final film of Wes Craven's career gets relitigated over its decade-long reevaluation. Christopher Walken delivers maybe the nuttiest performance of his career. Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant close out ‘90s rom-coms in style. Joe Dante and Tom Hanks take a skewer to suburban placation that may be even more relevant today. Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy are one of the great comic pairings ever in an all-timer Hollywood satire. Finally, on the eve of Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg gets an 8-film box set. Kibbe & Friends Show #366 revisits a classic Dukes of Hazzard episode the gang originally reviewed nearly 10 years ago — Season 1 Episode 10, “Deputy Dukes!” Before heading back to Hazzard County, the crew catches up on Corndog's daughter graduating high school, Rob's busy summer racing schedule with Dallas Kibbe Racing, and a surprising firsthand look at the new electric Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack. Bernie on the Weather debuts a hilarious new WKRP-inspired intro sponsored by Lexani Tires, Lionhart Tires, and Rolling Big Power Tires, while Corndog's Tech Corner helps troubleshoot Mopar ignition problems on a 1972 Dodge Charger. The guys also cover Hot Wheels collecting crazes, Tesla Cybertruck recalls, the upcoming Rockford Files reboot, and GM's confusing LS6 revival before diving into “Deputy Dukes.” In this Season 1 favorite, Bo and Luke temporarily become deputies after Rosco gets suspended, only to find themselves trapped inside another one of Boss Hogg's schemes. The crew breaks down the episode's early-series charm, classic patrol car action, and the chemistry that helped make the Dukes of Hazzard such an iconic show. The post K&F Show #366: Bo & Luke Become the Law // Dukes VIDEO Review S1E10 “Deputy Dukes” first appeared on The Muscle Car Place.

TVC 718.5: Stefanie Powers talks to Ed about why her experience as a contract player at Columbia Pictures at the start of her career was like "a finishing school for actors"; working with Ava Gardner on Maggie (CBS, 1986), a pilot for a series that marked Gardner's final screen appearance (the pilot, however, never aired); and why James Garner ranks alongside Robert Wagner as among Stefanie's favorite co-stars. (Stefanie starred opposite Garner in "The Red Easy Red Dog," a second-season episode of The Rockford Files.) Stefanie Powers will reunite with McLintock! co-star Patrick Wayne for the first time in sixty years for a one-performance-only benefit production of A.R. Gurney's Love Letters that will take place on Sunday, Jan. 11 on the Debbie Reynolds Main Stage at the historic El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood, CA beginning at 1pm. Proceeds will support the efforts of the William Holden Wildlife Foundation. For tickets and more information, call (818) 508-4200 or go to ElPortalTheatre.com. Stefanie Powers is also featured in Vision for the Future: Capturing Inspiring Stories from Leaders and Changemakers, a recently released anthology eBook that profiles twenty-five visionaries who not only are making a significant impact in their respective fields, but are dedicated to making the world a better place through hope, action, and lasting change. Vision for the Future recognizes Stefanie for her work with The William Holden Wildlife Foundation. Vision for the Future is available for free at visionforthefuture.ai.

We're back! We watch the 1969 movie Marlowe, starring James Garner, Rockford Files alums-to-be Rita Moreno and William Daniels as well as Carroll O'Connor and Bruce Lee. An adaptation of the Raymond Chandler story "Little Sister," contemporary reviewers seemed to find it lacking as compared to the classic Humphrey Bogart interpretation of Phillip Marlowe, but we really enjoyed it! Of course we are coming to it with Rockford on our minds, and it's fun to see the precursors to character traits and attitudes that end fully developed over 6 seasons of television. If you like The Rockford Files, you'll probably dig it! Want more Rockford Files trivia, notes and ephemera? Check out the Two Hundred a Day Rockford Files Files (http://tinyurl.com/200files)! We appreciate all of our listeners, but offer a special thanks to our patrons (https://www.patreon.com/twohundredaday). Thank you Detectives, Gumshoes and everyone else who supports the show! We will continue posting our occasional episodes over there, which include the screenshots discussed in this episode. So apprehensive is my nature that, as a boy, before our nightly entertainment was in any way under our control, if I saw that "The Rockford Files" was going to be a two-part episode, I would go to my room to read or listen to music! I didn't and still don't like suspense! But what else is worrying, other than not knowing the future and being fearful of what is going to happen next?"Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. #GoodBar #history #truecrimeIn this episode we feature a return guest from 2021, Deb Berry, and we will discuss the 1970s fictional book and film Looking For Mr Goodbar as well as the actual case that was its inspiration and the reporter, Lacey Fosburgh, who covered it.Travels With the Dark: Stories from humans in the “Limit-Experience”This “special” episode is the first in what promises to be a series concerning real occurrences of human beings when they are brought into or more aptly, up against “limit-experience”, a phrase from French and German philosophers that attempts to describe in the most general way what human beings undergo when they are thrust into situations that push them to their limits and conditions of maximum intensity. While originally this was intended to be a series in the “True Crime” genre I wondered to myself if subject and theme could extended outward. It might not even only encompass the most negative aspect of human experience.I have been fascinated with the so-called "Goodbar" case yet I loved and knew about the 1977 movie and then the novel before I even knew that it concerned a real woman and her story - Roseann Quinn. It was genuine delight to talk with Deb on the subject and I honestly can't think of any better collaborator for this episode.Notes from our special guest, Deb BerryOn this week's episode, we're joined by Madame B (aka Deb) for a deep dive into the 1973 murder of Roseann Quinn, the case that inspired the Judith Rossner book “Looking for Mr. Goodbar,” which was later adapted to the film starring Diane Keaton in a sharp turn against her previous role as Annie Hall and a young Richard Gere in his stunning breakout role. While the book and film have generated much discourse over the years, most of it has revolved around Quinn's victimology, with little discussion of her killer, John Wayne Wilson, and his respective background, psychopathology and motives. So today, Mitch and Deb draw upon another book about the Quinn case, “Closing Time: The True Story of the ‘Goodbar' Murder” by the late New York Times reporter Lacey Fosburgh, to explore the lesser-discussed aspects of the crime which occurred on the Upper West Side of Manhattan during the height of an era of cultural- and social upheaval in America. Set against the backdrop of the early 1970s with the forces of the sexual revolution and second-wave feminism behind it, the Quinn murder was a perfect storm of social, cultural, psychological and even religious factors that begs examination of this complex landscape and its relevance to the murder.More about amazing Deb:Madame B (aka Deb) grew up in Chicago during the 1970s when it was disco balls, Cubs games, deep-dish pizza—and the occasional serial killer hiding in plain sight as a birthday-party clown-for-hire. Like a lot of girls at that time, she loved roller-skating, “Laverne & Shirley” and “Donny Osmond” (and she had the purple socks to prove it). But beneath her feathered hair and Bee Gees T-shirt was a secret obsession she didn't dare share with anyone—not her parents, not her teachers, not even her best friends: murder. In her public life, she swooned right along with her girlfriends over Leif Garrett and Scott Baio in issues of “Tiger Beat,” but in secret, she read “Helter Skelter” and devoured every detective show the ‘70s had to offer—“Kojak”, “The Rockford Files”, “Starsky & Hutch”, “Beretta”, “Ironside” and “Hawaii Five-0”, just to name a few. She came to see these shows not just as entertainment, but as something that held the key to understanding the danger that lurked right outside her door.Back then, being into true crime wasn't just uncool—it was weird, creepy, and not a thing that girls (or anyone) are supposed to be into. She believes you can dive into the darkest corners of human behavior without glamorizing or mythologizing it, and maybe even laugh about it now and then, as long as you know where the punchlines end.
"Our mother was so aware of how important it was for us to treat each other well and she just led with such a loving graceful presence. She was the quintessential mom. She was just warm and loving and forgiving and nurturing. She taught us to love and be loved," reflects Amy."To be loving and kind to one another" Amy explains, "mom gave me the gift of solice and comfort. She was happy being in the shadows. In big gatherings ...Amy says mom gave her the gifts of curiosity and independence. She considers herself a late bloomer. Betty was happy that Amy was able to move 3000 miles away on her own terms and create and live your own dreams.Nancy shares a wonderful story of a mother's love for her daughter. Nancy was a punk rocker and was heckled by some local teens, but Betty went full on riot act and defended her daughter and her orange hair. Betty stood up for her daughter. She taught Nancy how to stand up for herself and not let anyone take advantage of you.According to my guests, their mother had a very quiet and kind demeanor yet the Harrington kids had a phrase regarding their mother "don't mess with my chickens." "What you should do, is....," was one of their mom's familiar phrases for Nancy and her siblings . Their mother had studied to be an art teacher, had children and she was a substitute teacher at her daughter's Catholic school. She taught her children all kinds of things without the help of the internet. It didn't exist back then, but she was a wonderful natural teacher. When Nancy and Amy's parents met, Betty and her family represented everything their father did not have. Their dad, one of nine children lost his mom as a baby and his father, my guest's grandfather, couldn't keep a stable household. My guest's parents were able to pass on the significance of a safe and loving family environment. And their mother became the shield that protected her children from any issues that would arise. The Passionistas Equality Summit happens annually focusing on marginalized women from their community. These women wanted someone who had their b ack. Launched the Passionistas Project Sisterhood in March 2024. Women can come and be themselves and lift themselves up. It's not just business networking, it's personal growth and social impact. Women don't need to show up with a business card and be all buttoned up and pretend everything.Amy says this is a story of a woman who put family before everything including herself. Taught her children how to love one another other and be good stewards in the world. The Harrington house was a place where any and all kids who needed a place where they felt safe were welcome. From the time I was little, we had friends who were gay, different ethnic backgrounds, the kids who's parents worked all night and had no dinner. we learned that our lives were richer because we knew all these people and their lives were richer because they were accepted, explains Amy. Our mother was a loving and caring human being, possibly the most loving and caring being you could possibly imagine. Nancy adds "she was someone who loved unconditionally and she gone too soon."Amy and Nancy feel that the common bond that holds their family together, the driving force in all of their lives was based on creativity. Both mom and dad were very creative. Had she been born in a different era, she would have been Indiana Jones. She also love the simple things in life including ice cream and cooking. Both my guests agree that their mother encouraged all her children "to dream big and go for it." She wanted her children to be themselves. Betty loved her children for who they were.*Women's Equality Day is Monday, August 25th. Happy Sunday! Welcome to Heal Squad's The Sunday Set Up. Life lessons to help you start the week. This week, we unpack three dreams, one AEW stadium, two wrestling legends, and a whole lot of emotional payload. What begins as a walk through a rundown arena turns into a masterclass on loyalty, guilt, and the silent wars we wage within. We break down what it means when shame meets strategy—and when you finally choose not to get involved. We talk about the moments we betray ourselves just to stay in someone else's favor, and the quiet power of walking away without burning down the stadium. We meet the part of you that once served power just to be seen and the evolving self that now serves love and allows itself to be. We revisit dream encounters with Adam West's Batman, a bare-chested Jim Rockford from the Rockford Files, and a Thunderbird that's not just a car—it's a symbol of the family that left and the wise feminine spirit who told you to stay. We reflect on saying no with compassion, breaking cycles without breaking hearts, and protecting your inner AEW: the part of you that builds quietly without applause. This isn't just dream interpretation—it's emotional renovation. You're not stuck. You're integrating. You're not being left behind. You're being rerouted. Sunday Set Up Bonus: Jim Rockford's budget-friendly guest appearance, the Jesus Christ AM Radio Hour, standing up to your father-in-law for his own good, and the eternal truth about lifetime guarantees (they're all ********, and that's why they work). Remember: you owe the past no allegiance. Only the present, your presence. TVC 689.2: Dore Page, author of Leslie Stevens Goes to Hollywood: Daystar Productions, Kate Manx and the Making of Private Property, talks to Ed and guest co-host Chuck Harter about Stoney Burke (ABC, 1962-1963), the “art house” look at the lives of 20th-century rodeo riders starring Jack Lord, Bruce Dern, and Warren Oates and produced by Leslie Stevens that ABC canceled after one season—despite garnering a 38 share—partly because the show was considered too ethereal for sponsors to get behind. Other topics this segment include how Warren Oates' character on Stoney Burke can be considered a forerunner to Angel Martin (the character that Stuart Margolin later played on The Rockford Files), and how Stevens came to pattern his independent production company, Daystar Productions, after Quinn Martin Productions once Stevens decided to focus on developing projects for television. Leslie Stevens Goes to Hollywood is available through McFarland Books.
