He released a solo album called Shag in 2001.Spin Doctors remained inactive as a band until September 2001, when the original line-up took the stage for the first time since 1994 to play at the closing of legendary New York club Wetlands. My conversation with CHRIS BARRON comes to a close in this final chapter. I finally focused on Chris' 2017 album "Angels and One-Armed Jugglers." In addition to discussing a few of the tracks, Chris shared the details of the alarming loss of his vocal instrument. He also told a couple of cool stories, including one about his song "Too Young To Fade" which eulogizes a good friend. We finished the show on a high note, as Chris gave some pertinent advice for all of us. Interview,
My conversation with CHRIS BARRON continued as he was out for a drive. We revisited the subject of his rock band SPIN DOCTORS, and Chris gave me a taste of how he wrote his two most famous songs "Two Princes" and "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong." From there, we talked some more songwriting, and how he writes today. I also asked him about his lovely wife, and how valuable it is to have her support, and vice-versa. And of course, I played more tracks from his 2017 album "Angels and One-Armed Jugglers. Interview,
Some of my guests are so gracious that they give me enough of their time to fill more than one episode. Such is the case with singer-songwriter CHRIS BARRON who let me interview him as he was out on the road in his Subaru. Chris shares a little bit of the story of his rock band SPIN DOCTORS, including the love-hate relationship with his bandmates (Eric, Aaron & Mark) who are still performing today. He is also a solo artist, so along the way, we talked about songwriting, and I played some tracks from his 2017 album "Angels and One-Armed Jugglers.

Somewhere along the line Chris Barron quite literally lost his voice. The condition, vocal cord paralysis, left Spin Doctors frontman barely able to speak, let alone sing. It was, he confesses, a dark time — one that left him wondering whether a return to music was in the cards at all. It slowly returned, thankfully, and Barron, with the help of doctors and a vocal coach, was able to learn how to sing with a single functioning vocal cord. In 2017, he released his second solo record, Angels and One-Armed Jugglers — the second bit an unintentional nod to his own condition. The condition afforded the singer the opportunity to reflect on his life and career. Perfect timing, really, as the Spin Doctors celebrate their 30th year of existence — a run that’s seen remarkably few lineup changes over the decades.
EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE Scott and Paul chat about why interviewing Chris Barron is a particularly significant milestone for them. PART TWO - 5:18 mark Chris Barron stops by Songcraft World Headquarters to chat about why he calls his musical background a “dog’s breakfast;” what his music teacher told him that blew his mind about songwriting; the reason he doesn’t like Eddie Vedder’s voice; what happened creatively when vocal cord paralysis kept him from being able to sing for many months; what he really thinks about playing “Two Princes” every night; and why, when he was talking to us, he really wanted to be standing on the arm of the couch howling and waving his underwear over his head. Plus, Chris performs two songs live and acoustic! ABOUT CHRIS BARRON Chris Barron is best known as the lead singer of the Spin Doctors whose major label debut album, Pocketful of Kryptonite, spawned the hit singles “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong,” “Two Princes,” “Jimmy Olsen’s Blues,” “What Time is It?” and “How Could You Want Him (When You Know You Could Have Me)?” The album was certified five times platinum and earned the band an American Music Award nomination for Favorite Pop/Rock Album, as well as a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance. The Spin Doctors built a loyal fanbase through relentless touring, including a key stint as members of the H.O.R.D.E. festival alongside Widespread Panic, Blues Traveler, and Phish. Three additional albums followed, including Turn it Upside Down, another platinum release that spawned the charting singles “Cleopatra’s Cat” and “You Let Your Heart Go Too Fast.” The band eventually broke up after Barron experienced vocal cord paralysis and was told he may never sing again. When his voice returned Barron embarked on what he has called "a journeyman songwriting experience," branching out to compose lyrics and music that draw from a variety of genres and influences. He returned to music with his debut solo album, Shag. His most recent release, Angels and One-Armed Jugglers, emerged after yet another struggle with vocal cord paralysis. The album has earned enthusiastic critical reviews and has given Chris an opportunity to pursue a solo career while continuing to perform with a reunited Spin Doctors. The band recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of its formation.

In 1992 the Spin Doctors had an era-defining, cultural touchstone of an album on their hands when their debut, Pocket Full of Kryptonite, finally took off after months of release. It went on to sell over 3 million copies on the back of perennial hits like "Two Princes" and "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong." Unfortunately, as is often the case, the curse of the Sophomore Slump hit them pretty hard when the follow up, 1994's Turn It Upside Down, failed to take hold. Though momentum stalled, the band has carried on releasing great albums over the next 25 years. On November 8th, the band is celebrating 30 years together with a special show at the Brooklyn Bowl in NYC that is sure to make fans very happy. In this chat, frontman Chris Barron discusses the many highs and lows he's experienced over these 30 years, partially being inspired to make music by school chum John Popper of Blues Traveler, what his life is like now, and his recent solo album, 2017's Angels and One-Armed Jugglers. He's a wonderfully funny and frank guy who's totally down to earth. Enjoy! http://spindoctors.com/ http://thechrisbarron.com/
CHRIS BARRON is the acclaimed Spin Doctors frontman. A four-album hot streak in the '90s established them as a heavyweight of the era with 1991's five-times-platinum Pocket Full of Kryptonite' ruling the airwaves with hits “Little Miss Can't Be Wrong” and “Two Princes”. Barron is now a veteran approaching 50, living in a world changed beyond recognition, compelled to write the music that chronicles the here-and-now. His latest ‘Angels and One-Armed Jugglers' is the the culmination of a lifetime's craft and a record both contemporary and classic. KIM RICHEY is a legendary Nashville songcrafter. This two-time Grammy-nominated artist is a storyteller; a weaver of emotions and a tugger of heartstrings. Tender, poetic and aching with life's truths, Kim's songs transport you to her world, where words paint pictures and melodies touch the soul. After a nearly five year hiatus, Richey returns with her eighth studio album, ‘Edgeland'. The term “Edgeland” is defined as the lost zone between urban and rural environments, a concept which mimics Richey's constant fluctuation between the rigid genre definitions of country and Americana music. Chris Barron is the lead singer of the Spin Doctors, who after much perseverance, enjoyed massive success in the early Nineties with hits like “Two Princes” and “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” and the accompanying album, Pocket Full of Kryptonite, which went five times Platinum. Barron took some time out from the band to start work on his second solo record. During the process, he dealt with a paralyzed vocal cord, and the fear that he might never sing again. Thankfully, Barron’s voice returned, and with the help of a bevy of New York’s finest musicians, he’s put together an eleven track song cycle titled Angels and One-Armed Jugglers.Barron takes us through the stories behind several songs, including one about his neighbor who inspired the title of the album. Plus, he talks about the massive success the Spin Doctors enjoyed, as well as the story of "Two Princes."

It produced the big hits Two Princes and Little Can't Be Wrong. The band has recorded six albums over the years and continues to tour. Chris recently finished up a solo album titled Angels and One Armed Jugglers and will hit the road in support of that.
