This week, we lace up our Doc Martins and hike over to the Pacific Northwest to the home of GRUNGE! We discuss bands outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts fondly remember this time, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all US rock n' roll avenues. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. Don't think you like grunge? Then check this out! This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don't think you'll be totally surprised. Many of these groups had similarities with the producers that were chosen, namely, Jack Endino. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Captain Content and Kevin's wheelhouse. As usual, we have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks, and don't forget your flannel!Songs this week include:Green River – “Swallow My Pride” from Dry As A Bone / Rehab Doll (1987)The Nymphs – “Death Of A Scenester” from Nymphs (1991)Dig – “I'll Stay High” from Dig (1993)Mammoth Volume – “Matador” from Noara Dance (2000)Tripping Daisy – “Rocketpop” from I Am An Elastic Firecracker (1995)Coffin Break – “So Long To Reality” from Thirteen (1992)Smash Atoms – “Into The Light” from Smash Atoms (2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store

What a dangerous time we live in when the President personally attacks artists for speaking against America's current fascist regime. The Boss (Bruce Springsteen) spoke truth to power at a recent London show while Taylor Swift weathered another round of the President's weird obsession with her. Tawny and Lisa talk about why they love both artists and how their music has impacted their recoveries. They discuss everything from Ryan Adams covering 1989 to Springsteen's inspiration from Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. And shout out to Neil Young, Eddie Vedder, Jack Antonoff, and all the artists out there speaking up! Music Minute features both artists! Nancy and Sarah discuss a Columbia Journalism Review bombshell about the alleged sexual misdeeds of journalist Wes Lowery, who shot to fame during the Black Lives Matter era and is perhaps best known for popularizing the idea of journalism guided by “moral certainty.” This is hot one! Sarah gets kneejerk over blackout confusion, Nancy doesn't understand “situationships,” and they argue over the definition of “glory hole.” Whether Lowery is guilty of these misdeeds we can't say, but we both hope #metoo stories start to pivot away from “tearing someone down” to pointing to a better way to engage with people you love/bone/covet/teach/mentor/etc.Also discussed:* The latest Mission: Impossible — wanna guess who liked it?* A blender full of stunts, frappéd* When did we start celebrating Memorial Day?* The smell of a nuclear submarine (let's ask Sarah's brother)* SLEEP BUFFET!!!!* Ken Burns' theory on binary thinking shaped by computer code* Fifth Column + Lowery = “exactly what you want from mega-minds”* Buying a woman a drink: Predatory behavior — or kick-ass?* Do people get roofied? Yes, but way less than hype suggests* How dating fell apart* Assholes vs. criminals / regret sex vs. rape* The sad and endless hamster wheel of the compulsively sexual male* When Sarah was a drunk bully …* Slutdom during Nancy's “Eddie Vedder years”* Rise of violence on on the left: To be continued!Plus, Nancy has a request for sociopaths, Sarah makes a hopeless pass at Douglas Murray — and much more!Memorialize the day you became a paid subscriber…

This episode marks the end of The Cobain 50 and El Cancionero de Kurt. After going through all 50 albums from Kurt’s list, we celebrated with an event in KEXP’s Gathering Space with a packed house of fans of Nirvana and the podcast to reflect on the series, what it’s meant to us, and what we’ve learned going through all of this music. Below find translations of the Spanish and Portuguese clips aired throughout the episode. Thank you to everyone who has supported our podcasts. We love you so much, it makes us sick. CLIP #1: Luis Carlos Calanca: “Maybe it made him explode, again in Brazil and worldwide it was Kurt Cobain when the band Nirvana came here. Months later, when Kurt Cobain saw them here, he started saying that the band was sensational. And then all the kids wanted to know about Os Mutantes. Lucinha Barbosa: “That’s how, word of mouth, I think, until '98, the big ones started to pay attention because there was no one to stay, no major record company that advertised didn't have that exactly through the fans themselves, word by word.” CLIP #2: José Bellas: Yes, that's right. The next day interviews were scheduled. I had to interview Dave Grohl. and I spent some time before the show at the house of one… one of the two managers of Los Brujos that was Alejandro Almada and he gave me a record for them. I took it there and I gave it to him (Dave). Anyway, another thing that was going around was that, during Los Brujos' soundcheck, Grohl showed up and went to backtages singing the song, people were saying that before Nirvana went on. CLIP #3: Jorge Francisco Soto Flores: Seattle could be any city in Chile. Seattle is a remote place, a rainy place, a place of forests. We (Chileans) are the end of the world, we are the outsiders. We have barriers that could be the Andes Mountains, the desert, the ice, the Pacific Ocean… It happened at a specific time in the 90s. We were returning to a pseudo-democracy. There is also something about representation with the lyrics in every aspect from pessimism now knowing what is going to happen next and also added to to the fact that Chileans love rock music. They are fans of rock and metal. What reason is there for people to be so fanatical about Chris Cornell that here is a god? About Cobain who is a god; that Eddie Vedder, who is a god; Mark Lineman who is a god. I think that’s the only explanation. I don’t see any other, honestly. From a near-suicidal season while working at Amazon to a healing moment years later in a record store, this episode unpacks how internal stories—if left unchecked—can become prisons. But when named, challenged, and re-authored, they can also become paths to freedom. For Gen Xers who've spent decades carrying stories they didn't choose, this is a masterclass in taking your story back—and choosing what to build next.>>When the Narrative Turns Against You“I repeated ‘I'm stuck' like a mantra—for hours, every week.”Chris reveals how one toxic narrative nearly ended his life, and how a shift in story—triggered by a tragic moment—gave him just enough room to survive.>>From Mental Health Crisis to Narrative Recovery“I believed I was going to die. That became my story.”He shares his journey through depression, chronic pain, and burnout—and the slow, uncomfortable work of rewriting that internal tape.>>The Most Powerful Story He Ever Felt“It started with my boss's tattoo and ended with Eddie Vedder hugging me in a record store.”Chris tells the full-circle story of how a Pearl Jam song became the turning point in his healing—and why storytelling doesn't just change businesses, it changes people.>>Storytelling Is a Risk—and a Return“Most of us tell curated stories. The raw ones? That's where the power is.”He makes a case for telling the stories that aren't polished. Because those are the stories that truly shift our futures—and invite others to shift with us.>>From Blame to Responsibility“I had to stop blaming everyone else for my unhappiness.”Chris opens up about how his marriage nearly ended, and how rewriting his personal narrative—through new inputs and radical honesty—brought him back._____________________Connect with us:Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Chris Hare --Chief Change Officer--Change Ambitiously. This episode will explore a different avenue involving Pearl Jam outside of their live shows. As many know, multiple members of the band are considered avid fans of baseball - most notably Eddie Vedder. From shows in legendary ballparks such as Wrigley Field and Fenway Park, to their music that's been provided as a soundtrack to the game over the years, there are about a hundred different connections that you can make with the band and the game. On the eve of Opening Day, we'll dig deep into what makes Pearl Jam and baseball the perfect match, from drawing a parallel line to the fandoms and exploring Ed's history as a rockstar ambassador to the game. Listen in as we'll have a great conversation with long time acclaimed baseball writer, Peter Gammons. Peter has been long known for his affinity for both fandoms, and we'll get to talking with him about the Hot Stove Cool Music benefit, playing on stage alongside Bernie Williams and his personal hero Buddy Guy, his relationship with Eddie, some of his favorite Pearl Jam lyrics and how they connect to baseball, Fenway Park as a music venue, and he'll even share some of his bold predictions for the upcoming 2025 season. It's a can't miss interview, make sure you tune in! We'll also talk to a panel of great friends who share passions for both the band and the game, and we'll share a lot of stories about ballpark shows and experiences. We have fan representation for the Mets, Cubs, Phillies, Red Sox, Yankees, Padres and Braves, and somehow we all made it out alive! We also put together our favorite Pearl Jam live moments that incorporate baseball, so you won't want to miss it! Everyone knows that Seattle is Pearl Jam's hometown city, but just like Chicago is a hometown city for Eddie Vedder, so is San Diego. Not just that, but it extends to both Mike McCready and Matt Cameron as well. So any time that the band gets to travel to San Diego, there's no doubt that you're in for a special show. In 2006, that's exactly what happens. The band played with their pants on fire and every song had high octane energy as the hometown crowd was treated to something special. The main story from this show took place at the top of the encore where Ed paid tribute to his former drama teacher, a man named Clayton E. Liggett, who Ed had a theater created in his name. He told the story about finding out the night he passed away during the Mirrorball sessions. After hearing of the news, he went back into the studio and started to strum his guitar with the opening chord of what would become Long Road. We'll talk about how important this moment was when looking back on the history of this band, and we'll also share our own personal stories of how teachers have impacted our lives. There are so many ways we can all connect to Ed, and this story is transcendent due to his vulnerability in sharing that. There are also some big time performances at this show. The first four songs of this show from Oceans to Brain Of J. set the bar incredibly high for the night, and then incredible performances to follow such as Even Flow, You Are, Satan's Bed, Inside Job, Rearviewmirror with a Life Wasted inspired improv, Crown Of Thorns, a big time Alive solo and the debut of Big Wave. We'll spend the episode discussing which 2006 shows best define this era and if this show deserves to be in the conversation. Is this a candidate for the Live On 4 Legs hall of fame? Benny Harrison Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson What fun to sit down and catch up with keyboardist, singer, songwriter, producer, Benny Harrison, who I've known for 5 decades. There was so much I didn't know. Benny gave us the back story––growing up mixed race from hard-working parents who may or may not have been on the wrong side of the law, but who taught him strong work ethics and appreciated immediately and encouraged his musical gifts. When his brother sold his piano, Benny turned lemons into lemonade, practicing at a local school which garnered him his first professional gig with Henry Gross, which led him to sing onstage with Michael McDonald. When I met up with him, he was sitting in with Mason Reese, and then Phoebe Snow sat in with Benny and The Spydrs. A kickass player and entertainer, Benny was in regular rotation at all the clubs I booked back in the day. Benny tells a great story about a night at Spo-Dee-O-Dee's and a couple of huge surprise special guests. Benny has played with Vernon Reid; Corey Glover; Joe Walsh; Elvis Costello; Simon Kirke; and Charlie Drayton, among many others and for four years his Spydrs were the house band at The China Club's famed Monday nights where Bruce Willis, Rick James, Steve Stevens, Linda Perry, Eddie Vedder, Billy Idol, and whoever was in town, would sit in with the band. We talked with mutual zeal of our love for the place, those nights, that time. Benny has been active with Veterans who are either suffering from PTSD, alcohol, drug abuse, or homelessness, in a program called Voices of Valor. It's a 9-week process to write a song with the Vets who have served our country. He produces and creates the musical/harmonic part of the process, and then takes the Vets into a recording studio, where they can experience the process. He shared a most moving sweet story of a silent woman's transformation. Working on an upcoming Documentary, Back Up Front, it tells the story of players including him who started out in front, worked the backline and are once again stepping out front. Benny's upcoming album, Pages, drops April 14th. He had planned to perform a couple of the tunes with his producer, Mike Ciro, but that didn't pan out. He treated us to a few little tastes with an unmiked guitar. A few tech challenges, but as with all things Benny went with it, eventually singing a capella. He's a pro! To get the album, be at The Bitter End for the album release, and for all things Benny go to BennyHarrison.com. I got an advance listen- it's fab! I adore my dear friend. It was such a treat to get lost in time and tales with this talented, resilient, fun, and passionate, pal. Hop into the car with me as I recount a hilarious ride with my daughter and her friend, where our clashing music choices led to unexpected moments of joy.Prepare for a star-studded flashback as we recount the SNL 50 Homecoming Concert, where the unexpected twist of Jimmy Fallon launching the night with a Blues Brothers-style act set the tone for the evening. As the stage lights flickered, Eddie Vedder delivered heartfelt tributes through the tunes of Tom Petty and Pearl Jam, while the B-52s, transported us back to the '80s with "Love Shack." And just when you think the night couldn't get more magical, Devo, David Byrne, Post Nirvana, and Jack White made us all fans again. Our journey wouldn't be complete without delving into tales of classic music that shaped generations. Led Zeppelin's ambitious "Physical Graffiti" offer tales of musical genius and legacy. We reminisce about Tom Petty's chart triumphs, The Smiths', and Tears for Fears 'Songs from the Big Chair' album. In 2005, for the first time in their history, Pearl Jam took the trek across the entire nation of Canada visiting many cities and provinces for the first, and for some the only time. While the band had been no stranger to Montreal, this night in the city of saints was special for reasons beyond the stage. It was the one-year anniversary that a dear friend and founding father of punk rock Johnny Ramone had passed away. The entirety of this set pays tribute to the man who Eddie Vedder considered one of his best friends and heroes. From the start of the show with Release, you are able to tell how difficult it was for Ed to get through it with many emotions bubbling to the surface. There are stretches of songs in this show ranging from songs that Johnny loved such as Corduroy and Last Kiss to songs that dealt with the themes of death and loss such as Light Years, Sad and Man Of The Hour. There are even two Ramones songs played here as we'll get to hear I Believe In Miracles and a tag of I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend that occurred at the end of Better Man. And this may surprise many of you, but there are not one, but two Cat Stevens covers played at this show. Believe it or not, there is a connection there with Johnny Ramone, and we'll share that as we discuss the set. Tagging in here to help out with this episode is one half of the Hallucinogenic Recipe podcast, Patrick Boegel, who was in attendance for this show and will share his memories involving a Fresh Canadian Rastaman. We'll also dig into Eddie's recent performances on the SNL 50 Homecoming special and how Ed, Jack White and others did a great job paying homage to the history of the show. Terry Hobbs and Vicky Edwards - Box Full of NightmaresIn 1993, three eight-year old boys, Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Chris Byers, were murdered; their naked, mutilated bodies found shoved into the mud at the bottom of a ditch. The information developed by investigators pointed to three teenagers as the murderers. The three teens were convicted after two separate trials. One was sentenced to life imprisonment, one was sentenced to life plus forty years, and the third was sentenced to death. The convictions of the three teens became one of the most controversial cases in the State of Arkansas. During the early years of their incarceration, the growth of the Internet connected people all over the world through discussion forums and websites. As a result, the three teens, who became known as the “West Memphis Three,” developed a cult following that included the support of high-profile celebrities, including Johnny Depp, Peter Jackson, and Eddie Vedder and others, who all bought into the myth that the three convicted murderers were innocent.Today, the three convicted murderers are free. They appear to have given up their quest for judicial exoneration. Once they exhausted all other potential “guilty” parties, (some joined their camp and others were obviously not guilty), they focused their attention on Terry Hobbs, step-father of Stevie Branch, in an effort to divert attention from the evidence proving their guilt. Terry Hobbs was never a suspect in the murders and the facts of the case do not support his guilt. Undeterred, the convicted killers and their supporters continue to point fingers at Terry Hobbs.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
Dove Award-winning Christian musician David Crowder buddies up with Jase, who gleefully claims their twin-ship.
